The Effect Of Joint-Product Export Smuggling On Export Tax Policy, Scott Fausti May 1994

The Effect Of Joint-Product Export Smuggling On Export Tax Policy, Scott Fausti

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

This paper analyzes the effect of joint-product export smuggling on the revenue-maximizing export tax rate and tax revenue collection under the small country assumption. The results indicate that the effect of introducing joint product export smuggling is dependent on whether legal and illegal exports are considered a substitutable or complementary activity for the exporting firm. The results of the model are applied to the issue of cigarette smuggling in the United States. The paper concludes that if legal and illegal interstate trade in cigarettes are substitutable activities for firms in the wholesale and retail tobacco industry, then states levying relatively …

Educational Attainment: The Effects Of Socioeconomic Differences, Risa Kumazawa '94 May 1994

Educational Attainment: The Effects Of Socioeconomic Differences, Risa Kumazawa '94

Honors Projects

Educational attainment is a topic that has been discussed in both economics and sociology. Economic research has focused on the importance of socioeconomic factors, mainly race/ ethnic origins and poverty status (Wolfe, 1973; Hoffman, 1987; Krein & Beller, 1988; Kominski, 1990; Courtless, 1991). Research in sociology has also dealt with other important factors such as attitudes and influences of significant others (Sewell, 1971; Featherman, 1972; Hauser, 1973; Featherman, 1980; Velez, 1986). Little has been done to incorporate both types of research. While sociological research took important factors into account such as attitudes, many of the initial models were constructed for studying …

Women In Law--Equal Justice For All?, Barb Kube '94 May 1994

Women In Law--Equal Justice For All?, Barb Kube '94

Honors Projects

This study uses Dr. Barbara Bergmann's Model of Labor Market Overcrowding to test for gender discrimination in the legal profession. Bergmann's model suggests that stereotypes and society's perceptions about what is "normal" divide male and female lawyers into two separate labor markets such that 1) females are paid less than males and 2) male and female lawyers are segregated into different areas of practice--either by area of concentration or position within the firm. Two samples, one composed of 45 young lawyers and the other consisting of 400 lawyers (200 males and 260 females), are used to test these hypotheses. The …

Property Tax Capitalization: Theory And Empirical Evidence, Jay M. Lillywhite May 1994

Property Tax Capitalization: Theory And Empirical Evidence, Jay M. Lillywhite

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In an environment of increasing government expenditures financed largely viii through taxes, including a relatively visible and large residential property tax, the issue of whether property taxes are capitalized into market values is increasingly important. Property tax capitalization is the reflection of property taxes in the value of real property. The capitalization of property tax does not necessarily pose a problem; rather, problems arise when homes identical to each other have different taxes and these differentials are then capitalized into market values. These capitalized tax differentials result in large capital gains and losses to owners of real estate.

Regression analysis was used to determine the significant production and financial factors influencing returns per cow; …

Alternative Exchange Rate Theories (Mundell-Fleming, Monetary, And Equilibrium Approach): An Empirical Investigation, Joon-Ho Lee May 1994

Alternative Exchange Rate Theories (Mundell-Fleming, Monetary, And Equilibrium Approach): An Empirical Investigation, Joon-Ho Lee

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

With the shift to a system of floating exchange rates among major currencies in 1973, there was a shift of emphasis from the external balance to the exchange rate determination. Attempts have been made to explain the behavior of the exchange rate both theoretically and empirically over the last 20 years. Most models could not explain what happened, as in the 1980s, when the exchange rate moved a lot. Alternative models based on different approaches give different explanations and suggest different policies. This study examines the implications of the models to see what light the empirical results shed on the …

Utah Boating And Fishing Survey: Applying Contingent Valuation And Travel Cost Methods To Estimate Recreation Values In Northern Utah For The Bear River Water Development Project, Jeff T. Williams May 1994

Utah Boating And Fishing Survey: Applying Contingent Valuation And Travel Cost Methods To Estimate Recreation Values In Northern Utah For The Bear River Water Development Project, Jeff T. Williams

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The intent of this thesis is to compare contingent valuation methods (CVM) and travel cost methods (TCM) to estimate consumer surplus for boaters and anglers in northern Utah. TCM results are about three times that of CVM. Several limitations are noted, specifically that CVM solicits given willingness to pay (WTP for specific reservoir sites. TCM analyzes aggregated trips to reservoirs with a wide array of site characteristics.

Health Care Reform As Seen By A General Economist, James Tobin May 1994

Health Care Reform As Seen By A General Economist, James Tobin

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Universal coverage, it is argued, implies universally required insurance, to avoid adverse selection into last-resort care implicitly guaranteed. It also entails community rating, such that insurers cannot choose among risks. Individual mandate makes more sense than employer mandate. A system is proposed in which individual can choose among a government Medicare-like plan and private insurance offering equivalent services. Means-tested assistance would help individuals pay premiums.

Investment And Interest Rates In Ecuador During 1970-1990, Max Proano '94 May 1994

Investment And Interest Rates In Ecuador During 1970-1990, Max Proano '94

Honors Projects

Today, several less developed countries are implementing liberal economic policies, such as privatization of state-own services, reduction and elimination of tariffs and trade barriers, creation of well-developed capital markets, and openness of the economy to foreign capital, among others. Their main purpose is to achieve rapid economic development, just as Mexico, Chile, and Argentina successfully have done recently. One of these countries is Ecuador, . where the new conservative government is implementing these policies. This study is motivated by the author's desire to determine how financial and monetary policy in Ecuador influence its economic development. In order to understand the …

Policies To Promote Shipping Registration In Singapore, Sock Yong Phang, Rex S. Toh May 1994

Policies To Promote Shipping Registration In Singapore, Sock Yong Phang, Rex S. Toh

Research Collection School Of Economics

An analysis traces the development of ship registration in Singapore and examines the underlying motivation behind changes in policies over the last 3 decades. For the better part of the 1970s Singapore was classified as a flag of convenience (FOC) country as it pursued an FOC policy that emphasized the quantitative growth of its merchant fleet. Beginning in 1979 Singapore tightened maritime standards as well as ownership disclosure rules, requiring a foreign shipowner to incorporate a company in Singapore. It is regarded today as a quasi-FOC country - a term associated favorably with countries offering tax incentives to shipowners. The …

Inflation In The European Community: A Study Before And After German Unification, Ann C. Chalstrom '94

Honors Projects

During the last half of the twentieth century, the global economy has been undergoing monumental change, as the world is dividing into three regional economic zones: the Pacific rim; North America.; and, the European Community (EC). Though it is important to analyze the relationships between these three economic players, it is also ~ecessary to study the relationships among the member nations of each bloc to determine the effect on the nations participating in the bloc as well as the activities of the single; unit. The tight economic relationship formed when several sovereign nations form a union, like the EC, has …

Economic Development And Trade Liberalization: The Indonesian Experience, Scott Fausti, Rony Bishry Apr 1994

Economic Development And Trade Liberalization: The Indonesian Experience, Scott Fausti, Rony Bishry

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

From 1950 to 1965, Indonesia followed an import substitution industrialization development strategy. From 1966 to the present, Indonesia has moved toward an export oriented development strategy. This paper tests the predictions of the Heckscher-Ohlin- Samuelson (HOS) model of international trade by comparing Indonesia's economic performance under two contrasting development strategies. The paper concludes that Indonesia's economic performance under the opposing development strategies supports the predictions of the HOS model. Furthermore, the Indonesian experience under the two development strategies supports the "trade as an engine of growth" hypothesis.

Production Uncertainty, Enforcement And Smuggling: A Stochastic Model, Scott Fausti Apr 1994

Production Uncertainty, Enforcement And Smuggling: A Stochastic Model, Scott Fausti

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

This paper merges the existing smuggling literature with the literature concerning competitive firm behavior under uncertainty. A stochastic, joint product, model of smuggling is developed. The model introduces production uncertainty, generated by enforcement activity, into a Pitt (1981) type of smuggling production function. This modelling technique allows the trade pattern and welfare results which evolve under smuggling with uncertainty to be compared to smuggling in a world of certainty. It is demonstrated that mere presence of uncertainty increases the real resource cost associated with smuggling, reduces legal and illegal trade, and welfare, when compared to smuggling in a world of …

Ponzi Finance, Government Solvency And The Redundancy Or Usefulness Of Public Debt, Willem H. Buiter, Kenneth M. Kletzer

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We study how the government’s ability to borrow depends on its capacity to tax. Using a two-period OLG growth model, we establish the following. When lump-sum taxes are unrestricted, Ponzi finance is possible, regardless of whether the economy is dynamically inefficient and regardless of the relationship between the interest rate and the growth rate. Ponzi finance, and government debt generally, is unessential or redundant: it does not enlarge the set of allocations that can be supported as competitive equilibria. When lump-sum taxes are restricted, Ponzi finance (public debt) may be essential . Central to the paper is our characterization of …

French Optical Telegraphy, 1793-1855: Hardware, Software, Administration, Alexander J. Field

Economics

The relatively stable contribution of technological change to aggregate growth masks technological trajectories which are, at the sectoral level, often highly discontinuous. For decades, even centuries, the capabilities used to produce a particular good or service may continue essentially unchanged or with relatively minor evolutionary modifications. Sometimes without much warning a breakthrough innovation will create a new technological paradigm, along with an accompanying "gale of creative destruction," which is then followed by a period of consolidation within a maturing framework.
