Immigrant Workers In The Cleaning Industry: The Experience Of Boston's Central Americans, Karen M. Lado Mar 1995

Immigrant Workers In The Cleaning Industry: The Experience Of Boston's Central Americans, Karen M. Lado

New England Journal of Public Policy

This study has two objectives: to describe Central Americans' employment experience in the Boston area by focusing on cleaning workers and to explore the reasons why Central Americans in particular, and immigrants in general, become concentrated in industries like cleaning. The study highlights a number of characteristics of immigrant workers and of cleaning work that contribute to employment in the industry. Recent immigrants need jobs that do not require English skills or formal training, can be accessed informally, and offer schedules that allow them to take on additional work. Cleaning companies, in turn, need a constant source of reliable workers …

Latinos Need Not Apply: The Effects Of Industrial Change And Workplace Discrimination On Latino Employment, Edwin Meléndez, Françoise Carré, Evangelina Holvino Mar 1995

Latinos Need Not Apply: The Effects Of Industrial Change And Workplace Discrimination On Latino Employment, Edwin Meléndez, Françoise Carré, Evangelina Holvino

New England Journal of Public Policy

The objective of the research described here is to assess how recent changes in the organization of industry and discrimination in the workplace affect the employment of Latinos. One of the most important developments in labor markets during the past two decades is the erosion of internal labor markets. Employers are responding to intensified competitive conditions that developed during the 1980s: increased international competition in domestic markets and deregulation in telecommunications, banking, insurance, and other industries. The development of information technologies and the diffusion of secondary and postsecondary education have enabled organizations to cut labor costs. In particular, firms are …

Price Competition Between Two International Firms Facing Tariffs, Eric O'N. Fisher, Charles A. Wilson Mar 1995

Price Competition Between Two International Firms Facing Tariffs, Eric O'N. Fisher, Charles A. Wilson

Economics

This paper examines the effects of tariffs on price setting duopolists selling a homogeneous product. The producers cannot segment geographically distinct markets. It provides a complete characterization of the equilibrium (mixed) strategies and analyzes the pattern of competition for different tariffs. If a country raises its tariff, the profits of both producers increase, although the protected firm typically benefits more than its foreign counterpart. Growth in one market may reduce the profits of the firm located in the other market.

The Conduct Of Monetary And Banking Policies By The Central Bank Of Nigeria, V. A. Odozi Mar 1995

The Conduct Of Monetary And Banking Policies By The Central Bank Of Nigeria, V. A. Odozi

Economic and Financial Review

Monetary and banking policies are usually the responsibilities of the Monetary Authorities which comprise the Central Bank and the Central Government. In Nigeria, while the Central Bank exercises primary responsibilities for initiating, articulating, implementing and appraising such policies, the Bank's proposals are subject to the approval of the Federal Government. To facilitate the understanding of the conduct of monetary and banking policies by the CBN, it is necessary to articulate the theoretical framework of monetary policy, the CBN-monetary management techniques, as well as the policy measures adopted since 1986 to reform and strengthen -the banking system.

Open Market Operations In 1994, P. A. Akatu, S. N. Ibeabuchi Mar 1995

Open Market Operations In 1994, P. A. Akatu, S. N. Ibeabuchi

Economic and Financial Review

In line with the objectives of the monetary policy in 1994, the CBN achieved a substantial reduction of its holding of treasury bills through open market operations that were aimed at slowing down the growth of base money and money supply. While the volume of open market sales suffered apparently from the initial market reactions to the budget for fiscal 1994 and later the political and industrial unrest, such sales reached record levels in the fourth quarter of the year. However, OMO largely responded to the short-term portfolio preferences of banks and did not translate into an overall pressure on …

A Review And Analysis Of Agricultural Prices In Nigeria, 1977 - 1993, O. O. Akanji, E. U. Ukeje Mar 1995

A Review And Analysis Of Agricultural Prices In Nigeria, 1977 - 1993, O. O. Akanji, E. U. Ukeje

Economic and Financial Review

This paper reviews and analyses the various prices that have been in existence in the agricultural sector since the re-organization of the produce marketing system in 1977 to the present free market system. It was observed that a close relationship existed between the market prices and the determined prices. However, some upward revisions in the official prices were found to be neither rational nor based on any concrete study. Moreso, most commodities were implicitly taxed during the period 1977-1985. The increases in the prices recorded between 1986 1993 due to market liberalization had an added problem of marketing. The domestic …

Dumb Bugs And Bright Noncooperative Players: Games, Context And Behavior, Thomas Quint, Martin Shubik, Dickey Yan Feb 1995

Dumb Bugs And Bright Noncooperative Players: Games, Context And Behavior, Thomas Quint, Martin Shubik, Dickey Yan

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Consider a repeated bimatrix game. We define “bugs” as players whose “strategy” is to react myopically to whatever the opponent did on the previous iteration. We believe that in some contexts this is a more realistic model of behavior than the standard “supremely rational” noncooperative game player. We consider possible outcome paths that can occur as the result of bugs playing a game. We also compare how bugs fare over a suitable “universe of games,” as compared with standard “Nash” players and “maximin” players.

Conversation, Information, And Herd Behavior, Robert J. Shiller Feb 1995

Conversation, Information, And Herd Behavior, Robert J. Shiller

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Experimental evidence shows that an important reason why people tend to imitate others, to exhibit “herd behavior” is that they assume that the others have information that justifies their actions. The information cascade models of Banerjee [1992] and Bikhchandani et al . [1992] are significant developments in showing some general equilibrium and welfare effects of such rational imitative behavior. But these models as specified may be of limited applicability since they assert that differences across groups in herd behavior can be attributed to the random decisions of first movers. Differences across groups in herd behavior might be explained more often …
