An Analysis Of Foreign Direct Investment And Portfolio Investment Into Developing Countries, Sunaina Kilachand Patel Jan 1996

An Analysis Of Foreign Direct Investment And Portfolio Investment Into Developing Countries, Sunaina Kilachand Patel

Honors Papers

This paper attempts to understand what motivates and determines private capital inflows in developing counties. I intend to examine whether different types of flows (in this paper I will focus only on FOI and PFI as they dominate private investment flows today) depend on different factors, whether these factors are domestic or international and which of these factors are within the scope and reach of the host developing countries. In my paper, after providing some background information on FOI and PFI, I will then review previous studies and work based on the subject of FOI and PFI flows. I will …

Leaner Environmental Policies For Agriculture, David E. Ervin, Elisabeth A. Graffy Jan 1996

Leaner Environmental Policies For Agriculture, David E. Ervin, Elisabeth A. Graffy

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Farmers and ranchers face a most troubling dilemma. Complex political forces have mapped two quite different paths to environmental management-a rollback of federal regulations or a buildup of traditional subsidies. In the words of a famous modern philosopher, "When you reach a fork in the road, take it!" But either choice poses risk for the industry and will not likely ameliorate nettlesome environmental problems. A third path could help the industry maintain competitiveness and meet environmental challenges. This path uses me latest science to identify agroenvironmental problems and emphasizes economically attractive technology to sustain environmental improvements.

Export Competitiveness Of China And Asean In The Us Market, Thomas J. Voon Jan 1996

Export Competitiveness Of China And Asean In The Us Market, Thomas J. Voon

CAPS Working Paper Series

This paper aims to provide a comparison of the changing pattern of export competitiveness among China and the four ASEAN countries comprising Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand (hereafter ASEAN-4) as exporters of primary commodities, labour-intensive goods as well as technology-intensive manufactures in the US market. Competitiveness is defined as country A’s ability to gain market share on a common export destination (such as the US import market). There are many popssible factors contributing to the changing level of competitiveness of a trading country. In this paper, we confine our analyss to evaluating how important relative changes in real exchange rate, …

Poverty And Inequality: The Political Economy Of Redistribution, Jon Neill Editor Jan 1996

Poverty And Inequality: The Political Economy Of Redistribution, Jon Neill Editor

Upjohn Press

Despite the nation's significant and prolonged economic growth during the 1990s, the portion of aggregate income going to the poorest 20 percent of the population declined, while that of the richest 20 percent grew. The contributors to this volume examine the extent and reasons behind this distribution.

How Retirement Saving Programs Increase Saving, James M. Poterba, Steven F. Venti, David A. Wise Jan 1996

How Retirement Saving Programs Increase Saving, James M. Poterba, Steven F. Venti, David A. Wise

Dartmouth Scholarship

This paper summarizes the authors work on the effect of IRA and 401(k) contributions on net personal saving. They consider many different nonparametric approaches to controlling for heterogeneity in individual saving behavior and conclude that the weight of the available evidence suggests that contributions to both IRAs and 401(k)s largely represent new saving. The authors devote particular attention to reconciling their results with the findings in other studies that reach different conclusions, sometimes using the same databases that the authors analyze. Methodological limitations that undermine the reliability of results in other studies explain many of these disparities.

Foreign Direct Investment In Eastern Europe: Applying Traditional Models Of Fdi To The Transitional Countries Of Eastern Europe, Jonathan Austin Kerr Jan 1996

Foreign Direct Investment In Eastern Europe: Applying Traditional Models Of Fdi To The Transitional Countries Of Eastern Europe, Jonathan Austin Kerr

Honors Papers

An empirical analysis is used to determine whether the factors that normally explain FDI flows to developing countries are also suitable to explain FDI flows to the developing countries of Eastern Europe for the years 1988-1992. It was found that a typical set of explanatory variables which explain FDI flows to non Eastern Europe developing countries very well, is not a useful set of determinants for FDI flows to Eastern Europe. Conclusions are drawn concerning the extent to which these results reflect the current state of political and economic transition taking place in Eastern Europe.

Viability Of Traditional Banking Services: Evidence From The Regional Level U.S. Banking Industry, Sofia Xinchen Lou Jan 1996

Viability Of Traditional Banking Services: Evidence From The Regional Level U.S. Banking Industry, Sofia Xinchen Lou

Honors Papers

My study focuses on testing the conduct of banks in their traditional activities, loans and demand deposits provision. The twenty-one year period runs from 1972 to 1992. A relatively recent econometric model is employed. The model takes a set of two-equation system that contains one demand function and one reduced-form supply equation. A parameter that references the deviation in the conduct of banks from the competitive equilibrium level can be estimated using the model. When the parameter has a value that is not significantly different from 0, banks' conduct is said to be competitive. A positive value indicates market power …

The Stock Market As A Leading Indicator: An Application Of Granger Causality, Brad Comincioli Jan 1996

The Stock Market As A Leading Indicator: An Application Of Granger Causality, Brad Comincioli

University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics

The purpose of this paper, then, is to evaluate stock prices as a leading indicator of economic activity. Time-series analysis and the notion of "Granger causality" are used in this project to estimate relationships between stock prices and the economy, and to see if they are consistent with theory. In this paper, we will explore the following questions. First, does the stock market lead the real economy, in the sense that variation in its past values explains some of the variation in the real economy? Second, does the stock market "Granger-cause" the real economy, in which case past values of …

An Economic Analysis Of The Death Penalty, Martin Kasten Jan 1996

An Economic Analysis Of The Death Penalty, Martin Kasten

University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics

From an economic perspective, society should only use capital punishment if the marginal benefits outweigh the marginal costs. In the course of analyzing the economic efficiency of capital punishment, and before providing any recommendations, both the benefits and costs of the death penalty must be evaluated. Since the death penalty has been implemented for centuries, many people believe its benefits outweigh its costs. The evaluation of benefits in Part II will be compared to the costs assessed in Part III to determine if this long held assertion is correct.

Cultural Wage Differentials Among United States Immigrants, Bill Takahashi Jan 1996

Cultural Wage Differentials Among United States Immigrants, Bill Takahashi

University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics

This project will attempt to take a modern snapshot of the ongoing process of immigration and cultural diversification, examine the problem of immigrant adaptation into the American way of life and explore which groups, if any, have an advantage when it comes to integrating into American society. More specifically this paper will address the question: What is the role of cultural factors in determining the standard of living of immigrants.

Environmental Injustice: Evidence And Economic Implications, Heidi Y. Willers Jan 1996

Environmental Injustice: Evidence And Economic Implications, Heidi Y. Willers

University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics

Some economic analyses find evidence of environmental injustice--minorities and/or low-income persons are exposed to environmental dangers (locally undesirable land uses, or LULUs) more than their non-minority or more affluent counterparts. Such inefficient allocations result from a violation of perfect property rights. This paper does not determine efficient levels of various environmental dangers, but rather examines and compares several studies in an effort to find a consensus among researchers. No consensus emerges, as differences in research techniques prevent consistent results from being found. Future research must have well-defined methodologies before it can be effectively used by policy makers.

Economic Interdependence Along A Colonial Frontier: Capitalism And The New River Valley, 1745-1789, B. Scott Crawford Jan 1996

Economic Interdependence Along A Colonial Frontier: Capitalism And The New River Valley, 1745-1789, B. Scott Crawford

History Theses & Dissertations

Historians have generally placed the beginning of capitalism in the United States in the early- to mid-nineteenth century. This assumes that the industrialization of the New England states fostered in a modern economic environment for the country as a whole. However, evidence of modern economic principles existed on the Virginia frontier as early as the mid-eighteenth century. As frontier settlers aspired to emulate eastern society, they not only sought to recreate a lifestyle similar to the one they left behind, but also set up similar governing practices, which in turn created social stratification similar to that which existed in the …

Structural Adjustment, Stabilization Policies And The Poor In Egypt, Karima Korayem Jan 1996

Structural Adjustment, Stabilization Policies And The Poor In Egypt, Karima Korayem

Faculty Books

Structural adjustment and stabilization agreements between Egypt and the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank were signed in 1991. The two agreements are referred to as the economic reform and structural adjustment program (ERSAP). To examine the impact of ERSAP on Egypt's poor , one has to define, first, who are the poor and what is their relative share in the population. The negative impact of ERSAP on the society as a whole will be less harmful if absolute and relative poverty are small in Egypt. ERSAP affects the poor through three channels: prices, incomes, and the provision of …

Temporary Equililibrium Dynamics With Learning: The Stability Of Random Walk Beliefs, Shurojit Chatterji Jan 1996

Temporary Equililibrium Dynamics With Learning: The Stability Of Random Walk Beliefs, Shurojit Chatterji

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper examines the stability of deterministic steady-states with a one dimensional state-variable and a smooth, recursive updating rule. It is shown that the only possibly stable steady states are those associated with random walk beliefs, provided there is motion on a center manifold, which is the case when a key parameter is non-zero; In the extant literature, there is no motion on the center manifold (the parameter is zero), a consequence of the specific assumption that the expected value of the state variable next period determines its current value. The stability properties are seen to be robust with respect …

Social And Economic Opportunity In Seventeenth-Century Charles County, Maryland, Garett William Hughes Jan 1996

Social And Economic Opportunity In Seventeenth-Century Charles County, Maryland, Garett William Hughes

History Theses & Dissertations

This study explores social and economic opportunity within Charles County in the context of the seventeenth-century and the founding of the Maryland colony. By illustrating the strong cross-Atlantic ties between England and the Chesapeake region, as well as the impact that a high population turnover rate and unsteady tobacco economy had upon the Maryland colony, this study first establishes the environment that those settlers who chose to immigrate to the Chesapeake inhabited. Further, by utilizing community connections, personal relations, and the legal system, the men and women of Charles County developed new methods in which to access opportunity. The source …

Closing The Growth And Equity Policy Divide: Rethinking The Role Of The Federal Government When Promoting Economic Development In Distressed Urban Communities, Edwin Melendez

Gastón Institute Publications

The objectives of this policy briefing memorandum are two-fold: first, to review the historical record concerning economic growth policies, particularly those overseen by the Economic Development Administration (EDA), and the experience with block grants for urban economic development; and, second, to discuss new roles the federal government might play in promoting the convergence of these two broad policy areas.

Corporate Governance And Economic Efficiency: When Do Institutions Matter?, Ronald J. Gilson Jan 1996

Corporate Governance And Economic Efficiency: When Do Institutions Matter?, Ronald J. Gilson

Faculty Scholarship

Until the 1980s, corporate governance was largely the province of lawyers. It was a world of specific rules – more or less precise statutory requirements governing shareholder meetings, the election of directors, notice requirements and the like – that were essentially unrelated to what corporations actually do. From this perspective, the corporation's productive activity was simply a black box onto which standard governance structures were superimposed with little effect on what took place within. Corporate law was "trivial" or, as Bayless Manning so evocatively portrayed it, simply "great empty corporation statutes – towering skyscrapers of rusted girders internally welded together …

Time And Money, Martin Shubik Jan 1996

Time And Money, Martin Shubik

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

General equilibrium is timeless, and without outside money, the price system is homogeneous of order zero. Some finite horizon strategic market game models are considered with an initial issue of flat money held as an asset. For any arbitrary finite horizon, the solution is time-dependent. In the infinite horizon, time disappears with the initial issue of flat money present as circulating capital in the fully stationary state and the price level is determined.
