The Livingston Survey: Still Useful After All These Years, Dean D. Croushore Mar 1997

The Livingston Survey: Still Useful After All These Years, Dean D. Croushore

Economics Faculty Publications

The decisions of households, firms, and government agencies depend on forecasts of the overall economy. Large firms and the federal government often have the resources to hire their own economists to provide forecasts. But households, small firms, and local governments often depend on surveys of forecasters to get their information. In this article, Dean Croushore spotlights the Livingston Survey, which, even after 50 years, still provides useful forecasts of the economy.

Alternative Implementations Of Expanding Algorithm For Multi-Commodity Spatial Price Equilibrium, Yu-Shen Ke Mar 1997

Alternative Implementations Of Expanding Algorithm For Multi-Commodity Spatial Price Equilibrium, Yu-Shen Ke

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents an algorithm based on the expanding algorithm to solve spatial price equilibrium problems for three different models: perfect competition, monopoly, oligopoly. The expanding algorithm is used to solve the linear single commodity spatial price equilibrium problem for perfectly competitive markets. In this thesis, we consider the general multi-commodity spatial price equilibrium problems with all nonlinear functions, and variable shipping cost. We also show that more commodities in total are shipped, and there is more congestion, especially in oligopoly model.

Adam Smith On The Virtues: A Partial Resolution Of The Adam Smith Problem, Spencer J. Pack Mar 1997

Adam Smith On The Virtues: A Partial Resolution Of The Adam Smith Problem, Spencer J. Pack

Economics Faculty Publications

Adam Smith's definition of justice as a moral virtue based on the "passion" of resentment in 'The Theory of Moral Sentiments' (1759), despite seeming contradictions, supports his analysis of an acquisitive, commercial society in 'The Wealth of Nations' (1774) partly by precluding the concept of a just price.

Asset Markets And Investment Decisions, A. De Waegenaere, Heracles M. Polemarchakis, L. Ventura Feb 1997

Asset Markets And Investment Decisions, A. De Waegenaere, Heracles M. Polemarchakis, L. Ventura

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In an incomplete asset market, firms assign values to investment plans by projecting their payoffs on the span of the payoffs of marketed assets; equivalently, firms employ the Capital Asset Pricing Model. This is a criterion that does not require firms to possess information, such as the marginal valuation of revenue across date – events by shareholders, which is not observable; rather, it is based on information revealed by the prices and payoffs of marketed assets. Under standard assumptions, competitive equilibria exist. But, competitive equilibrium allocations need not satisfy a condition of constrained pareto optimality that recognizes the incompleteness of …

Some Higher Order Theory For A Consistent Nonparametric Model Specification Test, Yanqin Fan, Oliver B. Linton Feb 1997

Some Higher Order Theory For A Consistent Nonparametric Model Specification Test, Yanqin Fan, Oliver B. Linton

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We provide second order theory for a smoothing-based model specification test. We derive the asymptotic cumulants and justify an Edgeworth distributional approximation valid to order close to n -1 . This is used to define size-corrected critical values whose null rejection frequency improves on the normal critical values. Our simulations confirm the efficacy of this method in moderate sized samples

Onondaga County's Economic Performance Since 1980 And Prospects For The Next Decade, William Duncombe, Wilson Wong Feb 1997

Onondaga County's Economic Performance Since 1980 And Prospects For The Next Decade, William Duncombe, Wilson Wong

Center for Policy Research

The last three decades have been a time of transition for the economy of Onondaga County. After its poor performance in the 1970s, it rebounded during most of the 1980s. Since then the county economy has stagnated and even declined in key sectors. This report probes behind these aggregate trends to shed light on the nature of the changing county economy. To put these trends in perspective, the county's performance is compared to that of other metropolitan areas and regions in New York State and several fast growing metropolitan areas in the South. Understanding the reasons for Onondaga County's current …

Science--The Endless Frontier: A Half Century Later, Murray L. Weidenbaum Feb 1997

Science--The Endless Frontier: A Half Century Later, Murray L. Weidenbaum

Murray Weidenbaum Publications

In July 1945, Vannevar Bush wrote the treatise that outlined federal science policy for the next 50 years: Science - The Endless Frontier. Given that the government had not financed in any significant way any non-agricultural research prior to WWII, Bush's report fundamentally altered the federal government's approach to scientific research. The report also strongly influenced the congressional decision to establish the National Science Foundation. Nevertheless, federal government did not implement Bush's policy recommendations, and today there is a shortness of vision to science policy planners. Just as private industry faces an enlarged need for the fruits of R&D, the …

Taxation And Economic Development: The State Of The Economic Literature, Michael J. Wasylenko

Economics - All Scholarship

What conclusions, if any, can be drawn about the impact of state and local tax policy on economic development relative to other factors? What tax characteristics appear to be the most significant determinants? Are certain industries more sensitive to tax policy than others? Are business taxes more important than personal taxes?

Medicaid Forecasting Practices, Dan Williams Jan 1997

Medicaid Forecasting Practices, Dan Williams

Publications and Research

This paper examines forecasting activities among Medicaid agencies in the fifty United States, Washington, D.C., and five U.S. territories (American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, Northern Mariana Islands, and Virgin Islands). Most frequently, studies of state or local forecasting practice focus on revenue forecasting. There are several reasons why comparison of state Medicaid forecast practice may be better than comparison of state revenue forecasting practices. First, there is no consistent reporting of state revenue estimates. States make forecasts when it suits them and report them in a manner that is satisfactory to their governors or legislatures. Collection of data through national …

Exchange Rate Regimes And International Trade, Reuven Glick, Clas Wihlborg Jan 1997

Exchange Rate Regimes And International Trade, Reuven Glick, Clas Wihlborg

Business Faculty Books and Book Chapters

The existing evidence on the volume effects of exchange rate risk and exchange rate regime choice is examined. The analysis involves estimating the effects of cross-country differences in exchange rate regime on export and import elasticities using a continuous measure of the degree of exchange rate flexibility. It is argued that risk for firms involved in international trade tends to decrease with greater exchange rate flexibility. In formulating our hypotheses we argued that the cross-country variation in U.S. export elasticities with respect to the real exchange rate and foreign GDPs is primarily attributable to the cross- country variation in bilateral …

Regional Variations In Antebellum Southern Agriculture, Joseph Liss Jan 1997

Regional Variations In Antebellum Southern Agriculture, Joseph Liss

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

The economy of the nation (and of the South) in pre-Civil War times has attracted much attention. This project furthers work already completed by many professional historic economists by forming smaller regions within the South and analyzing these sub-economies. County-level 1860 Census data (agricultural data) was used to group counties into six major crop regions. The agricultural output for these regions was calculated in terms of gross farm product, transformed by a method previously employed by several economic historians. Some initial analysis was then conducted with the transformed data by examining shares of total output and average county production shares/standard …
