Pensions And Productivity, Stuart Dorsey, Christopher Mark Cornwell, David A. Macpherson Jan 1998

Pensions And Productivity, Stuart Dorsey, Christopher Mark Cornwell, David A. Macpherson

Upjohn Press

Employers typically view their investment in pension plans as a means of providing retirement income for their workers. Economists, on the other hand, view pension programs as a way to increase workplace productivity. Dorsey, Cornwell and Macpherson explore the theoretical and empirical basis for this perspective and, in the process, offer a complete and up-to-date discussion on the productivity theory of pensions.

The Effect Of Increases In Labor Supply On Real Wages, Christopher M. Jahnke Jan 1998

The Effect Of Increases In Labor Supply On Real Wages, Christopher M. Jahnke

Masters Theses

The working class citizen is an important part of the United States. However, the manufacturing worker is getting paid less in real terms now, than in 1975. Because of this, working harder for less has become the battle cry of the blue collar worker. This study is focused on examining the decline in average real hourly wage in manufacturing.

The hypothesis of this paper is that large increases in female labor force participation rates have caused average real wages to fall since 1966. This hypothesis is examined through multiple regression analysis based on a model with three independent variables. The …

Economic Navigation In A Period Of Great Uncertainty, Murray L. Weidenbaum Jan 1998

Economic Navigation In A Period Of Great Uncertainty, Murray L. Weidenbaum

Murray Weidenbaum Publications

1997 was a very good year economically, but 1998 is expected to bring a lower growth rate and a slowdown across a number of industries. But rather than a period of doom-and-gloom, 1998 will in fact be best defined as a time of economic uncertainty. In light of this, this paper attempts to provide an economic outlook for the year ahead by answering three key questions: first, how will the East Asian financial deterioration affect us? Second, will politicians try to spend the projected federal surplus before it materializes? Lastly, will the Federal Reserve continue to stay on the policy …

Crowding Out And Government Spending, Marie Carrasco Jan 1998

Crowding Out And Government Spending, Marie Carrasco

University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics

The purpose of this paper is to provide a better understanding of the relationship between budget deficits and private investment and to contribute to the discussion of whether or not such a relationship exists. We test the robustness of Cebula's (1985) model by extending the time period, by testing the model using a proxy for one of the variables, and by de-trending the variables.

A Test Of Additional Effort Expenditure In The "Walk Year" For Major League Baseball Players, Benjamin D. Grad Jan 1998

A Test Of Additional Effort Expenditure In The "Walk Year" For Major League Baseball Players, Benjamin D. Grad

University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics

Whether they "overperform" or underperform, it is clear that there is incentive for players to do well in their walk year. This same incentive is not present for players either already tied up in long-term contracts or those without enough major league service time to qualify for free-agent status. This paper seeks to test whether the assertion that players perform better and expend more effort in their "walk year" is empirically observable.

The Minimum Wage In America Will Current Legislation Really Help The Working Poor?, Douglas A. Noe Jan 1998

The Minimum Wage In America Will Current Legislation Really Help The Working Poor?, Douglas A. Noe

University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics

This same incentive is not present for players either already tied up in long-term contracts or those without enough major league service time to qualify for free-agent status. Were Finley's plan adopted, this incentive would be present for all players in all seasons, instead of just the few hoping for lucrative contracts at the end of the year. While the competitive balance (and aggregate statistics) may not be effected, if work effort is indeed endogenous, overall effort (and "hustle") would likely be increased, and a finer product would be put on the field, potentially increasing attendance and thus revenues. Thus, …

Winning The Marathon: A Reconsideration Of The Development Effects Of Neo-Classical Trade Practices, Peter Weylie, Jean-Pierre Guevremont Jan 1998

Winning The Marathon: A Reconsideration Of The Development Effects Of Neo-Classical Trade Practices, Peter Weylie, Jean-Pierre Guevremont

University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics

This paper focuses on the trading policies of developed nations, specifically import quotas, and their positive and negative effects on developing countries. We hope to show that the case is not as polar as was once believed and instead focus on how the current literature suggests that the real effects of free-trade are shrouded in nuance and circumstance. Our starting point will be an analysis of the fashionable neo-liberal trade theory and its impact on development, making special reference to the Multi-Fibre Agreement (MFA). We will then turn our attention to the shortcomings of the neo-liberal approach, and provide a …

The Impact Of Youth Characteristics And Experiences On Transitions Out Of Poverty, Michael Seeborg, Mark Israel Jan 1998

The Impact Of Youth Characteristics And Experiences On Transitions Out Of Poverty, Michael Seeborg, Mark Israel

Scholarly Publications

Although the causes of intergenerational transitions from poverty have attracted the attention of economists and sociologists in recent years, there have been few attempts to integrate ideas from both disciplines. Using a sample of young adults who were impoverished as youth, this study explores the effects of a number of background characteristics such as early welfare dependency, substance abuse, teen parenthood and parent's educational attainment on the family income levels of young adults. It finds that many of these background variables have significant indirect influences on family income through intervening variables, especially the respondent's own educational attainment, welfare dependency, and …

The Conditional Heteroscedasticity Of The Yen-Dollar Exchange Rates, Yiu Kuen Tse Jan 1998

The Conditional Heteroscedasticity Of The Yen-Dollar Exchange Rates, Yiu Kuen Tse

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper examines the conditional heteroscedasticity of the yen-dollar exchange rate. A model is constructed by extending the asymmetric power autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity model to a process that is fractionally integrated. It is found that, unlike the equity markets, the appreciation and depreciation shocks of the yen against the dollar have similar effects on future volatilities. Although the results reject both the stable and the integrated models, our analysis of the response coefficients of the past shocks and the application of the models to the estimation of the capital requirements for trading the currencies show that there are no substantial …

What Makes An Entrepreneur?, David G. Blanchflower, Andrew J. Oswald Jan 1998

What Makes An Entrepreneur?, David G. Blanchflower, Andrew J. Oswald

Dartmouth Scholarship

This article uses various micro data sets to study entrepreneurship. Consistent with the existence of capital constraints on potential entrepreneurs, the estimates imply that the probability of self‐employment depends positively upon whether the individual ever received an inheritance or gift. When directly questioned in interview surveys, potential entrepreneurs say that raising capital is their principal problem. Consistent with our theoretical model's predictions, the self‐employed report higher levels of job and life satisfaction than employees. Childhood psychological test scores, however, are not strongly correlated with later self‐employment.

Infrastructure Capital And Private Sector Productivity: A Dynamic Analysis, Farrokh Nourzad Jan 1998

Infrastructure Capital And Private Sector Productivity: A Dynamic Analysis, Farrokh Nourzad

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

This paper examines the relationship between public capital and private sector productivity in the context of a dynamic framework that distinguishes long-run equilibrium relations from short-run disequilibrium values. Using annual data covering the 1948-1987 period we find that there is a stable long-run relationship among private sector productivity, private inputs of capital and labor, and core infrastructure capital. Public capital exerts a positive influence on private sector productivity along this path, although the effect is statistically significant only at low levels of confidence. On the other hand, there appears to be no discernible effect on productivity by core infrastructure capital …

Sraffa's Early Philosophical Thinking, John B. Davis Jan 1998

Sraffa's Early Philosophical Thinking, John B. Davis

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

This paper investigates a number of aspects of Piero Sraffa's early philosophical thinking by placing him within the historical materialist tradition of reasoning about the relation of ideas to the historical process. It first distinguishes Alfred Marshall's views about the historical development of ideas by addressing Marshall's responses to the criticisms of William Cunningham of the English Historical School. Marshall's concept of economics as a universal engine of discovery was rejected by Sraffa in his early writings. Sraffa's critique of Marshall is then argued to lead to two early philosophical commitments on Sraffa's part: that deductivist modes of explanation are …

Sraffa And Keynes: Differences And Shared Preconceptions, John B. Davis Jan 1998

Sraffa And Keynes: Differences And Shared Preconceptions, John B. Davis

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

The relationship between the thinking and work of Sraffa and Keynes is complex and controversial. This paper approaches it initially through an investigation of their respective interpretations of their predecessors, the classical economics and Marshall. Keynes is argued to have misinterpreted the classicals on Say's Law largely on account of his having accepting Marshall's continuity conception of the relation of classical to neoclassical economics. Sraffa's understanding of classical economics as being rooted in a different conception of value and distribution is opposed to Keynes's view. Yet though the two differed at this fundamental level, an argument can be made for …
