We explore the challenges facing the current academic training of economists in small European countries such as Sweden. The monolithic focus on publishing in the top-five journals, which prioritizes methodological rigor over problem-driven research, is often a threat to social relevance and policy applicability. This limits pluralism, excludes many talented economists, and fails to prepare graduates for nonacademic positions. We propose a two-track model for PhD training and academic evaluation, emphasizing both traditional research and applied economic policy, tailored to the diverse needs of academia, public administration, and business. This study examines the role of services trade and foreign direct investment (FDI) in shaping export performance among manufacturing firms participating in global value chains. Using firm-product-destination level panel data for Slovenia (2008-2020), the analysis investigates whether servicification-the growing integration of services into manufacturing-enhances firms' export quality and export volume. The findings reveal that services imports at the destination level significantly enhance export quality, particularly for consumer and intermediate goods, while services exports positively influence export volumes, suggesting strong complementarities between goods and services trade. This study examines the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosure and firm performance, with particular attention to CSR's role as a mitigating mechanism during periods of economic crisis, notably the COVID-19 pandemic. Utilizing a unique hand-collected dataset comprising CSR disclosures from Vietnamese publicly listed firms in the VNR500 index between 2014 and 2021, the analysis employs both accounting-based (return on equity) and market-based (Tobin's Q) performance indicators. The empirical findings indicate a positive association between CSR disclosure and firm performance across both measures. This study explores the relationship between disaggregated country risk and foreign portfolio investment (FPI) flows in South Africa, focusing on both the long-run and short-run effects of economic, financial, and political country risk measures on net foreign purchases of shares (NFPS) and net foreign purchases of bonds (NFPB) during the period from 1995 to 2019. We employed autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) and nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) models to assess the relationships between the variables. This study discusses the effects of assistance program with business digitalization features, on the income resilience and labor absorption of the assisted MSMEs, case study of DKI Jakarta’s JakPreneur Program. Observation data from 2017-2021 tested business resilience under time and economic crisis challenge, cause of pandemic. Treatment group is 31 respondents of JakPreneur members who had participated since 2017 or 2018. Control group is SAKERNAS data from 2017-2021. The result shows that treatment groups had lower incomes but were able to retain workers compared to control groups. Their low income is due to limitations in implementing business digitalization and accounting.

Despite widespread concern about teacher shortages, there is little evidence on when teaching positions are posted and how many people apply for them. Using detailed job-posting and application data on nearly 57,000 applicants from 19 traditional school districts and 24 charter organizations, we provide descriptive evidence on the timing of job postings, the supply of applicants, and the characteristics of applicants, emphasizing how each varies across organizations and between the district and charter sectors. We find that late hiring is less prevalent than prior single-district studies suggest—about 11% of openings are posted late—but varies widely across organizations. Applicant supply differs …

Abstract

The development of a region is frequently followed by the emergence of slum settlements which further obstruct the growth of productive activities. This study evaluates the effects of Slum Upgrading Program in Indonesia to the growth of small-micro industries, cooperatives, and hotels in slum area. By using difference in difference (DID) method, this study analysed 3427 villages in 33 provinces during 2016-2018. It was found that program increased the number of micro and small industries and hotels, and reduced the number of cooperatives. Over the last decade, the manufacturing sector's contribution to Indonesia's economy has declined. In 2010, it was 29.10% of GDP, but by 2022, it had dropped to 19.14%. Employment in the sector also fell, from 14.91% of the workforce in 2010 to 13.80% in 2022. To reverse this trend, the government introduced a policy to boost the Domestic Component Level (DCL) in manufacturing. By offering fiscal incentives to industries meeting certain DCL targets, the government aims to drive economic growth and job creation. A study using BPS data from 2008-2019 shows that this policy raised DCL by 23.5%.

This study investigates how the enduring popularity and policy achievements of Jokowi shaped voter preferences in favor of Prabowo, effectively positioning the election as a referendum on political continuity. One of the best-known results in panel data econometrics, due to Mundlak (1978), is the equality of the random-effects and fixed-effects estimators when the individual effects are correlated with the means over time of the regressors. Chamberlain (1980) showed that the same result holds when the individual effects are correlated with the regressors for all moments in time separately. This paper develops a spatial autoregressive stochastic frontier model that allows the spatial weighting matrix to be stochastic. This approach captures spatial heterogeneity in the interactions among production units and quantifies random spatial dependencies arising from this variability. The model parameters are estimated using a simulated maximum likelihood approach. We propose a method to simulate spillover-corrected direct, indirect, and total efficiency estimates. Additionally, we conduct Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate the finite-sample performance of the proposed model. Finally, an empirical application to the efficiency of Spanish dairy farms is presented to demonstrate the practical implementation of our methodology.

This study examines the impact of intensity of household debt on domestic violence (DV) towards children in Indonesia. There is a positive relationship between the amount of household debt and the likelihood of domestic violence towards children based on literature review. This research uses a quantitative method with multinomial logistic regression analysis. The results of this study indicate that households with more than one household debt are correlated with an increased likelihood of both psychological and physical domestic violence towards children compared to the likelihood of no domestic violence, both before and after controlling variables added.
