The Informal Sector And Employment Generation In Nigeria, A. S. Atoloye Jun 2007

The Informal Sector And Employment Generation In Nigeria, A. S. Atoloye

Economic and Financial Review

What this paper attempts to do is to bring the issues of employment generation in the NEEDS programme and the informal sector into sharper focus. The objective of the paper, therefore, is to assess how far the NEEDS programme has positioned the informal sector of the Nigerian economy, which constitutes the larger segment of the economy in playing the catalytic role of poverty eradication in Nigeria, and to explore the possibility of repositioning the sector to benefit more from the target employment under the programme.

Issues In Nigeria's Transport Data For Planning And International Comparison, G.T. Arosanyin Jun 2007

Issues In Nigeria's Transport Data For Planning And International Comparison, G.T. Arosanyin

Economic and Financial Review

This paper examines the types, sources and shortcomings of transport data required for planning and international comparison in Nigeria. The paper found that transport data as published in Nigeria are deficient in terms of transport development indicators, projections, comprehensiveness, consistency, adequacy and classification accuracy, among others. For Nigeria's transport data to be very useful for planning and international comparison there is the need for the government to adequately fund transport surveys regularly; harmonize the functions of the various agencies responsible for transport data collection and publication and; computerize the data storage and retrieval system.

Tariff And Factor Allocation In A Small Open Economy: Nigeria, T. B. Dipo, Elias A. Udeaja Jun 2007

Tariff And Factor Allocation In A Small Open Economy: Nigeria, T. B. Dipo, Elias A. Udeaja

Economic and Financial Review

This paper examines the likely impact of import tax reduction and its subsequent elimination on factor re-allocation under alternative exchange rate regimes in Nigeria. The study observed that the patterns of reallocation are quite qualitatively similar under alternative exchange rate regimes. Particular findings suggest that, under both exchange rate regimes, as import tariff is reduced progressively, the services industry loses labour employment to the manufacturing and agricultural sectors while the agricultural sector loses capital to both the manufacturing and service sectors. Under the different exchange rate regimes, the manufacturing sector is a net employer of labour and capital. The study …

The Industry Effects Of Monetary Policy In The Euro Area By Gert Peersman And Frank Smets: A Review, Ade O. Adenuga

It analyzed which industries are relatively more affected in downturns. The estimation was done by examining eleven manufacturing industries in seven countries of the euro area. The article is related to the works of Garcia and Schaller,1995; Kakes, 1998; Dolado and Maria-Dolores, 1999; and Peersman and Smets, 2001.

The Challenge Of Community Work In A Global Economy, Howard Karger, Christian Iyiani, Pat Shannon Jun 2007

The Challenge Of Community Work In A Global Economy, Howard Karger, Christian Iyiani, Pat Shannon

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article examines how and why five major stakeholders-international financial organizations; NGOs; governmental entities; multinational corporations; and community development projects- have failed to significantly and uniformly reduce aggregate global poverty. The article uses the results of a case study of HIV/ AIDS prevention in a low-income Nigerian city to argue that effective action must involve local and global stakeholders in collaborative partnerships. It concludes by discussing the critical role of facilitators in such partnerships.

Globalization, Immigration And The Welfare State: A Cross-National Comparison, Qingwen Xu Jun 2007

Globalization, Immigration And The Welfare State: A Cross-National Comparison, Qingwen Xu

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Over the past decades, the forces of globalization have helped created a huge wave of immigration. The relationship between globalization and immigration has been intensely examined in the last decade with a focus not only on whether and how much globalization has caused international immigration but also how to promote and sustain a just global system for the growing number of immigrants. This study selects three developed countries with different welfare state philosophies and traditions-Australia, Sweden and the United States-and compares how they cope with the growing number of immigrants and their various needs. This paper reflects thinking about states' …

An Economic Critique Of Birch And Cobb’S The Liberation Of Life, Wei-Erh Chen Apr 2007

An Economic Critique Of Birch And Cobb’S The Liberation Of Life, Wei-Erh Chen

Major Themes in Economics

The discussion concerning humans and the environment has intensified in recent years. Now, more than ever, we must ask how we as economists can engage in a conversation regarding environmentalism when the participants come from a myriad of disciplines. I posit that it is only through an understanding of the other disciplines’ ethics and values that the economist can meaningfully engage in the conversation. This paper is an exercise in this interdisciplinary understanding. First, Charles Birch and John B. Cobb Jr.’s ecological viewpoint is presented. This is followed by the economic prescriptions arising from the ecological viewpoint. A subsequent critique …

Should The United States Increase The Federal Gasoline Tax?, Jake Ferguson Apr 2007

Should The United States Increase The Federal Gasoline Tax?, Jake Ferguson

Major Themes in Economics

Increasing the federal gasoline tax in the United States is highly debated. A higher tax would reduce the nation’s dependence on foreign oil and have environmental benefits. Downfalls of a higher tax are the regressive nature of the tax and the unfair burden placed on drivers in rural areas. An increased gasoline tax is not popular with the public, so most politicians do not support a higher tax. An increased federal gasoline tax is a good idea if the increase is large and the additional revenue is used to reduce income taxes in a progressive manner.

Empowering The Next Billion, John E. Davies Apr 2007

Empowering The Next Billion, John E. Davies

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

When i travel to India, China, and other growing nations, I am visibly struck by the living conditions I hear about, statistically, there is an estimated 4 billion people who live in poverty around the world. It's visible. It's tangible. But I am also hit, with equal impact, by the relentless and imaginative entrepreneurship I witness in these very same places by people who, from my frame of reference, have scarce resources.

E-business is the use of information technology and electronic communication networks to exchange business information and conduct transactions in electronic, paperless form. From online retail operations to Web-enabled self-service technical support, organizations around the world are transforming in significant and far-reaching ways.
