Economic Integration And Economic Development In Central America, Angel David Sandoval May 1961

Economic Integration And Economic Development In Central America, Angel David Sandoval

Economics ETDs

The thesis of this paper is that economic integration can lead Central America to much higher levels of living for her people, but this will be accomplished only if the economic structure of the region is greatly modified. Correcting the structural faults of the Central American economics will also require economic integration. Such structural weaknesses as inadequate medical personal care, limited provision for education of the masses, out-moded fiscal systems, insufficient and inefficient transportation systems, lethargic public administration, the great gap between the incomes of upper classes and the masses of the people, and the concentration of land ownership in …

Sales And Investment: Behavior Of Manufacturers 1949-1957, James G. Scoville Jan 1961

Sales And Investment: Behavior Of Manufacturers 1949-1957, James G. Scoville

Honors Papers

Since the appearance of Keynes' General Theory the major point of macro-economic emphasis has been upon the conditions and inducements necessary for capital investment. The general view on the dynamic processes of the economy has been largely altered in this past quarter century. No longer do we believe that what is saved automatically finds its way into investment, with total demand---and, hence, income---remaining constant. The Great Depression the development of fairly decent time series, and the often biting words of Keynes have given business cycle theory a new outlook and a new direction. I do not propose to discuss all …

A Survey Of The Attention Given To Population Problems By Physical And Social Science Societies, Morton K. Ohlson

Economics ETDs

It is the purpose of this thesis to examine the publications of leading physical and social science societies 1946 through 1956 with a view to finding out the degree of importance that they attach to the world's present rate of population growth. As a result of this examination of scientific literature it is the thesis of this paper that the overwhelming majority of social and physical scientists believe that the present rate of growth of the world's population is one of the most contemporary problems. The attention given has been uneven among the scientific societies. Some have devoted an adequate …

Section XXI: Meaning in the Social Sciences

Vastly increased research and a sounder technique in history in the nineteenth century had two influences on the social sciences. When an enthusiasm for the records of history was combined with the evolutionary perspective, it often resulted in the search for and the imposition of patterns of development on history in general or on the history of particular subject matters such as economics, politics, morals, or religion. Social scientists looked to history for explanations, in the hope of finding inevitable laws, stages of development, or the forces that moved human society. As historians worked out a critical method for their …

Section XXI: Meaning in the Social Sciences

The study of the way in which man makes a living — a short definition of economics — or of how he makes use of limited resources to satisfy unlimited wants -- another definition — has been traced in this work from Aristotle through the Middle Ages and mercantilism to the nineteenth century, when the classicists and their numerous critics, under the influence of industrialization and the intellectual trends of the day, created a large body of economic thought. In Chapter XIV we saw how, at the end of the century, Alfred Marshall (1842-1924) attempted to reformulate classical theory to …

Section X: The Eighteenth Century Enlightenment

Perhaps the chief achievement of the Enlightenment was the creation of the social sciences and the application of these sciences to the problems of human existence. The selections which follow offer a first-hand glimpse of the type of work that Enlightenment thinkers accomplished in the fields of psychology, economics, political science, and ethics. The selections are but fragments of thorough, systematic analyses of the foregoing subjects. However, our primary interest here is to understand some of the important assumptions and conclusions rather than to acquire a detailed knowledge of each of the sciences. The ideas presented may seem oversimplified and …

An Economic Analysis Of Contributions Under The Income Tax Laws, Floyd E. Gillis, Vernon L. Smith Jan 1958

An Economic Analysis Of Contributions Under The Income Tax Laws, Floyd E. Gillis, Vernon L. Smith

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

In this note classical tools are used to examine the treatment of "gifts in kind" under the federal income-tax laws as they were but a few years ago, as they are today, and as they should be, given the objective that the law appears to be trying to achieve. It will be demonstrated that, under certain conditions, firms today can maximize profit after taxes by producing some output to be given to acceptable charities.

Probably no economic institution of our modern world is affected with a greater public interest than money.
