The Rise Of The Classical Gold Standard: The Role Of Focal Points And Synergistic Effects In Spontaneous Order, Giulio M. Gallarotti
The Rise Of The Classical Gold Standard: The Role Of Focal Points And Synergistic Effects In Spontaneous Order, Giulio M. Gallarotti
Giulio M Gallarotti
This paper presents a theory of the invisible hand in homogeneous spontaneous orders. It does so by answering three fundamental questions: How do spontaneous orders arise? How are they consolidated? Why do they last? Spontaneous order is conceptualized as a solution to problems of cooperation (i.e., state-of-nature and coordination problems) within variable-sum games in decentralized environments. The processes which solve such cooperation problems must be effective in overcoming various obstacles deriving from limited information, uncertainty, and transaction costs. In the emergence or origin of spontaneous order, certain rules will be selected over others because of social-psychological dispositions (i.e., focal points) …

Hamiltonian Approach To Multi-Dimensional Screening, Suren Basov
Hamiltonian Approach To Multi-Dimensional Screening, Suren Basov
Suren Basov
In this paper, I consider a problem of multi-dimensional screening in the case when the number of consumer’s characteristics, m, differs from n, the number of goods produced by a monopolist. I show that, in the case whenn > m, the qualitative features of solution are similar to those obtained by Rochet and Chone (1998) for the case n = m. When the monopolist has too few instruments (n < m), new qualitative features arise. In particular, there are distortions in the outward direction at the top, discontinuity in the bundle of goods consumed on the lower boundary of participation region, and …
A Framework To Compare Environmental Policies, Don Fullerton
A Framework To Compare Environmental Policies, Don Fullerton
Don Fullerton
This paper analyzes and compares eight types of policies. Clearly no single policy instrument will work best in all cases. Under some circumstances, command and control (CAC) instruments might be necessary, in either of two forms: (a) emission restrictions, sometimes called "performance standards," or (b) technology restrictions that might be called "design standards." In other cases that are important to identify, these command and control instruments can be replaced by "incentive" instruments such as taxes, subsidies, or permits. As suggested by Arthur Pigou (1932), the pollution problem could be addressed by (a) taxes on the pollution, or (b) subsidies to …
Modeling The Effects Of Area Closure And Tax Policies: A Spatial-Temporal Model Of The Hawaii Longline Fishery, Ujjayant N. Chakravorty, Keiichi Nemoto
Modeling The Effects Of Area Closure And Tax Policies: A Spatial-Temporal Model Of The Hawaii Longline Fishery, Ujjayant N. Chakravorty, Keiichi Nemoto
Ujjayant Chakravorty
We develop an economic model for a multi-species fishery that incorporates the spatial and temporal distribution of effort and fish stocks. Catchability coefficients and initial stocks are estimated from catch and effort data for each specific location. Vessels are allocated over space and time to locations of maximum profit, which decline with harvest because of stock externalities. A supply function for labor allocation in the fishery is estimated. The simulated model is applied to the Hawaii longline fishery. The economic impacts of regulatory policies, such as reduction of inshore gear conflict and conservation of offshore turtle populations, are examined.
Management Of Fisheries In Eu: A Principal-Agent Analysis, Frank Jensen, Niels Vestergaard
Management Of Fisheries In Eu: A Principal-Agent Analysis, Frank Jensen, Niels Vestergaard
Niels Vestergaard
In this paper, an EU tax on fishing effort is studied as an alternative to the system of Total Allowable Catches (TACs). The analysis is conducted under imperfect information, and the hypothesis adopted is that the EU lacks information about the costs of individual fishermen. In light of this imperfection, there are at least two reasons for considering an EU tax. First, it can be used to correct part of the market failure associated with fisheries. Second, it can be used to secure correct revelation of fishermen types in light of asymmetric information.
Innovation, Demand And Employment, Mario Pianta
Innovation, Demand And Employment, Mario Pianta
Mario Pianta
The paper examines the link between technological change and demand and their impact on employment in manufacturing industry. The specific nature of innovation, mainly oriented towards product or process innovations, is considered, in the light of the competitive strategies of firms and industries. An interpretative model is proposed and an empirical analysis is carried out, using the data of the European Innovation Surveys for five countries. The results of cross-industry regressions show that demand, structural change and orientation toward product innovations have a positive impact on employment change in the 1990s, while the intensity of innovative expenditure (including R&D, design, …
