Spanish Validation Of The Piccolo (Parenting Interactions With Children: Checklist Of Observations Linked To Outcomes), Rosa Vilaseca, Magda Rivero, Rosa M. Bersabé, Esperanza Navarro-Pardo, Maria Jose Cantero, Fina Ferrer, Clara Valls Vidal, Mark S. Innocenti, Lori A. Roggman

Background/Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Parenting Interactions with Children: Checklist of Observations Linked to Outcomes (PICCOLO; Roggman et al., 2013a). This observational measure is composed of 29 items that assess the quality of four domains of parenting interactions that promote child development: affection, responsiveness, encouragement, and teaching.

Methods: The sample included 203 mother-child dyads who had been video-recorded playing together. Fifty-six percent of the children were male, and 44% were female, aged from 10 to 47 months. Video-recorded observations were rated using PICCOLO items.

The Intersection Of Speech-Language Pathologists’ Beliefs, Perceptions, And Practices And The Language Acquisition And Development Of Emerging Aided Communicators, Margaret Vento-Wilson

This dissertation discusses the convergence of aided augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems, the language acquisition and development of young children who are minimally verbal or nonverbal who acquire their native language while simultaneously learning to use an aided AAC system, and explicit and implicit elements that influence language outcomes. Factors investigated include those related to language acquisition universals, the AAC system, the young aided AAC user, and practices, philosophies, and beliefs of speech-language pathologists (SLPs). Assessing Speech & Swallowing Therapy Needs Of Childhood Cancer Survivors, Kierstin Dewey

Research on Capitol Hill

Approximately 420,000 childhood cancer survivors are currently living in the United States. The rise in survival rates makes the need for professionals to help improve quality of life for pediatric cancer survivors a high priority.

Speech and swallowing can be largely impacted In children receiving radiation therapy for cancers of the head, neck, or brain (hereafter referred to as HNBC). Cancer tumors themselves, as well as cancer treatments, cause acute and long-term side effects that cause pain, restricted range of motion, and decrease in overall function of the structures necessary to communicate, eat, and drink.

This explanatory sequential mixed methods study focuses on gaining an overall understanding of the potential variances in self-efficacy in information security and security practice behavior in the deaf population. Very little is understood about the deaf experience when engaging in security practices and their confidence levels in doing so. What Are We Hiding? Preventable Causes Of Death Are Not Accurately Counted For Adults With Intellectual Disability, Scott D. Landes

Population Health Research Brief Series

This research brief reports on findings from a recent research on errors in cause of death reporting on death certificates for individuals with disabilities. Analyzing the death certificates of over 30,000 adults with developmental disabilities who died between 2012 and 2016, Landes and his collaborators found that nearly half of death certificates identify a developmental disability itself as the direct cause of death for individuals with disabilities.
