Developing Interactive Elicitation: Social Desirability Bias And Capturing Play, Matthew Spokes, Jack Denham
Developing Interactive Elicitation: Social Desirability Bias And Capturing Play, Matthew Spokes, Jack Denham
The Qualitative Report
Drawing on research from a mixed-methods project on gaming we argue for a qualitative methodological approach called “interactive elicitation,” a form of data collection that combines elements of photo elicitation, interviewing and vignettes. After situating our broader research project exploring young people’s experiences of violent open-world video games, we outline the process of conducting interactive elicitation, arguing for a mixed-methods approach where participants are observed and interviewed both during and immediately after interacting with particular cultural artefacts, in this case the game GTA V. We reflect on the initial design of the research methodology, the problematic aspects of conducting the …

Media Literacy And American Education: An Exploration With Détournement, Seth D. French, Jacob Campbell
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Many competing voices are speaking about the state of American education and how it should be reformed in the best interest of students. Topics such as teachers unions, charter schools, and standardized tests are at the center of many of these discussions. How do we decipher what to believe amid such conflicting perspectives concerning these topics and others like them? To progress American education in a direction that benefits students and democratic society, today’s educational stakeholders must adopt a critical stance in their evaluation of issues at the center of American education; lessons that encourage the development of critical media …

The Unfree Space Of Play: Emergence And Control In The Videogame And The Platform, Logan Brown
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
This article attempts to understand the economic and informatic ramifications of the convergence between increasingly connective games and massive online platforms by considering recent trends in both that center around designing for emergence. Scholarship on emergence as a property of games overwhelmingly treats emergent design as a liberating force that privileges player agency in a virtual space. Yet, as games fuse with surrounding platform ecosystems like Steam, Facebook, and Google, those emergent behaviors are subject to vast systems of inscription that analyze user behavior in order to reshape the free space of emergence and extract greater social and financial capital. …

Childhood And A Culture Of Fear In Lemony Snicket’S A Series Of Unfortunate Events, Nur Aini Annapurna, Dhita Hapsarani
International Review of Humanities Studies
This article is an excerpt from an undergraduate thesis of the same title which focuses on A Series of Unfortunate Events, a children‟s book series by Lemony Snicket. This thesis explores how a culture of fear shapes childhood, which is represented in the series. By using qualitative textual analysis the research discusses how the series represent the way childhood is shaped by a culture of fear through the depiction of various characters and social institutions in the novels. This research also explores the author‟s attempts in challenging the notion that children are vulnerable by analyzing the Baudelaires‟ identity and vulnerability. …
