For The Record: An Oral History Of Rochester, New York Newsworkers, Bonnie Brennen Dec 2000

For The Record: An Oral History Of Rochester, New York Newsworkers, Bonnie Brennen

Bonnie Brennen

For the Record focuses on the experiences of journalists, primarily in their own words, who worked in Rochester, New York, on the Gannett owned Democrat & Chronicle and the Times Union. While there are occasional glimpses back to the beginning of the twentieth century and conversations regarding current newsroom policies by those who are still involved in the business, most of the material in this study centers on Gannett during the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s-a period that may be seen as pivotal to the development of the Gannett Company. Prime-Time Players And Powerful Prose: The Role Of Women In The 1997-1998 Television Season, Martha Lauzen, David Dozier, Manda Hicks

Manda V. Hicks

Within a theoretical framework that integrates the influence of market forces and perceived power of creative individuals, this study considers the empirical relations between women working behind the scenes and on screen in prime time. Using the top 64 prime-time series from the first 12 weeks of the 1997-1998 television season, this study specifically examines the dynamic between the presence of women working behind the scenes and use of powerful language by female characters. Powerful language attributes included the use of directives, interruptions, first words, and last words. The study found that the presence of female executive producers and writers …

En Forma Después De Los 50, Francisco Soto Mas

Francisco Soto Mas

Music, Womankind And Patriarchy: Women Break Music Industry Ideological Myths, Ann Savage Dec 2000

Music, Womankind And Patriarchy: Women Break Music Industry Ideological Myths, Ann Savage

Ann M. Savage

This paper challenges mainstream music industry myths suggesting that women, because of their gender, are not discriminating music listeners. As part of a larger interpretive audience study, fifteen women were interviewed about their relationship with female rock artists who embody a feminist and/or political sensibility. The findings explored in this paper suggest that women are clearly capable of cultivating abilities to appreciate music and cite complex sound, substantive lyrics and professional autonomy as some of their favored distinctions. Moreover, women were quite cognizant of the music industry's monolithic condescending view of not only themselves as fans, but of female musical …
