The Effects Of Threat To One's Belief On Stimulus Of Belief Supporting Arguments, Peter A. Jeye Jan 1982

The Effects Of Threat To One's Belief On Stimulus Of Belief Supporting Arguments, Peter A. Jeye

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The process of persuasion has been written about and studied in abundance since the times of Plato and Aristotle. However, comparatively little research has been done on resistance to persuasion. In fact, to this day, only two series of systematic studies on resistance to persuasion have been reported. The present study will be a logical extension of that research.

Early efforts to study resistance to persuasion focused on the effects of one-sided and two-sided communications. One-sided communications present arguments for a given point of view, without any mention of arguments for the opposing point of view or attempted refutation of …

Crying And Child Abuse: A Survey Of Response To Infant Cry-Signals, Robert E. Wright Oct 1981

Crying And Child Abuse: A Survey Of Response To Infant Cry-Signals, Robert E. Wright

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

We compared the ability of several groups of women to distinguish infant cry-signals. The cry-signals were taped reproductions of the Wasz-Hockert et al., (1964) study. Subjects were mothers and non-mother practical nursing students and mothers known to have battered their children. The results supported previous findings on ability to recognize cry-signals by mothers and non-mothers. The findings were not supportive of our primary hypothesis to determine if abusive mothers were less likely to correctly identify infant cry-signals than non-abusive mothers.

The Effects Of Temporal Delay Upon Denial As A Means Of Restoring Beliefs Following Succesful Persuasion, Ginny G. Beaubien Jul 1981

The Effects Of Temporal Delay Upon Denial As A Means Of Restoring Beliefs Following Succesful Persuasion, Ginny G. Beaubien

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Students in basic speech courses served as subjects in a study designed to test the efficacy of denial as a restorative agent after subjects' exposure to a belief-lowering attack. Denial was operationalized in two ways: (a) as a simple statement whereby the ostensible source of the attack message denied any connection with the attack, and (b) as a denial plus counter-assertion where the source additionally asserted an opinion directly contrary to that expressed i the attack. Denial treatments were administered either immediately, two days, or seven days after subjects' receipt of the attack message. While the immediate simple denial treatment …

Immediate Learner Achievement As An Effect Of Aesthetic Embellishment In Educational Art, Roger D. Markham Jan 1978

Immediate Learner Achievement As An Effect Of Aesthetic Embellishment In Educational Art, Roger D. Markham

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to test the null hypothesis that there would be no significant difference in the achievement of subjects who are taught the same concepts using two sets of visuals which differ in detail, complexity, accuracy of scale and use of background. A 20-item comprehension test produced non-significant differences between the simple and complex artwork treatments within both the Army Reserve and FTU samples. Subjects in both target audiences achieved approximately the same comprehension level even though the perceived the complex art to be significantly more adequate to teach. The major implication of this study is the possibility …

The Limits Of The Effects Of Machiavellianism On Bargaining Success In Triads, Harry M. Leith Jan 1978

The Limits Of The Effects Of Machiavellianism On Bargaining Success In Triads, Harry M. Leith

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the processes of communication during mixed-motive bargaining in coalition depends to a great extent upon comprehension of the variables which affect it. Certainly one of the most important variables of such communication is the influence of personality effect upon the bargaining outcomes. One personality variable, Machiavellianism, is strongly related to manipulative behavior. This thesis examines both the effects of Machiavellianism on bargaining success in face-to-face triads, and explores the limits of those effects relative to task orientation and personality type disclosure. It was found that Machiavellians are more able bargainers only so long as the nature and identity of …

An Organizational Communication Analysis Of A Medium-Sized Newspaper, Sara Baldwin Howze

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A medium-size newspaper in Central Florida was observed for 8 weeks in the Spring and Summer of 1976 and 58 employees interviewed to determine internal communication patterns and measure attitudes toward the communication system, organization and job related variables. A system theory of organizations provided basic theoretical assumptions. Since communication activities occur within the framework of internal organization elements such as structure, objectives, leadership style, reward system, technology, intergroup relations, and individual employee characteristics, those elements were described. Communication activities were reported in terms of message purpose, network traversed, method of diffusion and relationships. Findings indicated that the nature and …
