Cuba, Social Policy At A Crossroads: Maintaining Priorities, Transforming Practice, Miren Uriarte Nov 2002

Cuba, Social Policy At A Crossroads: Maintaining Priorities, Transforming Practice, Miren Uriarte

Gastón Institute Publications

From the beginning of the Cuban revolution in 1959, the model of social development has underscored equity across society and universal access. Full responsibility rests on government to fund and deliver social entitlements. These values have framed the development and implementation of social policy during the last 40 years. During this time Cuba has instituted free and universally accessible health care and education and has built on its formerly weak pension system to develop a universal and government sponsored one.

Cuba's safety net of benefits includes protection of workers' employment and housing, food subsidies, utilities and other necessities, and mechanisms …

Observations On The Aboriginal Remains In Eastern New Jersey: The Notebook Of Charles F. Woolley, 1878-1881, Megan E. Springate Nov 2002

Observations On The Aboriginal Remains In Eastern New Jersey: The Notebook Of Charles F. Woolley, 1878-1881, Megan E. Springate

Megan E. Springate

Charles F. Woolley was a school teacher and avocational archaeologist in New Jersey in the late nineteenth century. One of his notebooks, which survives in a local history repository, includes details of his collection, which was largely prehistoric. Information from the notebook was used to identify site locations, and to track down several artifacts that Woolley had donated. I have removed specific site location information from this publicly available version of the conference paper.

Companions' roles identified include memory aid, emotional support, transcriber, aid in decision making, companionship, elaboration, advocate for patient, and interpreter. Specific patterns of variability of roles across team member disciplines include relatively passive companions who performed more active roles with physician, relatively active companions who performed more passive roles with physician, and relatively passive companions who performed more active roles when particular topics were raised, regardless of team discipline. Two patterns of stability across interactions emerged: consistently active or passive.

Shadow Of Death: A Fantasy Theme Analysis Of The Floyd Collins Tragedy, Leslie Witty Nov 2002

Shadow Of Death: A Fantasy Theme Analysis Of The Floyd Collins Tragedy, Leslie Witty

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Floyd Collins, a Kentucky caver who suffered a lengthy entrapment and eventual death inside Sand Cave in 1925, has had his story told repeatedly and in numerous forms. Although the countless genres (and their historical accuracy) vary, they are basically retellings of the same story—a story filled with drama, suspense, and heroics. Because of these characteristics, the rhetoric of the Floyd Collins ordeal lent itself to examination using Bormann's (1972) fantasy theme method. By using a fantasy theme analysis to explore the saga, I advanced beyond the retellings and gained a greater understanding of why seventy-seven years after he died …
