The Nixon "Shocks": Implications For Japan's Foreign Policy In The 1970'S, Richard Douglas Partch
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis examines the implications that the Nixon “shocks” may have on Japan’s foreign policy. The data used consisted of books, articles, periodicals, government publications and newspapers. Examined were such important factors as: the attitudes of the political parties in Japan on foreign policy questions, the rapid rise of the Japanese economy and the implications this has had on Japan's relations with other countries, and the question of Japan's possible remilitarization, both in conventional and nuclear terms. In addition, Japan's relations with the other three Great Powers in Asia, (China, the Soviet Union and the United States), are also studied. …

The Response Of The Black Community In Mississippi To The Dixiecrat Movement In 1948, Walter Mcclusky Hurns
The Response Of The Black Community In Mississippi To The Dixiecrat Movement In 1948, Walter Mcclusky Hurns
Morehead State Theses and Dissertations
The thesis of the research is that the States' Right Movement of 1948 in Mississippi helped to create a new political awareness among blacks for the first time since Radical Reconstruction. As a result of the Dixiecrat revolt against Truman and civil rights, blacks in the state became more assertive about their rights and in 1948 organized themselves gradually to demand their civil rights. In response to the Dixiecrat Movement can be found the origins of the civil rights movement of the fifties and sixties.

W. S. U'Ren And The Fight For Government Reform And The Single Tax: 1908-1912, David Elvin Lindstrom
Dissertations and Theses
In the study of Oregon politics, the importance of developments in the early twentieth century have been largely overlooked by popular historians. As a result, many have lost the perspective of the sweeping reforms that reformers presented to Oregon's electorate. Another complicating factor is that voters dealing with the issues during the period had such disparaging attitudes towards some of the reforms, that no thought was given to preserving their memory for future generations. In addition, the personal papers of W. S. U'Ren, Oregon's leading reformer, are not available. This makes perspective even more difficult. Therefore, the research problem is …

The Transition To Nazism, The History Of The German Town Of Pfungstadt, 1928 To 1935, David E. Arns
The Transition To Nazism, The History Of The German Town Of Pfungstadt, 1928 To 1935, David E. Arns
Dissertations and Theses
Pfungstadt is a small German town which to date has not earned a footnote in the histories of either the Weimar Republic or the Third Reich. Based upon the efforts of men in towns like Pfungstadt (and towns which were not like Pfungstadt) the members of the Nazi party built a political structure which reached to the pinnacle upon which Adolf Hitler stood. Researching the growth of the Nazi party, the intense struggles that occurred with democratic forces, the seizure of power and the installation of a workable system of government is the problem. This thesis in no way purports …

The Perception Of Sacred Space: The Case Of Utah And Other Sacred Places In Mormondom, Roger L. Henrie
The Perception Of Sacred Space: The Case Of Utah And Other Sacred Places In Mormondom, Roger L. Henrie
Theses and Dissertations
Sacred space is that part of the total environment which is perceived as sacred by individuals and religious groups. Sacred places may be conveniently divided into five generic categories: mystical, historical, and functional sacred places; and homelands, and places connected with the future fulfillment of prophecy. Sacred places of all five types are found in Mormondom. The temples, as mystical sacred places, were the most sacred. The Sacred Grove was the most sacred historical place. Utah was the most sacred present homeland. The future City of Zion, believed by many to be built in the future in Jackson County, Missouri, …
The Development Of Municipal Government In The Territory Of Utah, Alvin Charles Koritz
The Development Of Municipal Government In The Territory Of Utah, Alvin Charles Koritz
Theses and Dissertations
In 1846 the Mormons were expelled westward from Nauvoo, Illinois. Beyond the borders of the United States, the Mormon Church absorbed the civil functions of municipal government, a pattern which continued in the Great Basin and received the sanction of state authority in 1849 under Deseret.
As the political arm of the "Kingdom of God," the Council of Fifty influenced local political development as its members simultaneously occupied elective offices in both the territorial legislature and municipal government.
During the first decade as a territory, Utah's city charters generally followed the pattern established by Nauvoo in 1840. However, in the …

Aldo Leopold's "Land Ethic": An Ecological Extension Of Albert Schweitzer's "Reverence For Life", John Lee Weaver
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
As a member of the world community, and in the process of becoming a professional ecologist, I have begun a search for a personal ecological ethic to guide my actions. Two of the paths I have taken in my search are Albert Schweitzer's Reverence for Life ethic and Aldo Leopold's Land Ethic. They are relevant because each has extended the scope of ethics beyond Homo Sapiens. Their thoughts, with similarities and dissimilarities, form herein my travels.
A Functional Interpretation Of Pottery From Batan Island, Philippines, Joanne M. Laetsch
A Functional Interpretation Of Pottery From Batan Island, Philippines, Joanne M. Laetsch
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis is a report on a pottery analysis which was carried out in the laboratory of the Department of Anthropology at Portland State University. The earthenware materials involved were collected from three surface sites on Batan Island, Philippines, during the summer of 1969.
The interpretation of these potteries was based upon the direct-historical approach to archaeological research. The use of this method was proposed after a cursory examination of the earthenwares revealed certain general similarities between the archaeological potteries and the ethnographically-known wares produced in the area at the present time. One of the sites was a known habitation, …
A Comparative Study Of The Book Of Mormon Secret Combinations And The American Mafia Organization, Ray G. Morley
A Comparative Study Of The Book Of Mormon Secret Combinations And The American Mafia Organization, Ray G. Morley
Theses and Dissertations
The Book of Mormon and the Book of Moses, sacred scripture of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have woven into their pages a brief history of secret combinations on the "American" continent. Secret combinations have caused the destruction of three previous civilizations that have existed on this continent.
The prophet Moroni warned the Latter-day American inhabitants that "This secret combination... shall be among you..." (Ether 8:24).
The evidence summarized in this study leads one to the conclusion that the American Mafia Organization (Cosa Nostra) is the same organization warned against in sacred scripture.

It is the specific purpose to illustrate the journey to worship of households in the City of Waterloo, Ontario and to explain the spatial pattern utilizing the Principle of Least Effort.
It is discovered that if historical tension and dimensional tension are considered, one is able to predict the actual pattern of the journey to worship with seventy per cent accuracy. The fact that a large per cent of the sample attend the closest church of their …
