Politeia And Arete. Archeology Of Senses And Hellenic Legacy, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Dec 2008

Politeia And Arete. Archeology Of Senses And Hellenic Legacy, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Paulo Ferreira da Cunha

The idea of the Republic and its value is again the order of the day, not only due to Neorepublican theorists, but also because of many current debates, such as multiculturalism, the laicity of states and societies, transparency and corruption, etc. Along with Republican constitutional rules, principles and values, some proclaimed during the French Revolution (such as Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité), the debate shows the importance of an even deeper question: the importance of virtues, and the Greek legacy of Republican virtues. In this paper, among other points, we remember Pericles’ funereal speech in Thucydides’ History of Peloponnesian War, and some …

Presidential Control Over The Regulatory Affairs Of Federal Administrative Agencies, Jennifer Allison Dec 2008

Presidential Control Over The Regulatory Affairs Of Federal Administrative Agencies, Jennifer Allison

Jennifer Allison

This paper outlines the historical exertion of presidential control over the regulatory affairs of federal agencies. It first examines the historical understanding of the constitutionality of examining such control. Then, it describes the two main methods that modern Presidents use to exercise such control: presidential directives and presidential regulatory approval regimes. Finally, it discusses how this has manifested itself during the early days of the Obama administration, exploring the regulatory effects of President Obama's executive order that directed agencies to expand funding programs for research using embryonic stem cells.

Expression Of Cultural Standing In Miami: Cuban Spanish Discourse About Fidel Castro And Cuba, Andrew Lynch Dec 2008

Expression Of Cultural Standing In Miami: Cuban Spanish Discourse About Fidel Castro And Cuba, Andrew Lynch

Andrew Lynch

This study draws upon Claudia Strauss’ (2004) model of cultural standing to analyze opinions regarding Fidel Castro and US-Cuba relations among three major groups of Miami Cubans, identified according to their time of immigration: early 1960s exiles, ‘Marielitos’ and their children (1980 exiles), and the younger generation (Miami-born grandchildren of 1960s exiles). I argue that the discourse features used to convey differing ideological stances on sending aid to Cuba or visiting the Island are reflective of two rather distinct ‘opinion communities’ in Cuban Miami. To that end, I explore the relationship between processes of simplification in the Spanish verb system …

Keeping The Global Recession In Perspective, Karl Widerquist Dec 2008

Keeping The Global Recession In Perspective, Karl Widerquist

Karl Widerquist

The global recession has been spreading and deepening for nearly a year. It could become the worst downturn since the Great Depression of the 1930s, and it has captured nearly all of the attention we, our media, and our leaders pay to economic issues. Perhaps we’re paying too much attention to it. I want to convince you in this editorial that a recession—even a major depression—is not an economic problem of the first magnitude. Our most pressing economic problems are distribution, and they exist whether we are in recession or not. Recessions appear to be a major problem primarily because …

The Aesthetics Of Human Rights, Sharon Sliwinski Dec 2008

The Aesthetics Of Human Rights, Sharon Sliwinski

Sharon Sliwinski

This essay situates the 1755 Lisbon earthquake as an alternate origin point for human rights discourse. As one of the most destructive earthquakes in recorded history, the event had a broad effect on both scientific and philosophical thought. The quake also represents one of the first modern mass media events in which subjects throughout Europe became spectators to a distant catastrophe. Both visual and verbal representations of the event circulated throughout Europe with incredible efficiency and helped inaugurate a secular notion of human suffering as well as thoughts about its prevention. The story of the quake shows that the notion …

Et Ego In Academia, Kirby Farrell Prof Dec 2008

Et Ego In Academia, Kirby Farrell Prof

kirby farrell

Denial of humankind's creaturely limits is characteristic of much literary criticism. Shakespeare consistently dramatizes the limits of language, seeking to evoke wonder or a tragic sense of madness and chaos through an overplus of meanings in paradox, irony, and wordplay that cannot be processed sequentially by imagination.
