Peirce's "Diagrammatic Reasoning" As A Solution Of The Learning Paradox, Michael H.G. Hoffmann Jan 2003

Peirce's "Diagrammatic Reasoning" As A Solution Of The Learning Paradox, Michael H.G. Hoffmann

Michael H.G. Hoffmann

How can we reach “new” levels of knowledge if “new” means that there is something “evolved” that cannot be generated simply by deduction or by induction from what has been given before. The paper’s first goal is to show that two paradigmatic attempts at solving this so-called “learning paradox,” Plato’s apriorism and Aristotle’s inductivism, form two horns of a dilemma: While the inductivist cannot justify any representation of data without assuming a priori given hypotheses, the apriorist cannot justify why a certain application of given ideas is correct without being caught in an infinite regress. The second goal is to …

Material Culture As Memory: Combs And Cremation In Early Medieval Britain, Howard M. R. Williams Jan 2003

Material Culture As Memory: Combs And Cremation In Early Medieval Britain, Howard M. R. Williams

Howard M. R. Williams

This paper argues that mortuary practices can be understood as ‘technologies of remembrance’. The frequent discovery of combs in early medieval cremation burials can be explained by their mnemonic significance in the post-cremation rite. Combs (and other objects used to maintain the body’s surface in life) served to articulate the reconstruction of the deceased’s personhood in death through strategies of remembering and forgetting. This interpretation suggests new perspectives on the elationships between death, material culture and social memory in early medieval Europe.

Consensus, Legitimacy, And The Exercise Of Judgement In Political Deliberation, Cillian Mcbride Jan 2003

Consensus, Legitimacy, And The Exercise Of Judgement In Political Deliberation, Cillian Mcbride

Cillian McBride

Deliberative Democrats have been criticised for promoting an overly consensual style of politics. Agonistic democrats argue that this is because they allow justice to displace ‘the political’ while others make the opposite charge: deliberative democrats pay insufficient attention to justice and the confrontational style of politics which may be necessary to secure social justice. I argue that the deliberative model aims at strengthening democratic legitimacy, not at producing consensus and that it is centrally concerned with stimulating the exercise of citizens’ capacity for judgement. The duty of civility should be regarded as a duty to make impartial judgements, not as …

Sympathy, Cumulativity, And The Duke-Of-York Gambit, John J. Mccarthy Jan 2003

Sympathy, Cumulativity, And The Duke-Of-York Gambit, John J. Mccarthy

John J. McCarthy

The Duke-of-York gambit (Pullum 1976) involves derivations of the form A->B->A, where underlying /A/ passes through an intermediate stage B before returning to A at the surface. Optimality Theory (Prince and Smolensky 1993) has significant implications for the Duke of York gambit. Furthermore, attested and unattested Duke-of-York cases have implications for the analysis of opacity in Optimality Theory using sympathy (McCarthy 1998, to appear). A key idea pursued in this paper is that derivations must be cumulative, and a measure of cumulativity is incorporated into sympathy theory.

What Does Comparative Markedness Explain, What Should It Explain, And How?, John J. Mccarthy Jan 2003

What Does Comparative Markedness Explain, What Should It Explain, And How?, John J. Mccarthy

John J. McCarthy

These seven commentaries treat a wide range of topics in interesting and insightful ways. It is not possible to write a coherent response that addresses all of the criticisms and suggestions, large and small, that the authors have brought up. Several main themes emerge, however, that transcend the individual commentaries, and these themes supply the structure for this reply. They include alternatives to comparative markedness, possible counterexamples, comparative markedness on other dimensions of correspondence, and questions about the authenticity of opaque phonological processes. These themes will each be addressed in turn.

Ot Constraints Are Categorical, John J. Mccarthy Jan 2003

Ot Constraints Are Categorical, John J. Mccarthy

John J. McCarthy

In Optimality Theory, constraints come in two types, which are distinguished by their mode of evaluation. Categorical constraints are either satisfied or not; a categorical constraint assigns no more than one violation-mark, unless there are several violating structures in the form under evaluation. Gradient constraints evaluate extent of deviation; they can assign multiple marks even when there is just a single instance of the non-conforming structure. This article proposes a restrictive definition of what an OT constraint is, from which it follows that all constraints must be categorical. The various gradient constraints that have been proposed are examined, and it …

Comparing The African American And The Oromo Movements In The Global Context, Asafa Jalata

Asafa Jalata

The African American and Oromo movements have been anti-colonial struggles, and they have aimed to dismantle racial/ethnonational hierarchies legitimated by the ideology of racism in the hegemonic state of the United States and the peripheral and imperial state of Ethiopia.

Rights, Individualism, Community: Aristotle And The Communitarian-Liberalism Debate, Jeffery L. Nicholas Jan 2003

Rights, Individualism, Community: Aristotle And The Communitarian-Liberalism Debate, Jeffery L. Nicholas

Jeffery L Nicholas

I argue that Aristotle could not be a fore-runner to liberalism, because his view of humanity is that human beings are constituted by a community and achieve self-fulfillment only as so constituted. Thus, Aristotle endorses a unique position that defends the freedom and self-development of the individual within the parameters of a social order.

African American Student Athletes' Perceptions Of Career Transition In Sport: A Qualitative And Visual Elicitation, Keith Harrison Dec 2002

African American Student Athletes' Perceptions Of Career Transition In Sport: A Qualitative And Visual Elicitation, Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

This study focuses on 26 African American athletes and explores their perceptions of athletic career transition. Participants consisted of student athletes from a United States National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division IIA institution in the Southeastern region. Participants completed the Life After Sports Scale (LASS), a 58-item inventory utilized to qualitatively and quantitatively examine seven different domains which influence perceptions of the career transition process. The scope of this inquiry examines the qualitative domain of the LASS in which participants were visually primed with a narrative description of a student athlete that has made transition out of sport successfully. Five …

Latin American Education's Computing Crisis, Paul J. Rich Dec 2002

Latin American Education's Computing Crisis, Paul J. Rich

Paul J. Rich

For a number of years I went around the world beating the drum for the role of computing in education. That has become a too familiar tune and now the focus is on aspects of computing in schools and universities rather than the general need to introduce the topic. However, we are just at the start of a revolution...
