Rights, Individualism, Community: Aristotle And The Communitarian-Liberalism Debate, Jeffery Nicholas Jul 2015

Rights, Individualism, Community: Aristotle And The Communitarian-Liberalism Debate, Jeffery Nicholas

Jeffery Nicholas

I argue that Aristotle could not be a fore-runner to liberalism, because his view of humanity is that human beings are constituted by a community and achieve self-fulfillment only as so constituted. Thus, Aristotle endorses a unique position that defends the freedom and self-development of the individual within the parameters of a social order.

The Camel's Nose Is In The Tent: Rules, Theories And Slippery Slopes, Mario Rizzo, Glen Whitman Dec 2003

The Camel's Nose Is In The Tent: Rules, Theories And Slippery Slopes, Mario Rizzo, Glen Whitman

Mario Rizzo

The authors provide a general theory for understanding and evaluating slippery slope arguments (SSAs) and their associated slippery slope events (SSEs). The central feature of the theory is a structure of discussion within which all arguments take place. The structure is multi-layered, consisting of decisions, rules, theories, and research programs. Each layer influences and shapes the layer beneath: rules influences decisions, theories influence the choice of rules, and research programs influence the choice of theories. In this structure, SSAs take the form of meta-arguments, as they purport to predict the future development of arguments in this structure. Evaluating such arguments requires …

Kapitalizmus És Szocializmus Bibó István Gondolatrendszerében [István Bibó On Capitalism And Socialism], Peter Cserne Oct 2003

Kapitalizmus És Szocializmus Bibó István Gondolatrendszerében [István Bibó On Capitalism And Socialism], Peter Cserne

Péter Cserne

Although István Bibó’s (1911–1979) reputation in Hungary is based on his political and historical essays, he has written much on economic and social issues as well. As an anti-speculative thinker, he formulated his views each time in the context of actual economic and social problems. Starting from the critique of modernity and a sort of elitism in the 30’s, his interest turned toward the serious deformations of Hungarian social structure, especially the situation of the agrarian population. His great private lecture on The Meaning of the Development of European Society (1971–72) treated the history of Europe from a philosophical perspective …

Brotherly Love In Philadelphia: Reports Of Its Demise Are Exaggerated, Paul J. Rich

Paul J. Rich

While concentrating on Philadelphia, the paper by inference supports the idea that the study of associationalism, social capital and fraternalism can profitably be done on a city by city basis, and that the view that society affiliations have succumbed to television-induced aloneness may be overstated.

Review Of The Korean Alphabet Of 1446 By Sek Yen Kim-Cho And The Korean Alphabet By Young-Key Kim-Renaud, David Silva

David Silva

Perhaps the most noteworthy product of Korean civilization, han'gŭl is a source of pride among Koreans: not only does it embody a sense of national uniqueness, but it is also a valuable tool against illiteracy. While this great cultural achievement has merited considerable attention in Korea, detailed English-language accounts of han'gŭl are scarce. Most prominent among this small body of work is Gari Ledyard's 1966 dissertation, "The Korean Language Reform of 1446," since republished (with modest revisions) in 1998. Two recent volumes about the Korean script are now looking to claim space alongside Ledyard's text: The Korean Alphabet of 1446 …

A Primer On U.S. Intellectual Property Rights Applicable To Music Information Retrieval Systems, Michael W. Carroll

Digital technology has had a significant impact on the ways in which music information can be stored, transmitted, and used. Within the information sciences, music information retrieval has become an increasingly important and complex field. This brief article is addressed primarily to those involved in the design and implementation of systems for storing and retrieving digital files containing musical notation, recorded music, and relevant metadata – hereinafter referred to as a Music Information Retrieval System (“MIRS”). In particular, this group includes information specialists, software engineers, and the attorneys who advise them. Although peer-to-peer computer applications, such as Napster’s MusicShare or …

Genocide In The Non-Western World: Implications For Holocaust Studies, Robert Cribb

Japan And Transformation Of National Identities In The Imperial Era, Li Narangoa, Robert Cribb Jan 2003

Japan And Transformation Of National Identities In The Imperial Era, Li Narangoa, Robert Cribb

Robert Cribb

Japan's view of the nationality of its Asian neightbours took many forms during the imperial era. In some respects Japan asserted its superiority to those neighbours, in other respects saw them as nations with a standing equal to that of Japan. The working out of these two views reflected Japanese strategic interests.

Environmentalism In Indonesian Politics, Robert Cribb

Robert Cribb

Environmential politics emerged in Indonesia during the autheoritarian Suharto era. Rather than being a reaction to Suharto's predatory approach to the environment, many environmental policies were closely tied to the managerial, technocratic and campaign-oriented approach of the New Order.

Science, Identity, And The Construction Of The Gay Political Narrative, Nancy J. Knauer Jan 2003

Science, Identity, And The Construction Of The Gay Political Narrative, Nancy J. Knauer

Nancy J. Knauer

This Article contends that the current debate over gay civil rights is, at base, a dispute over the nature of same-sex desire. Pro-gay forces advocate an ethnic or identity model of homosexuality based on the conviction that sexual orientation is an immutable, unchosen, and benign characteristic. The assertion that, in essence, gays are "born that way," has produced a gay political narrative that rests on claims of shared identity (i.e., homosexuals are a blameless minority) and arguments of equivalence (i.e., as a blameless minority, homosexuals deserve equal treatment and protection against discrimination). The pro-family counter-narrative is based on a behavioral …

Steamboats Of Monmouth County, New Jersey. Lecture Presented At The Atlantic Highlands Historical Society, Atlantic Highlands, Nj, November, 2003., Megan E. Springate

Megan E. Springate

Steamboats provided a critical commercial link between Monmouth County, New Jersey and New York City from the early nineteenth through the third quarter of the twentieth centuries. Over 200 vessels have been documented as plying Monmouth County's waters, carrying farm goods to market and leisure patrons to the shore. This presentation summarizes the steamboat's history in Monmouth County, and provides several examples of vessels that ran in the area.
