Speaking Volumes: Transforming Archival Access Through Speech-To-Text Transcription, Rebecca Bakker

This workshop was offered by the South Florida Archives Collective and offered a comprehensive overview of speech recognition software, highlighting the difference between dictation and transcription and showcasing the efficacy of speech-to-text technology. Participants learned about its application in archival contexts and how it improves accessibility, aids research endeavors, and enables close reading aids for extensive data extraction and knowledge acquisition. Through a case study on the Dana A. Dorsey Papers, the presenter illustrated best practices for transcription processes, including software selection, workflow optimization, and handling formatting nuances.

Athenaeum: Scholarly Works of the FIU Libraries Faculty and Staff

This poster will discuss our experiences as archivists in a University Library Special Collections Department working toward creating and implementing descriptive metadata practices that are inclusive of the individuals and communities who create, use, and are represented throughout collections. We will present our project decisions and specific examples of new descriptive practices and remediation steps we have taken in the past two years, in the hopes that our experiences will provide a model with recommendations for an ethical archival practice that leads to broader access of important manuscript collections.

The goal of this research project was to determine the most effective facial recognition applications that could be implemented into digital archive image collections from libraries, museums, and cultural heritage institutions. Computer scientists and librarians at Florida International University collaborated to conduct qualitative assessments of both face detection and face search using photographs from FIU’s digital collections. Specifically, the facial recognition platforms OpenCV, Face++, and Amazon AWS were analyzed. This workshop explored how to best promote the use of special collections and archives to the teaching community of South Florida. The presenters conducted this training to connect South Florida area teachers with resources for using primary source material in the classroom as part of a larger grant-funded project entitled, “Finding Our Place in History: Engaging Students with Local History through Online Primary Source Sets.” This workshop for educators introduced FIU’s primary source set and highlighted techniques for engaging with digital primary sources in the K-12 classroom.

Digital librarians work to balance the sometimes competing goals of stewardship and access all while being responsive to the needs of patrons, content owners, and creators. This presentation explores the often unforeseen challenges and issues that can arise with the creation and management of digital collections. While ingesting digitized works into a repository brings up ever-present concerns such as copyright, others challenges exist within the realm of privacy (stalking, harassment, digital anonymity), plagiarism, and ownership (false claims of ownership) that are almost always unexpected.

Implementing Facial Recognition Technology In A Municipal Archives Digitization Project, Rebecca Bakker

This poster at the 2019 annual meeting of the South Florida Archivists highlights a project where the facial recognition technology of Adobe Lightroom CC is used to identify individuals in photographs held by a local municipal archive. The photographs contain hundreds of images showing unnamed commissioners and city workers from the 1970s to the 1990s, with most of the images lacking metadata or information. Various strategies are employed to identify key city officials in the photographs, allowing their names to be added to the metadata of the records hosted in a digital repository. This presentation explores the challenges that librarians and graduate schools face in encouraging open access behaviours. While librarians realize the benefits of open access research for both current students and society as a whole, many disparate factors often converge, causing academic departments to actively counteract open access research practices. This presentation was given at the Panhandle Library Access Network's (PLAN) Innovation Conference: Digitization- Preserving the Past for the Future Conference on August 14th, 2015. The presentation uses a specific collection of directories as a case study of the complications librarians and archivists face in digitizing older materials that may also be quite large, such as a directory. Prime OCR and Abbyy Fine Reader are discussed and their pros and cons covered. Troubleshooting and editing with Adobe Photoshop is also discussed.

This poster presentation from the May 2015 Florida Library Association Conference, along with the Everglades Explorer discovery portal at http://ee.fiu.edu, demonstrates how traditional bibliographic and curatorial principles can be applied to: 1) selection, cross-walking and aggregation of metadata linking end-users to wide-spread digital resources from multiple silos; 2) harvesting of select PDFs, HTML and media for web archiving and access; 3) selection of CMS domains, sub-domains and folders for targeted searching using an API.
