The Deisher Site (36bk450): Reconciling And Reconstructing The Evidence For The Location And Date Of A Probable Lenape Cemetery Site Identified By 1847, Marshall Joseph Becker

Anthropology & Sociology Faculty Publications

Archived documents as well as records from local oral traditions abound within each of the American colonies. Gathering the accounts relevant to a specific Native American site reveals the extent of such information and how it can help us to reconstruct culture histories for the numerous tribal entities for whom detailed histories are often wanting. The period from 1700 to 1750 in Pennsylvania saw a wide assortment of complex responses of a number of local and immigrant tribal entities as each sought a mechanism by which to maintain their cultural heritage. The Deisher site (36Bk450) has long been known, but …

Book Review Of The Orientalizing And Lucanian Tombs From Loc. De Santis I At Pontecagnano, By Margit Von Mehren, Marshall Joseph Becker

Anthropology & Sociology Faculty Publications

Von Mehren’s impressive volume provides one means of gauging the progress that has been made in studies of ancient cemeteries in the region surrounding the Gulf of Naples. The author has undertaken the daunting task of publishing funerary data that had been recovered decades earlier, during a period when physical anthropology in Italy remained a research area largely separated from mainstream classical archaeology. The information available to von Mehren had been collected during a four month “rescue project” in 1967–1968 at the Località De Santis I, after which the field notes and artifacts were held in storage. The area excavated …

Ashes To Caches: Is Dust Dust Among The Heterarchichal Maya?, Marshall Joseph Becker Jun 2020

Ashes To Caches: Is Dust Dust Among The Heterarchichal Maya?, Marshall Joseph Becker

Anthropology & Sociology Faculty Publications

Caches and burials, or specially placed deposits of all types, among the Classic Period lowland Maya represent the material remains of religious or ritual behaviors. These behaviors are shared by people of all economic levels but expanded according to available economic resources. Discussions of these aspects of material culture commonly focus on elite or upscale examples found within various contexts. At Tikal, as at other Lowland Maya sites, the expression of these rituals varied by the wealth of the participants. Elite offerings involved greater quantities of precious and durable goods such as jade, marine shell, and elaborate lithic items. [FIGURE …

Almenas Revisited: Archaeology At Cihuatán, El Salvador With Observations And Suggestions For Further Research On Roof Ornaments, Marshall Joseph Becker Oct 2019

Almenas Revisited: Archaeology At Cihuatán, El Salvador With Observations And Suggestions For Further Research On Roof Ornaments, Marshall Joseph Becker

Anthropology & Sociology Faculty Publications

A focused study of almenas, or decorative roof ornaments, at Cihuatán in El Salvador revealed that a wide range of structures were adorned with examples in ceramic. The best known examples, from Structure Q-1, provide indications of how these decorations were arranged, but left unanswered many questions about their use. Studies of roof ornaments at other sites confirm Pre-Classic origins in the Valley of Mexico and their use well into the 1500s, and their wide use in Yucatan and elsewhere. Suggestions regarding socio-political or ideological correlates may be premature, but help to structure programs for future research.

Surface Survey And Ground Testing At Sam's Site (36ch283): A Multicomponent Site In Chester County, Pennsylvania With A Nearby Shenks Ferry Occupation, Marshall Joseph Becker

Anthropology & Sociology Faculty Publications

Surface collecting from 36Ch283, a multicomponent site in southcentral Chester County, Pennsylvania, suggests that activities at this location over a long period of time were confined to a very slight rise not larger than 15 by 25 m. Phase II testing of the area adjacent to this site revealed a possible Shenks Ferry habitation area located on the shallower grade above the knoll, at a short distance from the focus of surface collecting. The very different picture presented by the surface finds, however impoverished by intensive activities of amateur collectors, demonstrates the importance of surface collections in the interpretation of …

Arsenic And Old Pelts: An Update On Deadly Pesticides In Museum Collections, Alice B. Kehoe, Marshall Joseph Becker Oct 2019

Arsenic And Old Pelts: An Update On Deadly Pesticides In Museum Collections, Alice B. Kehoe, Marshall Joseph Becker

Anthropology & Sociology Faculty Publications

The use of toxic chemicals within museums is an issue only recently addressed by anthropologists and scholars in related fields. A case of arsenic poisoning in an anthropologist during the 1960s is reviewed for what it may tell us about a mysterious ailment that afflicted Clark Wissler 50 years earlier. While no conclusive diagnosis can be made, Wissler’s case reminds us that we have come a long way in protecting against one of the lesser known dangers confronting anthropologists. All museums use pesticides and preservatives of some form, though the health impact of these agents is not always known. This …

Book Review Of Frontiers Of Colonialism, Edited By Christine D. Beaule, Marshall Joseph Becker Oct 2019

Book Review Of Frontiers Of Colonialism, Edited By Christine D. Beaule, Marshall Joseph Becker

Anthropology & Sociology Faculty Publications

Determination of cultural frontiers has become an important goal of archaeological research. Beaule, an Andean archaeologist specializing in the study of households, has assembled the work of 15 scholars to address “frontiers” as they are variously conceptualized in archaeology. In this book, she recognizes not only the geopolitical frontiers that are basic to understanding culture and culture history, but also boundaries created by chronology, methodology, and theory. Crossing these many “frontiers” is the primary concern of this volume.

Stone Moulds In Sardinian Museum Collections: Indicators Of Bronze Age Metallurgical Technology, Marshall Joseph Becker Jan 2018

Stone Moulds In Sardinian Museum Collections: Indicators Of Bronze Age Metallurgical Technology, Marshall Joseph Becker

Anthropology & Sociology Faculty Publications

The casting of tools from copper and bronze using stone moulds has a history that dates back to the earliest smelting of metals. Sardinia has an abundance of deposits for steatite and related soft stone types that can be easily carved to form moulds for a wide range of shapes. A wide range of stone blocks with or or more forms for the casting of bronze tools have been conserved in several museums in Sardinia. This detailed catalogue, with individual drawings, provide insights into the manufacture of tools for a number of different types of bronze artifacts such as those …
