Avoidance Of The Relative Clause By Korean Learners Of English, Matthew J. Bjers, Bob A. Massicotte Apr 2015

Avoidance Of The Relative Clause By Korean Learners Of English, Matthew J. Bjers, Bob A. Massicotte

Linguistic Portfolios

The purpose of the following paper is to explore the use of the English relative clause by Korean speaking students of English. It will investigate the claim made by previous researchers that Korean learners of English are prone to avoiding the English relative clause because of its complex construction. In order to do this, the construction of the relative clause in both Korean and English will be explored. From there, student written pieces will be analyzed in an attempt to identify the frequency of relative clause constructions, and to what extent – if any – avoidance has occurred. Afterwards, pedagogical …

Second-Language Phonology Learning And Neuroplasticity, Jonathan Rawski Apr 2015

Second-Language Phonology Learning And Neuroplasticity, Jonathan Rawski

Linguistic Portfolios

Why do adults retain a marked accent in foreign languages? Despite learning and reaching proficiency in other second language (L2) linguistics domains, adults have an extremely difficult time absorbing, recognizing, and utilizing a new phonology. Traditional linguistics and biology hold that a critical period inversely affects language learning ability with age. However, recent advances in brain imaging and knowledge of neuroscience alter this notion. We argue for a separation between language learning and language acquisition. We also present a new model for adult L2 learning, called the Attention Model. This model focuses on linguistic awareness between an L1 and L2, …

The Pronunciation Of Voiceless Th In Seven Varieties Of L2 Englishes: Focus On Intelligibility, Ettien Koffi

Linguistic Portfolios

This is a comprehensive instrumental account of the phonetic realizations [θ] in L2 Englishes. It involves the analysis of 539 segments and 77 spectrographs of [θ] produced by 10 native speakers of General American English and 67 L2 speakers of English. They all produced the same [θ] segment in the words , , , , and . The quantitative analysis of the impressionistic transcriptions shows that [θ] was produced successfully 208 out of 335 occurrences by non-native speakers 62.08%. The impressionistic data also shows that [θ] was produced as [t̪] 44 times (13.14%), as [s] 36 times (10.74%), as [f] …

Order Of Acquisition: A Comparison Of L1 And L2 English And Spanish Morpheme Acquisition, Kyle A. Mcferren Apr 2015

Order Of Acquisition: A Comparison Of L1 And L2 English And Spanish Morpheme Acquisition, Kyle A. Mcferren

Senior Honors Theses

This paper examines the order of acquisition for grammatical morphemes in Spanish and English first and second language learners. Brown’s first morpheme order study, conducted in 1973, laid the foundation for what would become one of the most common types of study conducted within the field of second language acquisition. The four orders of acquisition relevant here are examined and compared in order to support the roles of salience, morphophonological regularity, complexity, input frequency, and native language transfer in first and/or second language acquisition. The conclusion is that these five determinants work interdependently in determining the difficulty of acquiring a …

Operationalizing Success In A Digital Learning Environment Designed To Support Vulnerable Adults, Elizabeth Withers, Jill Castek, Robert Fountain, Drew Pizzolato, Kimberly D. Pendell, Gloria Jacobs, Stephen Reder

Presentations and Publications

This study seeks to examine patterns of successful learning identified when economically vulnerable, underserved, and high-need adults engaged in self-access, tutor facilitated learning to acquire digital literacy. In large part, this diverse population of learners has been left behind in the digital revolution, thus compounding their social, economic, and educational disadvantages. These individuals have unique patterns of engagement within educational endeavors, at times dropping in and out of programs as a result of social and economic impediments that permeate their lives. Traditional means of identifying success in their learning endeavors inadequately describe the paths these learners take on the road …

The Effect Of Motivational Languaging Activities On L2 Learning Motivation: Cases Of Efl Students In South Korea, Tae-Young Kim Mar 2015

The Effect Of Motivational Languaging Activities On L2 Learning Motivation: Cases Of Efl Students In South Korea, Tae-Young Kim

Dr. Tae-Young Kim (김태영, 金兌英)

This study highlights the effect of languaging activities on students' EFL-learning motivation. By presenting two different studies, I argue that Swain's concept of languaging can be applied to primary/secondary school students' L2 learning. Motivational languaging activities were particularly useful for elementary school students. Opinion writing group showed significant increase in their motivational constructs at the end of experimentation.

Philology, Anthropology And Poetry In Arthur Waley's Translation Of The Shijing, Qingyang Lin Mar 2015

Philology, Anthropology And Poetry In Arthur Waley's Translation Of The Shijing, Qingyang Lin

Theses & Dissertations

The topic of my thesis is Arthur Waley and his translation of the Shijing, or The Book of Songs (1937), as Waley entitled it. The Book of Songs is especially noted for its philological ingenuity, anthropological insight and poetic appeal; during my preliminary research I discovered that there exists an interesting interplay between these three aspects of this translation. In this thesis, I hope to examine the textual and thematic hermeneutics of The Book of Songs.

Waley did not read the Shijing as a scriptural text inscribed with sagely intention and authority; rather, he returned it to its folkloric origin, …

Research Approaches And Student Surveys: A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Beata Malczewska-Webb

Beata Webb

Extract: In the last 20 years, the nature of education worldwide has been undergoing a rapid change from the homogenous classes of students of similar backgrounds, to the ever-changing classroom populations of students of different nationalities, of diverse cultural, educational and linguistic backgrounds (AE12013). The increasing awareness of this diversity and the impact it has on education in many countries including Australia, has attracted much attention from researchers in the recent years (Creese et al. 2009; Dunn and Carroll 2005; Lo Bianco 2009; Malczewska-Webb 2011; Webb 2013, 2014). Although researchers from other fields such as social work or psychology (Suarez-Balcazar …

Unravelling Power And Privilege In The Academy: A Personal Account, Timothy Mossman Mar 2015

Unravelling Power And Privilege In The Academy: A Personal Account, Timothy Mossman

International Journal of Christianity and English Language Teaching

This article explores the author’s privileged identities as a White, male researcher and English language educator in the context of relevant critical literature. I aim to understand how my privileged identities granted by race, gender, societal placement, and language interact with my identity as an evangelical Christian and how these identities impact my research and practice in working with multilingual transnational youth in a Canadian university setting. Highlighting the importance of reflexivity in qualitative research and its potential impact on both researcher and student identities, I probe my acquired identities (unearned societal placement) and ascribed identities (spiritual gifts, passions, abilities, …

Elt And Empowerment: Questions, Observations, And Reflections For Christian Educators, Michael Lessard-Clouston Mar 2015

Elt And Empowerment: Questions, Observations, And Reflections For Christian Educators, Michael Lessard-Clouston

International Journal of Christianity and English Language Teaching

As a field, English language teaching (ELT) has come under attack from a number of critical practitioners. In the classroom, English language teachers aim to empower our students by helping them improve their English abilities and skills. Yet there are discrepancies in terms of who learns and uses English for various purposes. Are English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) teachers helping, or are we part of the ‘problem’ in ELT, as critics suggest? This article poses four questions in order for readers to consider issues in ELT and empowerment. In doing so, it summarizes observations from both the …

Exploring The Role Of Spirituality In The Ecology Of Language Learning, Teresa Lin Mar 2015

Exploring The Role Of Spirituality In The Ecology Of Language Learning, Teresa Lin

International Journal of Christianity and English Language Teaching

With the presence of many Christian missionaries in the field of TESOL, numerous educators have raised concerns about the ethical issues surrounding evangelistic outreach via English language teaching (ELT). Christian English Teachers (CETs) in the field of TESOL have faced criticism for manipulation of student-teacher relationships, unethical religious coercion, and cultural insensitivity. Current positivist views render religious discussions in the classroom as detrimental to ELT. While proselytizing via ELT is a serious ethical issue, the backlash against religion and spiritual beliefs is also quite alarming. Disregard for the spiritual underpinnings motivating and influencing the way students learn limits how complex …

Living Out The Christian Faith In The Writing Classroom, Icy Lee

International Journal of Christianity and English Language Teaching

This article addresses three questions from the perspective of a Christian writing teacher educator: (1) How can we live out our Christian faith and values in the teaching of writing? (2) How can we help students become more aware of issues of spirituality and develop God-given abilities through writing? (3) How can we encourage students to write in ways that are pleasing to God? To address the first question, I draw mainly upon my own research on feedback and classroom writing assessment in L2 writing, as well as my experience as a writing teacher educator in Hong Kong, and address …

Australian Experience Of Culturally Diverse University Classrooms, Beata Malczewska-Webb Feb 2015

Australian Experience Of Culturally Diverse University Classrooms, Beata Malczewska-Webb

Beata Webb

In the last twenty years, Australia has become one of the favoured destinations for international students who come to study not only English as a Second Language but also all programs at all levels including primary, secondary and tertiary as well as industry training. The internationalisation of education has attracted researchers’ attention particularly in the past ten years. One of the central issues affecting both students and teachers is the changing increasing diversity of the student population and issues associated with it. Recent research into diverse classrooms indicates the complexity of issues in secondary and ESL education or teacher training …
