A Study Of The Correlation Between Alcoholism And Fingerprint Patterns, Miyo Yokota
A Study Of The Correlation Between Alcoholism And Fingerprint Patterns, Miyo Yokota
Masters Theses
The study of 51 white male alcoholics and 50 white male nonalcoholics between the ages of 15 and 40 was undertaken to learn whether there are differences in the fingerprint patterns between the two groups. Previous research demonstrated that fingerprint patterns are genetically determined and influenced by the intrauterine environment. Fingerprint patterns, ridge counts, pattern intensity index, pattern type symmetry and ridge counts on whorls were studied. Both groups were compared by means of the Z statistics and chi-square tests. It was hoped that the differences observed in the fingerprint patterns of the two groups could be used as a …
Organization Of Technology And Lithic Analysis: Prehistoric Occupation Of The Hayes Site (40ml139), Philip J. Carr
Organization Of Technology And Lithic Analysis: Prehistoric Occupation Of The Hayes Site (40ml139), Philip J. Carr
Masters Theses
The Hayes Site (40ML139) is located in the central Duck River Basin of Middle Tennessee. Excavations at the site revealed Middle Archaic, late Middle Archaic, and Late Archaic components. An examination of the lithic assemblage from the Hayes Site aids in assessing and building models of hunter-gatherer organization for the central Duck River Basin. An organizational perspective on technology, results from published flintknapping experiments, and a lithic resource survey provide the means of constructing and employing an interpretive framework for understanding prehistoric occupation of the Hayes Site. It was found that materials from the Middle Archaic components represent forager residences …
Quantitative Effects Of Skeletonizing Processes On Bone Density, Rex Mcdonald
Quantitative Effects Of Skeletonizing Processes On Bone Density, Rex Mcdonald
Masters Theses
(From the Conclusion)
This study has focused on the alterations of bone when processed in aqueous solution. The author finds the process of immersing bone in aqueous as an unacceptable manner to process osseous materials. When bone is processed by insects, within a sheltered environment, the loss of inorganic material is almost non-existent. This study has shown that the use of water in almost every case, has caused an alteration in the baseline of the Bone Mineral Content.
The Siriono People Of Eastern Bolivia: Cultural Survival Amidst Directed Social Change, Ronald S. Scholte
The Siriono People Of Eastern Bolivia: Cultural Survival Amidst Directed Social Change, Ronald S. Scholte
Masters Theses
This thesis is an ethno-historical reconstruction of the Siriono from their roots among the Paraguayan Guarani of the 16th century to the present Siriono life styles in eastern Bolivia. A description of the Siriono culture at the time of contact is juxtaposed with analyses of the current varying results of post-contact approaches to directed social change taken by outsiders among the Siriono.
The findings from this study indicate that: (a) to the extent that underdevelopment does exist among the Siriono it is not only the result of contact this century, but began as a process of deculturation long before contact; …
The Burnett Site: A Cascade Phase Camp On The Lower Willamette River, Robert M. Burnett
The Burnett Site: A Cascade Phase Camp On The Lower Willamette River, Robert M. Burnett
Dissertations and Theses
Artifacts recovered from archaeological excavations near the Willamette River in Lake Oswego, Oregon indicate the presence there of a Late Windust-Early Cascade Phase site possibly dating to 9,000 B.P. The assemblage includes 137 projectile points, bifaces or point fragments, nearly all of the Cascade-type. Two stem fragments and one complete point which are similar to those of the Windust Phase which dates 10,000-8,000 B.P. in the southern Columbia Plateau also were found. Stone knives, choppers, scrapers, hammerstones, cores and microblades also are included in the assemblage. No later type notched or stemmed points have been recovered from the site. If …

Nailing Down The Pattern In Historical Archaeology, Amy L. Young
Nailing Down The Pattern In Historical Archaeology, Amy L. Young
Masters Theses
This study suggests that middle-range research has an important role to play in historical archaeology. Three models are developed for interpreting nail assemblages from 19th and 20th century contexts. All models are based upon ethnoarchaeology, experimental archaeology, and direct observations of nails operating in their systemic contexts. The first model allows for discriminating between a nail assemblage from an ephemeral structure site and an assemblage from a dump site. The second model enables the archaeologist to identify whether a building was log, timber frame, or balloon frame construction. The third model is designed to discriminate between nail assemblages where structures …
The Age-Related Effects Of Reproduction On Bone Mineral Density In Saddle-Back Tamarins (Saguinus Fuscicollis, Callitrichidae, Primates), Rachel A. Power
The Age-Related Effects Of Reproduction On Bone Mineral Density In Saddle-Back Tamarins (Saguinus Fuscicollis, Callitrichidae, Primates), Rachel A. Power
Masters Theses
This research examines the age-related effects of reproduction on bone mineral density in saddle-back tamarins (Sanguinus fuscicollis). Analyses of variance and bootstrapping statistical techniques were performed on a sample of 69 tamarins (31 males and 38 females) in order to determine the relationship between bone mineral density, age, gender, and reproductive status. The total sample of tamarins exhibits a significant decrease in bone mineral density with age, paralleling the condition observable in humans and Old World monkeys. Of particular interest are the results observable in the female sample relative to reproductive status. A significant increase in bone mineral …

Waitperson/Customer Interaction As An Example Of Community, Patricia Louise Macaodha
Waitperson/Customer Interaction As An Example Of Community, Patricia Louise Macaodha
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis draws from research done in a particular urban setting, and illustrates the foundations of a type of social structure called "respite community". "Respite community" is a specifically urban phenomenon which can be defined as temporal, ad hoc, face to face, an aggregate of people who seek temporary relief from social stresses and support through socialized interaction.
The Empire Strikes Out? A Look At The Nationalities Crisis In The Soviet Union, Catherine E. Breen
The Empire Strikes Out? A Look At The Nationalities Crisis In The Soviet Union, Catherine E. Breen
Honors Theses
My thesis rests on the notion that, because of the increase of freedoms in the Soviet Union today, many republics are demanding that their autonomy be restored and that this nationality crisis, an unforeseen and unwanted byproduct of recent reforms, has grown into such a disaster that it is now actually impairing the whole reform movement in the Soviet Union as civil unrest and strife are beginning to threaten the stability of this huge empire.
Ethnic identity is not something that can be hidden, changed, forced, or converted, nor will national and cultural roots simply disappear over time. Thus, the …
