Electrical Feedthrough And Its Preparation, Leonard E. Peck, Timothy S. Romano, Tom K. Evans, Gary B. Hughes, Karl H. Neumann

Statistics

An electrical feedthrough (34) is prepared by furnishing an aluminum oxide feedthrough plate (70) and at least one feedthrough pin (80) having a length greater than the thickness of the feedthrough plate (70). A pin bore (78) is formed through the feedthrough plate (70) for each feedthrough pin (80). Each pin bore (78) has a pin bore (78) size greater than the feedthrough pin (80) size, preferably by an amount no greater than that required to permit the penetration of a brazing metal (88) between the pin bore (78) and the feedthrough pin (80). Each feedthrough pin (80) is inserted …

Commuting Self-Adjoint Extensions Of Symmetric Operators Defined From The Partial Derivatives, Palle Jorgensen, Steen Pedersen

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We consider the problem of finding commuting self-adjoint extensions of the partial derivatives {(1/i)(∂/∂xj):j=1,...,d} with domain C∞c(Ω) where the self-adjointness is defined relative to L2(Ω), and Ω is a given open subset of Rd.

Computer-Based Methods For Constructing Two-Level Fractional-Factorial Experimental Designs With A Requirement Set, Steven L. Forsythe Dec 2000

Computer-Based Methods For Constructing Two-Level Fractional-Factorial Experimental Designs With A Requirement Set, Steven L. Forsythe

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation developed four methodologies for computer-aided experimental design of two-level fractional factorial designs with requirement sets (DOE/RS). The requirement sets identify all the experimental factors and the appropriate interaction terms to be evaluated in the experiment. Taguchi graphs and similar manual methods provide techniques for solving the DOE/RS problem. Unfortunately, these methods are limited because they become difficult to use as the number of factors or interaction terms exceeds ten. This research showed that the DOE/RS problem belongs to a class of difficult-to-solve problems known as NP-Complete. It is the combinatorial nature of NP-Complete problems that causes them to …

The Expected Wet Period Of Finite Dam With Exponential Inputs, Eui Yong Lee, Kimberly Kinateder Nov 2000

The Expected Wet Period Of Finite Dam With Exponential Inputs, Eui Yong Lee, Kimberly Kinateder

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We use martingale methods to obtain an explicit formula for the expected wet period of the finite dam of capacity V, where the amounts of inputs are i.i.d exponential random variables and the output rate is one, when the reservoir is not empty. As a consequence, we obtain an explicit formula for the expected hitting time of either 0 or V and a new expression for the distribution of the number of overflows during the wet period, both without the use of complex analysis.

A Class Of Semiparametric Scale-Change Hazards Regression Models And Its Adequacy For Censored Survival Data, Ying Qing Chen Oct 2000

A Class Of Semiparametric Scale-Change Hazards Regression Models And Its Adequacy For Censored Survival Data, Ying Qing Chen

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

A class of semiparametric hazards regression models called the accelerated hazards models was introduced to identify the covariate effect characterized by the scale-change between hazard functions. In this article, we compare the accelerated hazards models with several other popular classes of regression models in statistical literature for censored survival data. We also propose and study some test statistics to assess the models' adequacy. Simulation studies are conducted to evaluate the performance of the test statistics. Actual clinical trials data are analyzed to demonstrate the proposed models and test statistics.

Stochastic Hybrid Control, A. Bensoussan, J. L. Menaldi Sep 2000

Stochastic Hybrid Control, A. Bensoussan, J. L. Menaldi

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

The objective of this paper is to study the stochastic version of a previous paper of the authors, in which hybrid control for deterministic systems was considered. The modelling is quite similar to the deterministic case. We have a system whose state is composed of a continuous part and a discrete part. They are affected by a continuous type control and an impulse control. The dynamics is moreover perturbed by noise, also a continuous and a discrete noise process. The Markovian character of the state process is preserved. We develop the model and show how the dynamic programming approach leads …

A Nonlinear Parabolic Equation Modelling Surfactant Diffusion, Xinfu Chen, Chaocheng Huang, Jennifer Zhao Sep 2000

A Nonlinear Parabolic Equation Modelling Surfactant Diffusion, Xinfu Chen, Chaocheng Huang, Jennifer Zhao

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

An initial-boundary value problem for nonlinear parabolic equations modelling surfactant diffusions is investigated. The boundary conditions are of nonlinear adsorptive types, and the initial value has a single point jump. We study the well-posedness of the problem, the convergence of a numerical scheme, and the regularity as well as quantitative behaviour of solutions.

Fluid Flow In Micro-Channels: A Stochastic Approach, Hilda Marino Black Jul 2000

Fluid Flow In Micro-Channels: A Stochastic Approach, Hilda Marino Black

Doctoral Dissertations

In this study free molecular flow in a micro-channel was modeled using a stochastic approach, namely the Kolmogorov forward equation in three dimensions. Model equations were discretized using Central Difference and Backward Difference methods and solved using the Jacobi method. Parameters were used that reflect the characteristic geometry of experimental work performed at the Louisiana Tech University Institute for Micromanufacturing.

The solution to the model equations provided the probability density function of the distance traveled by a particle in the micro-channel. From this distribution we obtained the distribution of the residence time of a particle in the micro-channel. Knowledge of …

Simpson's Paradox Can Emerge From The N-Player Prisoner's Dilemma: Implications For The Evolution Of Altruistic Behavior, Jeffrey Alan Fletcher, Martin Zwick Jul 2000

Simpson's Paradox Can Emerge From The N-Player Prisoner's Dilemma: Implications For The Evolution Of Altruistic Behavior, Jeffrey Alan Fletcher, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Simulations of the n-player Prisoner’s Dilemma in multiple populations reveal that Simpson’s paradox can emerge in such game-theoretic situations. The relative proportion of cooperators can decrease in each separate sub-population, while the proportion of cooperators in the total population can nonetheless increase, at least transiently. Factors that determine the longevity of this effect are under investigation. The increase of altruistic behavior exhibited in these simulations is not based on reciprocal altruism, as there are no strategies conditional on other players’ past actions, nor does it depend on kin selection via inclusive fitness, as there are no genes. This model is …

Openness Of Induced Projections, J. J. Charatonik, W. J. Charatonik, Alejandro Illanes

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

For continua X and Y it is shown that if the projection f : X x Y ->X has its induced mapping C(f) open, then X is C*-smooth. As a corollary, a characterization of dendrites in these terms is obtained.

An Extension Of Euclidean Distance Matrix Analysis Applied To Craniofacial Growth Prediction, Mark K. Batesole Jun 2000

An Extension Of Euclidean Distance Matrix Analysis Applied To Craniofacial Growth Prediction, Mark K. Batesole

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study is [sic] introduces a new extension of Euclidean Distance Matrix Analysis (EDMA) as applied to growth prediction analysis. Using EDMA eliminates the presupposition of a set growth pattern, which is introduced by traditional superimposition techniques. When EDMA is extended to analyze prediction methodologies, using a non-age-matched growth sample, some shortcomings become evident. These involve bootstrapping techniques, relative difference in growth, and absence of clinical, real world measure. To overcome these issues, a statistical approach using the Wilcoxen signed rank test, absolute difference in growth, and a new method to evaluate the error in a prediction methodology's landmark identification …

Permitting Jury Discussions During Trial: Impact Of The Arizona Reform, Paula Hannaford-Agor, Valerie P. Hans, G. Thomas Munsterman Jun 2000

Permitting Jury Discussions During Trial: Impact Of The Arizona Reform, Paula Hannaford-Agor, Valerie P. Hans, G. Thomas Munsterman

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

A field experiment tested the effect of an Arizona civil jury reform that allows jurors to discuss evidence among themselves during the trial. Judges, jurors, attorneys, and litigants completed questionnaires in trials randomly assigned to either a Trial Discussions condition, in which jurors were permitted to discuss the evidence during trial, or a No Discussions condition, in which jurors were prohibited from discussing evidence during trial according to traditional admonitions. Judicial agreement with jury verdicts did not differ between conditions. Permitting jurors to discuss the evidence did affect the degree of certainty that jurors reported about their preferences at the …

Empirical Methods And The Law, Theodore Eisenberg Jun 2000

Empirical Methods And The Law, Theodore Eisenberg

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

One can divide empirical analysis of legal issues into three major branches: (1) the use of scientific empirical analysis by litigants to attempt to prevail in individual cases, (2) the use of social scientific empirical analysis in individual cases, and (3) the use of the empirical methods to describe the legal system’s operation. The first two uses present difficulties that reflect a fundamental limitation on using statistical methods in law: the difference between establishing statistical association and establishing actual causation in an individual case filtered through our adversary legal system. The third use encounters no such obstacle and can aid …

Some Applications Of The Ultrapower Theorem To The Theory Of Compacta, Paul Bankston Jun 2000

Some Applications Of The Ultrapower Theorem To The Theory Of Compacta, Paul Bankston

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

The ultrapower theorem of Keisler and Shelah allows such model-theoretic notions as elementary equivalence, elementary embedding and existential embedding to be couched in the language of categories (limits, morphism diagrams). This in turn allows analogs of these (and related) notions to be transported into unusual settings, chiefly those of Banach spaces and of compacta. Our interest here is the enrichment of the theory of compacta, especially the theory of continua, brought about by the importation of model-theoretic ideas and techniques.

An Investigation Into Relationships Between Alternative Assessment And Pre-Service Elementary Teachers’ Beliefs About Mathematics, David Charles Coffey Jun 2000

An Investigation Into Relationships Between Alternative Assessment And Pre-Service Elementary Teachers’ Beliefs About Mathematics, David Charles Coffey

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine how including alternative assessments in a reform-based mathematics course affects pre-service teachers’ mathematical beliefs. A single section of a mathematics course designed for elementary education majors that employed three different alternative assessments was the setting for the study.

A pre- and post-belief survey completed by students enrolled in the section under study represented the first level of data collection and analysis. The results of the pre-belief survey guided the selection of seven informants from the section and provided belief statements for the informants to verify during subsequent interviews. Based on the data …

Taking Animal Welfare Seriously: Minimizing Pain And Distress In Research Animals, The Humane Society Of The United States

ANIMAL RESEARCH

Pain and distress caused by specific research models and techniques raise serious concerns for those in the animal welfare community as well as in the scientific community. Yet good estimates of how much animal pain and/or animal distress is caused by particular techniques or methods are not yet available. The HSUS has compiled a preliminary list of research models and techniques that cause pain and distress. Analyses by the USDA and HSUS indicate that the majority of the animals reported in Column E are used in various testing procedures, with vaccine testing prominent among them. More data are needed to …

Cramer-Rao Bound And Optimal Amplitude Estimator Of Superimposed Sinusoidal Signals With Unknown Frequencies, Shaohui Jia Apr 2000

Cramer-Rao Bound And Optimal Amplitude Estimator Of Superimposed Sinusoidal Signals With Unknown Frequencies, Shaohui Jia

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation addresses optimally estimating the amplitudes of superimposed sinusoidal signals with unknown frequencies. The Cramer-Rao Bound of estimating the amplitudes in white Gaussian noise is given, and the maximum likelihood estimator of the amplitudes in this case is shown to be asymptotically efficient at high signal to noise ratio but finite sample size. Applying the theoretical results to signal resolutions, it is shown that the optimal resolution of multiple signals using a finite sample is given by the maximum likelihood estimator of the amplitudes of signals.

The Timing Of Opinion Formation By Jurors In Civil Cases: An Empirical Examination, Paula Hannaford-Agor, Valerie P. Hans, Nicole L. Mott, G. Thomas Munsterman Apr 2000

The Timing Of Opinion Formation By Jurors In Civil Cases: An Empirical Examination, Paula Hannaford-Agor, Valerie P. Hans, Nicole L. Mott, G. Thomas Munsterman

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

The question of when and how jurors form opinions about evidence presented at trial has been the focus of seemingly endless speculation. For lawyers, the question is how to capture the attention and approval of the jury at the earliest possible point in the trial. Their goal is to maximize the persuasiveness of their arguments--or at least to minimize the persuasiveness of those of the opposing side. Judges, in contrast, are more concerned about prejudgment. They regularly admonish jurors to suspend judgment until after all the evidence has been presented and after the jurors have been instructed on the law. …

The Emotional Economy Of Capital Sentencing, Stephen P. Garvey Apr 2000

The Emotional Economy Of Capital Sentencing, Stephen P. Garvey

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

You often hear that one reason capital jurors condemn capital defendants is that jurors don't empathize with defendants. And one reason they don't empathize is that the process of capital sentencing is rigged against empathy. Using data from the South Carolina segment of the Capital Jury Project, I try to examine the role emotion plays in capital sentencing.

Without entering here all the important and necessary caveats, I find that the self-reported emotional responses jurors have toward capital defendants run the gamut from sympathy and pity at one extreme, to disgust, anger, and fear at the other. What causes these …

Dendrites And Light Open Mappings, J. J. Charatonik, W. J. Charatonik, Pawel Krupski

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

It is shown that a metric continuum X is a dendrite if and only if for every compact space Y and for every light open mapping f : Y ->f(Y ) such that X c f(Y ) there is a copy X1 of X in Y for which the restriction fjX1 : X1 ->X is a homeomorphism. Another characterization of dendrites in terms of continuous selections of multivalued functions is also obtained.
