Benchmarks And Controls For Optimization With Quantum Annealing, Erica Kelley Grant
Doctoral Dissertations
Quantum annealing (QA) is a metaheuristic specialized for solving optimization problems which uses principles of adiabatic quantum computing, namely the adiabatic theorem. Some devices implement QA using quantum mechanical phenomena. These QA devices do not perfectly adhere to the adiabatic theorem because they are subject to thermal and magnetic noise. Thus, QA devices return statistical solutions with some probability of success where this probability is affected by the level of noise of the system. As these devices improve, it is believed that they will become less noisy and more accurate. However, some tuning strategies may further improve that probability of …
An Update On The Computational Theory Of Hamiltonian Period Functions, Bradley Joseph Klee
An Update On The Computational Theory Of Hamiltonian Period Functions, Bradley Joseph Klee
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Lately, state-of-the-art calculation in both physics and mathematics has expanded to include the field of symbolic computing. The technical content of this dissertation centers on a few Creative Telescoping algorithms of our own design (Mathematica implementations are given as a supplement). These algorithms automate analysis of integral period functions at a level of difficulty and detail far beyond what is possible using only pencil and paper (unless, perhaps, you happen to have savant-level mental acuity). We can then optimize analysis in classical physics by using the algorithms to calculate Hamiltonian period functions as solutions to ordinary differential equations. The simple …
Nuclear-Targeted Gold Nanoparticles Enhance The Effects Of Radiation Therapy With And Without Liposomal Delivery, Maureen Aliru
Nuclear-Targeted Gold Nanoparticles Enhance The Effects Of Radiation Therapy With And Without Liposomal Delivery, Maureen Aliru
Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)
Less that 10% of pancreatic cancer patients are eligible for curative resection, and clinical trials evaluating chemoradiation in locally advanced patients with unresectable disease have been largely disappointing. New and creative therapeutic approaches are needed to address the unment need for treatment options. The objective of this thesis is to advance radiosensitization of treatment-resistant densely desmoplastic pancreatic cancer using nanoparticles to surmount biological barriers to effective particle distribution for DNA-targeting.
Clinical translation of radiosensitizing nanoparticles has stalled owing to technical challenges. Current strategies to use AuNPs for radiosensitization require large quantities of gold, kilovoltage x-rays, immediate irradiation after intravenous administration, …
Exploring Information For Quantum Machine Learning Models, Michael Telahun
Exploring Information For Quantum Machine Learning Models, Michael Telahun
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Quantum computing performs calculations by using physical phenomena and quantum mechanics principles to solve problems. This form of computation theoretically has been shown to provide speed ups to some problems of modern-day processing. With much anticipation the utilization of quantum phenomena in the field of Machine Learning has become apparent. The work here develops models from two software frameworks: TensorFlow Quantum (TFQ) and PennyLane for machine learning purposes. Both developed models utilize an information encoding technique amplitude encoding for preparation of states in a quantum learning model. This thesis explores both the capacity for amplitude encoding to provide enriched state …

Optical Properties Of Ultrathin In(Ga)As/Gaas And In(Ga)N/Gan Quantum Wells, Yurii Maidaniuk
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Recently, structures based on ultrathin quantum wells (QWs) began to play a critical role in modern devices, such as lasers, solar cells, infrared photodetectors, and light-emitting diodes. However, due to the lack of understanding of the formation mechanism of ultrathin QWs during the capping process, scientists and engineers cannot fully explore the potential of such structures. This study aims to investigate how structural parameters of ultrathin QWs affect their emission properties by conducting a systematic analysis of the optical properties of In(Ga)As/GaAs and In(Ga)N/GaN ultrathin QWs. Specifically, the analysis involved photoluminescence measurements combined with effective bandgap simulation, x-ray diffraction, and …
Kinetic Monte Carlo Investigations Involving Atomic Layer Deposition Of Metal-Oxide Thinfilms, David Tyler Magness
Kinetic Monte Carlo Investigations Involving Atomic Layer Deposition Of Metal-Oxide Thinfilms, David Tyler Magness
MSU Graduate Theses
Atomic Layer Deposition is a method of manufacturing thin film materials. Metal-oxides such as zinc-oxide and aluminum-oxide are particularly interesting candidates for use in microelectronic devices such as tunnel junction barriers, transistors, Schottky diodes, and more. By adopting a 3D Kinetic Monte Carlo model capable of simulating ZnO deposition, the effect of parameters including deposition temperature, chamber pressure, and composition of the initial substrate at the beginning of deposition can be investigated. This code generates two random numbers: One is used to select a chemical reaction to occur from a list of all possible reactions and the second is used …
Radial Basis Densities And The Density Functional-Based Atom-In-Molecule: Designing Charge-Transfer Potentials, Godwin Amo-Kwao
Radial Basis Densities And The Density Functional-Based Atom-In-Molecule: Designing Charge-Transfer Potentials, Godwin Amo-Kwao
Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs
Classical potentials that are capable of describing charge transfer and charge polarization in complex systems are of central importance for classical atomistic simulation of biomolecules and materials. Current potentials—regardless of the system—do not generalize well, and, with the exception of highly-specialized empirical potentials tuned for specific systems, cannot describe chemical bond formation and breaking. The charge-transfer embedded atom method (CT-EAM), a formal, DFT-based extension to the original EAM for metals, has been developed to address these issues by modeling charge distortion and charge transfer in interacting systems using pseudoatom building blocks instead of the electron densities of isolated atoms. CT-EAM …

Emulating Condensed Matter Systems In Classical Wave Metamaterials, Matthew Weiner
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
One of the best tools we have for the edification of physics is the analogy. When we take our classical set of states and dynamical variables in phase space and treat them as vectors and Hermitian operators respectively in Hilbert space through the canonical quantization, we lose out on a lot of the intuition developed with the previous classical physics. With classical physics, through our own experiences and understanding of how systems should behave, we create easy-to-understand analogies: we compare the Bohr model of the atom to the motion of the planets, we compare electrical circuits to the flow of …
Qwasi: The Quantum Walk Simulator, Warren V. Wilson
Qwasi: The Quantum Walk Simulator, Warren V. Wilson
Theses and Dissertations
As quantum computing continues to evolve, the ability to design and analyze novel quantum algorithms becomes a necessary focus for research. In many instances, the virtues of quantum algorithms only become evident when compared to their classical counterparts, so a study of the former often begins with a consideration of the latter. This is very much the case with quantum walk algorithms, as the success of random walks and their many, varied applications have inspired much interest in quantum correlates. Unfortunately, finding purely algebraic solutions for quantum walks is an elusive endeavor. At best, and when solvable, they require simple …
Quantum Random Walk Search And Grover's Algorithm - An Introduction And Neutral-Atom Approach, Anna Maria Houk
Quantum Random Walk Search And Grover's Algorithm - An Introduction And Neutral-Atom Approach, Anna Maria Houk
Physics
In the sub-field of quantum algorithms, physicists and computer scientist take classical computing algorithms and principles and see if there is a more efficient or faster approach implementable on a quantum computer, i.e. a ”quantum advantage”. We take random walks, a widely applicable group of classical algorithms, and move them into the quantum computing paradigm. Additionally, an introduction to a popular quantum search algorithm called Grover’s search is included to guide the reader to the development of a quantum search algorithm using quantum random walks. To close the gap between algorithm and hardware, we will look at using neutral-atom (also …

In this dissertation, I will argue that we can study functional fluctuations in unintegrated gluon distributions, in the MV model as well as JIMWLK, using reweighting techniques, which will allow me to calculate QCD observables with "biased ensembles". This technique will enable me to study rare functional configurations of the gluon distributions, that might have been selected for in, for example, the centrality criteria used by the ATLAS and ALICE collaborations. After a review of these techniques, as well as a review of QCD physics at high energy in general, I will use biased ensembles to compute observables in two …

At The Interface Of Algebra And Statistics, Tai-Danae Bradley
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis takes inspiration from quantum physics to investigate mathematical structure that lies at the interface of algebra and statistics. The starting point is a passage from classical probability theory to quantum probability theory. The quantum version of a probability distribution is a density operator, the quantum version of marginalizing is an operation called the partial trace, and the quantum version of a marginal probability distribution is a reduced density operator. Every joint probability distribution on a finite set can be modeled as a rank one density operator. By applying the partial trace, we obtain reduced density operators whose diagonals …
Generating Entanglement With The Dynamical Lamb Effect, Mirko Amico
Generating Entanglement With The Dynamical Lamb Effect, Mirko Amico
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
According to quantum field theory, the vacuum is filled with virtual particles which can be turned into real ones under the influence of external perturbations. Phenomena of this kind are commonly referred to as quantum vacuum phenomena. Several quantum vacuum phenomena related to the peculiar nature of the quantum vacuum have been predicted, some of which, such as the Lamb shift and the Casimir effect, have been experimentally found. Other examples of quantum vacuum phenomena include the Unruh effect, the dynamical Casimir effect and the dynamical Lamb effect. The dynamical Lamb effect was first predicted by considering the situation of …
Density Functional Theory Calculations Of Al Doped Hafnia For Different Crystal Symmetry Configurations, Joshua Steier
Density Functional Theory Calculations Of Al Doped Hafnia For Different Crystal Symmetry Configurations, Joshua Steier
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Dogan et al.[1], investigated the causes of ferroelectricity in doped hafnia using ab initio methods. Similarly, we investigated the stability of Al doped hafnia using quantum mechanical methods.
There are many different phases of Hafnia: monoclinic, tetragonal, cubic and orthorhombic. Starting with the monoclinic phase of Hafnia, Hafnia undergoes phase transitions which result in different space groups. The temperature at which the tetragonal phase is induced is 2000 K and cubic phase is induced at 2900 K[1]. Different dielectric constants vary from phase to phase. The average dielectric constants are highest for the cubic and tetragonal phases. In order to …
Measurement, Dissipation, And Quantum Control With Superconducting Circuits, Patrick Harrington
Measurement, Dissipation, And Quantum Control With Superconducting Circuits, Patrick Harrington
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The interaction between a superconducting circuit and its environment can cause decoherence. However, interactions with an environment are necessary for quantum state preparation and measurement. Through the dynamics of open quantum systems, the environment is a resource to control and readout superconducting circuit states. I present an experimental result demonstrating qubit state stabilization from engineered dissipation with a microwave photonic crystal. In addition, I discuss the statistical arrow of time in the dynamics of continuous quantum measurement. These results demonstrate an interplay between open quantum system dynamics and statistics, which highlights the role of both dissipation and measurement for quantum …
On Quantum Effects Of Vector Potentials And Generalizations Of Functional Analysis, Ismael L. Paiva
On Quantum Effects Of Vector Potentials And Generalizations Of Functional Analysis, Ismael L. Paiva
Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
This is a dissertation in two parts. In the first one, the Aharonov-Bohm effect is investigated. It is shown that solenoids (or flux lines) can be seen as barriers for quantum charges. In particular, a charge can be trapped in a sector of a long cavity by two flux lines. Also, grids of flux lines can approximate the force associated with continuous two-dimensional distributions of magnetic fields. More, if it is assumed that the lines can be as close to each other as desirable, it is explained how the classical magnetic force can emerge from the Aharonov-Bohm effect. Continuing, the …

A Study Of Optical Nonlinearities At The Single-Photon Level For Quantum Logic, Balakrishnan Viswanathan
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, we shall focus on theoretically studying quantum nonlinear optical schemes to construct a conditional phase gate at the single-photon level. With an aim to develop analytical models, we shall carry out a rigorous quantized multimode field analysis of some of these schemes involving only the interacting field operators. More specifically, we shall first study the three-wave mixing process involving two single-photons in a second-order nonlinear medium (x(2)) under two different cases viz. when the photons are traveling with equal velocities and when they are traveling with different velocities, and explore the possibility of using them for building …

On Characterizing Quantum Processes And Detectors, Kevin Valson Jacob
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In 2009, physicists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Colorado, Boulder developed what could arguable be called the first rudimentary quantum computer [1]. The past decade has seen unprecedented improvements in quantum information science culminating in the demonstration of quantum supremacy --- that quantum computers can solve problems that are impractical to be solved on the best supercomputers [2]. This remarkable progress necessitates the development of techniques to characterize the quantum devices that are being developed. In my thesis, I will focus on such devices that manipulate and detect light.
In Chapter 1, I will introduce the …

Limitations On Protecting Information Against Quantum Adversaries, Eneet Kaur
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The aim of this thesis is to understand the fundamental limitations on secret key distillation in various settings of quantum key distribution. We first consider quantum steering, which is a resource for one-sided device-independent quantum key distribution. We introduce a conditional mutual information based quantifier for quantum steering, which we call intrinsic steerability. Next, we consider quantum non-locality, which is a resource for device-independent quantum key distribution. In this context, we introduce a quantifier, intrinsic non-locality, which is a monotone in the resource theory of Bell non-locality. Both these quantities are inspired by intrinsic information and squashed entanglement and are …

Novel Photon-Detector Models For Enhanced Quantum Information Processing, Elisha Siddiqui
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This work is devoted to the development of novel photon-detector models at room temperature using quantum optics elements. This work comprises of two photon-number-resolving detector (PNRD) models, and the application of PNRD in LIDAR. The first model is based on using a two-mode squeezing device to resolve photon number at room temperature. In this model we study the average intensity-intensity correlations signal at the output of a two-mode squeezing device with |N> and |α> as the two input modes. We show that the input photon-number can be resolved from the average intensity-intensity correlations. In particular, we show jumps in the …

The extended Church-Turing thesis says that any computation that can be done by a physically realizable model of computers can be efficiently computed by the simplest model of classical computer, a Turing machine. Since the introduction of the concept of quantum computers, a central goal has been to find instances where the extended Church- Turing thesis fails. In the current noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices era, one looks for such instances that can be simulated on modest devices of small scale in the presence of noise. In this thesis, we work with one such problem, namely the Boson Sampling problem. We …
Solving Combinatorial Optimization Problems Using The Quantum Approximation Optimization Algorithm, Nicholas J. Guerrero
Solving Combinatorial Optimization Problems Using The Quantum Approximation Optimization Algorithm, Nicholas J. Guerrero
Theses and Dissertations
The Quantum Approximation Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) is one of the most promising applications for noisy intermediate-scale quantum machines due to the low number of qubits required as well as the relatively low gate count. Much work has been done on QAOA regarding algorithm implementation and development; less has been done checking how these algorithms actually perform on a real quantum computer. Using the IBM Q Network, several instances of combinatorial optimization problems (the max cut problem and dominating set problem) were implemented into QAOA and analyzed. It was found that only the smallest toy max cut algorithms performed adequately: those …

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Since graphene was isolated in 2004, the number of two-dimensional (2D) materials and their scientific relevance have grown exponentially. Besides graphene, one of the most important and technolocially promizing 2D materials that has emerged in recent years is hexagonal boron nitride, in its monolayer or multilayer form. In my thesis work, I used density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the properties of boron nitride films. In particular, I first studied the properties (i.e. formation energy, defect states, and structure) of point charged defects in monolayer and bilayer hexagonal boron nitride, and subsequently, I focused on the linear and nonlinear …

Computational Modeling Of Charge And Excitation Energy Transfer Dynamics In Complex Environments, Ning Chen
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis describes computational simulations of charge and exciton dynamics and quantum calculations of organic conjugated oligomers. A comprehensive computational study of charge hopping dynamics was conducted for a model of disordered chain of sites coupled to quantum environments. Time-dependent mean square displacement, diffusion constant, and mobility were calculated by three different computational methods for solving the master equation, which validate the accuracy of calculations. Approximate rate kernels were also tested to understand the effects of approximations in representing quantum environments. In addition to the effects of temperature and disorder, different values of the gradient in the site energy were …
Duality In A Model Of Layered Superfluids And Sliding Phases, Steven Vayl
Duality In A Model Of Layered Superfluids And Sliding Phases, Steven Vayl
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The intent of my project is to determine if the proposal of sliding phases in XY layered systems has physical ground. It will be done by comparing numerical and analytical results for a layered XY models. Sliding phases were first proposed in the context of DNA complexes and then extended to XY models, 1D coupled wires and superfluid films. The existence of the sliding phase would mean that there is a phase transition from 3D to 2D behavior. Such systems have been studied both in the clean case and with disorder. The idea of the sliding phases is based on …

Resource Efficient Design Of Quantum Circuits For Cryptanalysis And Scientific Computing Applications, Edgard Munoz-Coreas
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Quantum computers offer the potential to extend our abilities to tackle computational problems in fields such as number theory, encryption, search and scientific computation. Up to a superpolynomial speedup has been reported for quantum algorithms in these areas. Motivated by the promise of faster computations, the development of quantum machines has caught the attention of both academics and industry researchers. Quantum machines are now at sizes where implementations of quantum algorithms or their components are now becoming possible. In order to implement quantum algorithms on quantum machines, resource efficient circuits and functional blocks must be designed. In this work, we …

Luminescence Emission In A Nanocrystal Doped By A Transition Metal Impurity, George Chappell Jr.
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
In this thesis we consider the structure of magnetic ion centers with 3d-electrons in quantum dots under the effects of Coulomb and exchange interaction between the 3d-electrons of the impurity centers and the confined electrons (or holes) existing inside the nanocrystals. In particular, we are interested how this interaction changes the photoluminescence properties of those materials. We will make use of representation theory and the symmetry of the crystal structure to find the orthonormal wave functions that make up the wave functions of the outer, 3d-electrons inside our dot. The Coulomb and exchange interaction …

Senior Projects Spring 2020
Quantum entanglement, a phenomenon in which the behavior of one particle is somehow immediately correlated with and informed by what is happening to a partner particle a long distance away, has been a pivotal part of the formulation of quantum theory as we know it today and is currently generating many promising avenues of research. As such, finding ways to reliably and inexpensively generate systems of entangled particles for research purposes has become crucial. For my project, I attempt to set up a system that generates energy- and polarization-entangled photons via a technique called spontaneous parametric down conversion. This method …
