Holographic optical elements (HOEs) have the potential to enable more compact, versatile, and lightweight optical designs, but many challenges remain. Volume HOEs have the advantage of high diffraction efficiency, but they present both chromatic selectivity and chromatic dispersion, which impact their use with wide spectrum light sources. Single-color light emitting diode (LED) sources have a narrow spectrum that reduces these issues and this makes them better suited for use with volume HOEs. However, the LED source size must be taken into consideration for compact volume HOE-LED systems. To investigate the design limits for compact HOE-LED systems, a theoretical and experimental …

A theoretical model has previously been developed to calculate the holographic recording beam angles required in air (at any recording wavelength) to produce a Volume Holographic Optical Element (VHOE) for operation as a coupler for different input and output angles. In this paper, the experimental study is extended to further validate the VHOE coupler design and fabrication approach for additional incident beam angles, comparing -40° -45° and -50° (in air). The output angle for each VHOE is +45° within the medium and the coupler operational wavelength is 633nm. Holographic recording in Bayfol HX 200 photopolymer at 532nm is used to …

Out-Of-Plane Vibration Analysis With A Transmission Holographic Optical Element Based Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometer, Viswanath Bavigadda, Vincent Toal, Raghavendra Jallapuram, Emilia Mihaylova

Conference Papers

A simple electronic speckle pattern interferometer (ESPI) using a transmission holographic optical element (THOE) is presented. The THOE is designed to create a speckled reference beam in the interferometer. It is a transmission hologram of a diffusely transmitting glass plate A specific requirement for the fabrication of the THOEs is for them to be recorded at one wavelength at which the recording material is photosensitive and reconstructed using a near infrared laser diode which can be current modulated for phase shifting purposes. A partially reflective glass plate provides illumination of the object along the normal to its surface, ensuring that …

Hoe-Based Espi Systems, Emilia Mihaylova, Viswanath Bavigadda, Raghavendra Jallapuram, Vincent Toal

Conference Papers

Electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI) is a full-field measurement technique, capable of displaying vibrational mode shapes. Two electronic speckle pattern interferometers using reflection holographic optical elements (RHOEs) are presented. In the first ESPI system the RHOE is designed to create the speckled reference beam. A partially reflective glass plate provides illumination of the object along the normal to its surface, ensuring that the system is sensitive only to out-of-plane displacement of the object. It is demonstrated that the HOE-based system can be used for vibration measurements. Phase shifting can be implemented for fringe analysis. In the second ESPI system a …

Comparison Of Three Electronic Speckle Pattern Shearing Interferometers Using Photopolymer Holographic Optical Elements., Emilia Mihaylova, Izabela Naydenova, Vincent Toal, Suzanne Martin

Conference Papers

Three electronic speckle pattern shearing interferometers (ESPSI) using photopolymer holographic gratings to produce the sheared image are presented. In the first ESPSI system two holographic gratings are used. The gratings are placed between the object and an imaging lens in front of the CCD camera. In the second ESPSI system one grating is used in combination with a sheet of ground glass. The sheared images on the ground glass are further imaged onto a CCD camera. In the third ESPSI system only one grating is used - it is placed in front of the object. The image and the sheared …

Simple Electronic Speckle Pattern Shearing Interferometer With A Holographic Grating As A Shearing Element, Emilia Mihaylova, Izabela Naydenova, Suzanne Martin, Vincent Toal

Conference Papers

An optical set-up for electronic speckle pattern shearing interferometry (ESPSI) using a photopolymer diffractive optical element as a shearing element, is presented. A laser beam illuminates the object at an angle to the normal to the object surface. The holographic diffraction grating is placed in front of the object. The zero and the first order of diffraction form the image and the sheared image of the object. The images are imaged onto the CCD camera, whose optical axis coincides with the normal to the object surface. The field of view is limited only by the dimensions of the photopolymer plate. …

A Compact Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry System Using A Photopolymer Reflection Holographic Optical Element, Guntaka Tulasi Sridhar Reddy, Raghavendra Jallapuram, Vincent Toal, Izabela Naydenova, Suzanne Martin, Svetlana Mintova

Conference Papers

A simple and compact electronic speckle pattern interferometry system using a reflection holographic optical element is presented. The reflection holographic optical element is recorded on an acrylamide based photopolymer formulated and prepared at the Centre for Industrial & Engineering Optics. Light intensity of 40mW/cm2 with an exposure time of 60 seconds was used in fabricating the holographic optical element. The vibration mode patterns of a 4 cm diameter thin circular sheet of brass metal attached to a 4 cm diameter paper cone loud speaker are presented.
