Li+ Ion Transport In Select Lithium-Rich Antiperovskites, John William Howard
Li+ Ion Transport In Select Lithium-Rich Antiperovskites, John William Howard
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Lithium-Rich Antiperovskites (LiRAPs) have been shown to possess relatively high ionic conductivity at room temperature, and become superionic conductors at elevated temperatures. These materials generally have a stoichiometry Li3BX, where B is a doubly deficient anion, and X is a monovalent anion. Ideally they belong to the high symmetry space group Pm-3m where lithium atoms occupy octahedral corners, B anions occupy octahedral centers, and X anions occupy the interstitial centers between the octahedra. LiRAPs were synthesized using several different methods and characterized by XRD, EIS, DSC, TGA, FTIR, and INS techniques. Chemical analyses were performed to determine the stoichiometries of …
Mitigation Of Moving Shocks In An Expanding Duct, Veraun Chipman
Mitigation Of Moving Shocks In An Expanding Duct, Veraun Chipman
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Inviscid flow theory governs the bulk motion of a gas at some distance away from the walls (i.e. outside the boundary layer). That is to say, there are no viscous forces in the bulk flow, which is modeled using the Euler equations. The Euler equations are simply the Navier-Stokes equations with zero viscosity terms. An ideal inviscid fluid, when brought into contact with a surface or wall, would naturally slip right past it since the fluid has no viscosity. In real life, however, a thin boundary layer forms between the wall or surface and the bulk flow. Shock wave boundary …
Gate Monte Carlo Simulations In A Cloud Computing Environment, Blake Austin Rowedder
Gate Monte Carlo Simulations In A Cloud Computing Environment, Blake Austin Rowedder
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The GEANT4-based GATE is a unique and powerful Monte Carlo (MC) platform, which provides a single code library allowing the simulation of specific medical physics applications, e.g. PET, SPECT, CT, radiotherapy, and hadron therapy. However, this rigorous yet flexible platform is used only sparingly in the clinic due to its lengthy calculation time. By accessing the powerful computational resources of a cloud computing environment, GATE's runtime can be significantly reduced to clinically feasible levels without the sizable investment of a local high performance cluster. This study investigated a reliable and efficient execution of GATE MC simulations using a commercial cloud …
A Physically-Based Type Ii Supernova Feedback Model In Sph Simulations, Keita Todoroki
A Physically-Based Type Ii Supernova Feedback Model In Sph Simulations, Keita Todoroki
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
We implement and test a core-collapse Type II SN feedback that is physically motivated and produces good agreement with observations in galaxy formation simulations. The model includes both kinetic and thermal feedback, allowing wind particles to receive a velocity kick that mimics galactic winds and distributes mass and metallicity to the interstellar and intergalactic medium. We also include a phenomenological stellar feedback to study a possible enhancement of the efficiency of the SN-II feedback by creating lower-density ambient gas medium of the stellar populations by distribution of thermal energy. Our SN-II model is unique in the sense that it computes …
Time Correlated Measurements Using Plastic Scintillators With Neutron-Photon Pulse Shape Discrimination, Norman Edison Richardson
Time Correlated Measurements Using Plastic Scintillators With Neutron-Photon Pulse Shape Discrimination, Norman Edison Richardson
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Since the beginning of the nuclear age, there has been a strong demand for the development of efficient technologies for the detection of ionizing radiation. According to the United States' Department of Energy, the accurate assessment of fissile materials is essential in achieving the nonproliferation goals of enhancing safety and security of nuclear fuel cycle and nuclear energy facilities [1]. Nuclear materials can be characterized by the measurement of prompt and delayed neutrons and gamma rays emitted in spontaneous or induced fission reactions [2] and neutrons emitted in fission reactions are the distinctive signatures of nuclear materials. Today, the most …
Physics Of Gamma-Ray Bursts And Multi-Messenger Signals From Double Neutron Star Mergers, He Gao
Physics Of Gamma-Ray Bursts And Multi-Messenger Signals From Double Neutron Star Mergers, He Gao
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
My dissertation includes two parts:
Physics of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs): Gamma-ray bursts are multi-wavelength transients, with both prompt gamma-ray emission and late time afterglow emission observed by telescopes in different wavelengths. I have carried out three investigations to understand GRB prompt emission and afterglow. Chapter 2 develops a new method, namely, "Stepwise Filter Correlation" method, to decompose the variability components in a light curve. After proving its reliability through simulations, we apply this method to 266 bright GRBs and find that the majority of the bursts have clear evidence of superposition of fast and slow variability components. Chapter 3 gives …
