The polarized cross-section ratio σLT′/σ0 from hard exclusive πΔ++ electroproduction off an unpolarized hydrogen target has been extracted based on beam-spin asymmetry measurements using a 10.2  GeV/10.6  GeV incident electron beam and the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Lab. The study, which provides the first observation of this channel in the deep-inelastic regime, focuses on very forward-pion kinematics in the valence regime, and photon virtualities ranging from 1.5  GeV2 up to 7  GeV2. The reaction provides a novel access to the d-quark content of the nucleon and to p→Δ++ transition generalized parton …

The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab studies photoproduction of mesons using linearly polarized 8.5 GeV photons impinging on a hydrogen target which is contained within a detector with near-complete coverage for charged and neutral particles. We present measurements of spin-density matrix elements for the photoproduction of the vector meson ρ(770). The statistical precision achieved exceeds that of previous experiments for polarized photoproduction in this energy range by orders of magnitude. We confirm a high degree of s-channel helicity conservation at small squared four-momentum transfer t and are able to extract the t dependence of natural- and unnatural-parity exchange contributions to …

High precision measurements of the polarized electron beam-spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) from the proton have been performed using a 10.6 GeV incident electron beam and the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Lab. We report here a high precision multidimensional study of single π+ SIDIS data over a large kinematic range in Bjorken x, fractional energy, and transverse momentum of the hadron as well as photon virtualities Q2 ranging from 1–7  GeV2. In particular, the structure function ratio FsinϕLU/FUU has been determined, where FsinϕLU is a twist-3 …

B-Meson Ioffe-Time Distribution Amplitude At Short Distances, Shuai Zhao, Anatoly V. Radyushkin Jan 2021

B-Meson Ioffe-Time Distribution Amplitude At Short Distances, Shuai Zhao, Anatoly V. Radyushkin

Physics Faculty Publications

We propose the approach for a lattice investigation of light cone distribution amplitudes (LCDA) of heavy-light mesons, such as the B meson, using the formalism of parton pseudodistributions. A basic ingredient of the approach is the study of short-distance behavior of the B-meson Ioffe-time distribution amplitude (ITDA), which is a generalization of the B-meson LCDA in coordinate space. We construct a reduced ITDA for the B meson, and derive the matching relation between the reduced ITDA and the LCDA. The reduced ITDA is ultraviolet finite, which guarantees that the continuum limit exists on the lattice.

We report on the first measurement of the beam-spin asymmetry in the exclusive process of coherent deeply virtual Compton scattering off a nucleus. The experiment uses the 6 GeV electron beam from the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) accelerator at Jefferson Lab incident on a pressurized 4He gaseous target placed in front of the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). The scattered electron is detected by CLAS and the photon by a dedicated electromagnetic calorimeter at forward angles. To ensure the exclusivity of the process, a specially designed radial time projection chamber is used to detect the recoiling 4 …

We report the first longitudinal-transverse separation of the deeply virtual exclusive π0 electroproduction cross section off the neutron and coherent deuteron. The corresponding four structure functions dσL/dt, dσT/dt, dσLT/dt, and dσTT/dt are extracted as a function of the momentum transfer to the recoil system at Q2 = 1.75 GeV2 and xB = 0.36. The ed -> edπ0 cross sections are found compatible with the small values expected from theoretical models. The en -> enπ0 cross sections show a dominance from the response to transversely polarized …

Beam-target double-spin asymmetries and target single-spin asymmetries were measured for the exclusive π+ electroproduction reaction γp+. The results were obtained from scattering of 6-GeV longitudinally polarized electrons off longitudinally polarized protons using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory. The kinematic range covered is 1.1 < W < 3 GeV and 1 < Q2 < 6 GeV2. Results were obtained for about 6000 bins in W, Q2, cos(θ), and φ. Except at forward angles, very large target-spin asymmetries are observed over the entire W region. Reasonable agreement is found with phenomenological fits to previous …

Rosenbluth Separation Of The Πᵒ Electroproduction Cross Section, M. Defurne, M. Canan, C. E. Hyde, S. Koirala, M.N.H. Rashad, Jefferson Lab Hall A Collaboration

Physics Faculty Publications

We present deeply virtual πᵒ electroproduction cross-section measurements at xB = 0.36 and three different Q2 values ranging from 1.5 to 2 GeV2, obtained from Jefferson Lab Hall A experiment E07-007. The Rosenbluth technique is used to separate the longitudinal and transverse responses. Results demonstrate that the cross section is dominated by its transverse component and, thus, is far from the asymptotic limit predicted by perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Nonetheless, an indication of a nonzero longitudinal contribution is provided by the measured interference term σLT. Results are compared with several models based on the leading-twist approach of …

Issues And Opportunities In Exotic Hadrons, R.A. Briceño, T. D. Cohen, S. Coito, J. J. Dudek, E. Eichten, R. E. Mitchell

Physics Faculty Publications

The last few years have been witness to a proliferation of new results concerning heavy exotic hadrons. Experimentally, many new signals have been discovered that could be pointing towards the existence of tetraquarks, pentaquarks, and other exotic configurations of quarks and gluons. Theoretically, advances in lattice field theory techniques place us at the cusp of understanding complex coupled-channel phenomena, modelling grows more sophisticated, and effective field theories are being applied to an ever greater range of situations. It is thus an opportune time to evaluate the status of the field. In the following, a series of high priority experimental and …

Separated Response Functions In Exclusive, Forward Π± Electroproduction On Deuterium, G. M. Huber, H. P. Blok, A. Klein, L. M. Qin, K. Vansyoc, Jefferson Lab, Fπ Collaboration

Physics Faculty Publications

Background: Measurements of forward exclusive meson production at different squared four-momenta of the exchanged virtual photon, Q2, and at different four-momentum transfer, t, can be used to probe QCD's transition from meson-nucleon degrees of freedom at long distances to quark-gluon degrees of freedom at short scales. Ratios of separated response functions in π- and π+ electroproduction are particularly informative. The ratio for transverse photons may allow this transition to be more easily observed, while the ratio for longitudinal photons provides a crucial verification of the assumed pole dominance, needed for reliable extraction of the pion form …

Exclusive neutral-pion electroproduction (ep → e'p'π0 was measured at Jefferson Lab with a 5.75-GeV electron beam and the CLAS detector. Differential cross sections d4σ/dtdQ2dxBπ and structure functions σT+ ϵσL, σTT, and σLT as functions of t were obtained over a wide range of Q2 and xB. The data are compared with Regge and handbag theoretical calculations. Analyses in both frameworks find that a large dominance of transverse processes is necessary to explain the experimental results. For the Regge analysis it is found …

Experimental results on the Σ+(1189) hyperon transverse polarization in photoproduction on a hydrogen target using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory are presented. The Σ+(1189) was reconstructed in the exclusive reaction γ+p→K0S+Σ+(1189) via the Σ+→pπ0 decay mode. The K0S was reconstructed in the invariant mass of two oppositely charged pions with the π0 identified in the missing mass of the detected pπ+π final state. Experimental data were collected in the photon energy range Eγ=1.0 –3.5 GeV (√s range 1.66–2.73 GeV). We observe a large negative polarization …

Differential Cross Sections For The Reactions Γp→Pη And Γp→Pη', M. Williams, Gerard P. Gilfoyle, Et. Al.

Physics Faculty Publications

High-statistics differential cross sections for the reactions γp and γppη' have been measured using the CEBAF large acceptance spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Lab for center-of-mass energies from near threshold up to 2.84 GeV. The η' results are the most precise to date and provide the largest energy and angular coverage. The η measurements extend the energy range of the world’s large-angle results by approximately 300 MeV. These new data, in particular the η' measurements, are likely to help constrain the analyses being performed to search for new baryon resonance states.

The beam spin asymmetry (BSA) in the exclusive reaction ep→epπ0 was measured with the CEBAF 5.77 GeV polarized electron beam and Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). The xB,Q2,t , and ϕ dependences of the π0 BSA are presented in the deep inelastic regime. The asymmetries are fitted with a sinϕ function and their amplitudes are extracted. Overall, they are of the order of 0.04–0.11 and roughly independent of t . This is the signature of a nonzero longitudinal-transverse interference. The implications concerning the applicability of a formalism based on generalized parton distributions, as well as …

Differential cross sections for γp→ηp have been measured with tagged real photons for incident photon energies from 0.75 to 1.95 GeV. Mesons were identified by missing mass reconstruction using kinematical information for protons scattered in the production process. The data provide the first extensive angular distribution measurements for the process above W = 1.75  GeV. Comparison with preliminary results from a constituent quark model support the suggestion that a third S11 resonance with mass ∼1.8  GeV couples to the ηN channel.

The reaction epe′K+Λ(1520) with Λ(1520)→p′K was studied at electron beam energies of 4.05, 4.25, and 4.46 GeV, using the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The cos θK+, φK+, Q2, and W dependencies of Λ(1520) electroproduction are presented for the kinematic region 0.9 < Q2 < 2.4 GeV2 and 1.95 < W < 2.65 GeV. Also, the Q2 dependence of the Λ(1520) decay angular distribution is presented for the first time. The cosθK+ angular distributions suggest t-channel diagrams dominate the production process. Fits to the Λ(1520) t-channel helicity frame decay angular distributions indicate the m …

New cross sections for the reaction ep → ep η are reported for total center of mass energy W = 1.5-1.86 GeV and invariant momentum transfer Q2 = 0.25-1.5 (GeV/c)2. This large kinematic range allows extraction of important new information about response functions, photocouplings, and etaN coupling strengths of baryon resonances. Newly observed structure at W ~ 1.65 GeV is shown to come from interference between S and P waves and can be interpreted with known resonances. Improved values are derived for the photon coupling amplitude for the S11(1535) resonance.
