Self-Assembly Of Helical Ribbons, Yevgeniya V. Zastavker, Neer Asherie, Aleksey Lomakin, Jayanti Pande, Joanne M. Donovan, Joel M. Schnur, George B. Benedek

Yevgeniya V. Zastavker

The self-assembly of helical ribbons is examined in a variety of multicomponent enantiomerically pure systems that contain a bile salt or a nonionic detergent, a phosphatidylcholine or a fatty acid, and a steroid analog of cholesterol. In almost all systems, two different pitch types of helical ribbons are observed: high pitch, with a pitch angle of 54 ± 2°, and low pitch, with a pitch angle of 11 ± 2°. Although the majority of these helices are right-handed, a small proportion of left-handed helices is observed. Additionally, a third type of helical ribbon, with a pitch angle in the range …

Modeling Plasma Induced Dispersion In A Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation, Jeremy Gulley, William Dennis

Jeremy R. Gulley

Ultrafast laser pulse propagation in dielectrics is often modeled by a modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE). At laser intensities sufficient to cause ionization, a plasma term can be included in the modified NLSE to account for free-carrier optical effects. This term is linear in the field and may be calculated from the classical Drude theory. We explore the consequences of a newly developed method for including dispersion relations of the plasma term as predicted by the Drude theory into the framework of the modified NLSE. The plasma induced dispersion terms can be shown to strongly effect ultrashort pulse evolution through …

Summary form only given. We present a direct method to detect weak two-photon absorption (TPA) signals. As a proof of principle, we have measured the TPA cross section δ for rhodamine 6G (R6G) in methanol and obtained a value which agrees with other results. The technique may be very useful in biomedical imaging.

Fourier Series And Optical Transform Techniques In Contemporary Optics: An Introduction, Raymond Wilson, Sean Mccreary

Raymond Wilson

An extensively illustrated introduction to Fourier transform methods containing 280+ figures which demonstrate in 3-space the numerous basic functions of optical diffraction and imaging. Covers the mathematical terminology for wave phenomena with emphasis on spatial frequency terms. The relationship between Fraunhofer diffraction by two-dimensional functions, the Fourier transform in 3-space and use of the convolution theorem are among the subjects discussed.

Ionic Polishing Of Fused Silica And Glass, Raymond Wilson Dec 1969

Ionic Polishing Of Fused Silica And Glass, Raymond Wilson

Raymond Wilson

This paper reviews research in the erosion of fused silica and glass in an effort to gain a better understanding of the ionic polishing process as applied to optical materials. Erosion rates depend on ion mass, ion energy, target temperature, angle of incidence, and target material, and can also depend on vacuum pressure. The paper also considers other effects that accompany ionic bombardment of insulators, such as nature of the eroded surface, contaminate films, surface layer alterations, secondary electron emission, and gas trapping and release.
