Rapid Cryogenic Electrical Characterization Of Materials And Devices Using Gifford-Mcmahon Cryocoolers, Margaret Marte, Bernardo Langa Jr., Patrick Johnson, Deepak Sapkota, Kathryn Evancho, Bernadeta Srijanto, Dale Hensley, Kasra Sardashti

Thin-film heterostructures are necessary building blocks for superconducting and phononic quantum computing devices. Many new generations of quantum hardware demand extensive materials research to optimize performances at cryogenic temperatures (below 10 K). Here, we demonstrate compact cryogenic measurement systems capable of reaching sub-10K temperatures in less than three hours with the ability to measure AC/DC resistance and dielectric properties of thin-film materials. Our platform utilizes Gifford-McMahon (GM) cryocoolers as effective tools for providing high throughput cooling-warming cycles. We successfully used the GM-based measurement systems to measure 1) the superconducting transition temperature for Nb thin films (Tc ~7.8 K), and 2) …

A new dark sector antibaryon, denoted ψD, could be produced in decays of B mesons. This Letter presents a search for B+ψD+p (and the charge conjugate) decays in e+e annihilations at 10.58 GeV, using data collected in the BABAR experiment. Data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 398 fb−1 are analyzed. No evidence for a signal is observed. Branching fraction upper limits in the range from 10−7–10−5 are obtained at 90% confidence level for masses of 1.0<D< 4.3 GeV/c2. The result is also reinterpreted to provide …

A dedicated measurement of additional radiation in e+e → µ+µγ and e+eπ+πγ initial-state-radiation events is presented using the full BABAR data sample. For the first time results are presented at next-to- and next-to-next-to-leading order, with one and two additional photons, respectively, for radiation from the initial and final states. Comparison with predictions from PHOKHARA and AFKQED Monte Carlo generators is performed, revealing discrepancies in the one-photon rates and angular distributions for the former. Drawing from magnetic particle imaging principles, magnetic particle spectroscopy (MPS) serves as a valuable tool employing superparamagnetic iron-oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) in diverse applications ranging from medical imaging to biosensing and the comprehensive study of magnetic particles’ characteristics. MPS leverages the nonlinear response exhibited by SPIONs when a external magnetic field is applied, enabling a highly sensitive method for examining biological systems and more. The Majorana Demonstrator recently concluded its search for neutrinoless double beta decay using an array of up to 40.4kg of germanium detectors, 27kg of which were enriched in 76Ge and housed inside a copper and lead compact shield located at the 4850 foot level in a clean room in the Davis Campus of the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota. This search proceeded from June 26, 2015 until March 3, 2021 and 64.5 kg yr of enriched active exposure was acquired while achieving a world leading energy resolution of 0.12% FWHM at 2039 keV, one of …

We present a new technique, “tau polarimetry,” for measuring the longitudinal beam polarization present in an e+e collider through the analysis of e+e → τ+τ events. By exploiting the sensitivity of τ decay kinematics to the longitudinal polarization of the beams, we demonstrate that the longitudinal polarization can be measured with a 3 per mil systematic uncertainty at the interaction point using a technique that is independent of spin and beam transport modeling. Charged Current (CC) coherent neutrino-nucleus pion production is characterized by small momentum transferred to the nucleus, which is left in its ground state. Despite the relatively large uncertainties on the production cross-section, coherent production of mesons by neutrinos represents an important process, as it can shed light on the structure of the weak current and can also constitute a potential source of background for modern neutrino oscillation experiments and searches for Beyond Standard Model (BSM) physics. Improving and adding new experimental measurements of hyperon-nucleon (YN) and hyperon-deuteron (Yd) cross sections is an active area in nuclear physics research. Scientists use such cross-section data to understand the composition of neutron stars and develop a comprehensive picture of the baryon-baryon interaction. Using high luminosity photon beam incident on a long liquid deuterium target and the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab), a sample of hyperon-deuteron elastic scattering events was previously identified. A new mechanism has been proposed to simultaneously explain the presence of dark matter and the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. This scenario predicts exotic B-meson decays into a baryon and a dark-sector antibaryon (ψD) with branching fractions accessible at B factories. We present a search for B→ΛψD decays using data collected by the BABAR experiment at SLAC. This reaction is identified by fully reconstructing the accompanying B meson and requiring the presence of a single Λ baryon in the remaining particles. The MUon Scattering Experiment (MUSE) at the Paul Scherrer Institute seeks to measure the muon-proton and electron-proton elastic cross-sections in the same experiment by measuring the scattering angle of particles from a 115-160 MeV beam onto a liquid hydrogen target. The timing detectors, as well as several of other detectors in the experiment, are plastic scintillators. This document discusses a method for the energy calibration, using 208Tl, 22Na, and 88Y sources, signal attenuation, and hit-position reconstructions of various timing detectors, as well as their function in the experiment as a whole. The Majorana Demonstrator (MJD) is a shielded radiation detection system located a mile underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in South Dakota. The system aims to detect the theorized, rare process of neutrinoless double-beta decay. The Demonstrator utilizes an array of scintillating acrylic detectors to veto any signals induced by earth-penetrating cosmogenic muons and reach background levels necessary for the detection of neutrinoless double-beta decay. In 2007, detection of individual molecules with a solid-state gas sensor was reported for first time by Schedin et al. where they used micromechanically-cleaved graphene for their sensing material, which exhibits isotropic and homogeneous conduction [1]. However, despite the novelty and popularity of their work, it has never been repeated. Further, we found their associated calculations to be self-inconsistent by a factor of 103 . So, hoping to account for and resolve this discrepancy, we outline the plan we had to reproduce their experiment. The author reports in this dissertation on the application of a technique to use bolometer detector arrays, such as those of the CUORE experiment and its proposed upgrade CUPID, to search for 14.4 keV Solar axions arising from an M1 nuclear transition of thermally excited 57Fe in the Solar core. Density functional theory calculations performed using QU A N T U M ESPRESSO for Li2MoO4 enable the computation of a time-dependent axionto-photon conversion rate in the bolometer crystals. We report cross-section measurements of the final-state muon kinematics for νμ charged-current interactions in the NOvA near detector using an accumulated 8.09×1020 protons on target in the NuMI beam. We present the results as a double-differential cross section in the observed outgoing muon energy and angle, as well as single-differential cross sections in the derived neutrino energy, Eν, and square of the four-momentum transfer, Q2. We compare the results to inclusive cross-section predictions from various neutrino event generators via χ2 calculations using a covariance matrix that accounts for bin-to-bin correlations of systematic uncertainties. …

We report the results of a new global QCD analysis including deep-inelastic scattering data off 1H, 2H, 3H, and 3He targets. Nuclear corrections are treated in terms of a nuclear convolution approach with off-shell bound nucleons. The off-shell (OS) corrections responsible for the modification of the structure functions (SFs) of bound nucleons are constrained in a global fit along with the proton parton distribution functions (PDFs) and the higher-twist (HT) terms. This article presents a model-independent search for an additional, mostly sterile, heavy neutral lepton (HNL), that is capable of mixing with the Standard Model τ neutrino with a mixing strength of |Uτ4| 2, corresponding to the absolute square of the extended Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrix element. Data from the BABAR experiment, with a total integrated luminosity of 424 fb−1, are analyzed using a kinematic approach that makes no assumptions on the model behind the origins of the HNL, its lifetime or decay modes. We present a study of rare decay modes B+→D+Sh0, B+→D*+S h0, and B+→D+h0, where h0 denotes the neutral meson η or K0, using a data sample of (772±10)×106   BB̅ events produced at the Υ(4S) resonance. The data were collected by the Belle detector operating at the asymmetric-energy KEKB collider. We find no evidence for these decays, so we set upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the branching fractions of B+→D+ S h0, D*+ S h0, …

The inclusive electron neutrino charged-current cross section is measured in the NOvA near detector using 8.02×1020 protons-on-target in the NuMI beam. The sample of GeV electron neutrino interactions is the largest analyzed to date and is limited by ≃17% systematic rather than the ≃7.4% statistical uncertainties. The double-differential cross section in final-state electron energy and angle is presented for the first time, together with the single-differential dependence on Q2 (squared four-momentum transfer) and energy, in the range 1  GeV≤EνGENIE, GiBUU, NEUT, and NuWro neutrino event generators. We discuss a method to study free protons and neutrons using ν()-hydrogen (H) Charged Current (CC) inelastic interactions, together with various precision tests of the isospin (charge) symmetry using ν and CC interactions on both H and nuclear targets. Probing free nucleons with (anti)neutrinos provides information about their partonic structure, as well as a crucial input for the modeling of ν(⊽)-nucleus (A) interactions. Liquid argon time projection chamber detector technology provides high spatial and calorimetric resolutions on the charged particles traversing liquid argon. As a result, the technology has been used in a number of recent neutrino experiments, and is the technology of choice for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). Tau neutrinos are the least studied particle in the standard model. This whitepaper discusses the current and expected upcoming status of tau neutrino physics with attention to the broad experimental and theoretical landscape spanning long-baseline, beam-dump, collider, and astrophysical experiments. Resistance random access memory (ReRAM) cells are emerging passive components showing great promise for applications in non-volatile storage, in-memory computing, and neuromorphic circuits, to name a few. Various experimental ReRAM cells have demonstrated excellent characteristics. This includes nanoscale size, short read and write times, and small energy requirements needed to manipulate the information. The main obstacles preventing the widespread adoption of ReRAM technology are significant device-to-device and cycle-to-cycle variability.

Search For Triple-Proton Decay Using Machine Learning With Cuore, Douglas Adams

A framework to search for a triple-proton decay of 130Te in the CUORE detector against a background of muons is presented. We use machine learning to classify different kinds of energy depositing events. We use the classification information to improve our detection or non-detection limits of a triple-proton decay process. We derive and use a methodology of combining Poisson counting statistics with supervised classification machine learning tools. Additionally, a sensitivity calculation is provided which uses the classification counting likelihood. Using our analysis technique, we achieve an lower 2σ half-life bound of 7.43×1024yrs for triple-proton decay of …
