Amyloid Proteins And Fibrils Stability, Farbod Mahmoudinobar
Dissertations
Compared to globular proteins that have a stable native structure, intrinsically disordered peptides (IDP) sample an ensemble of structures without folding into a native conformation. One example of IDP is the amyloid-beta(Abeta) protein which is the main constituent of senile plaques in the brain of Alzheimer's patients.Understanding the process by which IDPs undergo structural changes to form oligomers that eventually aggregate into senile plaques/amyloid fibrils may significantly advance the development of novel therapeutic methods to treat neurodegenerative diseases, for which there is no cure to date. This dissertation has two main objectives. The first one is to investigate and identify structural …

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
Researches available in literature interrelating neural networks to civil engineering design problems, especially for beep beams, are very rare. Therefore, an optimization algorithm is developed and verified in this study and coded using MATLAB functions to determine the optimum cost design of reinforced concrete deep beams. ACI 318-14 code method is used benefiting from iterative particle swarm optimization technique due to its efficiency and reliability. Minimizing total cost is used as the objective function in terms of four decision variables. Self-adaptive penalty function technique is used to handle constraints for each of the 300 randomly selected particles, and in each …

With the improvement of the medical services frameworks rivalry, hospitals face more and more challenges. In the interim, allotment of resource has a crucial influence on performing competitive benefits in a hospitals. To choose the suitable beds number is one of the most essential tasks in hospital administration. Anyway, in true condition, bed allotment choice is a multiple-side problem with weakness and haphazardness of the information available. It is so sophisticated. Therefore, the research about bed allotment difficulty is comparatively rare under considering multiple departments, nursing hours, and stochastic information about arrival and service of patients. In this paper, we …

Evaluation Of Atmospherically Gases Using Models Flaash And Quac To Hyper-Spectral Imagery, Asmaa Maher
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
The important step is correction of the effect of atmospheric on hyper-spectral imagery of the VIS “visible”, short wave & NIR “near-infrared” spectral range. In general, the cause for limiting the use of hyperspectral images is the atmospheric effects, so, atmospheric correction is necessary for any accurate processing. In this work, two atmospheric correction techniques have been applied on Hyper-spectral image. From the raw original image and also from the FLAASH and QUAC atmospheric corrected images the spectra of vegetation, water and soil were extracted. The acquisition data for study contained Hyperion bands for year “2015” images over each of …

Function And Dissipation In Finite State Automata - From Computing To Intelligence And Back, Natesh Ganesh
Doctoral Dissertations
Society has benefited from the technological revolution and the tremendous growth in computing powered by Moore's law. However, we are fast approaching the ultimate physical limits in terms of both device sizes and the associated energy dissipation. It is important to characterize these limits in a physically grounded and implementation-agnostic manner, in order to capture the fundamental energy dissipation costs associated with performing computing operations with classical information in nano-scale quantum systems. It is also necessary to identify and understand the effect of quantum in-distinguishability, noise, and device variability on these dissipation limits. Identifying these parameters is crucial to designing …

Spatial And Temporal Variation Of Offshore Wind Power And Its Values Along The Central California Coast, Yi-Hui Wang, Ryan K. Walter, Crow White, Matthew D. Kehrli, Stephen F. Hamilton, Patrick H. Soper, Benjamin I. Ruttenberg
Physics
The analysis of the spatiotemporal variability of wind power remains limited during the planning stage of an offshore wind farm. This study provides a framework to investigate how offshore wind power varies along the Central California Coast over diurnal and seasonal time scales, which is critical for reliability and functionality of the grid system. We find that offshore wind power in this region peaks during evening hours across all seasons and maximizes in spring and summer. The timing of peak offshore wind power production better aligns with that of peak demand across California than solar and land-based wind power production, …

A Computational Study Of Sleep And The Hemispheres Of The Brain, Tera Ashley Glaze
Dissertations
Sleep and sleep cycles have been studied for over a century, and scientists have worked on modeling sleep for nearly as long as computers have existed. Despite this extensive study, sleep still holds many mysteries. Larger and more extensive sleep-wake models have been developed, and the circadian drive has been depicted in numerous fashions, as well as incorporated into scores of studies. With the ever-growing knowledge of sleep comes the need to find more ways to examine, quantify, and define it in the context of the most complex part of the human anatomy – the brain. Presented here is the …

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
The supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) can be used as a replacement of cement in the construction industry to minimize the drawbacks of normal concrete such as the emission of carbon dioxide so as to be eco-friendly. This paper presents the effect of ultra-fine slag (i.e. 25% of alccofine) as a replacement of cement for different water to binder ratios (i.e. 0.38, 0.4 and 0.45). The effect of alccofine on the concrete strength properties were studied at 7 and 28 days wherein considerable strength enhancement was observed compared to normal concrete. Thermogravimetric analysis was also carried out in which mass loss …

Continuous monitoring of bacterial growth in aqueous media is a crucial process in academic research as well as in the biotechnology industry. Bacterial growth is usually monitored by measuring the optical density of bacteria in liquid media, using benchtop spectrophotometers. Due to the large form factor of the existing spectrophotometers, they cannot be used for live monitoring of the bacteria inside bacterial incubation chambers. Additionally, the use of benchtop spectrometers for continuous monitoring requires multiple samplings and is labour intensive. To overcome these challenges, we have developed an optical density measuring device (ODX) by modifying a generic fitness tracker. The …

Effective Statistical Energy Function Based Protein Un/Structure Prediction, Avdesh Mishra
Effective Statistical Energy Function Based Protein Un/Structure Prediction, Avdesh Mishra
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Proteins are an important component of living organisms, composed of one or more polypeptide chains, each containing hundreds or even thousands of amino acids of 20 standard types. The structure of a protein from the sequence determines crucial functions of proteins such as initiating metabolic reactions, DNA replication, cell signaling, and transporting molecules. In the past, proteins were considered to always have a well-defined stable shape (structured proteins), however, it has recently been shown that there exist intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs), which lack a fixed or ordered 3D structure, have dynamic characteristics and therefore, exist in multiple states. Based on …
Impact Of Excitation-Inhibition Balance/Imbalance On Dynamics Of Cortical Neural Networks, Vidit Agrawal
Impact Of Excitation-Inhibition Balance/Imbalance On Dynamics Of Cortical Neural Networks, Vidit Agrawal
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to study the implications of Excitation/Inhibition balance and imbalance on the dynamics of ongoing (spontaneous) neural activity in the cerebral cortex region of the brain.
The first research work addresses the question that why among the continuum of Excitation-Inhibition balance configurations, particular configuration should be favored? We calculate the entropy of neural network dynamics by studying an analytically tractable network of binary neurons. Our main result from this work is that the entropy maximizes at regime which is neither excitation-dominant nor inhibition-dominant but at the boundary of both. Along this boundary we see there …

A New Approach To The Potential Energy Of Solids, Radhika Chauhan, Sanjeev K. Verma, Anushri Gupta, Anita Kumari, B. D. Indu
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
A general theory is developed to investigate the expression for potential energy without using (i) empirical results and (ii) process of parameterizing. The simple approach of thermodynamics is adopted to obtain the expressions for the interaction energy of solids in terms of interatomic separation and crystal volume. The new findings have been applied to obtain the expressions for bulk modulus and pressure. The variation of the potential energy function, which provides a means to understand the stability of a crystal has been found in excellent agreements to the earlier results. The use of obtained harmonic and anharmonic force constants may …

Closed Form Solutions Of Unsteady Two Fluid Flow In A Tube, J. Liu, C. Y. Wang
Closed Form Solutions Of Unsteady Two Fluid Flow In A Tube, J. Liu, C. Y. Wang
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Exact closed form solutions for the mathematical model of unsteady two fluid flow in a circular tube are presented. The pressure gradient is assumed to be oscillatory or exponentially increasing or decreasing in time. The instantaneous velocity prof iles and flow rates depend on the size of the core fluid, the density ratio, the viscosity ratio, and a parameter (e.g. the Womersley number) quantifying time changes. Applications include blood flow in small vessels.

The DNA molecule can be modeled as a quantum logic processor in which electron spin qubits are held coherently in each nucleotide in a logically and thermodynamically reversible enantiomeric symmetry, and can be coherently conducted along the pi-stacking interactions of aromatic nucleotide bases, while simultaneously being spin-filtered via the helicity of the DNA molecule. Entangled electron pairs can be separated by that spin-filtering, held coherently at biological temperatures in the topologically insulated nucleotide quantum gates, and incorporated into separate DNA strands during DNA replication. Two separate DNA strands that share quantum entangled electrons can be mitotically divided into individual cells, …
Feedforward And Feedback Signals In The Olfactory System, Srimoy Chakraborty
Feedforward And Feedback Signals In The Olfactory System, Srimoy Chakraborty
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The conglomeration of myriad activities in neural systems often results in prominent oscillations. The primary goal of the research presented in this thesis was to study effects of sensory stimulus on the olfactory system of rats, focusing on the olfactory bulb (OB) and the anterior piriform cortex (aPC). Extracellular electrophysiological measurements revealed distinct frequency bands of oscillations in OB and aPC. However, how these oscillatory fluctuations help the animal to process sensory input is not clearly understood. Here we show high frequency oscillations in olfactory bulb carry feedforward signals to anterior piriform cortex whereas feedback from the aPC is predominantly …
