In an experiment performed by our collaborators at Bryn Mawr, we excite rubidium-85 to a coherent superposition of the different |mj| splittings of the 37d5/2 state induced by a small electric field. After waiting for some variable delay time, we apply a time-dependent electric field to ionize the atom and record the ionized current that arrives at the detector. Due to the initial superposition, we observe an interference pattern that depends on the delay time. "It has been well established, that projectile coherent properties are important for the study of atomic fragmentation processes. Recent studies of ionization of molecular hydrogen had demonstrated that measured double differential cross sections (DDCS) are very sensitive to the coherent length of the projectile. These measurements have been performed with varied coherence length of the projectiles by controlling the geometry of the collimating slits, which are placed before the target. Investigation Of (E, 2e) Collisions And Related Phenomena, Jason Manuel Martinez

In this thesis I investigate (e, 2e) processes, or electron impact ionization, using several theoretical methods. I first examine the problem using the Born approximations, particularly the Distorted Wave Born Approximation (DWBA), focusing on the underlying processes that dominate for ionization of the 2p state of Argon and Magnesium. I investigate as well the ionization of helium and hydrogen and use the simplicity of the approximation to probe the incident particle effects on the Helium cross section.
