Kinetics And Spectroscopy Of Brno, Patrick E. Godfrey Jun 1997

Kinetics And Spectroscopy Of Brno, Patrick E. Godfrey

Theses and Dissertations

The infrared spectra and photochemistry of nitrosyl bromide, BrNO, are important to characterizing the performance of a recently demonstrated Br(2P1/2)-NO(v=2 → v=1) transfer laser pumped by photolysis of iodine molecules. This wavelength agile, mid-infrared laser may be a desirable source for remote sensing and infrared countermeasures missions. Nitrosyl bromide also plays a role in the destruction of stratospheric ozone. The kinetics of BrNO formation and destruction were examined using time-resolved photolysis techniques. The equilibrium constant for the dark reaction Br2 + 2NO (reversible reaction) 2BrNO was determined as Keq 168 ± 23 /atm and …

Measurement Of N2+ Mobility In He Via Fourier Transform Emission Spectroscopy, Patrick D. Kee Dec 1994

Measurement Of N2+ Mobility In He Via Fourier Transform Emission Spectroscopy, Patrick D. Kee

Theses and Dissertations

Recently, Hong and Miller used Fourier Transform Emission (FTE) spectroscopy to determine the N2+ mobility in helium by relating the observed Doppler shift of the N2+ (B-X) transition to the measured electric field in the discharge as determined by probes. In order to establish the technique in-house, this effort duplicated that experiment and investigated the sensitivity and utility of the method. Doppler shift measurements in this experiment disagreed significantly with those reported by Hong and Miller. Attempts to reduce the data (and thus determine the mobility) using a model developed by Hong and Miller were unsuccessful. …

High Resolution Fourier Transform Spectroscopy Of The First Overtone Of The N-O Stretch In Nitrosyl Bromide, Todd E. Wiest Sep 1994

High Resolution Fourier Transform Spectroscopy Of The First Overtone Of The N-O Stretch In Nitrosyl Bromide, Todd E. Wiest

Theses and Dissertations

Infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy of the first overtone of the nitric oxide (NO) bond stretch in nitrosyl bromide (ONBr) has been performed at a resolution of 0.02cm-1 to obtain the rotational parameters of the V1 = 2 energy level. Roughly 1000 transitions have been observed for rotational levels up to J = 80 and Ka = 7. The calculation of the complete set of rotational energy levels of this asymmetric molecule requires the numerical diagonalization of four, tridiagonal matricies for each J. From a non-linear least squares fit of observed transitions with J ≤ 40 using an …

High Resolution Fourier Transform Absorption Spectrum Of 79Br2 B3Π(0U+) ← X1ΣG+, Robert E. Franklin Dec 1993

High Resolution Fourier Transform Absorption Spectrum Of 79Br2 B3Π(0U+) ← X1ΣG+, Robert E. Franklin

Theses and Dissertations

High Resolution Fourier Transform Spectroscopy has been conducted for the 79Br2 B3π(0u+) ← X1Σg+ system of 79Br2. A total of 64 vibrational levels, including v"= 0-3 and v' = 10-33, have been observed and assigned. Rotational levels as high as J=76 were observed. A global fitting routine has been developed to fit the rotational spectra to the Dunham Expansion. Using Bv and Dv for both the X and B state, rotational transitions were calculated to within 0. 02 cm-1. The expansions of …

Collisional Detachment Of Anions Using Fourier Transform Mass Spectrometry, Kevin B. Riehl Dec 1992

Collisional Detachment Of Anions Using Fourier Transform Mass Spectrometry, Kevin B. Riehl

Theses and Dissertations

Fourier Transform Mass Spectrometry (FTMS) is used to make energy resolved ion-neutral reaction measurements at high translational energies (up to several hundred eV). The technique is demonstrated for collisional detachment of anions, and should be easily applied to other inelastic reactions. Collisional detachment cross sections of iodine anions onto gas phase targets of neon, xenon, and trifluoromethyl iodide are measured for 1-300 eV (lab frame). Peak detachment cross sections are roughly 2, 8.5, and 7 Å2, respectively. Ion kinetic measurements show the iodine anion is unreactive in trifluoromethyl iodide at thermal energies. Positive ion chemistry is consistent with …
