Time Resolved X-Ray Spectroscopy Of Highly Charged Ar, Nd, And Pr, Timothy Burke May 2024

Time Resolved X-Ray Spectroscopy Of Highly Charged Ar, Nd, And Pr, Timothy Burke

All Dissertations

Highly Charged Ions (HCIs) may be considered ideal mini-laboratory in which one can study the physics of matter and light in an environment of high internal electric field that can not be recreated with standard lab equipment. The remaining electron(s) exist in the extremely large electric field of the nucleus and therefore measurements of electronic transitions in these systems provide stringent tests of our understanding of physics in extreme conditions. Quantum electrodynamics (QED) despite being a powerful theory exhibits large discrepancies for systems under extreme conditions. The work here investigates the atomic properties within non-Maxwellian plasmas. The HCI plasmas studied …

Experimental Analyses Of Emission Lines In The Uv/Vis/Nir Range For Astrophysically-Important Elements: From The Iron Group To R-Process Elements, Brynna Neff May 2024

Experimental Analyses Of Emission Lines In The Uv/Vis/Nir Range For Astrophysically-Important Elements: From The Iron Group To R-Process Elements, Brynna Neff

All Dissertations

Analysis of astrophysical phenomena requires an understanding of the electronic

structure and transition probabilities of the elements present in that environment,

yet there are still many charge states of heavy elements whose electronic

structures and spectroscopic properties are not yet well understood. To address this,

we investigated the spectroscopic properties of three different elements through an

analysis of spectra collected from three different experimental apparatuses.

In order to better understand the spectroscopic properties of Ni I and II, we

analyzed spectra collected from the Compact Toroidal Hybrid (CTH) apparatus at

Auburn University. In this experiment, a nickel sample was inserted …

Study Of Highly Charged Ion Charge Exchange With Applications To X-Ray Astrophysics, Richard Mattish Aug 2023

Study Of Highly Charged Ion Charge Exchange With Applications To X-Ray Astrophysics, Richard Mattish

All Dissertations

Highly charged ions (HCIs) exist in many hot astrophysical environments where they play an important role in plasma dynamics. Charge exchange involving highly charged ions has been shown to be responsible for many observed X-ray emissions from a variety of astrophysical sources. Proper modeling of these environments requires an understanding of this process, including the electronic structure of each ion species as well as their charge exchange cross sections. This dissertation investigates charge exchange processes with highly charged ions which are present in astrophysical environments via a laboratory-based study.

The Clemson University electron beam ion trap (CUEBIT) laboratory was utilized …

Using Coherence And Interference To Study The Few Body Dynamics In Simple Atomic Collisions Systems, Sujan Bastola Aug 2022

Using Coherence And Interference To Study The Few Body Dynamics In Simple Atomic Collisions Systems, Sujan Bastola

Doctoral Dissertations

"Atomic Collision experiments are best suited to sensitively test the few-body dynamics of simple systems. The few-body dynamics, in turn, can be sensitively affected by interference effects. However, an important requirement to observe interference effects in atomic scattering experiments is that the incoming projectile beam must be coherent. The coherence properties of the incoming projectile can be controlled by the geometry of the collimating slit placed before the target. We performed a kinematically complete experiment where a 75 keV proton beam is crossed with a molecular hydrogen beam to study the dissociative capture process. The motivation for this project was …

Atomic Gradiometry Based On The Interference Of Microwave Optical Sidebands, Kaleb L. Campbell Jul 2022

Atomic Gradiometry Based On The Interference Of Microwave Optical Sidebands, Kaleb L. Campbell

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

We describe a novel pulsed magnetic gradiometer based on the optical interference of sidebands generated using two spatially separated alkali vapor cells. The sidebands are produced with high efficiency using parametric frequency conversion of a probe beam interacting with Rubiduim 87 atoms in a coherent superposition of magnetically sensitive hyperfine ground states. First, experimental evidence of the sideband process is described for both steady-state and pulsed operation. Then, a theoretical framework is developed that accurately models sideband generation based on density matrix formalism. The gradiometer is then constructed using two spatially separated vapor cells, and a beat-note is generated. The …

Angular Distribution Of Electron-Helium Scattering In The Presence Of A 1.17 Ev Laser Field, Brian N. Kim Jan 2022

Angular Distribution Of Electron-Helium Scattering In The Presence Of A 1.17 Ev Laser Field, Brian N. Kim

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

We have measured relative differential cross sections for 350 eV electrons scattered by a helium target in the presence of 1.17 eV photons from an Nd:YAG laser. We report an angular distribution of free-free electrons that were scattered elastically at angles between 15o and 80o and of free-free electrons that underwent the process of electron-impact excitation of helium to its unresolved (1s2s)1S and (1s2p)1P excited states at angles between 1o and 80o. Our experiments test the momentum transfer dependence and the relationship between elastic and inelastic scattering in the Kroll-Watson approximation. …

Time-Dependent Photoionization Of Gaseous Nebulae, Ehab Elsayed Elhoussieny Ahmed Jun 2017

Time-Dependent Photoionization Of Gaseous Nebulae, Ehab Elsayed Elhoussieny Ahmed

Dissertations

We study time-dependent photoionization of gaseous nebulae, i.e. the physical conditions and spectra of astronomical plasmas photoionized by a time-dependent source of ionizing radiation. Our study proceeds in two chief steps: First, we start with a simplified model of plasmas of pure H. Second, we develop a more realistic model of plasmas composed of a mixture of chemical elements. For the first step, we wrote a time-dependent photoionization code (TDP) that solves the coupled system of equations for ionization, energy balance, and radiation transfer in their full time-dependent forms For the second step, we developed a more realistic code (TDXSTAR) …
