Optical Two-Dimensional Coherent Spectroscopy Of Many-Body Dynamics In Quantum Materials, Maria Fernanda Munoz Aug 2021

Optical Two-Dimensional Coherent Spectroscopy Of Many-Body Dynamics In Quantum Materials, Maria Fernanda Munoz

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the rise of the concept of quantum materials (QM), these materials described as many-body quantum systems (interacting atoms, molecules, or electrons) have been suitable for many optoelectronic and quantum applications. Additionally, there has been significant interest in the research of QM to understand the underlying physics behind their extraordinary optical properties. Examples of QM are ultracold atoms, layered 2D semiconductors, supramolecular materials, and more. In 2012, a high energy conversion efficiency of over 10% was reported for the first time for metal-halide perovskite (MHP) solar cells, opening a new era for photovoltaics research. The reported efficiencies have been improved …

The Population Densities Of Argon Metastable Levels, Nada Khogeer, Chelsy Gonzalez, Milka Nikolic Apr 2019

The Population Densities Of Argon Metastable Levels, Nada Khogeer, Chelsy Gonzalez, Milka Nikolic

Physics and Astronomy

In this experiment, we used the optical emission spectroscopy (OES) method to obtain the main properties of low temperature Argon plasma. The experiment was sustained in powers and pressures that ranges from 30-100 W and 15-100 mTorr. We used numerical methods for the Argon kinetic model to calculate metastable levels and resonant states for the first excited states in low temperature Argon plasma. By finding the ratio of two spectral lines and finding another ratio from a different upper energy level that goes down to the same two lower energy levels, we can construct a system of two nonlinear equations. …

A comparative analysis of two popular spectroscopy techniques is conducted in a coaxial cylindrical capacitively coupled discharge designed for the plasma processing of superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities. The density of the metastable and resonant levels in Ar is measured in both Ar and Ar/Cl2 discharges to properly characterize the unique discharge system and aid in the development of a cavity etching routine. The first method, deemed the “branching fraction method,” utilizes the sensitivity of photon reabsorption of radiative decay to measure the lower state (metastable and resonant) densities by taking ratios of spectral lines with a common upper …

Short-term acclimation response of individual cells of Thalassiosira weissflogii was monitored by Synchrotron FTIR imaging over the span of 75 minutes. The cells, collected from batch cultures, were maintained in a constant flow of medium, at an irradiance of 120 μmol m−2 s−1 and at 20 °C. Multiple internal reflections due to the micro fluidic channel were modeled, and showed that fringes are additive sinusoids to the pure absorption of the other components of the system. Preprocessing of the hyperspectral cube (x, y, Abs(λ)) included removing spectral fringe using an EMSC approach. Principal component analysis of the time series of …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Room temperature NH3 absorption spectra recorded at the Kitt Peak National Solar Observatory in 1980 are analyzed. The spectra cover two regions in the visible: 15,200 - 15,700 cm-1 and 17,950 - 18,250 cm-1. These high overtone rotation-vibration spectra are analyzed using both combination differences and variational line lists. Two variational line lists were computed using the TROVE nuclear motion program: one is based on an ab initio potential energy surface (PES) while the other used a semi-empirical PES. Ab initio dipole moment surfaces are used in both cases. 95 energy levels with J = 1 …

Ultracold Trimer Ion Formation Of Rb And K, Michael Cantara Apr 2016

Ultracold Trimer Ion Formation Of Rb And K, Michael Cantara

University Scholar Projects

The cooling of molecules into the ultracold regime allows for high resolution laser spectroscopy that reveals their complex rotational and vibrational structure. As the temperature is lowered towards absolute zero, the kinetic energy of the particles approaches zero, and therefore the Doppler shift approaches zero. With the Doppler shift negligibly small, spectral resolution is now primarily limited by the natural linewidth of the molecular peaks. Further, ultracold temperatures make possible the production of atoms or molecules that will reside in the lowest few states of the system. The high population in a few select states provides stronger and less congested …

Observations Of The High Vibrational Levels Of The B′′B̄ 1Σu+ State Of H2, Alexander M. Chartrand, W. Duan, R. C. Ekey, Elizabeth Mccormack

Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship

Double-resonance laser spectroscopy via the E F 1Σg+, v'=6, J'=0-2 state was used to probe the high vibrational levels of the B"B-bar 1Σu+ state of molecular hydrogen. Resonantly-enhanced multiphoton ionization spectra were recorded by detecting ion production as a function of energy using a time of flight mass spectrometer. New measurements of energies for the v=51-66 levels for the B"B-bar state of H2 are reported, which, taken with previous results, span the v=46-69 vibrational levels. Results for energy levels are compared to theoretical close-coupled calculations [L. Wolniewicz, T. …

In-Package Atmospheric Pressure Cold Plasma Treatment Of Cherry Tomatoes, N. Misra, Kevin Keener, Paula Bourke, J Mosnier, Patrick Cullen

Articles

Cold plasma is increasingly under research for decontamination of foods, especially fresh fruits and vegetables. The effect of cold plasma on food quality, however, remains under researched. This study investigates the effects of cold plasma generated within a sealed package from a dielectric barrier discharge on the physical quality parameters and respiration rates of cherry tomatoes. Respiration rates and weight loss were monitored continuously, while other parameters are reported at the end of storage period. Differences among weight loss, pH and firmness for control and treated cherry tomatoes were insignificant towards the end of storage life. Changes in respiration rates …

Spatial And Spectral Performance Of A Chromotomosynthetic Hyperspectral Imaging System, Randall L. Bostick, Glen P. Perram

Faculty Publications

The spatial and spectral resolutions achievable by a prototype rotating prism chromotomosynthetic imaging (CTI) system operating in the visible spectrum are described. The instrument creates hyperspectral imagery by collecting a set of 2D images with each spectrally projected at a different rotation angle of the prism. Mathematical reconstruction techniques that have been well tested in the field of medical physics are used to reconstruct the data to produce the 3D hyperspectral image. The instrument operates with a 100 mm focusing lens in the spectral range of 400–900 nm with a field of view of 71.6 mrad and angular resolution of …

The Role Of Llnl's Fast Calibration Facility In Diagnosing Nif Fusion Plasmas, Joshua G. Thompson, Carey Scott, Greg V. Brown Aug 2011

The Role Of Llnl's Fast Calibration Facility In Diagnosing Nif Fusion Plasmas, Joshua G. Thompson, Carey Scott, Greg V. Brown

STAR Program Research Presentations

The Fusion and Astrophysics (FAST) Calibration and Diagnostic Facility uses the original Electron Beam Ion Trap (EBIT-I) to profile x-ray filters that are used in the Dante Soft X-Ray Diagnostic at the National Ignition Facility (NIF). FAST has an advantage over any other facility not only for its high accuracy, but also for its proximity to NIF in the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). This makes for highly accurate and near-instantaneous filter calibration turnover.

EBIT-I was first constructed to create, trap, and observe static highly charged ions (HCIs) and conduct experimental astrophysics (creating an x-ray spectroscopy catalogue of ions). To …

Laboratory Astrophysics: Using Ebit Measurements To Interpret High Resolution Spectra From Celestial Sources, Carey Scott, Joshua Thompson, N. Hell, Greg V. Brown

STAR Program Research Presentations

Astrophysicists use radiation to investigate the physics controlling a variety of celestial sources, including stellar atmospheres, black holes, and binary systems. By measuring the spectrum of the emitted radiation, astrophysicists can determine a source’s temperature and composition. Accurate atomic data are needed for reliably interpreting these spectra. Here we present an overview of how LLNL’s EBIT facility is used to put the atomic data on sound footing for use by the high energy astrophysics community.

A Six-Dimensional H2–H2 Potential Energy Surface For Bound State Spectroscopy, Robert Hinde Jan 2008

A Six-Dimensional H2–H2 Potential Energy Surface For Bound State Spectroscopy, Robert Hinde

Chemistry Publications and Other Works

We present a six-dimensional potential energy surface for the (H2)2 dimer based on coupled-cluster electronic structure calculations employing large atom-centered Gaussian basis sets and a small set of midbond functions at the dimer’s center of mass. The surface is intended to describe accurately the bound and quasibound states of the dimers (H2)2, (D2)2, and H2–D2 that correlate with H2 or D2 monomers in the rovibrational levels (v, j) =(0,0), (0,2), (1,0), and (1,2). We employ a close-coupled approach to compute the …

Infrared-Active Vibron Bands Associated With Substitutional Impurities In Solid Parahydrogen, Robert Hinde Jan 2003

Infrared-Active Vibron Bands Associated With Substitutional Impurities In Solid Parahydrogen, Robert Hinde

Chemistry Publications and Other Works

We present a model for the line shapes of infrared-active Q1(0) vibron bands observed in solid parahydrogen doped with low concentrations of spherical substitutional impurities. The line shapes are highly sensitive to the H2 vibrational dependence of the dopant–H2 interaction. When this vibrational dependence is strong, the dopant can trap the infrared-active vibron in its first solvation shell; in this case, the trapped vibron manifests itself in the absorption spectrum as a narrow feature to the red of the pure solid’s vibron band.

Spectroscopy Of Atoms Confined To The Single Node Of A Standing Wave In A Parallel-Plate Cavity, V. Sandoghar, C. I. Sukenik, S. Haroche, E. A. Hinds

Physics Faculty Publications

We have performed spectroscopy on sodium atoms that are optically channeled in the single node of a laser standing wave set up across a parallel-plate cavity. Using this technique we have extended our previous measurement of the Lennard-Jones van der Waals energy-level shift [Sandoghdar et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 68, 3432 (1992)] down to a cavity width of ~500 nm. We discuss the applications of this technique to the precise measurement of atom-surface distances.

Self-Consistent Determination Of Electronic Structure And Elementary Excitations Of Finite Modulation-Doped Superlattices, Roger H. Yu Jun 1993

Self-Consistent Determination Of Electronic Structure And Elementary Excitations Of Finite Modulation-Doped Superlattices, Roger H. Yu

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

A self-consistent framework for the study of the electronic level structure of finite superlattices has been proposed. One of the surface states (Tamm states) found in our calculation crosses the Fermi energy in the energy gap when the depletion effect near the surface increases. We have shown the existence of low-energy Tamm states in our calculation when the surface barrier is lower than that of the interior. The electronic excitations of the superlattice have been studied via the electron-energy-loss function within the random-phase approximation. Two plasmon modes (well above the phonon response frequency) due to the Tamm states have also …
