Combined photoelectron spectroscopic experiments and computational studies have been performed on Al3Hn- (n=1-9) clusters. Three modes of hydrogen bonding to the Al-3 moiety have been observed: terminal, bridging, and capping. Among various hydrides, Al3H5- and Al3H8- clusters have highest HOMO-LUMO gap and largest electron affinity, respectively. Our studies indicate that as the number of hydrogen atoms increase the presence of AlH2 groups, representing the tetrahedral coordination of the Al atom, which in turn led to the stoichiometric ring structure.

To elucidate the energy transfer and reexcitation processes in Eu-doped GaN layers that are used in recently developed, highly efficient red light-emitting diodes, a systematic series of photoluminescence and time-resolved photoluminescence (TR-PL) measurements was performed. Critical insights on how “slow” Eu processes (∼µs) can compete against fast semiconductor processes (∼ps) are revealed using TR-PL with a high temporal resolution, as it is found that the initial energy transfer from GaN to the Eu3+ ions takes place rapidly, on a timescale of <100 ps. Below band-gap resonant excitation was used to identify the states into which the energy transfer occurs. For the most efficient Eu defect complexes, this transfer dominantly occurs directly into the 5 D0 state of Eu3+. Less efficient complexes also exhibit transfer into the 5 D2 state, the emission of which can be detected using photoluminescence at low temperature, indicating the importance of the excitation pathway on device efficiency. Under high excitation intensity, reexcitation can also occur, leading to a redistribution of population into the 5 D2, 5 D1, or 5 D0 states.

Eu ions have been doped into GaN in order to achieve red luminescence under current injection, where coupling between the Eu ions and intrinsic defects such as vacancies are known to play an important role. However, the charge state of the vacancies and the impact it would have on the optical and magnetic properties of the Eu ions have not been explored. Through a combination of first-principle calculations and experimental results, the influence of the charge state of the defect environment surrounding the Eu ions has been investigated. Enhancement Of Hopping Conductivity By Spontaneous Fractal Ordering Of Low-Energy Sites, Tianran Chen, Brian Skinner

Variable-range hopping conductivity has long been understood in terms of a canonical prescription for relating the single-particle density of states to the temperature-dependent conductivity. Here we demonstrate that this prescription breaks down in situations where a large and long-ranged random potential develops. In particular, we examine a canonical model of a completely compensated semiconductor, and we show that at low temperatures hopping proceeds along self-organized, low-dimensional subspaces having fractal dimension d = 2. We derive and study numerically the spatial structure of these subspaces, as well as the conductivity and density of states that result from them. One of our …
