Waiting For The Magic: A Historical And Mathematical Study Of Queues In Disney Theme Parks, Nina E. Becket Jul 2026

Waiting For The Magic: A Historical And Mathematical Study Of Queues In Disney Theme Parks, Nina E. Becket

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

This paper, written as part of an honors research project in high school, provides an introduction to the line and queuing systems at Disney theme parks. We begin with a brief history of Disney World and its creators. We then introduce the basics of queuing theory and queuing notation. Finally, we examine modern line systems at Disney (as of 2023) and the future of its different queue systems.

Franz And Georg: Cantor's Mathematics Of The Infinite In The Work Of Kafka, Kevin P. Knudson Feb 2017

Franz And Georg: Cantor's Mathematics Of The Infinite In The Work Of Kafka, Kevin P. Knudson

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

The infinite plays a significant role in many of Franz Kafka's stories. In this note we show that a version of the middle-thirds Cantor set construction appears in Kafka's Great Wall of China. His description of the Wall's construction mirrors an iterated system of functions whose limit set is the Cantor set; we present the relevant mathematical details and a close reading of the text of the story to illustrate this metaphor.

The Cantor Trilogy, Harun Šiljak Jan 2015

The Cantor Trilogy, Harun Šiljak

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

The Cantor trilogy is a mathematical dystopia featuring JHM as an important part of that world... at least to humans.

Benjamin Banneker's Original Handwritten Document: Observations And Study Of The Cicada, Janet E. Barber, Asamoah Nkwanta

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Benjamin Banneker, farmer, mathematician, astronomer, and scientist, is known for his mathematical puzzles, ephemeris calculations, almanacs, his wooden clock, land surveying work, and famous letter on human rights. However, as a naturalist, his scientific and systematic observations of the cicadas are less known. In this paper we publicize Banneker’s naturalistic study of the seventeen-year periodic cycle of the cicada and make available the original handwritten document of his observations. We also introduce the audience of this journal to an intriguing natural problem involving prime numbers.
