Three Possible Applications Of Neutrosophic Logic In Fundamental And Applied Sciences, Victor Christianto, Robert Neil Boyd, Florentin Smarandache
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
In Neutrosophic Logic, a basic assertion is that there are variations of about everything that we can measure; the variations surround three parameters called T,I,F (truth, indeterminacy, falsehood) which can take a range of values. This paper shortly reviews the links among aether and matter creation from the perspective of Neutrosophic Logic. Once we accept the existence of aether as physical medium, then we can start to ask on what causes matter ejection, as observed in various findings related to quasars etc. One particular cosmology model known as VMH (variable mass hypothesis) has been suggested by notable astrophysicists like Halton …

Sound is one of the types of waves that can be felt by the sense of hearing (ears). In physics, the definition of sound is something that is produced from objects that vibrate. Objects that produce sound are called sound sources. The sound source that vibrates will vibrate the molecules into the air around it. Sound is mechanical compression or longitudinal waves that propagate through the medium. This medium or intermediate agent can be liquid, solid, gas. So, sound waves can propagate for example in water, coal, or air. Most sounds are a combination of various vibratory signals composed of …

Fluids In Music: The Mathematics Of Pan’S Flutes, Bogdan Nita, Sajan Ramanathan
Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
We discuss the mathematics behind the Pan’s flute. We analyze how the sound is created, the relationship between the notes that the pipes produce, their frequencies and the length of the pipes. We find an equation which models the curve that appears at the bottom of any Pan’s flute due to the different pipe lengths.

Multiplicativity Of Connes' Calculus, Partha Sarathi Chakraborty, Satyajit Guin
Journal Articles
In his book on noncommutative geometry, Connes constructed a differential graded algebra out of a spectral triple. Lack of monoidality of this construction is investigated. We identify a suitable monoidal subcategory of the category of spectral triples and show that when restricted to this subcategory the construction of Connes is monoidal. Richness of this subcategory is exhibited by establishing a faithful endofunctor to this subcategory.
A Method For Automatic Detection Of Tongued And Slurred Note Transitions In Clarinet Playing, Whitney L. Coyle, Jack D. Gabriel
A Method For Automatic Detection Of Tongued And Slurred Note Transitions In Clarinet Playing, Whitney L. Coyle, Jack D. Gabriel
Faculty Publications
This study offers a simple method to characterize two transition types in passages of music in order to automatically distinguish slurred transitions from tongued transitions in musical settings. Data were recorded from musicians playing a clarinet with a sensor-equipped mouthpiece measuring blowing pressure in the mouth and pressure in the mouthpiece. This method allows for comparing transitions in different musical contexts, playing regimes, and between players. The method is highly reliable in automatically detecting transition types in recorded clarinet playing in both simple and more complex passages.
Modeling Proton Relative Biological Effectiveness Using Monte Carlo Simulations Of Microdosimetry, Mark A. Newpower
Modeling Proton Relative Biological Effectiveness Using Monte Carlo Simulations Of Microdosimetry, Mark A. Newpower
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Proton therapy is a radiotherapy modality that can offer a better physical dose distribution when compared to photon radiotherapy by taking advantage of the Bragg peak, a narrow region of rapid energy loss. Proton therapy is also known to offer an enhanced relative biological effectiveness (RBE) compared to photons. In the current clinical standard, RBE is fixed at 1.1 at all points along the proton beam, meaning protons are assumed to require 10% less dose than photons to achieve target coverage and organ at risk (OAR) sparing. However, there is mounting clinical evidence, and a significant number of in vitro …
Closed Form Solutions Of Unsteady Two Fluid Flow In A Tube, J. Liu, C. Y. Wang
Closed Form Solutions Of Unsteady Two Fluid Flow In A Tube, J. Liu, C. Y. Wang
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Exact closed form solutions for the mathematical model of unsteady two fluid flow in a circular tube are presented. The pressure gradient is assumed to be oscillatory or exponentially increasing or decreasing in time. The instantaneous velocity prof iles and flow rates depend on the size of the core fluid, the density ratio, the viscosity ratio, and a parameter (e.g. the Womersley number) quantifying time changes. Applications include blood flow in small vessels.
Realization Of Tensor Product And Of Tensor Factorization Of Rational Functions, Daniel Alpay, Izchak Lewkowicz
Realization Of Tensor Product And Of Tensor Factorization Of Rational Functions, Daniel Alpay, Izchak Lewkowicz
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We study the state space realization of a tensor product of a pair of rational functions. At the expense of “inflating” the dimensions, we recover the classical expressions for realization of a regular product of rational functions. Under an additional assumption that the limit at infinity of a given rational function exists and is equal to identity, we introduce an explicit formula for a tensor factorization of this function.

Effects Of Fabrication Errors On The Focusing Performance Of A Sector Metalens, S. S. Stafeev, A. G. Nalimov, Liam O’Faolain, M. V. Kotlyar
Cappa Publications
Using e-beam lithography, a 16-sector spiral metalens was fabricated in an amorphous silicon, capable of converting linearly polarized incident light into an azimuthally polarized optical vortex. When illuminated by a 633-nm linearly polarized laser beam, the metalens generated a near-surface subwavelength focal spot equal to 0.75 of the incident wavelength at full-width of half-maximum intensity. The focusing performance of the spiral metalens was numerically shown to be sensitive to the deviation of the factual microrelief from the calculated height. For the designed microrelief height, a circularly polarized incident beam was focused into a bright ring with a reverse energy flow …
Bipartite Quantum Interactions: Entangling And Information Processing Abilities, Siddhartha Das
Bipartite Quantum Interactions: Entangling And Information Processing Abilities, Siddhartha Das
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The aim of this thesis is to advance the theory behind quantum information processing tasks, by deriving fundamental limits on bipartite quantum interactions and dynamics. A bipartite quantum interaction corresponds to an underlying Hamiltonian that governs the physical transformation of a two-body open quantum system. Under such an interaction, the physical transformation of a bipartite quantum system is considered in the presence of a bath, which may be inaccessible to an observer. The goal is to determine entangling abilities of such arbitrary bipartite quantum interactions. Doing so provides fundamental limitations on information processing tasks, including entanglement distillation and secret key …

Slip And Chemical Reaction Effects On Peristaltic Transport Of A Cou-Ple Stress Fluid Through A Permeable Medium With Complaint Wall, Gurunath Sankad, Mallinath Dhange
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In the present article, the effects of slip and homogeneous-heterogeneous chemical reaction on peristaltic pumping of a couple stress fluid through a permeable medium with complaint wall is studied as a model for transport phenomena occurring in the small intestine of human beings during digestion process. The mean effective coefficient of dispersion on simultaneous homo-geneous, heterogeneous chemical reactions has been derived through long wavelength assump-tion, and conditions of Taylor’s limit. The behaviors of key parameters on the mean effective dispersion coefficient have been examined through the graphs. It is found that slip and wall pa-rameters, and amplitude ratio favor the …
Can A Comprehensive Transition Plan To Barefoot Running Be The Solution To The Injury Epidemic In American Endurance Runners?, Michael A. Scarlett
Can A Comprehensive Transition Plan To Barefoot Running Be The Solution To The Injury Epidemic In American Endurance Runners?, Michael A. Scarlett
CMC Senior Theses
Fossils belonging to the genus Homo, dating as far back as two million years ago, exhibit uniquely efficient features suggesting that early humans had evolved to become exceptional endurance runners. Although they did not have the cushion or stability-control features provided in our modern day running shoes, our early human ancestors experienced far less of the running-related injuries we experience today. The injury rate has been estimated as high as 90% annually for Americans training for a marathon and as high as 79% annually for all American endurance runners. There is an injury epidemic in conventionally shod populations that …

Two-Dimensional Model Of Nanoparticle Deposition In The Alveolar Ducts Of The Human Lung, Anju Saini, V. K. Katiyar, Pratibha Pratibha
Two-Dimensional Model Of Nanoparticle Deposition In The Alveolar Ducts Of The Human Lung, Anju Saini, V. K. Katiyar, Pratibha Pratibha
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper a mathematical model for nanoparticle deposition in the alveolar ducts of the human lung airways is proposed. There were huge inconsistencies in deposition between ducts of a particular generation and inside every alveolated duct, signifying that limited particle concentrations can be much bigger than the mean acinar concentration. A large number of particles are unsuccessful to way out the structure during expiration. Finite difference method has been used to solve the unsteady nonlinear Navier–Stokes equations in cylindrical coordinate system governing flow assuming axial symmetry under laminar flow condition so that the problem efficiently turns into two-dimensional. An …

Hematocrit Level On Blood Flow Through A Stenosed Artery With Permeable Wall: A Theoretical Study, A. Malek, A. Hoque
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The paper deals with the hematocrit level on resistance of flow, wall shear stress in a stenosed artery of permeable wall. In the paper we have developed and solved some theoretical formulas based on stenosis and hematocrit effects. The results highlight that the resistance of flow increases for increasing of stenosis height where the hematocrit level (35%-45%) has significant effects. Moreover, the effects of slip parameter and Darcy number due to permeability of the wall on resistance of flow have been investigated. The effects of hematocrit level, slip parameter and Darcy number have been focused on wall shear stress of …
Hydromagnetic Peristaltic Transportation With Porous Medium Through An Asymmetric Vertical Tapered Channel And Joule Heating, S. R. Kumar
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The present paper deals with a theoretical investigation of the hydromagnetic peristaltic transportation with porous medium through coaxial asymmetric vertical tapered channel and joule heating which has been studied under the assumption of long wavelength approximations. Exact analytical expressions of axial velocity, volume flow rate, pressure gradient, temperature and heat transfer coefficient at both walls were calculated. The effects of various emerging parameters, Hartmann number, Non-uniform parameter, Prandtl number, Heat generator parameter, Brinkman number, Porous parameter are discussed through the use of graphs. We notice from the figures that the temperature of the fluid increases in the entire vertical tapered …
Temperature Dependent Surface Reconstruction Of Freely Suspended Films Of 4-N-Heptyloxybenzylidene-4-N-Heptylaniline, Daniel E. Martinez Zambrano
Temperature Dependent Surface Reconstruction Of Freely Suspended Films Of 4-N-Heptyloxybenzylidene-4-N-Heptylaniline, Daniel E. Martinez Zambrano
Lawrence University Honors Projects
Surfaces of freely suspended thick films of 4-n-heptyloxybenzylidene-4-n-heptylaniline (7O.7) in the crystalline-B phase have been imaged using non-contact mode atomic force microscopy. Steps are observed on the surface of the film with a height of 3.0 +/- 0.1 nm corresponding to the upright molecular length of 7O.7. In addition, we find that the step width varies with temperature between 56 and 59 degrees C. The steps are many times wider than the molecular length, suggesting that the steps are not on the surface but instead originate from edge dislocations in the interior. Using a strain model for liquid crystalline layers …

Suspension Model For Blood Flow Through A Tapering Catheterized Inclined Artery With Asymmetric Stenosis, Devajyoti Biswas, Moumita Paul
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
We intend to study a particle fluid suspension model for blood flow through an axially asymmetric but radially symmetric mild stenosis in the annular region of an inclined tapered artery and a co-axial catheter in a suitable flow geometry has been considered to investigate the influence of velocity slip at the stenotic wall as well as hematocrit, shape parameter. The model also includes the tapering effect and inclination of the artery. Expressions for the flow variables have been derived analytically and their variations with various flow parameters are represented graphically. The results for the different values of the parameters involved …

Mathematical Model: Comparative Study Of Thermal Effects Of Laser In Corneal Refractive Surgeries, Gokul Kc, Dil B. Gurung, Pushpa R. Adhikary
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Lasers have been widely used in ophthalmology. Refractive errors are some of the most common ophthalmic abnormalities worldwide. Laser refractive surgery was developed to correct refractive errors myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Two types of laser surgical techniques: lamellar and thermal are available to reshape the corneal curvature. Ultraviolet (UV) emitting argon fluoride (ArF) excimer laser is used to sculpt cornea in lamellar procedures, whereas, infrared (IR) emitting holmium yttrium aluminum garnet (Ho: YAG) laser is used to shrink cornea in thermal procedure. Tissue heating is common in all types of laser surgical techniques. Hence, in this paper, a finite element …
Mathematical Modeling Of Two-Dimensional Unsteady Flow In Growing Tumor, N. Gracia, D. N. Riahi, R. Roy
Mathematical Modeling Of Two-Dimensional Unsteady Flow In Growing Tumor, N. Gracia, D. N. Riahi, R. Roy
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
We investigate the problem of unsteady fluid flow in growing solid tumors. We develop a mathematical model for a growing tumor whose boundary is taken as a sphere, and the unsteady fluid flow within the tumor is assumed to be two dimensional with respect to the radial distance and the latitudinal angle in spherical coordinates. The expressions for the time, radial and latitudinal variations of the flow velocity, pressure, and the two investigated drug concentrations within the tumor were determined analytically. We calculated these quantities in the tumor as well as in a corresponding normal tissue. We find, in particular, …
Mass Additivity And A Priori Entailment, Kelvin J. Mcqueen
Mass Additivity And A Priori Entailment, Kelvin J. Mcqueen
Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research
The principle of mass additivity states that the mass of a composite object is the sum of the masses of its elementary components. Mass additivity is true in Newtonian mechanics but false in special relativity. Physicists have explained why mass additivity is true in Newtonian mechanics by reducing it to Newton’s microphysical laws. This reductive explanation does not fit well with deducibility theories of reductive explanation such as the modern Nagelian theory of reduction, and the a priori entailment theory of reduction that is prominent in the philosophy of mind. Nonetheless, I argue that a reconstruction of the explanation that …

Axial Vibrations Of Brass Wind Instrument Bells And Their Acoustical Influence: Experiments, Thomas R. Moore, Britta R. Gorman, Michelle Rokni, Wilfried Kausel, Vasileios Chatziioannou
Faculty Publications
It has recently been proposed that the effects of structural vibrations on the radiated sound ofbrass wind instruments may be attributable to axial modes of vibration with mode shapes that contain no radial nodes [Kausel, Chatziioannou, Moore, Gorman, and Rokni, J. Acoust. Soc. Am.137, 3149–3162 (2015)]. Results of experiments are reported that support this theory. Mechanical measurements of a trumpet bell demonstrate that these axial modes do exist inbrass wind instruments. The quality factor of the mechanical resonances can be on the order of 10 or less, making them broad enough to encompass the frequency range of previously reported effects …

This result is obtained using a “quasi-optimal” reference waveform in the computation of the joint entropy imaging technique used to image the accumulating nanoparticles.
Forecasting Longitudinal Changes In Oropharyngeal Tumor Volume, Position, And Morphology During Image-Guided Radiation Therapy, Adam D. Yock
Forecasting Longitudinal Changes In Oropharyngeal Tumor Volume, Position, And Morphology During Image-Guided Radiation Therapy, Adam D. Yock
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
The purpose of this work was to generate, evaluate, and compare models that predict longitudinal changes in oropharyngeal tumor volume, position, and morphology during radiation therapy.
One volume, one position, and two morphology (size, shape, and position) feature vectors were used to describe 35 oropharyngeal gross tumor volumes (GTVs) during radiation therapy. The two morphology feature vectors comprised the coordinates of the GTV centroids and one of two shape descriptors. One shape descriptor was based on radial distances between the GTV centroid and 614 surface landmarks. The other was based on a spherical harmonic decomposition of these distances. For a …
Impact Testing Of Youth-Level Helmets Versus College-Level Helmets, Nicole Hermann
Impact Testing Of Youth-Level Helmets Versus College-Level Helmets, Nicole Hermann
Industrial Technology and Packaging
With so many studies being conducted on professional football players regarding concussions and other related brain injuries, it’s amazing that such an important demographic has been missed. While NFL players are just as subjected to serious injuries as anyone else or even more so, it is important to remember that these players are outfitted, in most cases, with top-of-the-line equipment -- especially their helmets. If the focus is shifted to a younger demographic, youth football players in middle school and high school, the equipment is far less advanced and in a vast majority of cases, has been previously used by …
Bio-Inspired Surface Engineering For Hydrophobicity, Hua Guo
Bio-Inspired Surface Engineering For Hydrophobicity, Hua Guo
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Highly evolved, efficient and sophisticated biological systems can be used as models for scientific innovations. This research explored specific surface structures on plant leaves with respect to their hydrophobicity in the context of the often arid Australian climate. The relationships between leaf surface structures and their hydrophobicity could inform the making of artificial surfaces with specially designed hydrophobicity.
Moderate hydrophobicity and strong surface adhesion were discovered on many study plant leaves. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) revealed that their surface morphologies could be categorized into four groups while their water-repellent mechanisms were considered at an individual species level. Specifically, physical models …
The Two-Phase Arterial Blood Flow With Or Without A Catheter And In The Presence Of A Single Or Multi Stenosis, Ani E. Garcia, Daniel N. Riahi
The Two-Phase Arterial Blood Flow With Or Without A Catheter And In The Presence Of A Single Or Multi Stenosis, Ani E. Garcia, Daniel N. Riahi
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
We consider the problem of blood flow in an artery with or without a catheter and in the presence of single or multi stenosis whose shape is based on the available experimental data for the stenosis in a human’s artery. The presence of stenosis in the artery, which locally narrows portion of the artery, can be a result of fatty materials such as cholesterol in the blood. The use of catheter is important as a standard tool for diagnosis and treatment in patience whose blood flow passage in the artery is affected adversely by the presence of the stenosis within …
