Excerpt:
The mean (average) temperature for 2025 across Tennessee was a bit warmer than normal for most of the state, with the majority of areas reporting temperatures that were 1-2°F above the 1991-2020 NOAA climate normals, with some areas, mostly in the northeastern section of the state within one degree of normal. However, there were a lot of temperature swings throughout the year with below normal temperatures for most regions of the state in January, July, August, and November, while well above normal temperatures were observed in parts of the state in February, April, May, and June [...]
Smart Pireps: Leveraging Technology To Simplify Pilot Weather Reporting In General Aviation, Emma Hellwege
Smart Pireps: Leveraging Technology To Simplify Pilot Weather Reporting In General Aviation, Emma Hellwege
Honors Projects
This honors project examines how emerging aviation technologies can support or automate components of Pilot Weather Reports (PIREPs) to improve reporting accuracy, reduce pilot workload, and increase participation within the general aviation (GA) community. PIREPs provide essential real-time weather observations—such as turbulence, icing, and visibility—that supplement automated systems and enhance situational awareness for pilots, air traffic control, and meteorologists. However, reports are vastly underutilized due to workload constraints, inconsistent training, voice-only submission methods, and technological disparities across the GA fleet.
Through a structured analysis of federal aviation documentation, sensor capabilities, human factors research, and recent advancements in automation, this study …

2025 December - Tennessee Monthly Climate Report, Tennessee Climate Office, East Tennessee State University
Tennessee Climate Office Monthly Reports
Hi All,
December was defined by quite a bit of temperature variability (though the temperature swings resulted in near-normal monthly averages) and an overall dry pattern.
The month started out cooler than normal, with a slight moderation in the second week of the month, before a strong cold front sent temperatures tumbling into the teens or single-digits and wind chills into the single digits or below zero on December 14 and 15 - with many locations stuck in the 20’s or even teens for high temperatures. Following this cold weather, temperatures quickly rebounded into the normal and then well above …
Dynamics, Predictability And Impacts Of Multi-Year La Niña Event, Nahid A. Hasan
Dynamics, Predictability And Impacts Of Multi-Year La Niña Event, Nahid A. Hasan
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
This dissertation investigates the dynamics, predictability, and impacts of multi-year La Niña events. Multi-year La Niña events are referred to as extended periods of unusually cooler tropical Pacific that persist for two or more consecutive winters. These prolonged events can increase the risk of natural hazards such as droughts, floods, and heatwaves in the western US and around the world. Despite their worldwide significance, questions remain about the mechanisms driving their initiation, their predictability, and regional hydroclimate impacts.
The first chapter of the dissertation introduces what scientists currently believe causes them, and how well different types of climate models can …

An Objective Method To Locate Shear Lines During The Northeast Monsoon Season In The Philippines, Lyndon Mark P. Olaguera, John A. Manalo, Jun Matsumoto, Faye Abigail T. Cruz, Jose Ramon T. Villarin
SOSE Affiliate: Manila Observatory
The shear line is a narrow zone of maximum horizontal wind shear, typically identified as a confluence zone of low-level wind streams. Previous studies showed that this system can trigger heavy to extreme rainfall events in the Philippines during the northeast monsoon season. However, a research gap remains in objectively identifying and locating this system. Thus, this study develops a detection method that may be used for monitoring and forecasting the location of shear lines. Results show that the gradient of meridional winds in the y-direction (∂V925hPa/∂y), the boundary layer moisture flux convergence, and the 925 hPa relative vorticity may …
Climatology Of Northeast Winds In Northern And Central California: A New Characterization Of The Diablo Wind, Alana R. Macken
Climatology Of Northeast Winds In Northern And Central California: A New Characterization Of The Diablo Wind, Alana R. Macken
Master's Theses
Diablo winds in northern California are known for driving some of the most destructive wildfires in state history. The Camp Fire of 2018, which caused at least 85 civilian fatalities, is just one example of the devastating outcomes associated with these rapidly developing downslope windstorms. While they are known to occur most frequently from fall through spring, much about the structure, evolution, and full spatial extent of these events remains poorly understood. Most previous studies have focused on a limited number of high-impact cases or have defined events using humidity-based thresholds in isolated regions such as the North Bay. As …

Tennessee Climate Office Monthly Reports
Hi All,
The month of November 2025 averaged warmer than normal by 2-4°F across most of the state. The northeastern corner of TN was closer to average, with a few areas even slightly cooler than normal. Additionally, November was drier than normal for most areas, with the exception of a few parts of the Cumberland Plateau and in East TN where heavier bands of precipitation set up while most of the state recorded only light rainfall.
The main weather and climate story of November 2025 was the early taste of winter that impacted the state November 9-12, which also coincided …

2025 October - Tennessee Monthly Climate Report, Tennessee Climate Office, East Tennessee State University
Tennessee Climate Office Monthly Reports
Hi All,
October 2025 was a quiet month for weather across Tennessee. The major stories included improving drought conditions across the western half of the state and relatively large temperature fluctuations. There were some days with heavy rainfall in West Tennessee but flooding was minimal due to the dry conditions in September. Tennessee experienced some pronounced temperature swings during the month with many areas reaching into the 80’s or even 90’s in the first week of October as well as in the middle of October, and then down into the 20’s or 30’s by the end of the month. This …
The Effect Of Mesoscale Frontal Waves On Landfalling Atmospheric Rivers And Their Associated Precipitation Over The Green River Watershed, Washington, Joseph Michael Riedl
The Effect Of Mesoscale Frontal Waves On Landfalling Atmospheric Rivers And Their Associated Precipitation Over The Green River Watershed, Washington, Joseph Michael Riedl
Dissertations and Theses
In this study, the effect of mesoscale frontal waves (MFWs) on extreme precipitation (EP) in the Upper Green River Watershed (UGRW), Washington is investigated. 205 EP days (>95th percentile) are identified in the UGRW between the years 1980 and 2021. To characterize the range of large-scale meteorological conditions associated with EP days, the self-organizing map (SOM) approach is used to cluster daily integrated water vapor transport (IVT) on EP days. To further diagnose the meteorological drivers, composites of several other diagnostic fields are constructed for each SOM node and the preceding days. Together, these results illustrate common orientations of …
Synoptic-Scale Meteorological Patterns Associated With Extreme Precipitation Over The Contiguous United States And Concomitant Seasonal And Regional Variability, Amy M. Johnson
Dissertations and Theses
Seasonal and spatial variations of synoptic-scale weather patterns concurrent to extreme precipitation days, defined as days above the seasonal 95th percentile of the daily precipitation distribution, are characterized over a 44-year period (1980-2023) for the Contiguous United States (CONUS). Using atmospheric reanalysis data and a grid-cell centered approach, we construct seasonal anomaly composite patterns for sea level-pressure (SLP), integrated water vapor transport, 500 hPa geopotential height (Z500), and 300 hPa wind speed. Atmospheric variables known to be important for extreme precipitation. By interpolating composites for each grid cell onto the same polar coordinate grid relative to the grid cell we …

Stream Temperature Responses To Summer Urban Rain Events Along The Savannah River, Joseph E. Wermter, Vivian L. Turner, Max K. Appelbaum, James M. Shepherd, Jacob Z. Lott
Journal of South Carolina Water Resources
The hydrological urban heat island (HUHI) is a recent facet of the urban heat island (UHI), describing thermal enhancement of bodies of water in response to urbanization. Although the forefront of this work has been studied for large Metropolitan areas, this effect on developing cities is currently unknown. To locally measure and quantify HUHI effects in a developing city, we utilized Multi-Radar Multi Sensor (MRMS) radar-derived rainfall data to estimate rainfall in the Augusta Metropolitan Area (AMA) and the Savannah Metropolitan Area (SMA), two developing communities adjacent to the Savannah River. We analyzed mean temperature trends of two stream gauges …

Multimodel And Multidiagnostic Ensemble-Based Deep Convective Area Forecast For Aviation Operations Using The Global Unified Model And Korean Integrated Model, Yi-June Park, Jung-Hoon Kim, Dan-Bi Lee, Hyun-Joo Choi, Soo-Hyun Kim, Matthias Steiner, Seung Hee Kim
Institute for ECHO Articles and Research
To provide safe and efficient guidance for aircraft operation to avoid deep convective areas (DCAs) in Korea and broader East Asia, we developed a multimodel and multidiagnostic ensemble (MMDE)-based forecast system. This system utilizes two global numerical weather prediction (NWP) models based on the Unified Model (UM) and the Korean Integrated Model (KIM) operated by the Korea Meteorological Administration. To predict hazardous weather conditions, we defined DCAs using ground-based radar mosaic data where the 15-dBZ echo-top height exceeds flight level (FL) 250 (about z = 6.5 km) and FL350 (about z = 9 km). For predictors, we employed a …

2025 September - Tennessee Monthly Climate Report, Tennessee Climate Office, East Tennessee State University
Tennessee Climate Office Monthly Reports
Hi All,
The main weather and climate stories of September 2025 for Tennessee were the hot and dry conditions in West Tennessee that led to rapid drought expansion. While the month started out cool, warmer than normal conditions built back into the state from west to east in the second and third weeks of September. Daytime temperatures were especially high, with many locations in the western half of the state seeing high temperatures that were 5-15°F warmer than normal for this time of the year. This combined with a lack of rainfall over the summer season led to rapid drought …
Exploring The Use Of A Random Forest In Correcting Gfs Tropical Cyclone Landfall Errors, Victoria Grace Maxwell
Exploring The Use Of A Random Forest In Correcting Gfs Tropical Cyclone Landfall Errors, Victoria Grace Maxwell
Theses and Dissertations
While Tropical Cyclone (TC) track forecasting has improved over the years it has been slow. These improvements can be attributed to increased computer capability and better model inputs. Machine learning has been used for forecasting different TC track and intensity. The study here looks to use a Random Forest to predict the TC latitude/longitude “landfall” at 72-hr and quantify improvements to the GFS forecast. Principal Component Analysis was used to reduce the dimensionality of the meteorological variables. Stepwise regression was used to determine the principal components that were important for forecasting landfall. These variables were then tested with a multivariate …

Low-Level Polarimetric Signatures Of Supercells During Ef3+ Tornado Production, Anthony Noah Began
Low-Level Polarimetric Signatures Of Supercells During Ef3+ Tornado Production, Anthony Noah Began
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Most EF3+ tornadoes are produced by supercells. Understanding of microscale features surrounding intense tornado production remains limited. This research aims to determine commonalities in low-level microphysical processes during intense tornado production via polarimetric radar signature assessment with a Python-based algorithm. Polarimetric variables hypothesized to reflect low-level wind profiles such as the differential reflectivity (ZDR) arc and the ZDR–KDP (specific differential phase) separation vector will be investigated. Supercells which produced EF3+ tornadoes will be examined since these tornadoes pose the highest threat. From 2010 to 2024, the United States recorded approximately 19,100 tornadoes which resulted in …
Environmental Controls Of Hail In Quasi-Linear Convective Systems, Cameron A. Barker
Environmental Controls Of Hail In Quasi-Linear Convective Systems, Cameron A. Barker
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
A study of hail occurrence in quasi-linear convective systems (QLCS), as well as severe weather parameters contributing to the likelihood and intensity of hail, is presented. Rapid Refresh (RAP) proximity soundings for 218 QLCS events from 2012 to 2022 are selected to sample QLCS environments near peak intensity. Study objectives are to assess common environmental parameter spaces that favor hail in QLCSs while connecting these findings to results for supercells. Hail occurrence is also examined in terms of synoptic regime.
Six synoptic regimes were identified to support QLCSs with hail, from high shear, low cape (HSLC) to low shear, high …

Adaptive irrigation strategies are crucial for balancing water use, economic viability, and food security in the arid Western United States. However, as a key indicator vital in regulating agricultural productivity and crop irrigation, water use efficiency (WUEc) is becoming increasingly complex to estimate due to climate change. This study explores the critical role of key meteorological drivers, such as maximum temperature (tmax) and vapor pressure deficit (vpd), and their impacts on crop-specific WUEc. Future impacts are also assessed through integrating machine learning models with climate projections from the CMIP6 framework under SSP2–4.5 and SSP5–8.5 scenarios to forecast WUEc trends from …
Evaluation Of Windninja Simulations In Canyons And Complex Terrain, Marc Buchs
Evaluation Of Windninja Simulations In Canyons And Complex Terrain, Marc Buchs
Master's Theses
This study describes a validation of the surface wind model WindNinja conducted over different types of complex terrain. WindNinja is one of many software tools first responders use to better understand wind flow over such terrain. One approach to receive a higher resolution wind field to account for local terrain effects is to downscale numerical weather prediction model output with the help of WindNinja. 2 km resolution Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF) output was used as input for our WindNinja simulations. We tested the surface wind model for two case sites in California characterized by canyons of different terrain …
Interactions Between A High Intensity Wildfire And An Atmopsheric Hydraulic Jump In The Case Of The 2023 Lahaina Fire, Clifford Dw Ehrke
Interactions Between A High Intensity Wildfire And An Atmopsheric Hydraulic Jump In The Case Of The 2023 Lahaina Fire, Clifford Dw Ehrke
Master's Theses
On 8 August 2023, a grass fire that started in the city of Lahaina, Hawai’i, grew into the deadliest wildfire in the United States since 1918. This wildfire offers a unique opportunity to explore the impact of high heat output on an atmospheric hydraulic jump and a downslope wind event. We conducted two WRF-SFIRE simulations to investigate these effects: one incorporating fire–atmosphere feedback and the other without it. We compare these WRF-SFIRE simulations to all available data regarding the fire event, including high resolution satellite data, weather station data from other parts of Maui and the Hawaiian Archipelago, and official …

A Uas-Centered Investigation Of Vorticity Characteristics And Cold Pool Structure Across Forward And Left-Flank Boundaries In Supercells, Mark R. De Bruin
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Supercell internal boundaries are the locus of tornadogenesis; thus, understanding the characteristics of these boundaries, particularly in terms of vorticity, is important for identifying the role they play in tornado formation. Insight into the overall characteristics of internal boundaries and their possible role in tornadogenesis have been driven by studies reliant on numerical modeling-based experiments. Observational studies often neglect above-surface conditions or, when these observations are made, lack the spatial resolution to resolve boundary characteristics. During TORUS (Targeted Observation by Radars and UAS of Supercells) 2019 and TORUS-LItE (TORUS Left-flank Intensive Experiment) 2023, uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) and mobile mesonets …

2025 July - Tennessee Monthly Climate Report, Tennessee Climate Office, East Tennessee State University
Tennessee Climate Office Monthly Reports
Hi All,
The main story for July was the high heat and humidity that spread across the state for the second half of the month. Most counties in the state saw at least 1 day with a heat advisory or extreme heat warning issued by the National Weather Service due to a combination of high temperatures and humidity that sent heat index values above advisory/warning criteria. The western half of the state saw higher heat index values and were impacted by the heat wave for a longer period of time than the eastern half of the state. Some part of …

This study investigates the processes driving interannual variability of rainfall over the western coast of the Philippines during the peak southwest monsoon (SWM) months (July–September) from 1961 to 2022. Specifically, it describes how tropical cyclones (TC), SWM, and TC-enhanced SWM influence SWM rainfall variability. Rainfall measurements from 11 stations along the western coast of the Philippines were classified into three types: direct TC rainfall (PD), indirect TC rainfall (PI), and SWM rainfall (PSM). The yearly contributions of PD, PI, and PSM to SWM rainfall were estimated to be 15.4 %, 33.1 %, and 51.5 %, respectively. Furthermore, four rainfall variability …

2025 June - Tennessee Monthly Climate Report, Tennessee Climate Office, East Tennessee State University
Tennessee Climate Office Monthly Reports
Hi All,
The main story of June 2025 was the first major heat wave of the year that sent temperatures into the mid-to-upper 90’s and heat index values over 100°F for most locations in the state from June 22nd to 28th. This included the first day of the year with a high over 90°F for many parts of the state. The National Weather Service offices covering Tennessee issued heat advisories for most counties in the state for at least 1 day during this period and several areas of West and Middle Tennessee had multiple days in a row with these …

Simulations Of Differential Reflectivity Columns In Quasi-Linear Convective Systems, Devon Jacob Healey
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Much research over the past decade has revealed that dual-polarization radar is a powerful tool in furthering our understanding of severe storm dynamics and subsequently improving warning strategies for these hazardous events. However, there are currently very few studies examining a particularly prolific severe convective storm mode with dual-polarization radar: quasi-linear convective systems (QLCSs). These storms can occur in any season of the year throughout most of the contiguous United States and can have immense societal impacts. Warning for the hazards produced by QLCSs is currently a significant operational challenge, therefore, research is needed to see if applying dual-polarization radar …

Investigating The Role Of Aerosols In Extreme Precipitation Events Along The Gulf Coast Of The U.S.A., Wenjia Cao
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Atmospheric aerosols have been found to influence tropical cyclone (TC) and flood event development. In this study, the Weather Research and Forecasting model is applied to investigate specific microphysical impacts and aerosol sensitivity to heavy precipitation and TC events in the U.S. Gulf Coastal area. The Thompson aerosol-aware scheme with regular and adjusted aerosol concentration scenarios is used to quantify precipitation, wind field, horizontal/vertical structures, and track variations, by aerosol mixing ratio. In general, results for the three storms analyzed (the 2016 Baton Rouge, Louisiana, flood event (Chapter 2); Hurricane Harvey in 2017 (Chapter 3); and an idealized storm event …
Estimating The Future Frequency Of Bonnet Carré Spillway Openings, Kayla Thomas
Estimating The Future Frequency Of Bonnet Carré Spillway Openings, Kayla Thomas
LSU Master's Theses
In the 2010s, the Bonnet Carré Spillway (BCS) in southeastern Louisiana, U.S.A., experienced an unprecedented uptick in openings to mitigate the possibility of flooding, including a record double-opening in 2019. Both the environmental consequences of BCS openings associated with nutrients that run from the Mississippi River into Lake Pontchartrain and the synoptic-scale meteorological conditions that necessitate these openings are poorly understood. With the unexpectedly frequent openings in recent years and the ever-present threat of climate change, it is vital to consider the future shift of synoptic-scale climate patterns and how it can relate to BCS openings. Understanding the potential for …

Schools are a focal point in the lives of everyone in the community, especially teachers, parents, and students. Investigating the connection between these individuals and tornadoes by identifying shortcomings in education, training, and emergency procedures can induce more effective and informed decision-making for future encounters. This study evaluated the inclusivity of tornado protocols for students with disabilities, uncovered where parents prefer their child to shelter in early dismissal situations and clarified how extensively natural hazard education and tornado drills are covered in schools. Two surveys and semi-structured interviews were used to obtain responses from earth science teachers, K-12 guardians, and …
Atmospheric Turbulence Education Effects On Flight Anxiety, Megan A. Hanna
Atmospheric Turbulence Education Effects On Flight Anxiety, Megan A. Hanna
Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the effect of turbulence education on flight anxiety. A pre-post methodology measured students’ anxiety levels before and after a study abroad flight, using an educational video during the pre-flight survey to change their feelings. The Flight Anxiety Situations (FAS) questionnaire assessed anxiety at three survey points: pre-video, post-video, and post-flight. Qualitative analysis using Friedman’s test and the Wilcoxon Signed-rank test, indicated that turbulence education effectively decreased generalized and anticipatory flight anxiety, particularly in non-phobic students. Text analysis of open-ended responses suggested increased scientific knowledge post-video helped students apply technical atmospheric processes to their feelings. Turbulence education was …
