December 2017 marked 50 years since archaeologist Michael J. O’Kelly first observed the solar illumination of the burial chamber in the Neolithic passage tomb at Newgrange during the period of the winter solstice. O’Kelly subsequently recorded direct sunlight entering Newgrange through the ‘especially contrived slit which lies under the roof-box at the outer end of the passage roof’ on 21 December 1969. The discovery of this historic phenomenon, dating back over 5,000 years, captured the public interest and imagination at that time and ever since. In this major article published in the Winter 2017 edition of Archaeology Ireland (date of …

Solving The Rubik's Cube Using Group Theory, Courtney Cooke
Honors Projects
While he was working in his mother's apartment in 1974, the professor of architecture from Budapest, Erno Rubik, had no idea he was inventing one of the most popular toys in history, the Rubik's Cube. As an estimated 350 million Rubik's cubes have been sold, and approximately one in every seven people have played with one (which is about 1 billion people) it is not surprising to see that the algorithm of solving the Rubik's cube has been applied to the eld of mathematics. By using abstract algebra and more specially, group theory, the Rubik's Cube, no matter what the …

Hough transform (HT) is a useful tool for both pattern recognition and image processing communities. In the view of pattern recognition, it can extract unique features for description of various shapes, such as lines, circles, ellipses, and etc. In the view of image processing, a dozen of applications can be handled with HT, such as lane detection for autonomous cars, blood cell detection in microscope images, and so on. As HT is a straight forward shape detector in a given image, its shape detection ability is low in noisy images. To alleviate its weakness on noisy images and improve its …

The notion of neutrosophic N -structure is introduced, and applied it to semigroup. The notions of neutrosophic N -subsemigroup, neutrosophic N -product and ε-neutrosophic N -subsemigroup are introduced, and several properties are investigated. Conditions for neutrosophic N -structure to be neutrosophic N -subsemigroup are provided. Using neutrosophic N -product, characterization of neutrosophic N -subsemigroup is discussed. Relations between neutrosophic N -subsemigroup and εneutrosophic N -subsemigroup are discussed. We show that the homomorphic preimage of neutrosophic N -subsemigroup is a neutrosophic N - subsemigroup, and the onto homomorphic image of neutrosophic N - subsemigroup is a neutrosophic N -subsemigroup.

Evolution Of Superoscillations For Schrödinger Equation In A Uniform Magnetic Field, Fabrizio Colombo, Jonathan Gantner, Daniele C. Struppa
Evolution Of Superoscillations For Schrödinger Equation In A Uniform Magnetic Field, Fabrizio Colombo, Jonathan Gantner, Daniele C. Struppa
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Aharonov-Berry superoscillations are band-limited functions that oscillate faster than their fastest Fourier component. Superoscillations appear in several fields of science and technology, such as Aharonov’s weak measurement in quantum mechanics, in optics, and in signal processing. An important issue is the study of the evolution of superoscillations using the Schrödinger equation when the initial datum is a weak value. Some superoscillatory functions are not square integrable, but they are real analytic functions that can be extended to entire holomorphic functions. This fact leads to the study of the continuity of a class of convolution operators acting on suitable spaces of …

k-nearest neighbors (k-NN), which is known to be a simple and efficient approach, is a non-parametric supervised classifier. It aims to determine the class label of an unknown sample by its k-nearest neighbors that are stored in a training set. The k-nearest neighbors are determined based on some distance functions. Although k-NN produces successful results, there have been some extensions for improving its precision. The neutrosophic set (NS) defines three memberships namely T, I and F. T, I, and F shows the truth membership degree, the false membership degree, and the indeterminacy membership degree, respectively. In this paper, the NS …

An Efficient Image Segmentation Algorithm Using Neutrosophic Graph Cut, Florentin Smarandache, Yanhui Guo, Yaman Akbulut, Abdulkadir Sengur, Rong Xia
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
Segmentation is considered as an important step in image processing and computer vision applications, which divides an input image into various non-overlapping homogenous regions and helps to interpret the image more conveniently. This paper presents an efficient image segmentation algorithm using neutrosophic graph cut (NGC). An image is presented in neutrosophic set, and an indeterminacy filter is constructed using the indeterminacy value of the input image, which is defined by combining the spatial information and intensity information. The indeterminacy filter reduces the indeterminacy of the spatial and intensity information. A graph is defined on the image and the weight for …

In this paper, we develop a new approach to deal with neutrosphic shortest path problem in a network in which each edge weight (or length) is represented as triangular fuzzy neutrosophic number. The proposed algorithm also gives the shortest path length from source node to destination node using ranking function. Finally, an illustrative example is also included to demonstrate our proposed approach.

In this paper, we propose the complex neutrosophic soft set model, which is a hybrid of complex fuzzy sets, neutrosophic sets and soft sets. The basic set theoretic operations and some concepts related to the structure of this model are introduced, and illustrated. An example related to a decision making problem involving uncertain and subjective information is presented, to demonstrate the utility of this model.

In this paper, we introduced a new neutrosophic graphs called complex neutrosophic graphs of type1 (CNG1) and presented a matrix representation for it and studied some properties of this new concept. The concept of CNG1 is an extension of generalized fuzzy graphs of type 1 (GFG1) and generalized single valued neutrosophic graphs of type 1 (GSVNG1).
Entropy In Topological Groups, Part 2, Dikran Dikranjan
Entropy In Topological Groups, Part 2, Dikran Dikranjan
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
Entropy was introduced first in thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, as well as information theory. In the last sixty years entropy made its way also in topology, ergodic theory, as well as other branches of mathematics as algebra, geometry and number theory where dynamical systems appear in one way or another.
Roughly speaking, entropy is a non-negative real number or infinity assigned to a "selfmap" T of a "space" X, where the "space" X can be a topological or uniform space, a measure space, an abstract or topological group (or vector space) or just a set. The "selfmap" T can be, …

This paper describes the importance of Neutrosophy Theory in order to find a method that could solve the uncertainties arising on discursive analysis. The aim of this pilot study is to find a procedure to diminish the uncertainties from public discourse induced, especially, by humans (politicians, journalists, etc.). We consider that Neutrosophy Theory is a sentiment analysis specific case regarding processing of the three states: positive, negative, and neutral. The study is intended to identify a method to answer to uncertainties solving in order to support politician's staff, NLP specialists, artificial intelligence researchers and generally the electors.

The purpose of this paper is to present an e[xtension and alternative of the hybrid method based on Saaty’s Analytical Hierarchy Process and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution method (AHP-TOPSIS), that based on the AHP and its use of pairwise comparisons, to a new method called α -D MCDM-TOPSIS( α -Discounting Method for multicriteria decision making-TOPSIS). The new method overcomes limits of AHP which work only for pairwise comparisons of criteria to any-wise (n-wise) comparisons, with crisp coefficients or with interval-valued coefficients. α-D MCDM-TOPSIS is verified by some examples to demonstrate how it allows for consistency, …

The Value Of A Win: Analysis Of Playoff Structures, Matthew Orsi
Honors Projects in Mathematics
The purpose of this Senior Capstone project is to analyze the distinctions between existing playoff systems. In particular, we are looking to analyze the differences between the standard single-elimination tournament (which the NCAA has used since the inception of the tournament) and other potential options: double-elimination and multiple game series. Popular sports such as Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association all use multiple game series for their playoffs. This project will use probability theory and simulation to determine the likelihood of different seeds winning a championship as well as the expected number of victories by seed in each …
The Existence Of Solutions For A Nonlinear, Fractional Self-Adjoint Difference Equation, Kevin Ahrendt
The Existence Of Solutions For A Nonlinear, Fractional Self-Adjoint Difference Equation, Kevin Ahrendt
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In this work we will explore a fractional self-adjoint difference equation which involves a Caputo fractional difference. In particular, we will develop a Cauchy function for initial value problems and Green's functions for several different types of boundary value problems. We will use the properties of those Green's functions and the Contraction Mapping Theorem to find sufficient conditions for when a nonlinear boundary value problem has a unique solution. We will also investigate the existence of nonnegative solutions for a nonlinear self-adjoint difference that have particular long run behavior.

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
In this paper, we start the study of stochastic processes over the skew field of quaternions. We discuss the relation between positive definite functions and the covariance of centered Gaussian processes and the construction of stochastic processes and their derivatives. The use of perfect spaces and strong algebras and the notion of Fock space are crucial in this framework.

On Benacerraf’S Dilemma, Again, Marco Panza
MPP Published Research
In spite of its enormous influence, Benacerraf’s dilemma admits no standard unanimously accepted formulation. This mainly depends on Benacerraf’s having originally presented it in a quite colloquial way, by avoiding any compact, somehow codified, but purportedly comprehensive formulation (Benacerraf 1973 cf. p. 29).

The Mathematics Of Superoscillations, Yakir Aharonov, Fabrizio Colombo, Irene Sabadini, Daniele C. Struppa, Jeff Tollaksen
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
In the past 50 years, quantum physicists have discovered, and experimentally demonstrated, a phenomenon which they termed superoscillations. Aharonov and his collaborators showed that superoscillations naturally arise when dealing with weak values, a notion that provides a fundamentally different way to regard measurements in quantum physics. From a mathematical point of view, superoscillating functions are a superposition of small Fourier components with a bounded Fourier spectrum, which result, when appropriately summed, in a shift that can be arbitrarily large, and well outside the spectrum. Purpose of this work is twofold: on one hand we provide a self-contained survey of the …

Teaching And Learning Mathematics In The Ar/Vr Environment, Alexander Vaninsky
Publications and Research
This presentation discusses teaching and learning mathematics in augmented (AR) or virtual (VR) reality created by a combination of goggles and earphones. It claims that interactive learning in such an environment is more attractive and efficient. It increases motivation and interest in the subject matter. The approach is underlain by the findings of educational neuroscience considering the learning process as the formation of domains in the brain forming mathematics knowledge centers. The teaching process provides sensory excitation and establishes connections among these and other domains. Hardware and software are available in the market. The suggested approach allows for practical implementation …

Case Study Of Undergraduate Research Projects In Vector Analysis, Alexander Vaninsky, Willy Baez Lara, Madieng Diao, Analilia Mendez
Publications and Research
This paper presents two examples of the undergraduate research projects in vector analysis conducted under the first author’s supervision at one of the community colleges that is an integral part of a large city university. The projects were accomplished by the students pursuing associated degrees in engineering, during their sophomore year. One project was to obtain an explicit formula for the curvature of a curve in plane defined implicitly in rectangular or polar coordinates. Another project was aimed to develop an alternative procedure for finding potential function for a vector field in space based on simultaneous integration. Participation in these …

Sine, Cosine, And Tangent Table: 0 To 360 Degrees, Paul Royster
Department of Mathematics: Class Notes and Learning Materials
In helping with my high school student's math homework, I was astonished to find no trig tables in the 800-page textbook. I was further astonished to find no printable version online that extended beyond 90°.
While most smartphones will tell you the sine of an angle, they will not necessarily tell you the angle for which the sine is x. And since multiple angles may have the same sine (e.g. 59° and 121°), it seems useful to see the numerical progression of the functions in addition to their graphical representation.
Here is a printable sine-cosine-tangent table for all integer angle …
