Triangular Cubic Hesitant Fuzzy Einstein Hybrid Weighted Averaging Operator And Its Application To Decision Making, Florentin Smarandache, Aliya Fahmi, Fazli Amin, Madad Khan, Nasruddin Hassan

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper, triangular cubic hesitant fuzzy Einstein weighted averaging (TCHFEWA) operator, triangular cubic hesitant fuzzy Einstein ordered weighted averaging (TCHFEOWA) operator and triangular cubic hesitant fuzzy Einstein hybrid weighted averaging (TCHFEHWA) operator are proposed. An approach to multiple attribute group decision making with linguistic information is developed based on the TCHFEWA and the TCHFEHWA operators. Furthermore, we establish various properties of these operators and derive the relationship between the proposed operators and the existing aggregation operators. Finally, a numerical example is provided to demonstrate the application of the established approach

U.S. College Students’ Social Network Characteristics And Perceived Social Exclusion: A Comparison Between Drinkers And Nondrinkers Based On Pastmonth Alcohol Use, Sara G. Balestrieri, Graham T. Diguiseppi, Matthew Meisel, Melissa A. Clark, Miles Q. Ott, Nancy P. Barnett Oct 2018

U.S. College Students’ Social Network Characteristics And Perceived Social Exclusion: A Comparison Between Drinkers And Nondrinkers Based On Pastmonth Alcohol Use, Sara G. Balestrieri, Graham T. Diguiseppi, Matthew Meisel, Melissa A. Clark, Miles Q. Ott, Nancy P. Barnett

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

There is a general perception on college campuses that alcohol use is normative. However, nondrinking students account for 40% of the U.S. college population. With much of the literature focusing on intervening among drinkers, there has been less of a focus on understanding the nondrinker college experience. The current study has two aims: to describe the social network differences between nondrinkers and drinkers in a college setting, and to assess perceived social exclusion among nondrinkers. METHOD:First-year U.S. college students (n = 1,342; 55.3% female; 47.7% non-Hispanic White) were participants in a larger study examining a social network of one college …

Asymptotic Quasi-Completeness And Zfc, Mirna Džamonja, Marco Panza Oct 2018

Asymptotic Quasi-Completeness And Zfc, Mirna Džamonja, Marco Panza

MPP Published Research

The axioms ZFC of first order set theory are one of the best and most widely accepted, if not perfect, foundations used in mathematics. Just as the axioms of first order Peano Arithmetic, ZFC axioms form a recursively enumerable list of axioms, and are, then, subject to Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorems. Hence, if they are assumed to be consistent, they are necessarily incomplete. This can be witnessed by various concrete statements, including the celebrated Continuum Hypothesis CH. The independence results about the infinite cardinals are so abundant that it often appears that ZFC can basically prove very little about such cardinals. …

About A Non-Standard Interpolation Problem, Daniel Alpay, Alain Yger

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Using algebraic methods, and motivated by the one variable case, we study a multipoint interpolation problem in the setting of several complex variables. The duality realized by the residue generator associated with an underlying Gorenstein algebra, using the Lagrange interpolation polynomial, plays a key role in the arguments.

Was Frege A Logicist For Arithmetic?, Marco Panza Sep 2018

Was Frege A Logicist For Arithmetic?, Marco Panza

MPP Published Research

The paper argues that Frege’s primary foundational purpose concerning arithmetic was neither that of making natural numbers logical objects, nor that of making arithmetic a part of logic, but rather that of assigning to it an appropriate place in the architectonics of mathematics and knowledge, by immersing it in a theory of numbers of concepts and making truths about natural numbers, and/or knowledge of them transparent to reason without the medium of senses and intuition.

The Chapman Bone Algorithm: A Diagnostic Alternative For The Evaluation Of Osteoporosis, Elise Levesque, Anton Ketterer, Wajiha Memon, Cameron James, Noah Barrett, Cyril Rakovski, Frank Frisch

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Osteoporosis is the most common metabolic bone disease and goes largely undiagnosed throughout the world, due to the inaccessibility of DXA machines. Multivariate analyses of serum bone turnover markers were evaluated in 226 Orange County, California, residents with the intent to determine if serum osteocalcin and serum pyridinoline cross-links could be used to detect the onset of osteoporosis as effectively as a DXA scan. Descriptive analyses of the demographic and lab characteristics of the participants were performed through frequency, means and standard deviation estimations. We implemented logistic regression modeling to find the best classification algorithm for osteoporosis. All calculations and …

Enthymemathical Proofs And Canonical Proofs In Euclid’S Plane Geometry, Abel Lassalle, Marco Panza

MPP Published Research

Since the application of Postulate I.2 in Euclid’s Elements is not uniform, one could wonder in what way should it be applied in Euclid’s plane geometry. Besides legitimizing questions like this from the perspective of a philosophy of mathematical practice, we sketch a general perspective of conceptual analysis of mathematical texts, which involves an extended notion of mathematical theory as system of authorizations, and an audience-dependent notion of proof.

Fast Adjustable Npn Classification Using Generalized Symmetries, Xuegong Zhou, Lingli Wang, Peiyi Zhao, Alan Mishchenko Aug 2018

Fast Adjustable Npn Classification Using Generalized Symmetries, Xuegong Zhou, Lingli Wang, Peiyi Zhao, Alan Mishchenko

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

NPN classification of Boolean functions is a powerful technique used in many logic synthesis and technology mapping tools in FPGA design flows. Computing the canonical form of a function is the most common approach of Boolean function classification. In this paper, a novel algorithm for computing NPN canonical form is proposed. By exploiting symmetries under different phase assignments and higher-order symmetries of Boolean functions, the search space of NPN canonical form computation is pruned and the runtime is dramatically reduced. The algorithm can be adjusted to be a slow exact algorithm or a fast heuristic algorithm with lower quality. For …

Generalized Fock Spaces And The Stirling Numbers, Daniel Alpay, Motke Porat Jun 2018

Generalized Fock Spaces And The Stirling Numbers, Daniel Alpay, Motke Porat

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The Bargmann-Fock-Segal space plays an important role in mathematical physics and has been extended into a number of directions. In the present paper, we imbed this space into a Gelfand triple. The spaces forming the Fréchet part (i.e., the space of test functions) of the triple are characterized both in a geometric way and in terms of the adjoint of multiplication by the complex variable, using the Stirling numbers of the second kind. The dual of the space of test functions has a topological algebra structure, of the kind introduced and studied by the first named author and Salomon.

Examples Of Solving The Wave Equation In The Hyperbolic Plane, Cooper Ramsey May 2018

Examples Of Solving The Wave Equation In The Hyperbolic Plane, Cooper Ramsey

Senior Honors Theses

The complex numbers have proven themselves immensely useful in physics, mathematics, and engineering. One useful tool of the complex numbers is the method of conformal mapping which is used to solve various problems in physics and engineering that involved Laplace’s equation. Following the work done by Dr. James Cook, the complex numbers are replaced with associative real algebras. This paper focuses on another algebra, the hyperbolic numbers. A solution method like conformal mapping is developed with solutions to the one-dimensional wave equation. Applications of this solution method revolve around engineering and physics problems involving the propagation of waves. To conclude, …

I focus on the challenges I faced teaching students who did not share my …

Resistance To Peer Influence Moderates The Relationship Between Perceived (But Not Actual) Peer Norms And Binge Drinking In A College Student Social Network, Graham T. Diguiseppi, Matthew K. Meisel, Sara G. Balestrieri, Miles Q. Ott, Melissa J. Cox, Melissa A. Clark, Nancy P. Barnett May 2018

Resistance To Peer Influence Moderates The Relationship Between Perceived (But Not Actual) Peer Norms And Binge Drinking In A College Student Social Network, Graham T. Diguiseppi, Matthew K. Meisel, Sara G. Balestrieri, Miles Q. Ott, Melissa J. Cox, Melissa A. Clark, Nancy P. Barnett

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

Introduction: Adolescent and young adult binge drinking is strongly associated with perceived social norms and the drinking behavior that occurs within peer networks. The extent to which an individual is influenced by the behavior of others may depend upon that individual’s resistance to peer influence (RPI).

Methods: Students in their first semester of college (N = 1323; 54.7% female, 57% White, 15.1% Hispanic) reported on their own binge drinking, and the perceived binge drinking of up to 10 important peers in the first-year class. Using network autocorrelation models, we investigated cross-sectional relationships between participant’s binge drinking frequency and the perceived …

On Coding For Partial Erasure Channels, Carolyn Mayer May 2018

On Coding For Partial Erasure Channels, Carolyn Mayer

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Error correcting codes have been essential to the technology we use in everyday life in digital storage, wireless communication, barcodes, and much more. Different channel models are used for different types of communication (for example, if information is sent to one person or to many people) and different types of errors. Partial erasure channels were recently introduced to model applications in which some information remains after an erasure event. These remnants of information may be used to increase the chances of successful decoding. We introduce a new partial erasure channel in which partial erasures correspond to individual bit erasures in …

Nonassociative Right Hoops, Peter Jipsen, Michael Kinyon May 2018

Nonassociative Right Hoops, Peter Jipsen, Michael Kinyon

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The class of nonassociative right hoops, or narhoops for short, is defined as a subclass of right-residuated magmas, and is shown to be a variety. These algebras generalize both right quasigroups and right hoops, and we characterize the subvarieties in which the operation x ^^ y = (x/y)y is associative and/or commutative. Narhoops with a left unit are proved to be integral if and only if ^ is commutative, and their congruences are determined by the equivalence class of the left unit. We also prove that the four identities defining narhoops are independent.

This article investigates Rugina's orientation table and gives particular examples for several of its seven models. Leon Walras's Economics of Stable Equilibrium and Keynes's Economics of Disequilibrium are combined in Rugina's orientation table in systems which are s percent stable and 100 ÿ s percent unstable, where s may be 100, 95, 65, 50, 35, 5, and 0. Classical logic and modern logic are united in Rugina's integrated logic, and then generalized in neutrosophic logic.

An Event- And Network-Level Analysis Of College Students’ Maximum Drinking Day, Matthew K. Meisel, Angelo M. Dibello, Sara G. Balestrieri, Miles Q. Ott, Graham T. Diguiseppi, Melissa A. Clark, Nancy P. Barnett

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

Background—Heavy episodic drinking is common among college students and remains a serious public health issue. Previous event-level research among college students has examined behaviors and individual-level characteristics that drive consumption and related consequences but often ignores the social network of people with whom these heavy drinking episodes occur. The main aim of the current study was to investigate the network of social connections between drinkers on their heaviest drinking occasions.

Methods—Sociocentric network methods were used to collect information from individuals in the first-year class (N=1342) at one university. Past-month drinkers (N=972) reported on the characteristics of their heaviest drinking occasion …

"This is Giorgio's Israel last book, which appeared only a few weeks after his untimely death, in September 2015. For many reasons, it can be considered as his intellectual legacy, since it comes back, in a new and organic way, to many of the research topics to which he devoted his life and his many publications, which include several papers in Historia Mathematica. One of these papers, co-authored with M. Menghini, appeared in vol. 25/4, 1998 and was devoted to Poincaré's and Enriques's opposite views on qualitative analysis, which is a theme also dealt with in this book (pp. 117–122)."

Design And Analysis Of Graph-Based Codes Using Algebraic Lifts And Decoding Networks, Allison Beemer Mar 2018

Design And Analysis Of Graph-Based Codes Using Algebraic Lifts And Decoding Networks, Allison Beemer

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Error-correcting codes seek to address the problem of transmitting information efficiently and reliably across noisy channels. Among the most competitive codes developed in the last 70 years are low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, a class of codes whose structure may be represented by sparse bipartite graphs. In addition to having the potential to be capacity-approaching, LDPC codes offer the significant practical advantage of low-complexity graph-based decoding algorithms. Graphical substructures called trapping sets, absorbing sets, and stopping sets characterize failure of these algorithms at high signal-to-noise ratios. This dissertation focuses on code design for and analysis of iterative graph-based message-passing decoders. The …

Indicators For Early Assessment Of Palliative Care In Lung Cancer Patients: A Population Study Using Linked Health Data, Maria Kelly, Katie M. O'Brien, Michael Lucey, Kerri Clough-Gorr, Ailish Hannigan

Department of Mathematics Publications

Analysing linked, routinely collected data may be useful to identify characteristics of patients with suspected lung cancer who could benefit from early assessment for palliative care. The aim of this study was to compare characteristics of newly diagnosed lung cancer patients dying within 30 days of diagnosis (short term survivors) with those surviving more than 30 days. To identify indicators for early palliative care assessment we distinguished between characteristics available at diagnosis (age, gender, smoking status, marital status, comorbid disease, admission type, tumour stage and histology) from those available post diagnosis. A second aim was to examine the association between …

Neutrosophic Soft Rough Graphs With Application, Florentin Smarandache, Muhammad Akram, Hafsa M. Malik, Sundas Shahzadi

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Neutrosophic sets (NSs) handle uncertain information while fuzzy sets (FSs) and intuitionistic fuzzy sets (IFs) fail to handle indeterminate information. Soft set theory, neutrosophic set theory, and rough set theory are different mathematical models for handling uncertainties and they are mutually related. The neutrosophic soft rough set (NSRS) model is a hybrid model by combining neutrosophic soft sets with rough sets. We apply neutrosophic soft rough sets to graphs. In this research paper, we introduce the idea of neutrosophic soft rough graphs (NSRGs) and describe different methods of their construction. We consider the application of NSRG in decision-making problems. In …
