Completeness Of Ordered Fields, James Forsythe Hall
Completeness Of Ordered Fields, James Forsythe Hall
Mathematics
The main goal of this project is to prove the equivalency of several characterizations of completeness of Archimedean ordered fields; some of which appear in most modern literature as theorems following from the Dedekind completeness of the real numbers, while a couple are not as well known and have to do with other areas of mathematics, such as nonstandard analysis. Continuing, we study the completeness of non-Archimedean fields, and provide several examples of such fields with varying degrees of properties, using nonstandard analysis to produce some relatively "nice" (in particular, they are Cantor complete) final examples. As a small detour, …

Approximate Analytical Solutions For Fractional Space- And Time- Partial Differential Equations Using Homotopy Analysis Method, Subir, Das, R. Kumar, P. K. Gupta, Hossein Jafari
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This article presents the approximate analytical solutions of first order linear partial differential equations (PDEs) with fractional time- and space- derivatives. With the aid of initial values, the explicit solutions of the equations are solved making use of reliable algorithm like homotopy analysis method (HAM). The speed of convergence of the method is based on a rapidly convergent series with easily computable components. The fractional derivatives are described in Caputo sense. Numerical results show that the HAM is easy to implement and accurate when applied to space- time- fractional PDEs.
Rethinking Geometrical Exactness, Marco Panza
Rethinking Geometrical Exactness, Marco Panza
MPP Published Research
A crucial concern of early modern geometry was fixing appropriate norms for deciding whether some objects, procedures, or arguments should or should not be allowed into it. According to Bos, this is the exactness concern. I argue that Descartes’s way of responding to this concern was to suggest an appropriate conservative extension of Euclid’s plane geometry (EPG). In Section 2, I outline the exactness concern as, I think, it appeared to Descartes. In Section 3, I account for Descartes’s views on exactness and for his attitude towards the most common sorts of constructions in classical geometry. I also explain in …

Morphogrammatics Of Reflection, Rudolf Kaehr
Morphogrammatics Of Reflection, Rudolf Kaehr
Rudolf Kaehr
Turning back from the studies of morphogrammatics to some open questions of reflectional programming, the recountered problematics might be put into a different light and new methods of handling formal aspects of reflection and reflectionality shall be introduced. Albeit the use of light-metaphors, morphogrammatic reflection is not sketched along the paradigm of optical metaphors. Morphograms are presenting neither propositions nor perceptions able for mirroring (representation). Exercises in defining morphogrammatic retro-grade recursion and reflection schemata are continued from the paper “Sketches to Morphogrammatic Programming”.

Torsion In The Cohomology Of Congruence Subgroups Of Sl (4. Z) And Galois Representations, Avner Ash, Paul E. Gunnells, Mark Mcconnell
Paul Gunnells
We report on the computation of torsion in certain homology theories of congruence subgroups of SL(4,Z). Among these are the usual group cohomology, the Tate–Farrell cohomology, and the homology of the sharbly complex. All of these theories yield Hecke modules. We conjecture that the Hecke eigenclasses in these theories have attached Galois representations. The interpretation of our computations at the torsion primes 2, 3, 5 is explained. We provide evidence for our conjecture in the 15 cases of odd torsion that we found in levels ⩽31.
Spatiotemporal Dynamics In A Lower Montane Tropical Rainforest, Robert Michael Lawton
Spatiotemporal Dynamics In A Lower Montane Tropical Rainforest, Robert Michael Lawton
Doctoral Dissertations
Disturbance in a forest’s canopy, whether caused by treefall, limbfall, landslide, or fire determines not only the distribution of well-lit patches at any given time, but also the ways in which the forest changes over time. In this dissertation, I use a 25 year record of treefall gap formation find a novel and highly patterned process of forest disturbance and regeneration, providing a local mechanism by examining the factors that influence the likelihood of treefall. I then develop a stochastic cellular automaton for disturbance and regeneration based on the analysis of this long term data set and illustrate the potential …
Automated Theorem Prover Axiom Management, Ashley T. Holeman, Ewen Denney
Automated Theorem Prover Axiom Management, Ashley T. Holeman, Ewen Denney
STAR Program Research Presentations
Automated Theorem Provers (ATPs), are computer programs that use collections of axioms, which are logical statements assumed to be true, in order to prove conjectures. NASA uses these programs to verify safety and functional requirements in domains like Guidance, Navigation, and Control. There are about 30 axioms on each major topic including the theory of coordinate systems, elementary arithmetic and linear algebra. These axioms have been created over the duration of many projects and combined into a single file. One task is to manage the axioms by arranging them into logical sections, deleting unnecessary ones and rewriting some into a more …
