Conditionals And Modalities In Constructive Quantum Logics, Juan P. Aguilera, Guillaume Massas Jun 2026

Conditionals And Modalities In Constructive Quantum Logics, Juan P. Aguilera, Guillaume Massas

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We investigate logics that generalize both intuitionistic logic and quantum logic. In earlier work, we introduced Ex-logic, an extension of Holliday's fundamental logic that coincides with the intersection of orthologic and the implication-free fragment of intuitionistic logic. In this paper, we add an implication connective to Ex-logic and axiomatize iEx-logic, the intersection of full intuitionistic logic and orthomodular logic with the implication connective interpreted as the Sasaki hook. As a consequence, we obtain a characterization of the lattice of logics extending iEx-logic as the product of the lattice of intermediate logics and the lattice of orthomodular logics. We also explore …

Quantitatively Hyper-Positive Real Rational Functions Iii, Daniel Alpay, Izchak Lewkowicz Jun 2026

Quantitatively Hyper-Positive Real Rational Functions Iii, Daniel Alpay, Izchak Lewkowicz

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Hyper-Positive Real, matrix-valued, rational functions are associated with absolute stability (the Lurie problem). Here, quantitative subsets of Hyper-positive functions, related through nested inclusions, are introduced. Structurally, this family of functions turns out to be matrix-convex and closed under inversion. A state-space characterization of these functions through a corresponding Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov Lemma, is given. Technically, the classical Linear Matrix Inclusions, associated with passive systems, are here substituted by Quadratic Matrix Inclusions.

Mckinsey-Tarski Algebras And Raney Extensions, G. Bezhanishvili, R. Raviprakash, A. L. Suarez, Joanne Walters-Wayland Mar 2026

Mckinsey-Tarski Algebras And Raney Extensions, G. Bezhanishvili, R. Raviprakash, A. L. Suarez, Joanne Walters-Wayland

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We introduce the notion of Raney morphism between MT-algebras and show that the resulting category is equivalent to the category of Raney extensions. This is done by generalizing the construction of the Funayama envelope of a frame. The resulting notion of the T0-hull of a Raney extension generalizes that of the TD-hull of a frame.

Unitary Rational Functions: The Scaled Quaternion Case, Daniel Alpay, Ilwoo Choo, Mihaela Vajiac Feb 2026

Unitary Rational Functions: The Scaled Quaternion Case, Daniel Alpay, Ilwoo Choo, Mihaela Vajiac

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We develop the theory of minimal realizations and factorizations of rational functions where the coefficient space is a ring of the type introduced in our previous work, the scaled quaternions, which includes as special cases the quaternions and the split quaternions. The methods involved are not a direct generalization of the complex or quaternionic settings, and in particular, the adjoint is not the classical adjoint and we use properties of real Hilbert spaces. This adjoint allows to define the counterpart of unitarity for matrix-rational functions, and we develop the corresponding theories of realizations and unitary factorizations. We also begin a …

Free Probability Theory Over The Scaled Hyperbolic Numbers, Daniel Alpay, Ilwoo Choo Dec 2025

Free Probability Theory Over The Scaled Hyperbolic Numbers, Daniel Alpay, Ilwoo Choo

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper, we introduce a notion of free probability over the scaled hyperbolic numbers. Scaled hypercomplex numbers {Dt} t∈R are constructed as sub-structures of scaled hypercomplex numbers {Ht} t∈R under the scales (or, the moments) of the set R of real numbers. We show that if t < 0, then the classical free probability theory covers our free probability on {Dt} t< 0; if t > 0, then our free probability on {Dt} t>0 is represented by the free probability over the classical hyperbolic numbers D = D1; and if t = 0, then the free probability on D0 is actually over the …

The Kaczmarz Algorithm In Hilbert C*-Modules, Daniel Alpay, Chad Berner, Eric S. Weber Nov 2025

The Kaczmarz Algorithm In Hilbert C*-Modules, Daniel Alpay, Chad Berner, Eric S. Weber

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The Kaczmarz algorithm in Hilbert spaces is a classical iterative method for stably recovering vectors from inner product data. In this paper, we extend the algorithm to the setting of Hilbert C*-modules and establish analogues of its effectiveness in both finite-dimensional and stationary cases. Consequently, we demonstrate that continuous families of elements in a Hilbert space can be uniformly recovered using the Kaczmarz algorithm. Additionally, we develop a normalized Cauchy transform for continuous families of measures and use it to provide sufficient conditions under which standard frames in Hilbert C(X)-modules can be generated by the Kaczmarz …

Probabilities With Values In Scaled Hyperbolic Numbers, Daniel Alpay, Ilwoo Choo Jun 2025

Probabilities With Values In Scaled Hyperbolic Numbers, Daniel Alpay, Ilwoo Choo

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper, we introduce a notion of a probabilistic measure which takes values in t-scaled hyperbolic numbers for t ∈ R, with a system of axioms generalizing directly Kolmogorov’s axioms. i.e., we establish a suitable measure theory in the set Dt of all t-scaled hyperbolic numbers for arbitrarily fixed t ∈ R.

Scaled Global Operators And Fueter Variables On Non-Zero Scaled Hypercomplex Numbers, Daniel Alpay, Ilwoo Choo, Mihaela Vajiac

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper we describe the rise of global operators in the scaled quaternionic case, an important extension from the quaternionic case to the family of scaled hypercomplex numbers Ht, t ∈ R , of which the H−1 = H is the space of quaternions and H1 is the space of split quaternions. We also describe the scaled Fueter-type variables associated to these operators, developing a coherent theory in this field. We use these types of variables to build different types of function spaces on Ht. Counterparts of the Hardy space and of the …

Q-Rational Functions And Interpolation With Complete Nevanlinna–Pick Kernels, Daniel Alpay, Paula Cerejeiras, Uwe Kaehler, Baruch Schneider Sep 2024

Q-Rational Functions And Interpolation With Complete Nevanlinna–Pick Kernels, Daniel Alpay, Paula Cerejeiras, Uwe Kaehler, Baruch Schneider

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper we introduce the concept of matrix-valued q-rational functions. In comparison to the classical case, we give different characterizations with principal emphasis on realizations and discuss algebraic manipulations. We also study the concept of Schur multipliers and complete Nevanlinna–Pick kernels in the context of q-deformed reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces and provide first applications in terms of an interpolation problem using Schur multipliers and complete Nevanlinna–Pick kernels.

Frames And Spaces For Distributive Quasi Relation Algebras And Distributive Involutive Fl-Algebras, Andrew Craig, Peter Jipsen, Claudette Robinson Aug 2024

Frames And Spaces For Distributive Quasi Relation Algebras And Distributive Involutive Fl-Algebras, Andrew Craig, Peter Jipsen, Claudette Robinson

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Analogous to atom structures for relation algebras, we define partially ordered frames and prove they are duals for complete perfect distributive quasi relation algebras and distributive involutive FL-algebras. We then extend this dual representation to all algebras and their corresponding frames with a Priestley topology.

For relation algebras up to size 16 it has been determined which algebras are representable by binary relations. We compute all finite distributive quasi relation algebras up to 8 elements and provide representations for some of them.

On The Structure Of Balanced Residuated Partially Ordered Monoids, Stefano Bonzio, José Gil-Férez, Peter Jipsen, Adam Přenosil, Melissa Sugimoto

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

A residuated poset is a structure ⟨A,⩽, ·, \, /, 1⟩ where ⟨A,⩽⟩ is a poset and ⟨A, ·, 1⟩ is a monoid such that the residuation law x · y ⩽ z ⇐⇒ x ⩽ z/y ⇐⇒ y ⩽ x\z holds. A residuated poset is balanced if it satisfies the identity x\x ≈ x/x. By generalizing the well-known construction of Płonka sums, we show that a specific class of balanced residuated posets can be decomposed into such a sum indexed by the set of positive idempotent elements. Conversely, given a semilattice directed system of residuated posets equipped with two …

S-Preclones And The Galois Connection SPol–SInv, Part I, Peter Jipsen, Erkko Lehtonen, Reinhard Pöschel

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We consider S-operations f : An → A in which each argument is assigned a signum s ∈ S representing a “property” such as being order- preserving or order-reversing with respect to a fixed partial order on A. The set S of such properties is assumed to have a monoid structure reflecting the behaviour of these properties under the composition of S-operations (e.g., order-reversing composed with order-reversing is order- preserving). The collection of all S-operations with prescribed properties for their signed arguments is not a clone (since it is not closed under arbitrary identification of arguments), …

Schur Analysis Over The Unit Spectral Ball, Daniel Alpay, Ilwoo Choo Jun 2024

Schur Analysis Over The Unit Spectral Ball, Daniel Alpay, Ilwoo Choo

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We begin a study of Schur analysis when the variable is now a matrix rather than a complex number. We define the corresponding Hardy space, Schur multipliers and their realizations, and interpolation. Possible applications of the present work include matrices of quaternions, matrices of split quaternions, and other algebras of hypercomplex numbers.

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper, we study the regularity of R-differentiable functions on open connected subsets of the scaled hypercomplex numbers {Ht}t∈R by studying the kernels of suitable differential operators {∇t}t∈R, up to scales in the real field R.

Spacetime Geometry Of Acoustics And Electromagnetism, Lucas Burns, Tatsuya Daniel, Stephon Alexander, Justin Dressel Feb 2024

Spacetime Geometry Of Acoustics And Electromagnetism, Lucas Burns, Tatsuya Daniel, Stephon Alexander, Justin Dressel

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Both acoustics and electromagnetism represent measurable fields in terms of dynamical potential fields. Electromagnetic force-fields form a spacetime bivector that is represented by a dynamical energy–momentum 4-vector potential field. Acoustic pressure and velocity fields form an energy–momentum density 4-vector field that is represented by a dynamical action scalar potential field. Surprisingly, standard field theory analyses of spin angular momentum based on these traditional potential representations contradict recent experiments, which motivates a careful reassessment of both theories. We analyze extensions of both theories that use the full geometric structure of spacetime to respect essential symmetries enforced by vacuum wave propagation. The …

As usual, let RL denote the ring of real-valued continuous functions on a completely regular frame L. Let βL and λL denote the Stone- Čech compactification of L and the Lindelöf coreflection of L, respectively. There is a natural way of associating with each sublocale of βL two ideals of RL, motivated by a similar situation in C(X). In [12], the authors go one step further and associate with each sublocale of λL an ideal of RL in a manner similar to one of the ways one does it for sublocales of βL. The intent in this paper …

Certain Invertible Operator-Block Matrices Induced By C*-Algebras And Scaled Hypercomplex Numbers, Daniel Alpay, Ilwoo Choo Oct 2023

Certain Invertible Operator-Block Matrices Induced By C*-Algebras And Scaled Hypercomplex Numbers, Daniel Alpay, Ilwoo Choo

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The main purposes of this paper are (i) to enlarge scaled hypercomplex structures to operator-valued cases, where the operators are taken from a C*-subalgebra of an operator algebra on a separable Hilbert space, (ii) to characterize the invertibility conditions on the operator-valued scaled-hypercomplex structures of (i), (iii) to study relations between the invertibility of scaled hypercomplex numbers, and that of operator-valued cases of (ii), and (iv) to confirm our invertibility of (ii) and (iii) are equivalent to the general invertibility of (2×2)-block operator matrices.

New Perspectives On Semi-Primal Varieties, Alexander Kurz, Wolfgang Poiger, Bruno Teheux Sep 2023

New Perspectives On Semi-Primal Varieties, Alexander Kurz, Wolfgang Poiger, Bruno Teheux

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

We study varieties generated by semi-primal lattice-expansions by means of category theory. We provide a new proof of the Keimel-Werner topological duality for such varieties and, using similar methods, establish its discrete version. We describe multiple adjunctions between the variety of Boolean algebras and the variety generated by a semi-primal lattice-expansion, both on the topological side and explicitly algebraic. In particular, we show that the Boolean skeleton functor has two adjoints, both defined by taking certain Boolean powers, and we identify properties of these adjunctions which fully characterize semi-primality of an algebra. Lastly, we give a new characterization of canonical …

Many-Valued Coalgebraic Logic: From Boolean Algebras To Primal Varieties, Alexander Kurz, Wolfgang Poiger Sep 2023

Many-Valued Coalgebraic Logic: From Boolean Algebras To Primal Varieties, Alexander Kurz, Wolfgang Poiger

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

We study many-valued coalgebraic logics with primal algebras of truth-degrees. We describe a way to lift algebraic semantics of classical coalgebraic logics, given by an endofunctor on the variety of Boolean algebras, to this many-valued setting, and we show that many important properties of the original logic are inherited by its lifting. Then, we deal with the problem of obtaining a concrete axiomatic presentation of the variety of algebras for this lifted logic, given that we know one for the original one. We solve this problem for a class of presentations which behaves well with respect to a lattice structure …

Discrete Wiener Algebra In The Bicomplex Setting, Spectral Factorization With Symmetry, And Superoscillations, Daniel Alpay, Izchak Lewkowicz, Mihaela Vajiac Jun 2023

Discrete Wiener Algebra In The Bicomplex Setting, Spectral Factorization With Symmetry, And Superoscillations, Daniel Alpay, Izchak Lewkowicz, Mihaela Vajiac

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper we present parallel theories on constructing Wiener algebras in the bicomplex setting. With the appropriate symmetry condition, the bicomplex matrix valued case can be seen as a complex valued case and, in this matrix valued case, we make the necessary connection between bicomplex analysis and complex analysis with symmetry. We also write an application to superoscillations in this case.

Commutators On Fock Spaces, Daniel Alpay, Paula Cerejeiras, Uwe Kähler, Trevor Kling Apr 2023

Commutators On Fock Spaces, Daniel Alpay, Paula Cerejeiras, Uwe Kähler, Trevor Kling

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Given a weighted ℓ2 space with weights associated with an entire function, we consider pairs of weighted shift operators, whose commutators are diagonal operators, when considered as operators over a general Fock space. We establish a calculus for the algebra of these commutators and apply it to the general case of Gelfond–Leontiev derivatives. This general class of operators includes many known examples, such as classic fractional derivatives and Dunkl operators. This allows us to establish a general framework, which goes beyond the classic Weyl–Heisenberg algebra. Concrete examples for its application are provided.

The Structure Of Locally Integral Involutive Po-Monoids And Semirings, José Gil-Férez, Peter Jipsen, Siddhartha Lodhia

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We show that every locally integral involutive partially ordered monoid (ipo-monoid) A = (A,⩽, ·, 1,∼,−), and in particular every locally integral involutive semiring, decomposes in a unique way into a family {Ap : p ∈ A+} of integral ipo-monoids, which we call its integral components. In the semiring case, the integral components are semirings. Moreover, we show that there is a family of monoid homomorphisms Φ = {φpq : Ap → Aq : p ⩽ q}, indexed on the positive cone (A+,⩽), so that the structure of A can be recovered as a glueing R ΦAp of its integral …

Ideals Of Functions With Compact Support In The Integer-Valued Case, Themba Dube, Oghenetega Ighedo, Batsile Tlharesakgosi

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

For a zero-dimensional Hausdorff space X, denote, as usual, by C(X, ℤ) the ring of continuous integer-valued functions on X. If fC(X, ℤ), denote by Z(f) the set of all points of X that are mapped to 0 by f. The set CK(X; ℤ) = {f ∈ C(X; ℤ) | clX(X \ Z(f)) is compact} is the integer-valued analogue of the ideal of functions with compact support in C(X). By first working in the category of locales and then interpreting …

Fock And Hardy Spaces: Clifford Appell Case, Daniel Alpay, Kamal Diki, Irene Sabadini

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper, we study a specific system of Clifford–Appell polynomials and, in particular, their product. Moreover, we introduce a new family of quaternionic reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces in the framework of Fueter regular functions. The construction is based on a general idea which allows us to obtain various function spaces by specifying a suitable sequence of real numbers. We focus on the Fock and Hardy cases in this setting, and we study the action of the Fueter mapping and its range.

Algorithmic Correspondence For Relevance Logics, Bunched Implication Logics, And Relation Algebras Via An Implementation Of The Algorithm Pearl, Willem Conradie, Valentin Goranko, Peter Jipsen Oct 2021

Algorithmic Correspondence For Relevance Logics, Bunched Implication Logics, And Relation Algebras Via An Implementation Of The Algorithm Pearl, Willem Conradie, Valentin Goranko, Peter Jipsen

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The non-deterministic algorithmic procedure PEARL (acronym for ‘Propositional variables Elimination Algorithm for Relevance Logic’) has been recently developed for computing first-order equivalents of formulas of the language of relevance logics LR in terms of the standard Routley-Meyer relational semantics. It succeeds on a large class of axioms of relevance logics, including all so called inductive formulas. In the present work we re-interpret PEARL from an algebraic perspective, with its rewrite rules seen as manipulating quasi-inequalities interpreted over Urquhart’s relevant algebras, and report on its recent Python implementation. We also show that all formulae on which PEARL succeeds are canonical, i.e., …

Unary-Determined Distributive ℓ -Magmas And Bunched Implication Algebras, Natanael Alpay, Peter Jipsen, Melissa Sugimoto

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

A distributive lattice-ordered magma (dℓ-magma) (A,∧,∨,⋅) is a distributive lattice with a binary operation ⋅ that preserves joins in both arguments, and when ⋅ is associative then (A,∨,⋅) is an idempotent semiring. A dℓ-magma with a top ⊤ is unary-determined if x⋅y=(x⋅⊤∧y)∨(x∧⊤⋅y). These algebras are term-equivalent to a subvariety of distributive lattices with ⊤ and two join-preserving unary operations p, q. We obtain simple conditions on p, q such that x⋅y=(px∧y)∨(x∧qy) is associative, commutative, idempotent and/or has an identity element. This generalizes previous results on the structure of doubly idempotent semirings and, in the case when the …

The Structure Of Finite Commutative Idempotent Involutive Residuated Lattices, Peter Jipsen, Olim Tuyt, Diego Valota

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We characterize commutative idempotent involutive residuated lattices as disjoint unions of Boolean algebras arranged over a distributive lattice. We use this description to introduce a new construction, called gluing, that allows us to build new members of this variety from other ones. In particular, all finite members can be constructed in this way from Boolean algebras. Finally, we apply our construction to prove that the fusion reduct of any finite member is a distributive semilattice, and to show that this variety is not locally finite.

Conjunctive Join-Semilattices, Charles N. Delzell, Oghenetega Ighedo, James J. Madden

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

A join-semilattice L with top is said to be conjunctive if every principal ideal is an intersection of maximal ideals. (This is equivalent to a first-order condition in the language of semilattices.) In this paper, we explore the consequences of the conjunctivity hypothesis for L, and we define and study a related property, called “ideal conjunctivity,” which is applicable to join-semilattices without top. Results include the following: (a) Every conjunctive join-semilattice is isomorphic to a join-closed subbase for a compact T1-topology on max L, the set of maximal ideals of L, and under weak hypotheses …
