The theory of Gauss composition of integer binary quadratic forms provides a very useful way to compute the structure of ideal class groups in quadratic number fields. In addition to that, Gauss composition is also important in the problem of representations of integers by binary quadratic forms. In 2001, Bhargava discovered a new approach to Gauss composition which uses 2x2x2 integer cubes, and he proved a composition law for such cubes. It is possible to completely describe the representation of any integer by binary quadratic forms of a given discriminant when the discriminant’s class group is a Boolean group (also known as an elementary abelian 2-group). For other discriminants, we can partially describe the representation using the structure of the class group. The goal of the present project is to find whether any class group with 32 elements and a primitive positive definite discriminant is a Boolean group. We find that no such class group is Boolean.

Surfaces have long been a topic of interest for scholars inside and outside of mathe- matics. In a topological sense, surfaces are spaces which appear flat on a local scale. Surfaces in this sense have a restricted set of properties, including the behavior of loops around a surface, codified in the fundamental group.

All but 3 surface groups have been shown to embed into a class of groups called right-angled Artin groups. The method through which these embeddings are created places large restrictions on all homomorphisms from surface groups to right-angled Artin groups.

Many studies have been done using task-based learning within different mathematics courses. Within the field of trigonometry, task-based learning is lacking. The following research aimed to create engaging, mathematically rich tasks that meet the standards for the current trigonometry course at Utah State University and align with the State of Utah Core Standards for 7th through 12th grades. Four lessons were selected and developed based on the alignment of standards, the relevance to the remainder of the trigonometry course, and the relevance to courses beyond trigonometry. Discriminant ideals are defined for an algebra R with central subalgebra C and trace tr : R → C. They are indexed by positive integers and more general than discriminants. Usually R is required to be a finite module over C. Unlike the abundace of work on discriminants, there is hardly any literature on discriminant ideals. Given two quadratic forms $Q_1, Q_2$ over a $p$-adic field $K$ in $n$ variables, we consider the pencil $\mathcal{P}_K(Q_1, Q_2)$, which contains all nontrivial $K$-linear combinations of $Q_1$ and $Q_2$. We define $D$ to be the maximal dimension of a subspace in $K^n$ on which $Q_1$ and $Q_2$ both vanish. We define $H$ to be the maximal number of hyperbolic planes that a form in $\mathcal{P}_K(Q_1, Q_2)$ splits off over $K$. We will determine which values for $(D, H)$ are possible for a nonsingular pair of quadratic forms over a $p$-adic field $K$.

In 2007, Nora Ganter and Mikhail Kapranov defined the categorical trace, which they used to define the categorical character of a 2-representation. In 2008, Kate Ponto defined a shadow functor for bicategories. With the shadow functor, Dr. Ponto defined the bicategorical trace, which is a generalization of the symmetric monoidal trace for bicategories. How are these two notions of trace related to one another? We’ve used bicategorical traces to define a character theory for 2-representations, and the categorical character is an example.

Computational commutative algebra has become an increasingly popular area of research. Central to the theory is the notion of a Gröbner basis, which may be thought of as a nonlinear generalization of Gaussian elimination. In 2019, Nagel and Römer introduced FI- and OI-modules over FI- and OI-algebras, which provide a framework for studying sequences of related modules defined over sequences of related polynomial rings. In particular, they laid the foundations of a theory of Gröbner bases for certain classes of OI-modules. In this dissertation we develop an OI-analog of Buchberger's algorithm in order to compute such Gröbner bases, as well …

During the past 36 years, some research in noncommutative algebra has been driven by attempts to classify AS-regular algebras of global dimension four. Such algebras are often considered to be noncommutative analogues of polynomial rings. In the 1980s, Artin, Tate, and Van den Bergh introduced a projective scheme that parametrizes the point modules over a graded algebra generated by elements of degree one. In 2002, Shelton and Vancliff introduced the concept of line scheme, which is a projective scheme that parametrizes line modules.

An SLₖ-frieze is a bi-infinite array of integers where adjacent entries satisfy a certain diamond rule. SL₂-friezes were introduced and studied by Conway and Coxeter. Later, these were generalized to infinite matrix-like structures called tilings as well as higher values of k. A recent paper by Short showed a bijection between bi-infinite paths of reduced rationals in the Farey graph and SL₂-tilings. We extend this result to higher kby constructing a bijection between SLₖ-tilings and certain pairs of bi-infinite strips of vectors in ℤᵏ called paths. Topology furnishes us with many commutative rings associated to finite groups. These include the complex representation ring, the Burnside ring, and the G-equivariant K-theory of a space. Often, these admit additional structure in the form of natural operations on the ring, such as power operations, symmetric powers, and Adams operations. We will discuss two ways of constructing Adams operations. The goal of this work is to understand these in the case of the Burnside ring.

A skew-polynomial ring is a polynomial ring over a field, with one indeterminate x, where one must apply an automorphism to commute coefficients with x. It was first introduced by Ore in 1933 and since the 1980s has been used to study skew-cyclic codes. In this thesis, we present some properties of skew-polynomial rings and some new constructions of skew-cyclic codes. The dimension of a skew-cyclic code depends on the degree of its generating skew polynomial. However, due to the skew-multiplication rule, the degree of a skew polynomial can be smaller than its number of roots and hence tricky to …

In 1869, prompted by his work in differential equations, Sophus Lie wondered about categorizing what he called “closed systems of commutative transformations,” while around the same time, Wilhelm Killing’s work on non-Euclidean geometry encountered related topics. As mathematicians recognized this as a division of abstract algebra, the area became known as “continuous transformation groups," but we now refer to them as Lie groups.

The theory of random graphs describes the interplay between probability and graph theory: it is the study of the stochastic process by which graphs form and evolve. In 1959, Erdős and Rényi defined the foundational model of random graphs on n vertices, denoted G(n, p) ([ER84]). Subsequently, Frank and Strauss (1986) added a Markov twist to this story by describing a topological structure on random graphs that encodes dependencies between local pairs of vertices ([FS86]). The general model that describes this framework is called the exponential random graph model (ERGM).

We derive a trace formula that can be used to study representations of a finite group G induced from arbitrary representations of a subgroup Γ. We restrict our attention to finite-dimensional representations over the field of complex numbers. We consider some applications and examples of our trace formula, including a proof of the well-known Frobenius reciprocity theorem.

For any ordinary elliptic curve E over a field with non-zero characteristic p, there exists an elliptic curve E over the ring of Witt vectors W(E) for which we can lift the Frobenius morphism, called the canonical lift. Voloch and Walker used this theory of canonical liftings of elliptic curves over Witt vectors of length 2 to construct non-linear error-correcting codes for characteristic two. Finotti later proved that for longer lengths of Witt vectors there are better lifts than the canonical. Let R be a domain. We look at the algebraic and integral closure of a polynomial ring, R[x], in its power series ring, R[[x]]. A power series α(x) ∈ R[[x]] is said to be an algebraic power series if there exists F (x, y) ∈ R[x][y] such that F (x, α(x)) = 0, where F (x, y) ̸ = 0. If F (x, y) is monic, then α(x) is said to be an integral power series. We characterize the units of algebraic and integral power series. The image of $\PSL(2,\reals)$ under the irreducible representation into $\PSL(7,\reals)$ is contained in the split real form $G_{2}^{4,3}$ of the exceptional Lie group $G_{2}$. This irreducible representation therefore gives a representation $\rho$ of a hyperbolic triangle group $\Gamma(p,q,r)$ into $G_{2}^{4,3}$, and the \textit{Hitchin component} of the representation variety $\Hom(\Gamma(p,q,r),G_{2}^{4,3})$ is the component of $\Hom(\Gamma(p,q,r),G_{2}^{4,3})$ containing $\rho$.

The most famous functional equation f(x+y)=f(x)+f(y) known as Cauchy's equation due to its appearance in the seminal analysis text Cours d'Analyse (Cauchy 1821), was used to understand fundamental aspects of the real numbers and the importance of regularity assumptions in mathematical analysis. Since then, the equation has been abstracted and examined in many contexts. One such examination, introduced by Stanislaw Ulam and furthered by Donald Hyers, was that of stability. We provide a combinatorial interpretation of the frequency of any irreducible representation of Sn in representations of Sn arising from group actions on words. Recognizing that representations arising from group actions naturally split across orbits yields combinatorial interpretations of the irreducible decompositions of representations from similar group actions. The generalization from group actions on words to group actions on matrices gives rise to representations that prove to be much less transparent. We share the progress made thus far on the open problem of determining the irreducible decomposition of certain representations of Sm × Sn arising from group actions on matrices.

Given a group $\Gamma$ with presentation $\relgroup{\scr{\scr{A}}}{\scr{R}}$, a natural question, known as the word problem, is how does one decide whether or not two words in the free group, $F(\scr{\scr{A}})$, represent the same element in $\Gamma$. In this thesis, we study certain aspects of geometric group theory, especially ideas published by Gromov in the late 1980's. We show there exists a quasi-isometry between the group equipped with the word metric, and the space it acts on. We show that for any finitely generated non-abelian subgroup H of a limit group L, there exists a finite-index subgroup K which is fully residually H. This generalizes the result of Wilton that limit groups admit local retractions. We also show that for any finitely generated subgroup of a limit group, there is a finite-dimensional representation of the limit group which separates the subgroup in the induced Zariski topology. As a corollary, we establish a polynomial upper bound on the size of the quotients used to separate a finitely generated subgroup in a limit group. This generalizes results of Louder, …

Bousfield and Kan traditionally formulated their homotopy spectral sequence over a simplicial set X resolved with respect to a ring R. By considering an adequate category of ring spectra, one can take a ring spectrum E, create from it a functor of a triple on the category of simplicial sets, and build a cosimplicial simplicial set EX. The homotopy spectral sequence can then be formed over such cosimplicial spaces by a similar construction to the original.
