With the recent advent of large submesoscale drifter deployments, interpreting the timeseries of kinematic properties (KP) - divergence, vorticity, shear, and normal strain rates observed therein is a pressing issue. The evolution equations for the four KP are derived from the two-dimensional momentum conservation equations. The resulting equations, a nonlinear coupled system of ordinary differential equations, capture the submesoscale motion of drifters along fixed ocean surfaces, with time and space scales on the order of days and kilometers. This thesis is an expository exploration of the paper Unbounded Derivations in Algebras Associated with Monothetic Groups. Monothetic groups will be utilized to create a minimal system that gives rise to two C*-algebras, and once we have these algebras, unbounded derivations will be able to be defined on them. These derivations are able to be classified and decomposed into ”special” derivations, and these decompositions help simplify the comparisons between derivations on different algebras. In particular, we emphasize the classification, covariance properties, innerness and approximate innerness, and the lifting behavior of these derivations.

We investigate the spatial dynamics of a population modeled by a general discrete integrodifference equation incorporating k-generation long-term memory. While classical models rely solely on the im- mediately preceding state to determine population growth and dispersal, introducing multiple past states causes the associated evolution operator to lose compactness. Consequently, standard fixed- point theorems are insufficient to prove the existence of traveling wave solutions. We overcome this difficulty by constructing a time-independent moving frame operator and employing the monotone iteration method. Modern LPBF processes have integrated monitoring systems that capture the light emissions per layer for quality assurance. The average kissing number is defined as the supremum over all sphere packings of the value: two times the number of tangencies divided by the number balls in the packing. In this paper, we present a survey of the literature about bounding the average kissing number, beginning with the first non-trivial results, through the most up-to-date bounds. We then turn our focus to binary sphere packings: those which contain spheres of two different radii. We improve upon known bounds for the average kissing number for binary sphere packings in three-dimensions and find exact bounds for many packings.

Financial markets often undergo abrupt structural changes driven by political, economic, and geopolitical events, leading to substantial volatility. Detecting such change-points is crucial for identifying structural breaks, improving risk management, and enhancing forecasting performance in financial time series. This study proposes a Bayesian change-point detection framework that incorporates both the t-shrinkage prior and the Horseshoe shrinkage prior. These priors enforce strong regularization on successive differences in mean parameters, enabling the identification of piecewise constant structures in time series data. This thesis investigates the construction and homological properties of the homotopy Lie algebra π(R) of a commutative local ring (R,m,k). Drawing upon the theoretical framework of differential graded (DG) algebras, we first establish the theory of minimal free resolutions and other standard topics in homological algebra. Mathieu-Zhao subspaces are a generalization of ideals in an algebra and were introduced by Wenhua Zhao in connection to the Jacobian conjecture and its variants. These subspaces have interesting properties, and often the problem of classification is hard. In this thesis, we investigate the structure of Mathieu-Zhao subspaces of the cartesian product of integers modulo powers of a prime p, Zpr × Zps . We will give a complete classification of the subgroups, maximal subgroups, Mathieu-Zhao subspaces, and maximal Mathieu-Zhao subspaces in these rings.

Fuchs’ problem asks which groups can arise as the group of units of a ring. Although the finite cyclic case has been completely classified, much less is known in the infinite setting. This thesis contributes to this problem by investigating quasi-cyclic. (Pr¨ufer) groups and their finite direct products. We show that for every odd prime p, there is no commutative ring R such that R×∼= Cp∞. This obstruction arises from characteristic restrictions and the algebraic structure of finite fields. We give a constructive proof that every weakly negative definite plumbing tree can be transformed into a negative definite one by a finite sequence of Neumann moves. The argument combines Neumann’s plumbing calculus with the diagonalization algorithm of Duchon, Eisenbud, and Neumann, which extracts the eigenvalues of the framing matrix directly from the combinatorics of the tree. We show that any positive eigenvalues are supported on linear branches and can be eliminated systematically via controlled applications of Neumann moves. This provides an explicit algorithm reducing weakly negative definite plumbing trees to negative definite ones.

Nematocysts are specialized cellular organelles found in all cnidarians, including corals and jellyfish, as well as in some single-celled protists such as dinoflagellates. These organelles display remarkable diversity in morphology and function, playing roles in prey capture and defense. The firing of a nematocyst is one of the fastest accelerations in nature, yet the underlying physical mechanisms remain not fully understood. In this work, we address key questions: how sufficient force is generated to overcome the fluid boundary layer, whether fluid–structure interaction models can reproduce observed dynamics, and what mechanisms trigger discharge.

In this thesis, we find products that are modular forms of level 13 whose Fourier coefficients satisfy certain congruences. These products are constructed in terms of integer powers of Klein forms and the Dedekind eta function. The products that are modular forms for Γ1 (13) have vectors of exponents that are elements of a bounded polytope. A parameterization for this polytope allows us to find a complete set of products that are modular forms for Γ1 (13). We investigate the combinatorial properties of the characteristic polynomial $\phi_\mathcal{H}\ev{t}$ of a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$, in particular, its coefficients. Due to a classical result of Jacobi, the generating function of closed walks at a vertex $u$ in a graph $G$ is determined by the rational function $\phi_{G-u}(t) / \phi_G(t)$. The connection between closed walks of $G$ and its characteristic polynomial has a known elegant proof via an application of Viennot's Heaps of Pieces framework, where cycles are taken as pieces and the concurrence relation is sharing a vertex. This mixed-methods action research study investigated the influence of instructional strategies shown to improve students’ procedural and conceptual understanding in a rational expressions and equations unit in Advanced Algebra II. The instructional strategies used in the study include comparing, self-explaining, and exploring before instruction. The students (N=27) completed a pre-test and a post-test, both of which were followed by questions asking students to justify their responses on two questions. Davenport posed the problem of determining a condition on the minimum modulus $m_0$ in a finite distinct covering system that would imply that the sum of the reciprocals of the moduli in the covering system is bounded away from 1. In 1973, P.~Erd\H os and J.~Selfridge indicated that they believed that $m_0$ > 4 would suffice. We provide a proof that this is the case in Chapter 2. An $n$-vertex graph $G$ is \textit{hamiltonian} if it contains a length $n$ cycle as a subgraph. A stronger notion of hamiltoncity is pancyclicity. A graph $G$ is \textit{pancyclic} if $G$ contains a cycle of length $k$ for every $3\leq k \leq n$. Dirac's classical result on hamiltonicity states that if an $n$-vertex graph $G$ has minimum degree $\delta(G)\geq \frac{n}{2}$, then $G$ is hamiltonian. Under the same minimum degree condition as Dirac, J. A. Bondy showed that $G$ must also be pancyclic or the exceptional graph $K_{\frac{n}{2}, \frac{n}{2}}$. This dissertation explores a variety of extremal problems in spectral graph theory, hypergraph Tur\'an theory in the $\ell_2$-norm, and Lin-Lu-Yau Ricci curvature. We begin by studying the maximization of linear combinations of eigenvalues in relation to the adjacency matrix of a graph. For a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices, we order its eigenvalues $\lambda_1 \geq \dots \geq \lambda_n$. First, we study a generalization of the maximum spread. Specifically, we consider the $(i,j)$-spread, defined as $\lambda_{i+1}-\lambda_{n-j}$, and aim to maximize that quantity over all simple graphs on $n$ vertices.
