Moving Horizon Estimation To Assimilate Snow And Soil Moisture Data Into The Hbv Hydrological Model, Rodolfo Alvarado Montero, Dirk Schwanenberg, Peter Krahe, Aynur Şensoy
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
We present a variational data assimilation approach based on a Moving Horizon Estimation (MHE) applied to the HBV hydrological model. This framework enables the modification of the model inputs precipitation and temperature as well as the model states soil moisture, upper zone storage and lower zone storage. It considers data products for snow cover, snow water equivalent and soil moisture and observed streamflow. The performance of the framework is evaluated for three test sites: i) the data–dense catchment of the upper Main River (2419 km2), Germany, for which the HBV model already produces excellent results, ii) a comparable upstream catchment …

Short-Term Management Of Hydropower: Definition, Assessment And Disposal Of Operational Flexibility, Divas Karimanzira, Dirk Schwanenberg, Chris Allen
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Modern hydroelectric power systems are largely characterized by variability and uncertainty in water resource obligations. The growing number of operational obligations for flood control, navigation, environmental obligations and ancillary services (including load balancing requirements for renewable resources) further the need to quantify sources uncertainty. The variations caused by these - factors require the hydropower system to have enough up and downward flexibility for control technologies such as dynamic optimal control load-following, unit commitment, automatic generation, to be effective. Therefore, it is increasingly important to adopting operational flexibility to better manage uncertainty and balancing reserves. The objective of this paper is …

Impact Of El Niño Southern Oscillation On Monsoon Rainfall In Bhima Basin, Central India, Dhyan Singh Arya, Mohamed Gareeballa Abdall, Asmita Ramkrishna Murumkar
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The analysis of the effects of ENSO phenomenon on monsoon rainfall of the Bhima River basin located in Central India was investigated using 10x10 degree gridded monsoon rainfall during 1951-2003 and data of four ENSO indices (SOI, MEI, Niño 3.4 and DMI). Data of ENSO indices were divided into three seasons and only statistically significantly correlation was found between monsoon rainfall and monsoon season ENSO indices. Analysis also shows that the monsoon rainfall is positively correlated with SOI index whereas negatively correlated with all other indices. A significant change in the regional climate after 1976 has been reported in many …

Simulation Of Shoreline Changes Along Muthalapozhy Harbour, India, Dhyan Singh Arya, Santosh Kori, A M. Vaidya
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
A study of Muthalapozhy fishing harbour, located in south India, was conducted for simulating shoreline changes using LITPACK modelling tool. The analysis shows that the estimated advancement in shoreline is of the order of 45 m/year initially, which gradually reduces to 25 m/year. It was also found that the coastline advances more during the south-west monsoon (i.e. June to September) season. Simulation of breakwaters shows that the length of the breakwater should be increased by 200 m for south breakwater and 70 m for north breakwater to keep the channel operational without dredging till 2016. The results of the simulated …

Examining Flow Paths In Bunter Sediments In Thuringian Basin, Thomas Fischer, Cindy Kunkel, Dmitri Naumov, Reinhard Gaupp, Olaf Kolditz
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
We would like to present a study on the Thuringian Basin, a large area in central Germany. Within this basin exist areas with very different interesting geo- and hydrological properties. We set up models and simulations for four subdomains within the basin, which describe different depositional environments - Eolian, Fluvial, Sandflat and Lacustrine. Researchers would like to investigate which paths is the water taking in the subsurface and how fast it is moving. The aim of this study is to gain knowledge about flow paths within these four model areas with regard to their architectural design. First simulation results suggest …

Practical-Oriented Pressure Sensor Placement For Model-Based Leakage Location In Water Distribution Networks, Eduard Bonada, Jordi Meseguer, Josep M. Mirats
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
In order to bring remarkable benefits to operation and management of water networks, the analysis of sensed data can be used to locate water leaks using of a model-based methodology. However, the number of sensors installed is usually limited because of budget constraints and hence a strategy for optimizing their number and placement is required. This optimization is tightly coupled to the performance of the real-time model-based leakage diagnosis operation and hence the former should consider the requirements of the latter: (1) high distinguishability among all potential leaks to be detected; and (2) strong robustness in front of model-reality mismatches …

Manantali is a reservoir located in Mali, along the Senegal River, controlling about 50% of the total water flow of this river. Manantali is an annual reservoir, used to regulate the flow in the face of the extremely variable seasonal climate of the region. Manantali is mainly managed for agricultural and hydropower purposes, and its benefits are shared among Mali, Mauritania, and Senegal, the countries that participate to the project. The reservoir has been operative for about 10 years now, exceeding the planned capacity of hydroelectric production and irrigable land surface. The economic benefits due to the reservoir come at …

Using Multi-Objective Optimization To Maximize Multiple Benefits For Sustainable Drainage Design, Jo-Fai Chow, Dragan A. Savić, David Fortune, Zoran Kapelan, Netsanet Mebrate
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
For many years, drainage design was mainly about providing sufficient network capacity. This traditional approach had been successful with the aid of computer software and technical guidance. However, the drainage design criteria had been evolving due to rapid population growth, urbanisation, climate change and increasing sustainability awareness. Sustainable drainage systems that bring benefits in addition to water management have been recommended as better alternatives to conventional pipes and storages. Although the concepts and good practice guidance had already been communicated to decision makers and public for years, network capacity still remains a key design focus in many circumstances while the …

Leakage Localization In Virtual District Metered Areas With Differential Evolution, David Steffelbauer, Markus Günther, Markus Neumayer, Daniela Fuchs-Hanusch
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Leakages in water distribution systems (WDS) can lead to supply interruptions, contaminations and economic losses. Hence finding leaks before they cause severe problems is a crucial task for water utilities. To identify the existence of leaks, night flow measurements in district-metered areas (DMA) are common practice. Therefore, the entire system has to be subdivided in hydraulically separated partial networks. However, many utilities do not want to lose the hydraulic redundancy of their system and hence search for other solutions to identify and allocate leaks. In our research, the effects of leakages on the hydraulic behaviour of WDS are utilized to …
Modeling Of River Flow For The Reservoir Routing, Nader Jandaghi
Modeling Of River Flow For The Reservoir Routing, Nader Jandaghi
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Modeling of flow was made for Central Iran conditions on the example of river Hablerud where water reservoir is planning. Forms of dangerous flood hydrographs are very different because of different precipitation regimes. Practically it is impossible obtain typical design hydrograph for the reservoir routing. The storm precipitations and consequent floods can take place during any within-year interval, when water storage can be different with different probability. Therefore there is necessity to research a big amount of scenarios respecting possible combinations of flood hydrographs and water reservoir storages before floods for estimation of probability of damage. Observed hydrographs (30 years) …

Soft Sensing The Potential Amount Of Calcium Carbonate Precipitate In Drinking Water Distribution Infrastructure And Warm Water Household Appliances, Dirk Vries, Joost Van Summeren, Benjamin Van Den Akker, Alex Van Der Helm, Ignaz Worm, Peter Van Thienen
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
A soft sensor is developed to predict the potential amount of precipitation of calcium carbonate (CCPP) in warm water household devices and scaling or corrosive behavior in water distribution networks. With the aid of a water supply network model, it is shown that the soft sensor is able to predict CCPP levels at pre-specified downstream nodes using only measurements at a limited set of upstream nodes. Furthermore, the soft sensor consists of a data assimilation algorithm to provide for best estimates of the CCPP and confidence intervals.

International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Management of a water supply system from the point of view of the conjunctive use of water sources is a very complex problem whose solution is not just obtained using analytical models but also through a negotiation process among stakeholders and in which Public Bodies have a main role. For these reasons, this problem has been addressed using conservative approaches based on simulation models or simulation – linear optimization models parameterized using few parameters. These approaches have certain strengths but also certain drawbacks or constraints. In general these conservative approaches are already covered by existing generalized modelling tools (i.e. Aquator, …
Flow Control By Water Reservoir In Conditions Of Torrential Floods, Vitaly Ilinich
Flow Control By Water Reservoir In Conditions Of Torrential Floods, Vitaly Ilinich
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Majority of water reservoirs are located in conditions of torrential floods. Difficulty of flow control by such water reservoirs consists in next: different requirements can take place in same within-year intervals during different years. Irrigation requests the big water storage in reservoir, but during the same time a low water level of the reservoir is more preferred for safe drafts during possible catastrophic flood. Accordingly, main aim of the research is search of profitable and safe rules of flow control by water reservoir. The aim has required of solving of next problems: 1) to choose a duration of within-year interval …

Remote Sensing Data Assimilation In Water Quality Numerical Model Of Eagle Creek Reservoir Using Ensemble Kalman Filter Method, Amir Javaheri, Meghna Babbar-Sebens
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Numerical models are used as effective tools for simulating complex processes in aquatic systems, such as hydrodynamic and water quality processes. The accuracy of the model is reliant on the multiple model parameters and variables which need to be calibrated and regularly updated to reproduce changing conditions accurately. Different sources of observations such as remote sensing data or in-situ monitoring technologies can improve the model accuracy by providing benefits of individual monitoring technology within the model updating process. Remote sensing technology can provide the spatially dense surface temperature of water body, while in-situ technology is able to prepare more frequent …

The Effect Of Flood Reduction And Water Conservation Of Decentralized Rainwater Management System, Dong Geun Kwak, Moo Young Han
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Climate change and increase of surface runoff by urbanization caused the urban flooding. Therefore, a sustainable new paradigm is required to recover sound water circulation and overcome the limitations of the existing water management system vulnerable to flooding. Recently Rainwater management is widely known and its legal obligation is strengthened to improve the control capacity for flooding reduction and water conservation in urban areas. Multipurpose DRMS(Decentralized Rainwater Management System) is a new paradigm proposed and recommended by NEMA(National Emergency Management Agency) for both flood control and water conservation. In this study, a flood prone area in Suwon of South Korea …

Currently, achieving appropriate operative performance of water infrastructure has become a high priority in urbanized areas. Particularly, providing reliable sewerage service is central for human well-being and its development (Kleidorfer, et al. 2013). Having that wastewater system management is an increasingly complex task due to a number of hardly predictable factors (e.g. deterioration of system components and climate variability), recent research efforts have been focusing on developing methods to identify optimum proactive rehabilitation and maintenance strategies, some of which are based on the identification of the sewerage structures in most need of attention. To meet such a goal, different forecast …

Spectral Clustering And Support Vector Classification For Localizing Leakages In Water Distribution Networks – The Icewater Project Approach, Antonio Candelieri, Dante Conti, Davide Soldi, Francesco Archetti
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
This paper presents a framework based on hydraulic simulation and machine learning for supporting Water Distribution Network (WDN) managers in localizing leakages, while reducing time and costs for investigation, intervention and rehabilitation. As a first step, hydraulic simulation is used to run different leakage scenarios by introducing a leak on each pipe, in turn, and varying its severity. As output of each scenario run, pressure and flow variations in correspondence of the actual monitoring points into the WDN, and with respect to the faultless model, are stored. Scenarios clustering is aimed at grouping together leaks generating similar effects, in terms …

Vulnerability Assessment Of Water Distribution Systems Using Directed And Undirected Graph Theory, Kegong Diao, Raziyeh Farmani, Guangtao Fu, David Butler
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Vulnerability assessment is a promising approach to identifying critical components of complex systems. In such systems, critical components could be crucial links and strategic locations for management and control. Managing those components better could, in turn, improve or reinforce a system’s resilience to shock events. However, fully comprehensive vulnerability assessments cannot be guaranteed as enumerating all possible shock events in complex systems is computationally intensive and almost infeasible. Consequently, the important role of some components might be neglected. This paper explores the feasibility of using a dual approach vulnerability assessment for water distribution systems (WDSs). Specifically, complex network analysis (e.g. …

The sound flood risk management needs more and more effective information systems. In addition to flood risk management planning, the past floods in Finland have proved that up-to-date risk information is essential in emergencies. Therefore in addition to the water system forecasts and flood warnings, the information on potential exposed elements and flood damages are playing a significant role in maintaining an overview of the national flood situation. The national flood information system of Finland, established in 2006 and extended since 2010, brings together the essential information on floods under a single user interface. At the Finnish Environment Institute SYKE, …

Thermal discharge from industrial outfalls is categorized into two major classes based on their density. First class is the effluent that has a higher density than that of the ambient water body. The second class is the effluent that has a lower density than that of the ambient water body. Due to the effect of several factors such as tides, waves, winds, river discharges, thermal effluents etc., the mixing characteristics of OTEC (Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion) thermal plume is much complicated. In this study we try to identify the mixing and dispersion characteristics of coastal waters to consider their physical …

The regimen of environmental flows (EF) must be included as terms of environmental demand in the management of water resources. Even though there are numerous methods for the computation of EF, the criteria applied at different steps in the calculation process are quite subjective whereas the results are fixed values that must be meet by water planners. This study presents a friendly-user tool for the assessment of the probability of compliance of a certain EF scenario with the natural regimen in a semiarid area in southern Spain. 250 replications of a 25-yr period of different hydrological variables (rainfall, minimum and …

A key issue in basin and dam management is the correct estimation of accumulated rainfall (observed as well as forecasted) over the catchment (over the characteristic concentration time for critical short-term management, and over longer time periods to anticipate rainfall situations). In this work we present a platform for basin and dam management, called WiBasin, which integrates different sources of precipitation (both observed and forecasted) in a continuous time series of hourly rainfall accumulation fields, having the best precipitation estimation available at each time step. Optimal rainfall estimates used for the past time steps are based on a geostatistical approach …

Hydrologic information is generated and published by many government, research, commercial and citizen groups around the world. The formats and protocols used to share the data are heterogeneous, with little agreement about semantics of hydrologic measurements, description of hydrologic features, or metadata content. A broad consensus on hydrologic data sharing formats is needed to ensure that the information can be reliably discovered, interpreted, accessed and integrated. This has been the focus of the Hydrology Domain Working Group (Hydro DWG), established in 2009 as a joint working group of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). It …
