There is a growing need for consistency across the publishing, discovering, integrating and access to scientific datasets, such as water quality data. Such datasets may have varying formats and service interfaces. The Network Common Data Form (NetCDF) is both a software package and a data format for producing array-oriented scientific data, which is commonly used to exchange data, including water quality data. NetCDF datasets are also published through service interfaces using the THREDDS data server. Alternatively water quality datasets can be encoded with standard XML formats such as WaterML 2.0, which can be published with services such as the Open …

Santa Catarina Island bays (SCI bays) has a great economic and social importance in the region. With more than 700.000 habitants in its surroundings, besides touristic and fishery activities, it represents approximately 70% of the Brazilian bivalve shellfish production. In order to understand processes controlling the water quality and food availability, relevant for the shellfish production, it is unquestionably important to understand the main hydrodynamics patterns of SCI Bay. Thus, a hydrodynamic assessment study of the SCI bays was carried out using the numerical model MOHID. The model was implemented using bathymetric information obtained from Brazilian nautical charts, two tide …

Cloud computing is the latest advancement in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) that provides computing as a service or delivers computation, software, data access, storage service without end-user knowledge of the physical location and system configuration. Cloud computing, service oriented architecture and web geographic information systems are new technologies for development of the cloud computing application for water resources modelling and optimization. The cloud application is deployed and tested in a distributed computer environment running on three virtual machines (VMs). The cloud application has five web services for: (1) spatial data infrastructure – 1 (SDI), (2) SDI – 2, (3) …
A Particle Dispersion Model For Analysis Of Two-Dimensional Mixing In Open Channels, Il Won Seo, In Hwan Park
A Particle Dispersion Model For Analysis Of Two-Dimensional Mixing In Open Channels, Il Won Seo, In Hwan Park
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Pollutant mixing in natural rivers is analyzed by using the two-dimensional depth-averaged advection-dispersion model (2D ADE) for rapid completion of the vertical mixing. The dispersion term in the 2D ADE follows Taylor’s assumption (Taylor, 1954; Fischer et al., 1979) which can be applied in the Taylor period. However, most open channel flow has long initial period which makes the skewed concentration distribution due to the unbalance between the shear flow advection and the vertical mixing (Chatwin, 1970). Therefore, the non-Fickian dispersion model is necessary to compensate the limitations of the 2D ADE model. In this research, the two-dimensional particle dispersion …
Separation Of Soil Evaporation And Vegetation Transpiration By Modis Data For Central And Northern China, Tingting Li, Jinhui Jeanne Huang
Separation Of Soil Evaporation And Vegetation Transpiration By Modis Data For Central And Northern China, Tingting Li, Jinhui Jeanne Huang
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Evapotranspiration(ET) plays a crucial role in the hydrologic system. To estimate evapotranspiration quantitatively in a large scale, remote sensing data has been used in a number of models and shows its applicability in the estimation of evapotranspiration. In this paper, evapotranspiration for central and northern China was derived from MODIS data. In arid and semi-arid regions, soil evaporation can be considered as the minimum water requirement for bare area, while evapotranspiration can be considered as the minimum water demand for the area covered by vegetation. Hence the separation of soil evaporation and vegetation transpiration is valuable for efficient water resources …

Flooding in urban areas can cause significant property damage and human injury. Recent extreme precipitation events in the Toronto area have highlighted the need for enhanced warning systems to inform decision making prior to a storm’s arrival. To improve the accuracy and lead time of flood forecasting, Computational Hydraulics International and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority have developed a high resolution, deterministic, physically-based remote-sensing real-time flood forecasting and web-based decision support system, and applied it to the Don River and Etobicoke Creek watersheds. Using PCSWMM Real-Time, NEXRAD radar data, US EPA SWMM5, HTML5 and Google Maps the system forecasts …

Reconstruction Of Paleo-Hydrologic Data For Vulnerability Assessment Of Water Resources Systems, Saman Razavi, Amin Elshorbagy, Howard Wheater, David Sauchyn
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Tree-ring chronologies are a rich source of information of past climate-driven non-stationarities in hydrologic variables. They are typically directly related to available water in respective years, thereby providing a basis for paleo-hydrology reconstruction. This study investigates the time series of tree-ring chronologies, with the objective of identifying the spatiotemporal patterns and extents of non-stationarities, which are essentially representations of past “climate changes”. This study also generates ensembles of moving-average streamflow time series for the centuries prior to the period of observational record. The major headwater tributaries of the Saskatchewan River basin (SaskRB), the main source of surface water in the …

Harmonization Of Vocabularies For Water Data, Simon J.D. Cox, Jonathan Yu, Bruce A. Simons
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Observational data encodes values of properties associated with a feature of interest, estimated by a specified procedure. For water the properties are physical parameters like level, volume, flow and pressure, and concentrations and counts of chemicals, substances and organisms. Water property vocabularies have been assembled at project, agency and jurisdictional level. Organizations such as EPA, USGS, CEH, GA and BoM maintain vocabularies for internal use, and may make them available externally as text files. BODC and MMI have harvested many water vocabularies alongside others of interest in their domain, formalized the content using SKOS, and published them through web interfaces. …

Web-Based Engine For Discovery Of Observations Using Landscape Units, Haowen Xu, Abbas Ali Amir, Marian Muste
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Investigations of natural resources processes realted to the water cycle are best studied using a commensurate landscape unit for the spatial extent of the process. Consequently, the capability to efficiently delineate the watershed extent along with the main hydrological characteristics and behavior of the river network and its drainage area is essential. The watershed search engine discussed in the present paper is designed to identify various observations acquired in the upstream drainage area of the watershed from a point specified by the user. The point can be selected on or outside the stream network using a web mapping interface. The …
River Water Quality Modelling In Developing A Catchment Water Safety Plan, Jose Vieira, Jose Pinho
River Water Quality Modelling In Developing A Catchment Water Safety Plan, Jose Vieira, Jose Pinho
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The primary aim of a catchment water safety plan is to reduce risks within the catchment to protect the quality of drinking water sources at the point of abstraction. Even where effective arrangements for catchment management and control have been implemented, unexpected deterioration in raw water quality can pose a risk to treated drinking water quality. Thus potential sources of pollution impacting the abstraction point should be identified and monitored. An important part of any catchment management strategy includes implementation of raw water monitoring programmes, targeted at the most likely microbiological challenges to water treatment. When combined with good monitoring …

A Spatial-Temporal Downscaling Approach To Construction Of Rainfall Intensity-Duration-Frequency Relations In The Context Of Climate Change, Van-Thanh-Van Nguyen, Myeong-Ho Yeo
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
This paper proposes a spatial-temporal downscaling approach to construction of the intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) relations at a local site in the context of climate change and variability. More specifically, the proposed approach is based on a combination of a spatial downscaling method to link large-scale climate variables given by General Circulation Model (GCM) simulations with daily extreme precipitations at a site and a temporal downscaling procedure to describe the relationships between daily and sub-daily extreme precipitations based on the scaling General Extreme Value (GEV) distribution. The feasibility and accuracy of the suggested method were assessed using rainfall data available at eight …

Applicability Of A Flood Forecasting Method Utilizing Global Satellite Information To An Insufficiently-Gauged River Basin: A Case Of A River Basin In The Philippines, Mamoru Miyamoto, Makoto Ono, Toshio Okazumi, Seishi Nabesaka, Yoichi Iwami
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Currently, basin-wide flood monitoring and warning systems are being implemented sequentially in river basins of the Philippines, which suffer from severe floods. The Cagayan River basin is among them draining the area of 27,280km2, where five rainfall and water level gauges are installed for the purpose of flood monitoring and warning. Despite the installed monitoring system, an operational flood forecasting model based on physical processes has not been performed for this basin. IFAS, a distributed hydrological model developed by ICHARM, was applied to the Cagayan River basin as a flood forecasting model. One of its notable functions is the capability …

Short-Term Reservoir Optimization By Stochastic Optimization To Mitigate Downstream Flood Risks, Dirk Schwanenberg, Fernando Mainardo Fan, Steffi Naumann, Julio Kuwajima, Rodolfo Alvarado Montero, Alberto Assis Dos Reis
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
An important objective of the operation of multi-purpose reservoirs is the mitigation of flood risks in downstream river reaches. Under the assumptions of reservoirs with finite storage volumes, a key factor for its effective use during flood events is the proper timing of detention measures under consideration of forecast uncertainty. Operational flow forecasting systems support this task by providing deterministic or probabilistic inflow forecasts and decision support components to assess optimum release strategies. We focus on the decision support component and propose a deterministic optimization and its extension to an adaptive multi-stage stochastic optimization. These techniques are used to compute …

Integration Of Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm And Support Vector Machine For Hourly Typhoon Rainfall Forecasting, Bing-Chen Jhong, Gwo-Fong Lin
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
During typhoon periods, accurate hourly rainfall forecasts are extremely important. A new typhoon rainfall forecasting model that integrates multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) with support vector machines (SVM) is presented in this paper. Apart from the rainfall data, the meteorological variables are also considered. An application to high- and low-altitude meteorological stations has shown that the proposed model yields the best performance as compared to other models. Results indicate that meteorological variables are helpful. The proposed model significantly improves hourly typhoon rainfall forecasting, especially for the long lead time forecasting. Moreover, the optimal combination of inputs is determined by the proposed …

Automatic Frequency-Based Flood Forecast From Numerical Weather Prediction Using A Service-Oriented Architecture, Ang Zhang, Tiejian Li, Haiyun Shi, Wang Fu, Jiaye Li
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Destructive floods occurred more frequently in mountainous regions in China in recent years. However, the meteorological and hydrological station network in such regions is usually poor, and no long-series observations are available. Therefore, it is difficult to determine the hydrological parameters for flood discharge and stage forecast. This paper aims to propose an automatic frequency-based flood forecast framework from numerical weather prediction (NWP) using a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). The proposed framework has 4 main steps. First, historical flood discharge is simulated by using a distributed hydrological model and satellite-derived rainfall dataset (e.g., the CMORPH and the TRMM), and the …

We present the design, implementation and operational use of a short-term optimization approach for the operational water management of the Twentekanalen canal system for navigation and water resources management. The system was originally designed for navigation and its construction had been completed in 1938. In the past decades, it also became increasingly important for the regional water management. In summer periods, the system provides the region with fresh water and helps to drain the area otherwise. The short-term optimization is implemented in the Operational Monitoring System for the National Regulated Water Systems for advising the operating staff on the operation …

Prediction Of Hydrological Models’ Uncertainty By A Committee Of Machine Learning-Models, Nagendra Kayastha, Dimitri P. Solomatine, Durga Lal Shrestha
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
This study presents an approach to combine uncertainties of the hydrological model outputs predicted from a number of machine learning models. The machine learning based uncertainty prediction approach is very useful for estimation of hydrological models' uncertainty in particular hydro-metrological situation in real-time application [1]. In this approach the hydrological model realizations from Monte Carlo simulations are used to build different machine learning uncertainty models to predict uncertainty (quantiles of pdf) of the a deterministic output from hydrological model . Uncertainty models are trained using antecedent precipitation and streamflows as inputs. The trained models are then employed to predict the …

The Contribution Of Fine Scale Atmospheric Numerical Models In Improving The Quality Of Hydraulic Modelling Outputs, Rabia Merrouchi, Dalila Loudyi, Mohamed Chagdali
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The atmospheric numerical models have known great advances with the ongoing development of numerical weather prediction and computing resources. The spatial and temporal resolution of the global atmospheric models has improved and therefore, the accuracy and reliability of their results have substantially increased. Emphasis was made on the improvement of models dynamics and physical aspects, but also on data assimilation and input data diversification using new numerical schemes and new physical parameterizations that better assess the small-scale weather phenomena. However, these models were not able to overcome their physical limitations and therefore, some small-scale processes are far from being thoroughly …

Application Of Numerical Modelling For Conceptualizing Abstraction Rate Control In A Well Field Under Complex Boundary Conditions, Sebastian Handl, Ernest Mayr, Tobias Gauster, Reinhard Perfler
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
This paper aims at presenting a concept for regulating water abstraction from a well field which ensures an efficient exploration of river filtrate while complying with defined minimum residence time of inflowing water. Being located on an island between a river and an attendant channel, the investigated well field consists of eight radial collector wells aligned parallel to the river flow direction. The water-level in the river is kept comparatively constant due to a downstream hydropower plant. In the channel, the water level is controlled by two weirs. Following a defined hydrograph with an amplitude of about one meter, the …

International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Estuaries play an important role in exchanging water and providing a navigational pathway for ships. These zones are very sensitive and vulnerable to any interventions in coastal dynamics. Almost major of these inlets experience coastal problems such as severe erosion, and accretion. Rosetta promontory is an example of this environment. It suffers from many coastal problems as erosion problem along the coastline and siltation problem inside the inlet. It is due to lack of water and sediment resources as a side effect of constructing the Aswan High dam. The shoaling of the inlet leads to hindering the navigation process of …

An Ensemble Approach For Typhoon Runoff Simulation With Perturbed Rainfall Forecasts In Taiwan, Lan Yu, Lloyd Hock Chye Chua, Dong-Sin Shih
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Under the background of demand for accurate and reliable flood forecasting, various methodologies are used to model floods. However, not all the phases of the hydrograph can be predicted by any models, even though the global optimum may be reached. In order to exploit the distinct information provided by different models, an ensemble approach is proposed to improve the forecasting accuracy and reliability. The ensemble precipitation estimates from a Weather Research Forecasting (WRF) model were used to as inputs to model the rainfall-runoff process in Taiwan. A Dynamic Evolving Neural-Fuzzy Inference System was applied to combining the predictions of the …

Data Assimilation And Multidimensional Model Coupling On The Adour Catchment, South-West Of France, Sébastien Barthélémy, Sophie Ricci, Nicole Goutal, Etienne Le Pape, Olivier Thual
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
This study focuses on the hydrodynamic modelling of the tidally influenced “Adour maritime” catchment located in South-West of France. The local SPC is in charge of operational flood-forecasting and for that purpose, the 1D hydraulic software MASCARET developed at EDF is used. Due to various sources of uncertainties on the hydraulic parameters and hydrological forcing, the free-run is imperfect and should be corrected for improved forecast of extreme events. An Ensemble Kalman Filter algorithm was implemented on top of the hydraulic model using the OpenPalm coupler to assimilate hourly water level in-situ data from observing stations. The water-level and discharge …
Experimental Design For Model Discrimination And Precise Parameter Estimation In Wds Analysis, Giovanna Darvini
Experimental Design For Model Discrimination And Precise Parameter Estimation In Wds Analysis, Giovanna Darvini
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
In water distribution system (WDS) analysis, the initial stages of model assembling, which involve collecting basic WDS data (network topology, asset data, etc.), demand allocation and validation or correction of gross input data errors, are important precursors for calibration of the network. During these first steps one must define which model of the network is the most suitable one for a particular application, as the final results and conclusions usually depend on the model used to perform the simulations and provide the interpretation of the analyzed problem. Sometimes, it is not possible to make a proper choice based solely on …

International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Microwave remote sensing has high potential for soil moisture retrieval. However, the efficient retrieval of soil moisture depends on optimally choosing the soil moisture retrieval parameters. In this study first the initial evaluation of SMOS L2 product is performed and then four approaches regarding soil moisture retrieval from SMOS brightness temperature are reported. The radiative transfer equation based tau-omega rationale is used in this study for the soil moisture retrievals. The single channel algorithms (SCA) using H polarisation is implemented with modifications, which includes the effective temperatures simulated from ECMWF (downscaled using WRF-NOAH Land Surface Model (LSM)) and MODIS. The …

International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The understanding of interactions between the atmosphere, the land surface and the subsurface hydrology plays a key role in ensuring sustainable development of water resources and terrestrial ecosystems. The evaluation of climate adaptation measures requires the ability to reliably simulate the impact of different anthropogenic effects such as changes in land use, interventions such as reservoirs for flood control and irrigation, conjunctive use of surface water and groundwater under projections of future climatic conditions and variability. The interaction between climate and groundwater are often neglected in climate models and climate assessment and few studies have investigated how groundwater systems will …

Ensuring Reliable Measurements In Remote Aquatic Sensor Networks, Goncalo Joao Vitorino Jesus, Anabela Oliveira, Antonio Casimiro
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
A flood monitoring system comprises an extensive network of water sensors, a bundle of forecast simulations models, and a decision-support information system. A cascade of uncertainties present in each part of the system affects a reliable flood alert and response. The timeliness and quality of data gathering, used subsequently in forecasting models, is affected by the pervasive nature of the monitoring network where aquatic sensors are vulnerable to external disturbances affecting the accuracy of data acquisition. Existing solutions for aquatic monitoring are composed by heterogeneous sensors usually unable to ensure reliable measurements in complex scenarios, due to specific effects of …

The Seine River, in France, flows through territories of large economic value, among which the metropolitan area of Paris. A system of four reservoirs operates upstream to regulate the river flows in order to protect the area against extreme events, such as floods and droughts. Current reservoirs management is based on reactive filling curves, designed from an analysis of historical hydrological regimes. The efficiency of this management strategy is jeopardized when inflows are significantly different from their seasonal average. To improve the current management strategy, we investigated the use of Tree-Based Model Predictive Control (TB-MPC). TB-MPC is a proactive and …
