Impact Of Urbanization On Spatial And Temporal Variation Of Rainfall In Beijing Over The Last 50 Years, Xiao-Meng Song, Jian-Yun Zhang, Guo-Qing Wang, Yunqing Xuan
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Rainfall is one of the key terms involved in many hydrological processes, and it is particularly important in the field of urban hydrology. It is well known that urbanization can have potential impact on precipitation process due to the changes it causes to the ground roughness, thermal-dynamics and many other factors. In this study, the focus is set on the impact on the precipitation patterns in Beijing in term of spatial and temporal variation, from the urbanization over last 50 years in which time the fast and continuous expansion of the city at dramatic scales, the rapid growth of residents …

A New Spatial Interpolation Method Based On Cross-Sections Sampling, Guoxian Huang, Binliang Lin, Jianjun Zhou, Roger Falconer, Qiuwen Chen
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The spatial interpolation results of the channel topography by the different methods have a very important effect on the topographic distribution of river channel. The study shows that the conventional interpolation methods such as TIN, Kriging and IDW methods can give good results with reasonable parameters when the sampling data is dense enough. However, the spatial distribution of source data sampled by the classical cross-section method in hydrological measurement may have large and small spaces along the longitudinal and transverse directions of river channel respectively, and then these interpolation methods above may give the unreasonable interpolation results. In this case, …

Design And Hydraulic Performance Of A Novel Hydraulic Ram Pump, Kailin Yang, Jiazhen Li, Yongxin Guo, Xinlei Guo, Hui Fu, Tao Wang
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The automatic hydraulic ram pump (hydram) is a unique device that utilizes energy from a falling quantity of water as the driving power to pump some of the water to a head much higher than the source. The hydraulic ram is structurally simple, consisting of only two moving parts: the waste valve and the delivery (check) valve. There is also an air chamber with an air or snifter valve. With a continuous flow of water, the hydram will operate automatically and continuously with no other external energy. Hydrams are suitable for small-scale water supply schemes supplying farm- houses and isolated …

Application Of Multivariate Statistical Methods To Surface Water And Groundwater Of The Soummam Basin, Algeria, Lazhar Belkhiri, Lotfi Mouni
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Multivariate statistical methods, i.e., cluster analysis (CA), discriminant analysis (DA) and analysis of variance (ANOVA), were used to assess spatial variation in the water quality of the Soummam basin, Algeria. The application of hierarchical cluster analysis, based on all possible combinations of classification method, showed three main groups of samples. The group 1 samples are exclusively composed of surface water. Groups 2 and 3 samples are consisted of groundwater. Discriminant analysis (DA) was assigned about 98.6% of the cases grouped by CA. All groups are super-saturation with Ca-montmorillonite, dolomite, gibbsite, K-mica, kaolinite and quartz, and all these groups are under-saturation …

Real-Time Control Of Floods Along The Demer River, Belgium, By Means Of Mpc In Combination With Ga And A Fast Conceptual River Model, Bert Van Den Zegel, Evert Vermuyten, Vincent Wolfs, Patrick Willems
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Climate model projections show that climate change will further increase the risk of flooding in many regions of the world. There is a need for climate adaptation, but building new infrastructure or additional retention basins has its limits, especially in densely populated areas where open spaces are limited. Another solution is the more efficient use of the existing infrastructure. This research investigates a method for real-time flood control by means of existing gated weirs and retention basins. The method was tested for the specific study area of the Demer basin in Belgium but is generally applicable. Today, retention basins along …

Reservoir Management For Flood And Drought Protection Using Infinite Horizon Model Predictive Control, Luciano Raso, Pierre-Olivier Malaterre, David Dorchies
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Model Predictive Control (MPC) is a control method that solves in real time an optimal control problem over a finite horizon. The finiteness of the horizon is both the reason of MPC's success and its main limitation. In operational water resources management, MPC has been in fact successfully employed for controlling systems with a relatively short memory, such as canals, where the horizon length is not an issue. For reservoirs, which have generally a longer memory, MPC applications are presently limited to short term management only. Short term reservoir management can be effectively used to deal with fast process, such …

Partial Information And Partial Weight - Two New Information Theoretic Metrics To Help Specify A Data-Based Natural System Model, Ashish Sharma, Rajeshwar Mehrotra
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
How to define a system? This is a problem faced routinely in science and engineering, with solutions developed from our understanding of the processes inherent, to assessing the underlying structure based on observational evidence alone. In general, system specification involves identifying a few meaningful predictors (from a large enough set that is plausibly related to the response) and formulating a relation between them and the system response being modeled. For systems where physical relationships are less apparent, and sufficient observational records exist, a range of statistical alternatives have been investigated as a possible way of specifying the underlying form. Here, …

Evaluating And Optimizing Sustainable Drainage Design To Maximize Multiple Benefits: Case Studies In China, Jo-Fai Chow, Dragan A. Savić, David Fortune, Zoran Kapelan, Netsanet Mebrate
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
In the past, the focus of drainage design was on sizing pipes and storages in order to provide sufficient network capacity. This traditional approach, together with computer software and technical guidance, had been successful for many years. However, due to rapid population growth and urbanisation, the requirements of a “good” drainage design have also changed significantly. In addition to water management, other aspects such as environmental impacts, amenity values and carbon footprint have to be considered during the design process. Going forward, we need to address the key sustainability issues carefully and practically. The key challenge of moving from simple …

Accurate Prediction Of Ecological Quality Ratio With Product Unit Neural Networks, Arie De Niet, Erwin Meijers, Sebastiaan Schep
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
This paper shows how to use product unit neural networks (punn's) to derive a data-driven model for the prediction of ecological quality in surface water. In a comparison with other approaches the punns provide by far the best prediction. Moreover they reveal the underlying relations between characteristics and ecological quality. Encouraged by the European Water Framework Directive many measures are taken by Dutch government to improve water quality en ecological quality of surface water. Although it is well known which type of measures are most effective in what cases, it is uncertain what the total effect of a measure is. …

Disaster Risk Assessment And Mitigation Strategy For Tropical Cyclone Induced Storm Surge Hazard And Coastal Impacts Of Climate Change In Sri Lanka, Janaka J. Wijetunge
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Associated with extreme winds, heavy rainfall and storm surge, land-falling tropical cyclones have the potential to cause enormous damage and losses to coastal areas of Sri Lanka. In particular, much of the damage and loss of life results from coastal flooding due to cyclone induced storm surge. Moreover, climate change impacts are likely to exacerbate the impacts of such coastal hazards on existing and future coastal communities and development. Whilst some impacts such as possible sea level rise are gradual and occur over a long time-frame, extreme weather events can occur at any time and can have a significant impact …

A Comparison Between Heuristic, Statistical, And Data-Driven Methods In Landslide Susceptibility Assessment: An Application To The Briga And Giampilieri Catchments, Antonio Francipane, Elisa Arnone, Francesco Lo Conti, Claudio Puglisi, Leonardo Valerio Noto
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Susceptibility assessment concerning the estimation of areas prone to landslide is one of the most useful approach in the analysis of landslide hazard. Over the last years, in an attempt to find the best approach to evaluate landslide susceptibility, many methods have been developed. Among these, the heuristic, the statistical, and the data-driven approaches are very widespread, and they all are based on the concept that the conditions which led to landslide movements in the past will control the probability of movement occurrence in the future. The main disadvantage of the heuristic approach is its high level of subjectivity, since …

Variational Data Assimilation With Telemac. Proof Of Concept For Model State Correction On The Berre Lagoon 3d-Model, Sophie Ricci, Andrea Piacentini, Anthony Weaver, Riadh Ata, Nicole Goutal
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
TELEMAC is a component of the open-source integrated suite of solvers TELEMAC-MASCARET for use in the field of free-surface flow that solves the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations. Generally speaking, uncertainties in the model formulation itself due to simplified physics and also in the input fields to the model such as the boundary conditions, initial conditions and hydraulic parameters translate into errors in the simulated hydraulic variables. In spite of significant advances in numerical schemes, description of geographical data (topography, bathymetry) and environmental conditions (hydrologycal and meteorological fields), the representation of the true state of a system as well as its …

A Hybrid Optimization Method For Real-Time Pump-Scheduling, Valeria Puleo, Mark Morley, Gabriele Freni, Dragan A. Savić
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Linear, non-linear and dynamic programming, heuristics and evolutionary computation are amongst the techniques which have been applied to obtain solutions to optimal pump-scheduling problems. Most of these either greatly simplify the complex water distribution system or require significant time to solve the problem. The scheduling of pumps is frequently undertaken in near-real time, in order to minimize cost and maximize energy savings. However, this requires a computationally efficient algorithm that can rapidly identify an acceptable solution. In this paper, a hybrid optimization model is presented, coupling Linear Programming and Genetic Algorithms. The resulting hybrid optimization model has demonstrated more rapid …

Combining Satellite And Gauge Precipitation Data With Co-Kriging Method For Jakarta Region, Chi Dung Doan, Jiandong Liu, Shie-Yui Liong, Dong Eon Kim, Richard Sanders, Timothy Fewtrell
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Jakarta is vulnerable to flooding mainly caused by prolonged and heavy rainfall and thus a robust hydrological modeling is called for. A good quality of spatial precipitation data is therefore desired so that a good hydrological model could be achieved. Two types of rainfall sources are available: satellite and gauge station observations. At-site rainfall is considered to be a reliable and accurate source of rainfall. However, the limited number of stations makes the spatial interpolation not very much appealing. On the other hand, the gridded rainfall nowadays has high spatial resolution and improved accuracy, but still, relatively less accurate than …
Improving Sediment Transport Modelling By A Combination Of Field Data And Sensitivity Analysis, Tom Vanwalleghem, Juan Pablo Garcia, Juan Vicente Giráldez
Improving Sediment Transport Modelling By A Combination Of Field Data And Sensitivity Analysis, Tom Vanwalleghem, Juan Pablo Garcia, Juan Vicente Giráldez
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Traditionally, the relationship between flow rate and sediment concentration in rivers has been estimated empirically. However, the problem of empirical data collection is that it is often difficult to cover the entire range of flow rates. Especially higher flow rates are often undersampled, which might lead to an underestimation of modelled sediment transport as flood events are often associated with important erosion events. In order to overcome this limitation, the introduction of the transport capacity concept can establish a safe upper bound of this sediment transport relationship. Nevertheless, given the number of implied variables in this equation, there is a …

Method Of Use And The Contribution Of Les 3d Modeling To Reproduce Velocity Distribution In Compound Channels, Salma Bellahcen, José Vazquez, Matthieu Dufresne, Robert Mose, Gilles Isenmann
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Discharge determination in open channels is of great interest for water engineering, especially in compound channels where the main difficulty is the link between the measured velocity and the mean velocity. To do so, the 3D modeling is used as a tool to get the velocity distribution in compound channels. The purpose of this study is to compare through numerical simulations, the most common turbulence models such as K-epsilon and RSM to LES that is rarely used in this field, in order to show the efficiency of the LES model to reproduce the velocity distribution. The method used is the …

Optimal Rehabilitation Strategy In Water Distribution Systems Considering Reduction In Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Farshid Rahmani, Abdollah Ardeshir, Kourosh Behzadian, Fatemeh Jalilsani
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Most of water distribution systems (WDS) need rehabilitation due to aging infrastructure leading to decreasing capacity, increasing leakage and consequently low performance of the WDS. However an appropriate strategy including location and time of pipeline rehabilitation in a WDS with respect to a limited budget is the main challenge which has been addressed frequently by researchers and practitioners. On the other hand, selection of appropriate rehabilitation technique and material types is another main issue which has yet to address properly. The latter can affect the environmental impacts of a rehabilitation strategy meeting the challenges of global warming mitigation and consequent …

International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Globally, it is widely known that floods remain the most frequent and devastating natural hazards. Likewise, there is recent evidence showing an increase in the number of extreme flood events observed around the world. Therefore, it is imperative to develop an integrated flood assessment framework that enables a better understanding of both, the generation of these events and the interaction of key variables within the hydro-meteorological system. The aim of this investigation is to study the propagation of meteorological uncertainty to a numerically estimated flood map. For such purpose, we utilise a cascade modelling approach comprised by a Numerical Weather …

Remote Sensing Of Total Water Storage Variability During Extreme Heat Waves, José Agustín Breña-Naranjo, Adrián Pedrozo-Acuña
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Droughts and heat waves are a major hazard for food & water security, economic development, and human & ecosystem health, among others. Over the last decade, short-term but exceptional heat waves have been observed across different regions of the world, with several locations experiencing all-time maximum temperature records. While many studies have suggested that the extreme intensity of such recent events can be attributed to a changing climate, little attention has been given to the impacts on the terrestrial water balance. This work analyzes the sensitivity of total water storage to extreme heat waves since 2003 in Europe (2003), Russia, …

In recent years, impervious areas are increasing in residential zone as well as unsettled area with rapid urbanization and land use. Consequently, this phenomenon influences weak urban environmental compositions about climate change including urban flooding accidents. Therefore, a new paradigm on rainwater management is needed for sound and sustainable restoration of hydrological circulation. Recently, a novel rainwater management system has been developed and recommended for irrigation and flood control in Korea. Especially, P city is now planning a new rainwater management system adopting LID (Low Impact Development) techniques on a small scale development area. In this study, XP-SWMM was used …

Accurate parameter estimation based catchment modeling systems requires considerable work to establish credibility. In this paper, a methodology for parameter estimation of hydrologic simulation model is proposed to simultaneously include several rainfall events using Shannon entropy. The proposed methodology uses Genetic Algorithm(GA) optimization techniques for the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM). Shannon entropy theory was applied to calculate weights according to each rainfall event in study area. A case study application was undertaken using the Milyang-dam basin, in Korea. Three events are applied to calculate Shannon entropy weights. Then, Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency(NSE) & Root Mean Square Error(RMSE) are compared with those …

Moving Horizon Estimation To Assimilate Snow And Soil Moisture Data Into The Hbv Hydrological Model, Rodolfo Alvarado Montero, Dirk Schwanenberg, Peter Krahe, Aynur Şensoy
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
We present a variational data assimilation approach based on a Moving Horizon Estimation (MHE) applied to the HBV hydrological model. This framework enables the modification of the model inputs precipitation and temperature as well as the model states soil moisture, upper zone storage and lower zone storage. It considers data products for snow cover, snow water equivalent and soil moisture and observed streamflow. The performance of the framework is evaluated for three test sites: i) the data–dense catchment of the upper Main River (2419 km2), Germany, for which the HBV model already produces excellent results, ii) a comparable upstream catchment …

Short-Term Management Of Hydropower: Definition, Assessment And Disposal Of Operational Flexibility, Divas Karimanzira, Dirk Schwanenberg, Chris Allen
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Modern hydroelectric power systems are largely characterized by variability and uncertainty in water resource obligations. The growing number of operational obligations for flood control, navigation, environmental obligations and ancillary services (including load balancing requirements for renewable resources) further the need to quantify sources uncertainty. The variations caused by these - factors require the hydropower system to have enough up and downward flexibility for control technologies such as dynamic optimal control load-following, unit commitment, automatic generation, to be effective. Therefore, it is increasingly important to adopting operational flexibility to better manage uncertainty and balancing reserves. The objective of this paper is …

Impact Of El Niño Southern Oscillation On Monsoon Rainfall In Bhima Basin, Central India, Dhyan Singh Arya, Mohamed Gareeballa Abdall, Asmita Ramkrishna Murumkar
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The analysis of the effects of ENSO phenomenon on monsoon rainfall of the Bhima River basin located in Central India was investigated using 10x10 degree gridded monsoon rainfall during 1951-2003 and data of four ENSO indices (SOI, MEI, Niño 3.4 and DMI). Data of ENSO indices were divided into three seasons and only statistically significantly correlation was found between monsoon rainfall and monsoon season ENSO indices. Analysis also shows that the monsoon rainfall is positively correlated with SOI index whereas negatively correlated with all other indices. A significant change in the regional climate after 1976 has been reported in many …

Simulation Of Shoreline Changes Along Muthalapozhy Harbour, India, Dhyan Singh Arya, Santosh Kori, A M. Vaidya
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
A study of Muthalapozhy fishing harbour, located in south India, was conducted for simulating shoreline changes using LITPACK modelling tool. The analysis shows that the estimated advancement in shoreline is of the order of 45 m/year initially, which gradually reduces to 25 m/year. It was also found that the coastline advances more during the south-west monsoon (i.e. June to September) season. Simulation of breakwaters shows that the length of the breakwater should be increased by 200 m for south breakwater and 70 m for north breakwater to keep the channel operational without dredging till 2016. The results of the simulated …

Practical-Oriented Pressure Sensor Placement For Model-Based Leakage Location In Water Distribution Networks, Eduard Bonada, Jordi Meseguer, Josep M. Mirats
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
In order to bring remarkable benefits to operation and management of water networks, the analysis of sensed data can be used to locate water leaks using of a model-based methodology. However, the number of sensors installed is usually limited because of budget constraints and hence a strategy for optimizing their number and placement is required. This optimization is tightly coupled to the performance of the real-time model-based leakage diagnosis operation and hence the former should consider the requirements of the latter: (1) high distinguishability among all potential leaks to be detected; and (2) strong robustness in front of model-reality mismatches …
