Setting Priorities On The Functional Status Of Hydraulic Structures In Mountainous Catchments, V. Juliette Cortes, Simone Sterlacchini, Thom Bogaard, Simone Frigerio, Luca Schenato, Alessandro Pasuto

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

The frequent inspection of hydraulic structures in mountain catchments is important due to the changing interaction among water-related processes that take place in the context of hydro-meteorological hazards such as debris flow and flash floods. At first level inspections, reports from survey protocols carried out by trained citizen-volunteers are combined to provide an index that represent the status of the structure. The survey protocols aim at identifying needs for cleaning of obstructions or to pre-screen potential problems for a second level inspection or more technical and detailed inspection. Thus, reports are focused on the functional status for the following parameters: …

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Exchange of scientific data and metadata between single users or organizations is a challenging task due to differences in data formats, the genesis of data collection, ontologies and prior knowledge of the users. Different data storage requirements, mostly defined by the structure, size and access scenarios, require also different data storage solutions, since there is no and there cannot be a data format which is suitable for all tasks and needs that occur especially in a scientific workflow. Besides data, the generation and handling of additional corresponding metadata leads us to the additional challenge of defining the "meaning" of data, …

Hybrid Control-Oriented Modeling Of Combined Sewer Networks: Barcelona Case Study, Bernat Joseph-Duran, Carlos Ocampo-Martinez, Gabriela Cembrano

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

A hybrid linear model for real-time optimization-based control of a combined sewer network has been developed to be used for the minimization of pollution during storm events. The model takes into account delays and attenuation in sewers together with piecewise linear approximations for flow over weirs, overflows in junctions and flow re-entering the network after overflows. Using the proposed model, an Optimal Control Problem (OCP) is formulated, which can be efficiently solved by means of a mixed integer linear or quadratic programming problem. The performance of a Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategy solving consecutive OCPs is assessed by means of …

Calibration Strategies Designed For Long Term Sediment Transport Modelling, Robert Klar, Stefan Achleitner, Stefan Jocham, Markus Aufleger

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

The presented work deals with the calibration of a 2D numerical model for the simulation of long term bed load transport. A settled basin along an alpine stream was used as a case study. The focus is to parameterise the used multi fractional transport model such that a dynamically balanced behavior regarding erosion and deposition is reached. The used 2D hydrodynamic model utilizes a multi-fraction multi-layer approach to simulate morphological changes and bed load transport. The mass balancing is performed between three layers: a top mixing layer, an intermediate subsurface layer and a bottom layer. Using this approach bears computational …

Hydrological Impacts Of Climate Change – Challenges, Uncertainty And Limitations, Shreedhar Maskey, Yurong Hu, Anshul Agarwal, Dinesh Bhatt Aug 2014

Hydrological Impacts Of Climate Change – Challenges, Uncertainty And Limitations, Shreedhar Maskey, Yurong Hu, Anshul Agarwal, Dinesh Bhatt

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

How climate change impacts water resources in the future is an important question that all hydrologists want to have an answer. Climate prediction scenarios are available from many Global Circulation Models for the 21st century. These prediction datasets are typically used as input to a hydrological model for simulating impacts on hydrology, particularly river runoff, evaporation, and storage changes. Because hydrological models are usually run on a much smaller resolutions than climate models, the climate prediction datasets are usually downscaled to represent local climate for using in a hydrological model. The uncertainty in the GCMs, downscaling and hydrological models makes …

Bayesian Parameter Estimation Of Modified Bartlett-Lewis Rectangular Pulse (Mblrp) Poisson Cluster Model, Hyun-Han Kwon, Jang-Kyung Kim Aug 2014

Bayesian Parameter Estimation Of Modified Bartlett-Lewis Rectangular Pulse (Mblrp) Poisson Cluster Model, Hyun-Han Kwon, Jang-Kyung Kim

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Stochastic rainfall generators or stochastic simulation have been widely employed to generate synthetic rainfall sequences which can be used in hydrologic models as inputs. The calibration of Poisson cluster stochastic rainfall generator (e.g. Modified Bartlett-Lewis Rectangular Pulse, MBLRP) is seriously affected by local minima that is usually estimated from the local optimization algorithm. In this regard, global optimization techniques such as particle swarm optimization and shuffled complex evolution algorithm have been proposed to better estimate the parameters. Although the global search algorithm is designed to avoid the local minima, reliable parameter estimation of MBLRP model is not always feasible especially …

Decision Support Tool For Hydraulic Reliability Based Design Of Water Distribution Networks, Nemanja Trifunovic Aug 2014

Decision Support Tool For Hydraulic Reliability Based Design Of Water Distribution Networks, Nemanja Trifunovic

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

The manuscript describes the decision support tool for design and hydraulic reliability assessment of water distribution networks. The reliability analyses that have been conducted on geometric-, hydraulic- and economic grounds all reflect the complexity of network resilience that is still difficult to generalise or classify, as well as it is impossible to asses without full integration of all three aspects. The tool that aims to achieve this integration processes a preselected seed of network sources and (demand) nodes prepared in EPANET without any pipe connection. It is composed of the modules for generation of various connectivity layouts by applying the …

Multi-Objective-Rehabilitation Of Urban Drainage Systems Within The Flood Risk Framework, Diego Fernando Paredes Méndez, Arlex Sanchez-Torres, Zoran Vojinović, Solomon D. Seyoum

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Urban drainage systems are one of the most valuable public utilities in any community, which protects public health and the environment, nevertheless is one of the most overlooked infrastructures until considerable failures occurred. If there are not recurrent rehabilitation programs in place this vital infrastructure will decrease the level of service. This work presents an approach to find optimal rehabilitation measures based on the hydraulic performance of the system. To assess the performance of the urban drainage system a coupled 1D-2D model was developed. The model uses SWMM 5.0 for the 1D transport; to simulate the overland flow from the …

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Data for water management is increasingly easy to access, it has finer spatial and temporal resolution, and it is available from various sources. Precipitation data can be obtained from meteorological stations, radar, satellites and weather models. Land use data is also available from different satellite products and different providers. The various sources of data may confirm each other or give very different values in space and time. However, from these various data sources, it can often not be judged beforehand that one data is correct and others are wrong. Each source has its own value for a particular purpose. The …

A New Methodology For Deriving Regional Time Of Concentration Equations Using Gis And Genetic Programming, Soroosh Sharifi, Mahdi Razaz

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Time of concentration (ToC) is the most frequently utilized time-scale parameter in hydrology which must be estimated accurately to ensure correct simulation of many different hydrological processes. Hydrologists have developed many empirical and semi-empirical methods for estimating ToC which are regional, watershed, and site-specific. Modellers are often confused by the number of ToC estimation methods and formulas and often select an equation without evaluating its correctness which leads to inaccurate simulation results. The importance of deriving and using regional ToC equations has been highlighted in many studies. In this paper, a methodology is proposed for deriving ToC equation(s) for watersheds …

Rwater – A Cyber Enabled Tool For Hydrologic Modeling And Analysis, Venkatesh Merwade, Mohammad Adnan Rajib

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Existing distributed hydrologic models are complex and computationally demanding for using as a rapid-forecasting policy-decision tool, or even as a class-room educational tool. In addition, platform dependence, specific input/output data structures and non-dynamic data-interaction with pluggable software components inside the existing proprietary frameworks make these models restrictive only to the specialized user groups. RWater is a web-based hydrologic analysis and modeling framework that utilizes the commonly used R software within the HUBzero cyber infrastructure of Purdue University. RWater is designed as an integrated framework for distributed hydrologic simulation, along with subsequent parameter optimization and visualization schemes. RWater provides platform independent …

Research And Application On The Coupled Method Of Remote-Sensing And Ground-Monitoring Of Reservoir Storage Capacity, He Zhu, Hongli Zhao, Yunzhong Jiang, Li Wang Aug 2014

Research And Application On The Coupled Method Of Remote-Sensing And Ground-Monitoring Of Reservoir Storage Capacity, He Zhu, Hongli Zhao, Yunzhong Jiang, Li Wang

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Reservoir storage capacity monitoring is the basis of reservoir operation. The relationship curves of reservoir water level-area and water level-capacity are the significant parameters of storage capacity calculation. With the long-term operation, both on the bottom and bank of the reservoir have erosion and deposition, causing the relationship of water level-area and level-storage changes, which leads to inaccuracy of reservoir storage capacity calculation with the original curves. It is costly to revise the curves of reservoir water level-area and water level-capacity by ground measurement termly. A coupled Method of Remote-sensing and Ground-monitoring of Reservoir Storage Capacity is proposed in this …

Development And Testing Of Data Driven Nowcasting Models Of Beach Water Quality, Jainy Mavani, Lianghao Chen, Darko Joksimovic, Songnian Li

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Beach water issues are gaining worldwide attention due to their impact on health and other environmental problems. The Ontario beaches require beach managers to issue swimming advisories when water quality standards are exceeded since users of recreational waters may be exposed to elevated pathogen levels through various point and non-point sources. Typical daily notifications rely on microbial analysis of indicator organisms (e.g. Escherichia coli), which require 18-24 hours to provide an adequate response. This research evaluated the use of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and Evolutionary Polynomial Regression (EPR) for real time prediction of E.coli in the beach waters of Toronto …

Optimal Tank Design And Operation Strategy To Enhance Water Quality In Distribution Systems, Alemtsehay G. Seyoum, Tiku T. Tanyimboh, Calvin Siew Aug 2014

Optimal Tank Design And Operation Strategy To Enhance Water Quality In Distribution Systems, Alemtsehay G. Seyoum, Tiku T. Tanyimboh, Calvin Siew

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Water storage tanks are key components of water distribution networks (WDNs) and are primarily designed and operated to meet demand variations and pressure needs. However, the common practice in the design of WDNs is to incorporate large storage tanks that may possibly create long residence time. Long residence time is a major contributing factor for loss of disinfectant, increased formation of disinfection by products and microbial regrowth. Also, poor choice in tank geometry, location and operation can play a role in deterioration of water quality. Most of the previous approaches on optimisation of WDNs design and operation do not take …

Optimization Of Groundwater Remediation With New Efficient Parallel Algorithm For Global Optimization, Min Pang, Christine A. Shoemaker

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Application of optimization algorithm to PDE modeling groundwater remediation can greatly reduce remediation cost. However, groundwater remediation analysis requires a computational expensive simulation, therefore, effective parallel optimization could potentially greatly reduce computational expense. The optimization algorithm used in this research is Parallel Stochastic radial basis function. This is designed for global optimization of computationally expensive functions with multiple local optima and it does not require derivatives. In each iteration of the algorithm, an RBF is updated based on all the evaluated points in order to approximate expensive function. Then the new RBF surface is used to generate the next set …

Short-Term Hydropower Optimization Using A Time-Decomposition Algorithm, Jonathan R. Lamontagne, Jery Russell Stedinger Aug 2014

Short-Term Hydropower Optimization Using A Time-Decomposition Algorithm, Jonathan R. Lamontagne, Jery Russell Stedinger

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Hydropower operations optimization models select a sequence of releases from one or more reservoirs that maximizes the expected benefit while honoring many social and environmental constraints. A 3-tiered time-decomposition algorithm is adopted to compute optimal sub-daily releases for the Harris Station reservoir in Maine, USA. This involves solving nested optimization models, each with a different planning horizon and time-step, where the longer-term planning models inform the shorter-term models. This allows for rapid optimization of short-term operations, while efficiently considering seasonal objectives and constraints. In the case study presented, 6-hr release decisions in a weekly model are made by iteratively solving …

Enabling Access To Non-Point Source Risk Mapping Tools Using Open Source Software And Open Geospatial Consortium (Ogc) Standards : The Development Of The Scimap Webapp, Peter Wells, Sim Reaney

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

No-point (diffuse) pollution is a key environmental pressure effecting water quality and ecology in lakes and rivers. Many governmental and NGO bodies are working to tacking the problem but their efforts are constrained by the complexities of the problem. To enable the spatial targeting of the mitigation measures at the landscape scale, the SCIMAP risk mapping approach was developed by Durham and Lancaster Universities in the UK. The approach was well received but the desktop implementation created problems for users. NGO users generally did not have the required datasets or GIS skills. Governmental users within a corporate managed IT environment …

High Performance Gpu Speed-Up Strategies For The Computation Of 2d Inundation Models, Asier Lacasta, Mario Morales-Hernández, Javier Murillo, Pilar García-Navarro, Reinaldo Garcia

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Two-dimensional (2D) models are increasingly used for inundation assesements in situations involving large domains of millions of computational elements and long-time scales of several months. Practical applications often involve a compromise between spatial accuracy and computational efficiency and to achieve the necessary spatial resolution, rather fine meshes become necessary requiring more data storage and very long computer times comparable to the real simulated process (e.g. 1 month of real-time simulation may require 1 month of computations approximately). Obviously, using conventional 2D non-parallelized models (CPU based) make simulations impractical in real project applications, but improving the performance of such complex models …

Life and property losses because of disasters such as flood and landslide are getting dramatic increases for past years. Frequent extreme weather events have even worsened the damages globally. Given sufficient information in advance, disaster preparedness and management can be well-settled. The damages and losses can be mitigated and even prevented. An early disaster warning system with enough leadtimes is essential for decision-makers to take prevented measures and execute cautions. This study proposed a prototype of an early disaster warning system which issues warnings for rainfall related disasters such as flood and landslide. Using ensemble quantitative precipitation forecasts, the system …
