Improving Sediment Transport Modelling By A Combination Of Field Data And Sensitivity Analysis, Tom Vanwalleghem, Juan Pablo Garcia, Juan Vicente Giráldez Aug 2014

Improving Sediment Transport Modelling By A Combination Of Field Data And Sensitivity Analysis, Tom Vanwalleghem, Juan Pablo Garcia, Juan Vicente Giráldez

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Traditionally, the relationship between flow rate and sediment concentration in rivers has been estimated empirically. However, the problem of empirical data collection is that it is often difficult to cover the entire range of flow rates. Especially higher flow rates are often undersampled, which might lead to an underestimation of modelled sediment transport as flood events are often associated with important erosion events. In order to overcome this limitation, the introduction of the transport capacity concept can establish a safe upper bound of this sediment transport relationship. Nevertheless, given the number of implied variables in this equation, there is a …

Method Of Use And The Contribution Of Les 3d Modeling To Reproduce Velocity Distribution In Compound Channels, Salma Bellahcen, José Vazquez, Matthieu Dufresne, Robert Mose, Gilles Isenmann

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Discharge determination in open channels is of great interest for water engineering, especially in compound channels where the main difficulty is the link between the measured velocity and the mean velocity. To do so, the 3D modeling is used as a tool to get the velocity distribution in compound channels. The purpose of this study is to compare through numerical simulations, the most common turbulence models such as K-epsilon and RSM to LES that is rarely used in this field, in order to show the efficiency of the LES model to reproduce the velocity distribution. The method used is the …

Optimal Rehabilitation Strategy In Water Distribution Systems Considering Reduction In Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Farshid Rahmani, Abdollah Ardeshir, Kourosh Behzadian, Fatemeh Jalilsani

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Most of water distribution systems (WDS) need rehabilitation due to aging infrastructure leading to decreasing capacity, increasing leakage and consequently low performance of the WDS. However an appropriate strategy including location and time of pipeline rehabilitation in a WDS with respect to a limited budget is the main challenge which has been addressed frequently by researchers and practitioners. On the other hand, selection of appropriate rehabilitation technique and material types is another main issue which has yet to address properly. The latter can affect the environmental impacts of a rehabilitation strategy meeting the challenges of global warming mitigation and consequent …

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Globally, it is widely known that floods remain the most frequent and devastating natural hazards. Likewise, there is recent evidence showing an increase in the number of extreme flood events observed around the world. Therefore, it is imperative to develop an integrated flood assessment framework that enables a better understanding of both, the generation of these events and the interaction of key variables within the hydro-meteorological system. The aim of this investigation is to study the propagation of meteorological uncertainty to a numerically estimated flood map. For such purpose, we utilise a cascade modelling approach comprised by a Numerical Weather …

Remote Sensing Of Total Water Storage Variability During Extreme Heat Waves, José Agustín Breña-Naranjo, Adrián Pedrozo-Acuña

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Droughts and heat waves are a major hazard for food & water security, economic development, and human & ecosystem health, among others. Over the last decade, short-term but exceptional heat waves have been observed across different regions of the world, with several locations experiencing all-time maximum temperature records. While many studies have suggested that the extreme intensity of such recent events can be attributed to a changing climate, little attention has been given to the impacts on the terrestrial water balance. This work analyzes the sensitivity of total water storage to extreme heat waves since 2003 in Europe (2003), Russia, …

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Accurate parameter estimation based catchment modeling systems requires considerable work to establish credibility. In this paper, a methodology for parameter estimation of hydrologic simulation model is proposed to simultaneously include several rainfall events using Shannon entropy. The proposed methodology uses Genetic Algorithm(GA) optimization techniques for the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM). Shannon entropy theory was applied to calculate weights according to each rainfall event in study area. A case study application was undertaken using the Milyang-dam basin, in Korea. Three events are applied to calculate Shannon entropy weights. Then, Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency(NSE) & Root Mean Square Error(RMSE) are compared with those …

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

We present a variational data assimilation approach based on a Moving Horizon Estimation (MHE) applied to the HBV hydrological model. This framework enables the modification of the model inputs precipitation and temperature as well as the model states soil moisture, upper zone storage and lower zone storage. It considers data products for snow cover, snow water equivalent and soil moisture and observed streamflow. The performance of the framework is evaluated for three test sites: i) the data–dense catchment of the upper Main River (2419 km2), Germany, for which the HBV model already produces excellent results, ii) a comparable upstream catchment …

Short-Term Management Of Hydropower: Definition, Assessment And Disposal Of Operational Flexibility, Divas Karimanzira, Dirk Schwanenberg, Chris Allen

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Modern hydroelectric power systems are largely characterized by variability and uncertainty in water resource obligations. The growing number of operational obligations for flood control, navigation, environmental obligations and ancillary services (including load balancing requirements for renewable resources) further the need to quantify sources uncertainty. The variations caused by these - factors require the hydropower system to have enough up and downward flexibility for control technologies such as dynamic optimal control load-following, unit commitment, automatic generation, to be effective. Therefore, it is increasingly important to adopting operational flexibility to better manage uncertainty and balancing reserves. The objective of this paper is …

Simulation Of Shoreline Changes Along Muthalapozhy Harbour, India, Dhyan Singh Arya, Santosh Kori, A M. Vaidya

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

A study of Muthalapozhy fishing harbour, located in south India, was conducted for simulating shoreline changes using LITPACK modelling tool. The analysis shows that the estimated advancement in shoreline is of the order of 45 m/year initially, which gradually reduces to 25 m/year. It was also found that the coastline advances more during the south-west monsoon (i.e. June to September) season. Simulation of breakwaters shows that the length of the breakwater should be increased by 200 m for south breakwater and 70 m for north breakwater to keep the channel operational without dredging till 2016. The results of the simulated …

Practical-Oriented Pressure Sensor Placement For Model-Based Leakage Location In Water Distribution Networks, Eduard Bonada, Jordi Meseguer, Josep M. Mirats

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

In order to bring remarkable benefits to operation and management of water networks, the analysis of sensed data can be used to locate water leaks using of a model-based methodology. However, the number of sensors installed is usually limited because of budget constraints and hence a strategy for optimizing their number and placement is required. This optimization is tightly coupled to the performance of the real-time model-based leakage diagnosis operation and hence the former should consider the requirements of the latter: (1) high distinguishability among all potential leaks to be detected; and (2) strong robustness in front of model-reality mismatches …

Using Multi-Objective Optimization To Maximize Multiple Benefits For Sustainable Drainage Design, Jo-Fai Chow, Dragan A. Savić, David Fortune, Zoran Kapelan, Netsanet Mebrate

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

For many years, drainage design was mainly about providing sufficient network capacity. This traditional approach had been successful with the aid of computer software and technical guidance. However, the drainage design criteria had been evolving due to rapid population growth, urbanisation, climate change and increasing sustainability awareness. Sustainable drainage systems that bring benefits in addition to water management have been recommended as better alternatives to conventional pipes and storages. Although the concepts and good practice guidance had already been communicated to decision makers and public for years, network capacity still remains a key design focus in many circumstances while the …

Leakage Localization In Virtual District Metered Areas With Differential Evolution, David Steffelbauer, Markus Günther, Markus Neumayer, Daniela Fuchs-Hanusch Aug 2014

Leakage Localization In Virtual District Metered Areas With Differential Evolution, David Steffelbauer, Markus Günther, Markus Neumayer, Daniela Fuchs-Hanusch

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Leakages in water distribution systems (WDS) can lead to supply interruptions, contaminations and economic losses. Hence finding leaks before they cause severe problems is a crucial task for water utilities. To identify the existence of leaks, night flow measurements in district-metered areas (DMA) are common practice. Therefore, the entire system has to be subdivided in hydraulically separated partial networks. However, many utilities do not want to lose the hydraulic redundancy of their system and hence search for other solutions to identify and allocate leaks. In our research, the effects of leakages on the hydraulic behaviour of WDS are utilized to …

Soft Sensing The Potential Amount Of Calcium Carbonate Precipitate In Drinking Water Distribution Infrastructure And Warm Water Household Appliances, Dirk Vries, Joost Van Summeren, Benjamin Van Den Akker, Alex Van Der Helm, Ignaz Worm, Peter Van Thienen

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

A soft sensor is developed to predict the potential amount of precipitation of calcium carbonate (CCPP) in warm water household devices and scaling or corrosive behavior in water distribution networks. With the aid of a water supply network model, it is shown that the soft sensor is able to predict CCPP levels at pre-specified downstream nodes using only measurements at a limited set of upstream nodes. Furthermore, the soft sensor consists of a data assimilation algorithm to provide for best estimates of the CCPP and confidence intervals.

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Management of a water supply system from the point of view of the conjunctive use of water sources is a very complex problem whose solution is not just obtained using analytical models but also through a negotiation process among stakeholders and in which Public Bodies have a main role. For these reasons, this problem has been addressed using conservative approaches based on simulation models or simulation – linear optimization models parameterized using few parameters. These approaches have certain strengths but also certain drawbacks or constraints. In general these conservative approaches are already covered by existing generalized modelling tools (i.e. Aquator, …

Flow Control By Water Reservoir In Conditions Of Torrential Floods, Vitaly Ilinich

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Majority of water reservoirs are located in conditions of torrential floods. Difficulty of flow control by such water reservoirs consists in next: different requirements can take place in same within-year intervals during different years. Irrigation requests the big water storage in reservoir, but during the same time a low water level of the reservoir is more preferred for safe drafts during possible catastrophic flood. Accordingly, main aim of the research is search of profitable and safe rules of flow control by water reservoir. The aim has required of solving of next problems: 1) to choose a duration of within-year interval …

This paper presents a framework based on hydraulic simulation and machine learning for supporting Water Distribution Network (WDN) managers in localizing leakages, while reducing time and costs for investigation, intervention and rehabilitation. As a first step, hydraulic simulation is used to run different leakage scenarios by introducing a leak on each pipe, in turn, and varying its severity. As output of each scenario run, pressure and flow variations in correspondence of the actual monitoring points into the WDN, and with respect to the faultless model, are stored. Scenarios clustering is aimed at grouping together leaks generating similar effects, in terms …

Vulnerability Assessment Of Water Distribution Systems Using Directed And Undirected Graph Theory, Kegong Diao, Raziyeh Farmani, Guangtao Fu, David Butler Aug 2014

Vulnerability Assessment Of Water Distribution Systems Using Directed And Undirected Graph Theory, Kegong Diao, Raziyeh Farmani, Guangtao Fu, David Butler

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Vulnerability assessment is a promising approach to identifying critical components of complex systems. In such systems, critical components could be crucial links and strategic locations for management and control. Managing those components better could, in turn, improve or reinforce a system’s resilience to shock events. However, fully comprehensive vulnerability assessments cannot be guaranteed as enumerating all possible shock events in complex systems is computationally intensive and almost infeasible. Consequently, the important role of some components might be neglected. This paper explores the feasibility of using a dual approach vulnerability assessment for water distribution systems (WDSs). Specifically, complex network analysis (e.g. …
