Development Of An Information Mapping Framework To Couple Surface Flow And Subsurface Hydraulic Models, Kashif Shaad, Paolo Burlando Aug 2014

Development Of An Information Mapping Framework To Couple Surface Flow And Subsurface Hydraulic Models, Kashif Shaad, Paolo Burlando

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Here we present the outline of an information mapping framework that allows coupling of existing surface and subsurface hydraulic modelling domains and can provide an alternate to specialized fully integrated coupled modelling codes. The flexibility of the framework intends to allow selecting solvers with assumptions and representations in-line with the requirements of the area being modelled as well as reusing the expertise that has gone into building the decoupled models as part of the respective surface flow or groundwater study. We focus on 2d representation of surface hydraulics and 3d representation of subsurface flow to form the basis of the …

Evaluating Remediation Potential Of A Salinized Heterogeneous Aquifer System Using Three-Dimensional, Density-Dependent Groundwater Modeling, Marc Walther, Lars Bilke, Jens-Olaf Delfs, Thomas Graf, Jens Grundmann, Rudolf Liedl, Olaf Kolditz

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

In arid regions, groundwater is the most reliable source for freshwater. Thus, ensuring an aquifer’s long-term stability is one of the fundamental tasks for nowadays groundwater management. Especially in agriculturally used coastal regions, where water consumption exceeds annual recharge, water table drawdown and subsequent saline intrusion are problems that need to be addressed. Wihin the context of the government-funded research project „International Water ResearchAlliance Saxony“, groundwater quality for near-coastal, agriculturally used areas was investigated under the influence of marine saltwater intrusion. In the study region’s near-coastal areas, agricultural development increased tremendously during recent decades, while a steady lowering of the …

On The Influence Of Error Model In The Good Performance Of The Hydrological Model For The Right Reasons., Félix Francés, Mario R. Hernández Aug 2014

On The Influence Of Error Model In The Good Performance Of The Hydrological Model For The Right Reasons., Félix Francés, Mario R. Hernández

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Hydrological models provide extrapolations or predictions, which are not lacking of uncertainty, which reduces the confidence in their results. One phase of the hydrological implementation process, which significantly contributes to that uncertainty, is the calibration phase in which values of the unknown model parameters are tuned by optimizing an objective function. Traditionally, the most commonly used fitting criterion, has been the simple least squares (SLS), regardless of the SLS criterion involves assumptions about the probability distribution of the errors. Failure of these assumptions introduces noise into the estimation of the parameters, which leads to the phenomenon called model divergence, where the …

Smart-Onlinewdn: A Franco-German Project For The Online Security Management Of Water Distribution Networks, Thomas Bernard, Olivier A. Piller, Denis Gilbert, Mathias Braun, Christian Kühnert, Jochen W. Deuerlein, Andreas Korth, Reik Nitsche

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Water Distribution Networks (WDNs) are critical infrastructures that are exposed to deliberate or accidental chemical, biological or radioactive contamination which need to be detected in due time. However, until now, no monitoring system is capable of protecting a WDN in real time. Powerful online sensor systems are currently developed and the prototypes are able to detect a small change in water quality. In the immediate future, water service utilities will install their networks with water quantity and water quality sensors. For taking appropriate decisions and countermeasures, WDN operators will need to dispose of: 1) a fast and reliable detection of …

A Wireless Mesh Sensor Network Framework For River Flood Detection And Emergency Communications In Case Of Disaster, Mynor Vinicio Anthone Andrade, Satoru Oishi Aug 2014

A Wireless Mesh Sensor Network Framework For River Flood Detection And Emergency Communications In Case Of Disaster, Mynor Vinicio Anthone Andrade, Satoru Oishi

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

This study proposes an alternative network relatively simple and inexpensive that can be used for maintaining communications capabilities during major natural disasters and other emergency situations by introducing a system that utilizes Short Message Service(SMS) over Wireless Mesh Sensor Networks(WMSNs). To create this WMSN we propose a system using the water level sensors widely used in rivers throughout the world. Nowadays, most of the communication systems and their applications require a network infrastructure like cellular network or the Internet for communications between users. This communication links can become unavailable during a major disaster due to damaged infrastructure and power outages. …

Portable Gpu-Based Artificial Neural Networks For Data-Driven Modeling, Zheng Yi Wu Aug 2014

Portable Gpu-Based Artificial Neural Networks For Data-Driven Modeling, Zheng Yi Wu

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Artificial neural network (ANN) is widely applied as data-driven modeling tool in hydroinformatics due to its broad applicability of handing implicit and nonlinear relationships between the input and output data. To obtain a reliable ANN model, training ANN using the data is essential, but the training is usually taking many hours for large data set and/or for large systems with many variants. This may not be a concern when ANN is trained for offline applications, but it is of great importance when ANN is trained or retrained for real-time and near real-time applications, which are becoming an increasingly interested research …

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

The Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin contains approximately twenty percent of the world’s surface freshwater. The five Great Lakes (Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario) provide drinking water for 24 million people and support industry, agriculture, and a world-class fishery and ecosystem. The region includes parts of two nations, eight U.S. States and two Canadian Provinces, many Tribes and First Nations, thousands of municipalities and local governments, and a range of stakeholders. These various governments and partners work across borders to manage and protect the region’s water resources and share data and information through a legal and political framework that …

Predicting The Impact Of Climate Change On Pipe Failure In Drinking Water Distribution Systems., Bas Wols, Peter Van Thienen Aug 2014

Predicting The Impact Of Climate Change On Pipe Failure In Drinking Water Distribution Systems., Bas Wols, Peter Van Thienen

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Underground water infrastructure is designed to withstand a variability of forces during its lifetime before failure occurs. As a result of variations in loads on and deterioration of the pipe, early failures may occur. Climate change may accelerate or decelerate these processes. A statistical analysis is therefore performed to study correlations between weather parameters and pipe failure rates in the drinking water distribution systems (DWDS) of the Netherlands. The strongest correlations were found between pipe failure rates and temperature. Failure rates in asbestos cement (AC) and small diameter steel pipes increase during warm periods, which often also show higher water …

A New Methodology For The Design Of Residential Water Distribution Networks And Its Population Range Of Application., Daniel Vallejo, Juan Guillermo Saldarriaga, Diego Alejandro Páez, Santiago Serrano Aug 2014

A New Methodology For The Design Of Residential Water Distribution Networks And Its Population Range Of Application., Daniel Vallejo, Juan Guillermo Saldarriaga, Diego Alejandro Páez, Santiago Serrano

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

For the design of a Water Distribution Systems (WDS) or for Residential Water Networks (RWN) different assumptions have to be made. This implies that the design methodologies for each of the two kinds of networks differ between them and so it is important to define a population value that limits the applicability of each method. This paper will present a new methodology for the RWN’s design process as well as the calculation the population limit. For designing the RWN demands’ predictions have to be made. The new methodology uses the concept of Poisson Rectangular Pulses (PRP) for modeling the water …

2-D And 3-D Numerical Modeling Of Dam Break Waves Over Moveable Beds, Kamal El Kadi Abderrezzak, Riadh Ata, Pablo Tassi, Dongchen Wang, Jean-Michel Hervouet, Andres Die Moran Aug 2014

2-D And 3-D Numerical Modeling Of Dam Break Waves Over Moveable Beds, Kamal El Kadi Abderrezzak, Riadh Ata, Pablo Tassi, Dongchen Wang, Jean-Michel Hervouet, Andres Die Moran

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Dam-break waves over movable beds are multi-physical processes that involve rapidly varying flows, intense sediment transport and significant alteration in bed morphology. In turn, this change in morphology may strongly affect the maximum water levels and arrival time of the wave front, which are the main characteristics to consider for use in risk assessment. In this paper, we report numerical simulations of dam-break waves induced sediment transport using the open source Telemac-Mascaret modeling system (www.opentelemac.org). The 3D hydrodynamic model, TELEMAC-3D, and the 2D depth-averaged hydrodynamic model, TELEMAC-2D, are used. Both models are internally coupled with the sediment transport module SISYPHE. …

Model Predictive Control Combined With Genetic Algorithms For A River System, Po-Kuan Chiang, Patrick Willems Aug 2014

Model Predictive Control Combined With Genetic Algorithms For A River System, Po-Kuan Chiang, Patrick Willems

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Flood is one of the natural disasters. It frequently causes costly economic losses and numbers of lives come to harm. Due to these severe injuries, how to perform an effective flood control is always a huge challenge for governments and water authorities. In order to establish successful flood control strategies to prevent or alleviate flood damages, besides implementing operating rules (regulations) established by water authorities for the hydraulic structures, applying real time optimization-based control strategies is a supplementary tool for water managers to make decisions. It is expected that the importance of such real time control strategies will become more …

Dynamic Water Quality Modelling Of Tannery Effluents – Bogotá River (Colombia), Tania Fernanda Santos Santos, Luis Alejandro Camacho

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Untreated tannery discharges to rivers are still a common practice in developing countries causing severe pollution. In this paper the development and application of a dynamic water quality model to simulate the impact caused by tannery effluents with high contents of sulphides, chlorides and chromium is presented. The proposed model subroutines, designed and implemented in MATLAB/SIMULINK in this work, were coupled to an existing efficient aggregated dynamic river transport and water quality model of conventional determinands. A Chromium (Cr) transport and fate modeling subroutine was implemented to determine the speciation of Cr3 and Cr6 and the dissolved and particulate fractions …

Modeling The Effects Sea Level Rise On Flooding In The Lower Niger River, Zahrah Naankwat Musa, Ioana Popescu, Arthur E. Mynett Aug 2014

Modeling The Effects Sea Level Rise On Flooding In The Lower Niger River, Zahrah Naankwat Musa, Ioana Popescu, Arthur E. Mynett

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

The Niger River bifurcates into the Nun and Forcados rivers as it flows through the Niger delta, with the Forcados River taking 46% of the discharge and the Nun River taking 54%. Within the last fifteen years the Niger delta coastal zone has experienced peak floods between September and October due to intense rains from upstream. Many studies including the United Nations Framework on Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) indicate that the Niger delta region could be inundated with water due to the effects of climate change. According to local experts, the Niger delta is subsiding at over 25mm/annum; a …

Prediction Of Scour Depth Around Bridge Piers Using Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference Systems (Anfis), Manousos Valyrakis, Hanqing Zhang Aug 2014

Prediction Of Scour Depth Around Bridge Piers Using Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference Systems (Anfis), Manousos Valyrakis, Hanqing Zhang

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Earth's surface is continuously shaped due to the action of geophysical flows. Erosion due to the flow of water in river systems has been identified as a key problem in preserving ecological health but also a threat to our built environment and critical infrastructure, worldwide. As an example, it has been estimated that a major reason for bridge failure is due to scour. Even though the flow past bridge piers has been investigated both experimentally and numerically, and the mechanisms of scouring are relatively understood, there still lacks a tool that can offer fast and reliable predictions. Most of the …

Regional Versus Physically-Based Methods For Flood Inundation Modelling In Data Scarce Areas: An Application To The Blue Nile, Kun Yan, Florian Pappenberger, Yakob M. Umer, Dimitri P. Solomatine, Giuliano Di Baldassarre Aug 2014

Regional Versus Physically-Based Methods For Flood Inundation Modelling In Data Scarce Areas: An Application To The Blue Nile, Kun Yan, Florian Pappenberger, Yakob M. Umer, Dimitri P. Solomatine, Giuliano Di Baldassarre

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

One of the main obstacles in mapping flood hazard in data scarce areas is the difficulty in estimating the design flood, i.e. river discharge corresponding to a given return period. This exercise can be carried out using regionalization techniques, which are based on flood data of regions with similar hydro-climatic conditions, or employing physically based model cascades. In this context, we compared the flood extents maps derived for a river reach of the Blue Nile following two alternative methods: i) regional envelope curve (REC), whereby design floods (e.g. 1-in-20 and 1-in-100 year flood peaks) are derived from African envelope curves …

Numerical Modeling Of Flow And Sediment Transport Within The Lower Reaches Of The Athabasca River: A Case Study, Shalini Kashyap, Ahmad Shakibaei, Ali Oveisy, Yonas Dibike, Terry Prowse, Droppo Ian

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

This study investigates flow and sediment transport patterns within the lower reaches of the Athabasca River (~250 km) in Alberta, Canada, which are characterized by complex bathymetry, regions of high tortuosity, and variable discharges and bed slopes. Sediment within this reach is primarily sand and gravel, but there is also a high percentage (>10%) of cohesive clay with unique settling properties. A combination of 1D and 2D regional numerical modeling is used here to predict hydrodynamics of the flow and transport of suspended sediment. Bathymetry measurements were obtained from a combination of high resolution 3D Geoswath and ADCP surveys, …

Statistically Downscaled North American Precipitation Using Support Vector Regression And The Big Brother Approach., Carlos F. Gaitan, Keith W. Dixon, Venkatramani Balaji, Renee Mcpherson

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

We implemented a hybrid downscaling model using classification and regression trees and support vector regression with evolutionary strategies to statistically downscale precipitation occurrences and amounts from 16 points across North America. All the selected points belong to different climate regions. In addition, to evaluate the downscaling model’s historical and future performances we used daily precipitation outputs (from a high resolution ~25km grid spacing global atmospheric model) as predictands, and coarsened versions of the same high-resolution outputs from the nearest nine gridpoints (interpolated to a ~100km grid), as predictors. This experimental setup, known as “Big-Brother” allows us to use the high-resolution …

Does The Risk Of Groundwater Depletion Drive Tube-Well Technology Adoption: A Case Of Pakistan, Arif Watto, Amin Mugera Aug 2014

Does The Risk Of Groundwater Depletion Drive Tube-Well Technology Adoption: A Case Of Pakistan, Arif Watto, Amin Mugera

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

We employ a moment-based approach to empirically analyse farmer’s decisions about adoption of tube-well technology under depleting groundwater resources using a farm level data from 200 farming households in the Punjab province, Pakistan. The results indicate that the higher the expected profit the greater the probability of adoption. Similarly, with increasing variance the probability of adopting tube-well increases significantly indicating that farmers choose to adopt tube-well technology in order to hedge against production risks. Statistical non-significant the third moment i.e., skewness indicates that farmer generally do not consider downside yield risk when decide to adopt tube-well technology whereas highly significant …

Model Configuration And Data Management In The Short-Term Water Information Forecasting Tools, Jean-Michel Perraud, James Bennett, David Robertson, Phil Ward Aug 2014

Model Configuration And Data Management In The Short-Term Water Information Forecasting Tools, Jean-Michel Perraud, James Bennett, David Robertson, Phil Ward

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

The Short-term Water Information and Forecasting Tools (SWIFT) is a suite of tools for flood and short-term streamflow forecasting, consisting of a collection of hydrologic model components and utilities. Catchments are modeled using conceptual subareas and a node-link structure for channel routing. The tools comprise modules for calibration, model state updating, output error correction, ensemble runs and data assimilation. Given the combinatorial nature of the modelling experiments and the sub-daily time steps typically used for simulations, the volume of model configurations and time series data is substantial and its management is not trivial. SWIFT is currently used mostly for research …

Bayesian Model Averaging Approach For Reducing Urban Flooding Damage Estimation Uncertainty, Vincenza Notaro, Chiara Maria Fontanazza, Gabriele Freni Aug 2014

Bayesian Model Averaging Approach For Reducing Urban Flooding Damage Estimation Uncertainty, Vincenza Notaro, Chiara Maria Fontanazza, Gabriele Freni

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Uncertainty analysis is useful to define the level of reliability of a modelling application, but operational methods are needed to identify the best modelling structure for a specific problem based on uncertainty reduction criteria. One interesting example is given by flood damage estimation problem where different possible modelling solution and flood damage estimation can be used depending on the case study. Past literature showed that several modelling structures may be equally reliable in terms of calibration ability but they may produce different uncertainty levels. The use of the Bayesian approach for uncertainty analysis has been stimulated by its rigorous theoretical …

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Renewable energy production is a basic supplement to stabilize rapidly increasing global energy demand and skyrocketing energy price as well as to balance the fluctuation of supply from non-renewable energy sources at electrical grid hubs. The European energy traders, government and private company energy providers and other stakeholders have been, since recently, a major beneficiary, customer and clients of Hydropower simulation solutions. The relationship between rainfall-runoff model outputs and energy productions of hydropower plants has not been clearly studied. In this research, association of rainfall, catchment characteristics, river network and runoff with energy production of a particular hydropower station is …

Flash floods often occurred suddenly and they also usually induce the occurrence of landslides and debris flows. The work of flash flood defense is full of challenge because of the complex process of flash flood formation. Disasters caused by flash flood occurred frequently and have an increasing trend in China with huge casualty. Therefore the Chinese government increased more inputs on the study of flash flood defense. After some endeavors in recent years, a set of non-structural measures on flash flood defense has been established featuring Chinese characteristics. In these measures, monitoring and warning system is a core. This paper …

Recently, River Information Systems that integrate a variety of riverine information have been widely developed, driven by information technologies. The present study attempts to develop a software called HydroConnector that dynamically integrates river-based numerical modeling or post-processing with in situ data, based upon a data searching technique that uses a hydro web service built on top of an ODM-based database, following a CUAHSI standard. It fundamentally differs from the conventional direct access to the database for acquiring a given period of a dataset. Such a hydro web service and ODM-based database were built by utilizing existing real-time stream gaging data, …

Parameterization And Sampling Design For Water Distribution Networks Demand Calibration Using The Singular Value Decomposition: Application To A Real Network, Gerard Sanz, Ramon Perez Aug 2014

Parameterization And Sampling Design For Water Distribution Networks Demand Calibration Using The Singular Value Decomposition: Application To A Real Network, Gerard Sanz, Ramon Perez

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

The availability of a good hydraulic model increases the reliability of the results of methodologies using it. Thus the calibration of the model is a previous step that has to be done. The most uncertain parameters of the model are demands due to their constant variability. However, calibrating these demands requires a high computational cost that can be reduced by redefining the unknown parameters from demands to demand patterns. Besides, the number and location of the used sensors is highly correlated with the definition of such patterns. This paper presents a methodology for parameterizing and selecting sensors using the information …

Publishing And Federating Global Water Data And Maps Via Web Services, David K. Arctur, David R. Maidment

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Finding and accessing data in most countries of the world about local, regional and national water resources (streamflow discharge, gauge depth, soil moisture, etc.) has been complicated by a number of issues, from concerns of local and national security, to lack of suitable conventions and standards for data exchange that could be reasonably implemented and enforced at the national and international levels. These issues are now starting to be addressed, thanks to recently adopted standards for hydrologic data exchange, and growing acceptance of community standards for web services to perform such data exchange. This presentation reviews recent work in this …

On The Modeling And Real-Time Control Of Urban Drainage Systems: A Survey, Luis Antonio Garcia Gutierrez, Eduardo Escobar, Duvan Téllez, Julian Barreiro Gómez, Nicanor Quijano Silva, Carlos Ocampo-Martinez

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Drainage network are complex systems composed by several processes including recollection, transport, storing, wastewater and/or rain treatment, and return of the water to a receiving environment. Urban drainage systems (UDS) involve most of these processes inside cities and can be either separate or combined systems, depending on how wastewater and rainwater are managed. The way UDS manage the wastewater is through the convenient handling of active elements such as gates (redirection and/or retention), storing tanks and pumping stations, when needed. Therefore, the modeling and control of UDS basically consists in knowing and representing the (dynamical) behavior of those elements and …

Evaluating Climate Change Scenarios For Regional Hydrological Management In Mountainous Semi-Arid Environments, Agustín Millares, Javier Herrero, Cristina Aguilar, María José Polo Aug 2014

Evaluating Climate Change Scenarios For Regional Hydrological Management In Mountainous Semi-Arid Environments, Agustín Millares, Javier Herrero, Cristina Aguilar, María José Polo

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Snow processes play a relevant role in semi-arid mountainous basins where snowmelt dynamics conditions the availability of water resources. In such environments, many rivers flow during the dry season due to the water storage in the snow cover while heavy rainfall events sporadically trigger severe flood events. These particularities confer to these areas special interest due to their high sensitivity in the hydrological response against changes in the meteorological conditions. This issue could be critical in many regions of the world linked to semi-arid mountain areas (e.g., the Atlas Mountains, Andean Cordillera,…) and presents a real challenge for future modifications …

Levels Of Data Interoperability In The Emerging North American Groundwater Data Network, Boyan Brodaric, Nate Booth, Eric Boisvert, Jessica Lucido

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

The Canadian Groundwater Information Network (GIN) and the US National Ground-Water Monitoring Network (NGWMN) connect data from a variety of sources including states, provinces and federal agencies. Data heterogeneity is a major challenge faced by these networks, one that must be overcome at five distinct levels: systems, syntax, structure, semantics, and pragmatics. This paper discusses approaches taken at each of the five levels to ensure interoperability between the Canadian and American networks. The result is an emerging North American Groundwater Data Network, which enables users to access data transparently and uniformly on either side of the shared border.
